This was a great video that I watched last night about the Anthropology of YouTube. 

There are some interesting ideas and statistics in here for you as well as some interesting things to meditate on.

It was can only be described as the best thing EVAR, the Michigan State marching band had a guest conductor. That man? The Numa Numa guy from one of the most notorious viral videos of all time.

The hand gestures, the dancing reminiscent of the incredible viral video are spot on and it’s only made better by the student section where it seems everyone knew who this guy was.

Bravo to the band director for bringing in Numa Numa guy as the drum major and making me smile on this miserable day in Missouri.

“In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.”  I don’t know about EVERYONE, but for sure a lot of people.  For sure a lot of people are famous for doing what?  Like Jordan or Katie Price, whatever her name is, the people on The Hills and its various spin offs and other reality shows or the gossip bloggers themselves like Perez Hilton.  Then there are all the one hit wonders, arists who made one good song then poof they’re gone.  There are also people like Susan Boyle and Kelly Clarkson with real talent who become famous through talent shows.

Thing about the internet is it can catapult people to fame, but it can also swallow them whole.  Who is not on the internet today? If you search your own name can’t you find yourself.  You probably have a lot of pics of yourself online too.  I know I do, but how many people know about you? 

Even if you do not gain 15 minutes and only get 15 seconds with all the technology at our desposal we can act like we’ve got fame for as long as we like.  We can be the paparazzi for ourselves and everyone else, film makers, artists, singers, actors, writers, and put it online for everyone to see.

So here’s an attempt at being Warhol.

 Yes that’s me and I look nothing like Marilyn Monroe.  Maybe next time I’ll use actual photographs like Warhol.

             Its funny to think that after 60 years of broadcasting, ABC has still only managed to program what you tube has in the last 6 months.  I never thought of YouTube as a pioneer of personal media, but I suppose I’m wrong.  It is quite impressive that You Tube could produce 385 channels of continuous television a day without reruns.  I guess this You Tube phenomenon is quite shocking to me but I have never made a video myself.

            I had no idea that You Tube was a more effective star producer then American Idol.  Who would have ever thought that the Numa Numa Guy (Gary Brolsma) would gain worldwide attention by posting onto the Internet a webcam video of himself miming to the song Numa Numa.  Not only did he become an Internet phenomenon watched by millions of people, but he became a celebrity as well.  I remember seeing Brolsma on Good Morning America a long while ago.  My sister and I immediately feel in love with him and considered him our idol. (He still is to this day)

            Furthermore, who would have ever guessed that Soulja Boy was an internet phenomenon, before being signed to interscope records.  I thought for sure that that a 50 year old woman was responsible for the phrase “supersoak that hoe” but it turns out that DeAndre Ramone Way made it up himself, which is more alarming because he is probably the illegitimate father of at least 4 children this year.  Regardless, who would have ever thought that such self-made talent would be ignored by record labels for so long!

            The Participant observation portion of this video was hilarious.  I absolutely agree with Mike Wesch when he says you have to participate in a phenomenon to understand it.  The experiment he conducted with his students and You Tube was quite similar to the experiment that we are currently doing with twitter.  It is quite ironic how we both noticed that as communication mediums change, communities change.  This movie and this module have really opened up my eyes to technology’s impact on education.

            After watching this video, my views about You Tube have definitely changed.  Not only is it a great communication medium, but it a great source of academic knowledge as well.  If everyone can look past user fraud, I think we can all come to the consensus that You Tube is quite useful academically and therapeutically. p.s.-free hugs to anyone who comments on this.

So to start things off, I decided to premiere one of my own videos… K-ON Numa Numa.

Unlike some of my other works, this one is almost completely lip-synced. The idea is from the original Numa Numa video where Gary does a humorous lip sync to the song. As for the lyrical part, I chose scenes that I thought would match the video. I had to rely on a stray translation I found online to get it to match.

As you know, the Numa Numa meme did NOT start on YouTube. It was created on December 6th, 2004 by Gary Brolsma or by Gman250. After that, it was featured on CNN, VH1, and others. Today, the original Numa Numa video on Newgrounds has amassed over 15 million views with an additional 4 million on the YouTube version. There are more views from other YouTube videos and other sources.

The song is Dragostea din Tei which translates to “Love of the Linden Tree.” The band is O Zone. The song top the charts in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Romania, Swisserland, and others. Before anyone asks what language this song is, it is in Romanian. There is also an English version of the song as well but it did not pick up in popuarlity. The meme is still kinda strong and different language versions of the song have been produced.

A lot of the popular Viral Videos out there contain people singing. Both kinds. Great, and well, not so great.

But they are all funny.

..fine, I didn’t do anything today, except go to Jap tutoring.

On that note – what textbook would you guys recommend? My Jap tutor said to find a new textbook I liked, and I’m really quite lost. Since I know a fair number of you guys have done/are doing Jap, any recommendations?

I’ve finished Kimono 1 and Kimono 2, but I don’t really like them enough to go on with Kimono 3. They feel quite unstructured.. good for the Year 7/8 level they’re targeting, but I’d prefer something with more focus on grammar. Something like the equivalent of Tapis Volant for French. In hindsight, that was a pretty awesome textbook – nice and structured, with tables and everything. With Kimono, I feel like I’m sort of.. disorganised, I guess. We learn negative and imperative forms before learning the actual verb, which drives me crazy x)

I was thinking of maybe going straight to Wakatta!, but I don’t know if I’m ready for it. That’s what Jap Continuers use, right? I don’t think I’m anywhere near that level. My Jap feels like it’s full of gaping holes.

I was also thinking of Hai or Mirai 3/4.. maybe Isshoni? What did Ruse use for Year 9/10 Jap, out of curiosity? Which textbook would you pick?

Does anyone have an old copy of Ohayoo lying around that they wouldn’t mind donating btw? I don’t mind if it’s been written in or anything. Yep, after looking at prices in Kinokuniya, I don’t think I’m rich enough to go on a shopping spree for textbooks just for revision purposes =(

I wish I did Japanese in Year 9/10. But then I’d regret not doing French or Commerce. I’m a conspiracy theorist when it comes to Commerce. Useless subject – it exists just so that parents can prove that kids still believe the ‘it’s good for you’ line. Well, I guess it’s good if you’re considering Eco or something in Year 11/12. And maybe I did learn a bit more about taxation and investment… but I wish I did Japanese instead. I really would regret not doing French in the end – I’m glad I still remember a bit. I know enough so that I understood a fair bit of the text in the opening of Saikano.

Anyway. I threatened to publish JE themed blogs, so that’s what this actually is. Sorry x). I found this video a while ago, and it’s a very good explanation of why I’m probably a little obsessed with Johnny’s Entertainment. It’s not because of their looks, choreography or their costumes which look like they came out of the Mardi Gras.. but because they make me smile. I find them entertaining, at least, and that’s a good enough reason for me to follow their stuff.

As the title says, it’s a random Arashi fanvid to Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone, AKA the Numa numa song or whatever it’s called.
(Surprisingly, not everyone seems to know what it is. I thought it was universal.)
Reaction #1: That was a weird video.
Reaction #2: After watching it again.. it’s quite well made. Timing was handled well – I’d probably still appreciate the video without being a fangirl.
Reaction #3: This is addictive.. and it’s the fifth time I’ve seen it. Something about the dance moves; the bit just before the 1 minute mark makes me crack up^^

Arashi still isn’t really cemented as a favourite band for me. They’ve grown on me a lot, I’d love to go to their concerts, I like a fair few of their singles, and they’ve been climbing up my Last.fm chart.. but I’d still prefer NEWS or KAT-TUN. But I do find them entertaining =) (and I loved MatsuJun in HYD and Gokusen 1)

Today I finally listened to’ 明日の記憶’, the single Arashi released a bit more than a month ago. Kind of late, considering they’ve just released their single ‘Everything’ a few days ago, but I haven’t been downloading getting much new music recently. The clip’s quite nice – wait until about the chorus, where they start taking photos. I love the photos – I wish I took spectacular photos. And I want a wall like the one at the end of the clip *sigh*

The song’s been growing on me. It feels like everyone gets more equal turns at singing compared to other songs – even though Ohno Satoshi’s voice is easily the strongest, I prefer it when the others get more than the occasional line. It’s a reason why I don’t like the huge JE groups such as Hey! Say! JUMP as much… but that’s also because I find it hard to identify ten individual voices x)

The clip probably has a link to the ‘Crazy Moon’ PV, but I didn’t like that half of the single much – it sounds a bit too generic for me.

I really don’t feel like studying. I actually want to go watch the next Harry Potter movie – I don’t know why though, I didn’t like the 6th or 7th book. I also kind of want to watch Ice Age 3 and Bruno. Heh.

I haven’t done any work in the last week. I swear our entire school has swine flu xD Thankfully I’m getting better (or so I think) – after sleeping for more than 12 hours for a few days straight, I feel almost normal. Amoxil’s clearing up my cough; not the nice syrup stuff, the boring capsules =(

I should be frantically making notes right now, right?

Hmm. I’ll go stare at my computer screen for a while and wait for notes to magically appear in front of me, then.

The Numa Numa phenomenon began when internet celebrity, Gary Brolsma, a.k.a. The Numa Numa Guy, decided to make a YouTube video of himself lip syncing and contorting his face to the lyrics of “Ma-ia hii! Ma-ia huu!  Ma-ia hoo!  Ma-ia haha!”  Since then, this catchy chorus has come back to haunt us in remakes by popular artists like Rihanna in the song “Live Your Life.” I came across a cute school girl Chinese version, as well as a schoolgirl-turned-seductress Korean version.

Then, to my dismay, I came across the Vietnamese version:

Now let’s get this straight, I am Vietnamese and I am proud to be Vietnamese.  We have delicious food, beautiful people and renowned poker champions.  However, when it comes to Vietnamese attempts to recreate Western songs, I have to admit, it is definitely not our forte.  I am a huge fan of Vietnamese music and artists but every time I see a Vietnamese music video of an artist singing a “hip” song, I usually come across artists who look like they hired Derek Zoolander’s stylist and decided to use Adobe flash to create the so-called stunning visual effects.  Let’s not forget the choreography, which is probably inspired by the original Numa Numa Guy himself.

While I will never understand the original appeal of the Numa Numa song, I will never quite make out whether this video scares me (see minute 3:17) or mildly entertains me.

This first video was the first “Misheard Lyric” vid I saw on YouTube. Unless you’ve looked up the lyrics to this song, you probably wouldn’t know what the real words are anyway, but you sing along because it’s got a great beat and an infectuous melody… it sounds like a magic spell for fun.

When rapper Flo Rida originally burst on the scene (his song Low was featured in the award-winning-worthy Step Up 2 The Streets), I wasn’t a fan.  I thought the song was essentially shilling a catalog of products: Apple Bottoms jeans, Uggs (boots with fur), Reeboks (with straps), and um, baggy sweatpants…

But somewhere along the line, I got hooked.  The same happened with his follow up (In the Ayer) and Right Round, which borrows quite liberally from the classic 80’s tune, You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive.

Now know this – I usually can’t stand it when most songs lift old songs for new ones.  (Rihanna’s borrowing of Soft Cell’s Tainted Love back-beat to create the entirely different SOS was a major exception.  And I don’t count the Numa Numa song lifted for TI and Rihanna’s Live Your Life.)  And Right Round barely passed that opinion, but imagine my surprise when I heard Eiffel 65’s Blue in a new song:

Initially, I thought, “Oh geez, not this now!”  But when I figured out it out was Flo Rida, all was forgiven.  Why is that?
