Okay, X-Factor was knocked to the number 2 UK chart position for the Christmas number 1 single… beaten by a social networking pushed project – Rage Against The Machine took the number 1 spot as people stood up to the Cowell lead X-Factor machine.

The thing is it needed to be done – but no-one will argue that RATM’s song isn’t exactly “Christmassy”….

As such, just before Christmas I decided to push for a Christmas number 1 that is Christmassy…. and what could be better than “Fairytale of New York”….

Fairytale of New York has never been number 1 in the UK, yet is often voted as the best Christmas song out – so I figured it was about time we got it to number 1…

Added to this, it is the 10th anniversary of the sad and tragic death of Kirtsy MacColl, when she was hit by a speed boat in dive restricted waters whilst on holiday. This tragedy has never been properly resolved – and after 9 years of fighting for justice the case has finally run out of anywhere to go as the authorities have closed the door on it.

The day people will need to buy Fairytale of New York to make it count for a Christmas chart release is the day after the 10th anniversary of this untimely passing of Kirsty – so getting Fairytale of New York to number 1 will be a tribute, a return to a Christmassy song for Christmas, and another kick in the teeth to those that set up TV shows to force a manufactured number one.

Fairytale of New York is not a manufactured number one – Sure we will be pushing to get it there, but for over a decade it has been in the Christmas charts and it is a well loved song. It hasn’t just been made up to grab money for Simon Cowell…

This project is still in the initial stages, but much like RATM, we will be making sure Fairytale of New York does good. As such there will be a charity donation system set up. This will all be sorted as the project progresses.

I have contacted various people within The Pogues camp, and also to Kirsty MacColl’s mother. I would like them to be involved as this would be very important to the project.

SUSAN Boyle is still living off a £200 per-week allowance and “hasn’t seen a penny of her fortune” according to her brother.

The singing sensation is thought to be worth millions after her debut album shifted four million copies world-wide in just a month.

But her brother Gerry is urging her to leave her humble council house, fearing thieves are planning a raid when in fact she has “nothing worth stealing.”

His comments came as weekend reports claimed SuBo, 48, had a panic alarm fitted in her home after she found intruders lurking in her garden in the middle of the night.

The humble spinster was curled up in front of the television in her Blackburn, West Lothian, house when she spotted two strangers peering through a back window at 11pm.

They fled into the dark when Susan pulled back the curtains to confront them.

But shy Susan didn’t report the invaders to police, and relatives are worried her global stardom is becoming too big for her to remain in the semi-detached £80,000 home.

Sibling Gerry, 55, who Susan regularly visits by public bus, insisted that robbers will find nothing if they do manage to break in.

“The only thing she would be heartbroken to lose is her cat”

He said: “At present she has not seen a penny of her fortune but knows it will soon be coming her way.

“She is still living off a £200 a week allowance which she uses for food and bills.

“But as for luxuries such as jewellery and flat-screen TVs, there are none.

“The problem is she can’t get her head round the extreme wealth that is coming and the implications for her future.

“People will think because she is about to become very rich she’ll have all kinds of valuables scattered around the house.

“But the truth is there is nothing in there worth stealing. Not a jot.

“The only thing she would be heartbroken to lose is her cat.”

“This can’t go on any longer”

Gerry, an entrepreneur who runs a consultancy business, said his sister casually dropped into conversation that she stopped two raiders getting into the home, which belonged to their late parents.

He said: “I hate to think what might have happened if they had broken into the house when she was on her own.

“They could have had knives on them or anything.

“Susan rang me to tell me she’d had intruders like it was an everyday occurrence.

“She hadn’t mentioned the incident to anyone or even reported it to the police.

“When she casually dropped it into the conversation I was really shocked.

“This can’t go on any longer.

“She now has to realise that living in this small house is no longer suitable and more importantly not safe for her.”

Despite stepped-up security at Susan’s house, worried Gerry says she must move “whether she likes it or not”.

Budget

He added: “She is slowly coming around to the fact that her future is elsewhere, whether she likes it or not.

“I think the latest incident may have helped make her mind up.

“She’s told me she will have a budget between £750,000 and £1million but still wants to stay in the area to be near her family.

“I think she has a couple of places in mind but I can’t reveal them.

“She wants a lot of bedrooms so she can invite all her relatives and her new famous friends like Simon Cowell to stay.”

Meanwhile Susan took time out of her hectic schedule to spend Christmas with her other brothers John, 60, James, 58, and their sister Bridie, 67, in her Motherwell home.

James told weekend reports that the Britain’s Got Talent runner-up received slippers and a dressing gown for Christmas.

And after a traditional festival meal, the family sat down and listened to her hit CD, I Dreamed A Dream.

James said: “Listening to it with Susan was just magical.

“We are all so proud of what she has achieved this year.

“But she is very modest and was too embarrassed to sing along with it.

“Susan might be an international superstar but she will always be my little sister.”

Next on SuBo’s whirlwind schedule is a Hogmanay trip to Japan where she will perform on Kohaku Uta Gassen, said to be one of the country’s biggest New Year’s Eve television shows.

So an Internet campaign has successfully galvanised the UK against the machine that is X-Factor (see the pun!). This is a triumph over crass commercialism in a world of commercialism. In other words, not that much of a victory… but at least we will not suffer another X-Factor song on the top 50 Christmas No.1s show next year.

However, Rage Against The Machine? To someones’ taste… not mine.

Sunday 20th December, 2009 will go down in history as the day that the British public toppled the X Factor empire. Yes guys and girls, Rage Against the Machine ‘Killing in the Name of’ is Christmas number 1. A huge amount of the profit from single sales is being donated to Shelter, over 60K so far. Love it or hate it, this is truly a demonstration of the power of the British public (and facebook!), and we say power to the people! To those who raged, merry Christmas, you did it.

not so much a rant today but a little giggle. say what you will but this xmas uk’s #1 single is just wonderful. it kinda revives my faith in humanity. i’d go as far as to say it gives me a warm feeling way deep down in the cockles, maybe even in the sub-cockle area, maybe even in the colon (to paraphrase denis leary). regardless of all that it was a very rare moment where i was glued to the radio – and scott mills milked it for all it was worth (good on yah mate). rage against the machine “killing in the name of”  - rock on; i feel a little head bang coming on! excuse me. 

ahhh that’s better. although i am a bit stiff now. damn, i am getting old. best 70p i spent this year though!

Sunday, 20th December 2009. The past thirteen days have been packed with news story’s, FaceBook groups, YouTube videos, interviews about the phenomenal chart battle between the classic ‘Rage Against the Machine’ track ‘Killing In The Name Of’ and ‘Climb’ the latest single from ‘Joe McElderry’ this years Xfactor Winner.

This all came about by two members of the public creating an online campaign on FaceBook aiming to pull the RATM classic to number one beating the xfactor single that dominates our Christmas charts since 2005.

This Sunday (20th December) brought the UK top 40 Christmas chart, RATM were crowned Christmas Number 1 2009. This proves that when people want to prove a point or achieve something on a huge scale it can be done. There is still a community and it is still strong, so when we think of our soldiers fighting (for unjustified reasons) in Afghanistan this Christmas and all the killings in Gaza, Afghanistan, Iraq and many other places across the globe. Why cant the public unite just like they have on this occasion and do something about it.

If we can do it for the charts to knock xfactor off the top spot at christmas, why cant it be done for more pressing matters?

Think about it.

To think this all started when Facebook members Jon and Tracey Morter campaigned online to push Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 single Killing In The Name to number 1, which was designed to prevent another X-Factor number 1 (Joe McElderry – The Climb).

Rock band Rage Against The Machine has won the most competitive battle in years for the Christmas number one.

The band’s single, Killing In The Name, sold 500,000 downloads beating X Factor winner Joe McElderry’s The Climb by 50,000 copies to clinch the top spot.

Their success followed a Facebook campaign designed to prevent another X Factor number one.

One retailer said it was a “truly remarkable outcome – possibly the greatest chart upset ever”.

Speaking on the Radio 1 chart show, Zack de la Rocha from Rage said: “We are very, very ecstatic about being number one.”

There is little more excurciatingly dull than the Uk’s Christmas No 1. I refererence this to the ‘battle’ for the much coveted no1 position, as well as the mediocre warblings of reality stars. But like an awkward teenage sychophantic confession I must say I’m gleefully excited by the fact this year things are a little bit different. It’s Joe McElderry, this years X-Factor Winner vs Rage against the Machine. It’s a heavily orchestrated, calculated business decision vs a grassroots movement.

Joe McElderry is the well-presented, nice, puppet of a business that relies on the wonderful virtues inherent in capitalism while Rage are the foul mouthed, dirty rockers who stand in the forefront for a nation who are tired of a system that has been monopolised for far too many years (And yes, I do know they are on Sony but feel that’s another argument for another day.). The public have become disillusioned with the pre-packaged, glossy songs that through heavy, heavy media are assimilated into their psyche. This campaign has given people the opportunity to say ‘No, thanks. We want something else’, or more accurately ‘Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me’.

And that is the glorious beauty of it. This lovely little act of rebellion that has turned everyone into Punks for the day. It has made people consider they don’t have to simply accept what it is given to them, that they can cause a stir, and succeed in upsetting the status quo. It is hopefully an example of the strength of a united nation.

Some people have, however, entirely missed the point. The most common argument is that Rage are ‘just noise’. This is a narrow minded argument but the most valid, as musical taste is subjective. But, on this issue, it has to be argued that if people think this is noise then they obviously have become too complacent in their ’safe’ radio station that only play ’safe’ songs about love and, erm, more love. What comparison is original writing with a highly charged political message to the re-hashed, over produced, cover of a borrowed song? As much as I have no problem with Joe, how can he really connect with a song that wasn’t even written for him?

Other’s have argued about Rage Against the Machine’s credibility. Suggestions over the intersphere have challenged that the band and their management synthesized the whole campaign. To which it must be interjected, what would be the point? Although there is no denial that pretty much every band would enjoy the No1 spot, the band would no doubt consider it a fairly minor thing in comparison to their beliefs. Protesting naked with gaffa tape about the lack of freedom of speech in front of thousands, speaking in support of prisoners on the floor of the UN, protesting about human rights, supporting the Zapatistas…getting a No 1? Doesn’t really seem so significant anymore. The point is while Rage do gain from the situation, it is extremely doubtful they sat around and thought to themselves ‘ We need to conquer the UK, you know, get a No 1…maybe round Christmas?’

As the heat has increased in the ‘race’, comments have flooded in that have bordered on absurd. Rage, dumb? If we must go there, read ‘Ivy League Educated’. Like Hitler? Seriously? Referred to as ‘Sulking’ for having their music used as torture in Guantanamo Bay? Simply an insult. An embarrassment to the left wing, anti-capitalists? Make your own minds up about that one.

A more defensive stance has been taken by a few who suggest this is victimisation of ‘poor Joe’ McElderry. They believe ‘he deserves a No 1′ and this is sheer ‘bullying’. As far as I am aware he is 18 and this is the beginning of his career. His talent will assist him to endure the obstacles of the music business, and to receive that No 1 when and if it is due onto him. In truth, it could have been anyone. Any artist who won the X-Factor, or anyone who had released their little musical gems the week before Christmas. In simpler terms he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The campaign was also not a direct attack at Simon Cowell, but as the mastermind behind the monopolisation of the British Chart, it inevitably affects him. And as for someone who has been paramount in the four year consecutive occupation of Christmas Chart land, not to mention instrumental in almost every single no 1 of the past few months, I really don’t see the basis of complaint. He has sold just as many, if not more records as a result of the campaign. If anything he should be delighted by the increased media coverage, not that he needed any more.

The symbolism of this gesture really has little to do with who is or isn’t Christmas No 1, it is more evident that the ability to unite a nation still exists, and that people are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Over 1 million people have joined the Facebook Page that started this act of anti-consumerism. It’s inspiring to hear the people as a collective voice, to know that we can’t be ignored forever. It is with overwhelming (desperate and naive) hope that such organic movements could happen on a bigger, more politicised level. That maybe one day when a million people march against a war, they may be heard. That when we say ‘No Trident Replacement’ we mean it. That when we protest against the G20, someone doesn’t have to die before the Government and media finally accept that police brutality exists. While that is an ideal, and far off, Rage’s message about corruption in society, resonates in our minds and for the meantime, is Britain’s coolest bit of anarchy for a fucking long time. I, along with many others are very pleased that they are this years Christmas no1.

Dear reader, something terrible has happened and there is only one way to tell you and that is just to come out with it and tell you straight: Iran just got Nuclear weapons and it is all our fault.

This is going to sound a little strange and far-fetched, but while the war between Rage Against The Machine and Simon Cowell’s X Factor was in full swing, little did some of you realise that what was happening behind the scenes was much more sinister.

I swear that everything I am about to tell you is true and I have documentary evidence to back up all my claims. I work for the UK Government and I am writing this anonymously so as to not get in trouble. And I don’t mean losing my job; I mean my life could be at stake. This is big: it goes right to the top.

In a nutshell, the Government and an Iranian spy ring have been using the downloads of those two songs to disseminate encryption keys with secret information that the Iranian Government desperately needed to finally get their Nuclear capabilities off the ground.

I know it sounds amazing and completely unbelievable. But I promise it is true.

It’s long been known now that digital secrets can be encrypted and sent undetected in image files and music files and this has been exploited to great effect this Christmas. A secret Iranian spy ring decided to share their new and potentially final calculations that would lead to them finally forging ahead with their Nuclear strategy using the Christmas number one singles battle.

I cannot go into the details here, but these secrets were digitally encoded and attached to downloads and CD singles that people bought, unwittingly playing them on computers attached to the Internet and allowing the information to flow undetected and freely to the spies in Tehran.

But the British Government got wise to this, thanks in part to counter-espionage, and it was decided that there had to be a way that we could get them back at their own game somehow, using the very technique that they had developed.

Basically, Simon Cowell’s X Factor song was chosen by the British Government as the way to stop this. They reasoned that as the song would sell more than any other song in the charts, they could transmit ‘blocking’ codes or ciphers that would cancel out the Iranian spy codes and attach these to the X Factor song.

How wrong they were. An Internet campaign on Facebook overturned events. Some people decided that they were fed up with Simon Cowell’s X Factor getting the Christmas number one spot and they decided that the wanted Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 song ‘Killing In The Name’ instead.

While it may have been a well-meaning campaign and I bear the organisers no ill-will whatsoever, it is simply all their fault that Iran now has the Nuclear codes, because not enough of these blocking codes were able to be transmitted and the Iranian spies finally got all the information they needed.

But it wasn’t the fault of the Internet campaigners. They didn’t know that behind the scenes all our futures were hanging in the balance and that Simon Cowell was going to be our saviour.

Simon Cowell of course knew all about the secret battle and tried his best to deter people from joining the Rage Against The Machine campaign, but it seemed the more he talked about it, the more people wanted Rage Against The Machine to be the Christmas number one.

And the rest is history. As 5 million people tuned in to Radio 1 (some for the first time in years) to hear the official singles chart, a few people, myself and Simon Cowell included were sat in a bunker deep under Central London, hoping, praying that we would have prevailed.

But it was to no avail. How ironic that while people were celebrating what they saw as the victory of David over Goliath, or of Frodo over Sauron, what had really happened was so much worse.

What will happen now is anyone’s guess. But it is too late. We will all die very soon as Iran finally arm themselves and it will be the fault of Rage Against The Machine, their campaign organisers and the 502,000 people who downloaded their song.

And Simon Cowell, peace be upon him, will be immortalised in history as the man who tried to save us. He tried valiantly, but sadly, he failed. God help us all. He is under strict orders to remain silent on this matter and he has been well-trained, so even if you ask him directly he will definitely deny it.

I posted this here today not to publicise this for the wrong reasons: I want the world to know how valiantly he tried to help us.

I know I could get into trouble for this, but I have to think about the greater good. Also, very soon, none of this will matter. We will all be dead.
