We are not using the crib yet and are first time parents, but we were impressed by the quality and sturdiness of the wood. The crib came within a week of ordering and all of the components were in great shape. The only issue that my husband found was trying to put it together. The company sent us the wrong directions for a similar crib that they sell. It made it a little bit harder to figure out! All in all- it was still put together in under 2 hours. And the mocha looks beautiful and modern in the nursery.

Winter is here!  While cold, damp weather is perfect for staying home and sitting by the fire, rains and low temperatures are also just right for tree planting.  Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) has tree seedlings for sale at great prices that may be perfect for your back yard.   

Whether you need hardwood or pine, GFC’s seedlings are in just the right condition for planting.  When the winter chill sets in, trees become dormant, or nearly so.   Their need for sunlight, water, and nutrients is very much diminished, which makes December through March the best time of year to plant trees in Georgia.  Planting in the dead of winter gives young trees plenty of time to re-establish root contact with the soil.  In addition, grey, overcast skies reduces their need for water uptake.  All in all, this is the perfect time for planting.

Though some species are sold out, the Georgia Forestry Commission still has plenty of trees remaining.  Contact the nursery directly at 229-268-7308, or visit  GaTrees.org to get an order form and price list (PDF).  We deliver weekly to GFC County Offices.   Or, you can pick up your trees at the GFC’s Flint River Nursery near Montezuma, GA.

I have been so thankful recently for all the pressure and stress that we are avoiding by not sending Mr Fierce to nursery. It has actually turned into a bit of a list. 

1. I don’t have to get everyone out of the house in the mornings by a certain time. I’m not a morning person anyway, and that would be a huge struggle for me.

2. I don’t have to worry if I don’t get much sleep (Little Miss Smile is a bit of a night owl and likes to drop off between 12-1am).

3. The children can stay up to see Daddy (who gets home around 7pm) and stay up a bit if we have friends over as well. At the moment the children surface around 8am, and we all stay in our Super King Size bed for a bit reading stories until our tummies start rumbling for breakfast.

4. Friends with children at nursery tell me that the “time off” feels like a bit of a myth: a) I would still have the other two, and b) by the time you’ve dropped them off and got home, it’s nearly time to go out and collect them again.

5. All that travelling in the car / buggy wouldn’t be too much fun for the younger ones either. Plus we save money on petrol etc.

6. Occasionally I think that Mr Fierce is missing out on lots of fun craft activities by staying at home, but I know we’ll be doing more and more as the house gets sorted and Little Miss Smile becomes a bit more predictable. It does mean that we can spend lots of time on other things that I know are important – learning from the Bible, and reading reading reading (we’re working our way through The Chronicles of Narnia at the moment).

7. I don’t have to worry about getting the children into a “good” nursery, or what’s going on when they are there. I know only a tiny minority of children will have bad experiences, but it does happen, and not sending mine means it doesn’t have to be on my radar at all.

8. I don’t have to “compete” at the school gate – I wouldn’t anyway, but I don’t like everyone seeing me in rubbish clothes with greasy hair!

9. I find the more time I spend with my children, the easier our relationships are, and the more I want to spend time with them. The other day Mr Fierce had hurt his finger just before he was due to go to Grandma’s house, so he wanted to stay with “Mummy” and didn’t go. A little while ago this would have been a disaster (from my pov), but we had a lovely afternoon and evening together, while Little Miss Sunshine had some quality time with Grandma.

10. It just feels like we’re free. To do anything we want with our time, to spend it all outside in the snow or cuddled up indoors under a blanket. To go out for the day if somewhere takes our fancy, to make the most of places when it’s quiet or cheaper, to cultivate close relationships with our families, rather than 30-odd other children in a classroom.

I feel so thankful to have discovered all this. I wish that going to nursery wasn’t just the automatic choice for most of the population – there is another way!

"Nest"

In the beginning of our pregnancy, I received a beautiful gift in the mail from a friend on the East Coast.  It was a copy of the book “Birthing from Within”.    Helping women to “tap their resources so that their birthing will be life-enhancing and empowering”.  One of the first suggestions was to create a pregnancy journal.  And I did!

I made my own journal, and in doing so felt my creative spirit re-awaken!  I’ve always been surrounded by creative people, starting with my Great Aunt Rose and my Mom when I was little.  Lately, I’ve been so busy, I’ve forgotten how much I enjoy letting my imagination run free!

"Wisdom"

First came the journal, then came a mobile for above the crib, and most recently I have created two pieces of wall art from scrap papers {pictured in this blog}.  The first is called “Nest”, which the nursery will be.  The second is called “Wisdom”, inspired by the owls I met in Spain this summer while exploring an abandoned church.  Each piece has inspired me to venture further into my creative side…I’m excited!

where, oh where has the customer service gone? – Stacey E. Michael – Athens, GA USA
I ordered this product and it DID arrive promptly, but that’s where the success of this product ends! As everyone knows, you have to wash any clothing or fabric a baby is going to come in contact with in baby-safe detergent. I washed this baby bedding PER THE MANUFACTURERS INSTRUCTIONS and it basically exploded in the wash. The seams came apart spilling stuffing all inside my washing machine. This product is POORLY manufactured! The fabric is not sewn correctly and will probably come apart and shred, as mine did, even for you! I contacted the company to return and was met with BLATANT refusal to stand behind their product and offer ANY customer support. Basically NO RETURN and I’m out over sixty bucks! Luckily I have a seamstress friend who graciously offered to repair my baby’s bedding – noting all the sewing flaws it had – at no charge. I’m filing an injunction with the Better Business Bureau about SOHO Designs and Baby Depot! Awful! Awful! Awful!

So… the roofers are coming some time next week – YAY!!! If you missed that part of our lives, you can catch up by clicking here. Once they come and fix the roof, then we can fix the ceiling in the nursery & be done with it!

Other than the roof/ceiling issue, and needing to paint the bathroom up there – the nursery is finished!!! Whoohoo!!!! We hung up the alphabet wall cards I bought off of Ebay – they look like this but because I got them on Ebay -> it cost me WAY LESS than what other websites were selling them for. Go me! Juniper & Magnolia have the same alphabet cards in their room… I hesitated for a while about buying the same thing for Snowdrop’s nursery – but I looked and looked and couldn’t find alphabet cards that fit the room, or that I loved so much. So…. they all have the same alphabet in their rooms. Which, I guess is kind of nice in a way. It ties them all together? Anyways…

SO we hung up the alphabet cards, I’ve washed all the blankets, all the newborn to 3 month clothes, put all the clothes away in the dresser… what else… I’ve pretty much done everything I need to do before she arrives. She’s not coming any time soon is what I’m thinking. Now, if I hadn’t done any of these things yet – I’m pretty sure she would have been here weeks ago. Isn’t that how it works?

I kept going back and forth about her “take-home” outfit – it’s important to me to have this ready this time because last time we had to take the girls home in their hospital commissioned undershirts. We had forgotten to bring their take-home outfits when we came back to pick them up – so I don’t want to screw that up this time! So I had gone back & forth about what to put her in. It’s cold out. She needed a cozy outfit. I settled on a pair of these fleecy pink pants (that J & M had never gotten around to wearing as newborns…) and an alphabet onesie (I’m not obsessed with the alphabet, I swear). The onesie is short-sleeved, so she’d need to wear a long-sleeved white onesie underneath (how very ’skater’ of her). I wasn’t totally crazy about this but figured it would work. I went back and forth. Back and forth. I put a sleeper with footies in the bag just in case I changed my mind at the hospital about the take-home outfit. It’s cute. One of my favorites from when the girls were born… neutral yellows and greens with stars and a giraffe on it. Cute. Not… the greatest for bringing home my third little girl. I’m really NOT a pink kind of girl. I prefer greens and purples on my daughters… but something was just not girly enough for me in these other outfits I picked. SO. I was at Target last night and they had a three pack of long-sleeved onesies. Two of the three were pink (one hot, one soft) but the third was a perfect green with little flowers on it – not super girly, but girly enough to not make me gag. So I bought them. I figure I can use the other two long-sleeved onesies for a month or so, and it being Winter, it’ll be nice to have some long-sleeves that aren’t just plain undershirt white. SO, she’ll wear the green long-sleeved onesie with the pink pants and probably fuzzy white socks. (I packed three pairs of socks in the bag… I’m terrible at packing light.)

I’m so boring. Sorry if the above bored you. *sigh*… The ramblings of this pregnancy are beginning to drive me nuts.

Moving on… Christmas is coming!

I’ve never been a huge fan of “opening presents’ so Christmas has never been SUPER delightful for me. I want to be a movie star (yes, still haven’t given up that dream yet!) but I can’t open presents in front of people without feeling strange? Call me weird. I do!

So Christmas Eve we’ll be heading to Hubby’s parents’ house for dinner and festivities. There will be lots of family there. Some are flying in… on planes… with germy people. Some work in hospitals… with germy people. Some are just plain weird and don’t practice good hygeine… and others, well. Others have really undisciplined boys.

I’m totally worried we’re going to catch a cold, the flu, etc. I KNOW I’ll walk away with a headache from the “naughty boys”. Of course, I’ll request that no one kisses myself, or the girls. I don’t want germs unncessarily spread. I know, I know – I’m a germaphobe. I’ve admitted it before. At this stage in the game, my due date is SO CLOSE, I really can’t afford to get sick – nor can I afford for my children to get sick.

I feel like a nutso having to request people not to get too close – but I’m SO WORRIED that someone is going to be sick on Christmas Eve… and still choose to attend the festivities because, well, it’s Christmas! The worst would be if we arrived and I had to tell Hubby to help me pack up the kids back into the car so we could go home. I’d hate to be a party-pooper, and I’d hate the idea that everyone would talk about us after we left, and etc etc etc.

I don’t know what else to say about this, other than I’m aprehensive about the whole thing.

*le sigh*

And our TV broke (the picture completely went out, we still have sound but no picture). This is not a huge deal. I think the most annoying thing is that the girls don’t totally understand that it’s “broken”. I don’t mind not watching TV. It’s refreshing.

And in happier news, we finally found sconces (on Ebay!) and hung them in the main room – so my early 90’s UGLY MOTHER-F*ING sconces are gone! YAY! AND AND AND we also found a mailbox (on Ebay! for 99 cents!! 15 bucks in shipping but whatever, it was still a fabulous deal) that is big and looks fantastic on the side of our house. I’m so happy.

Now if I could just have this baby tonight so we can be home by Wednesday and not have to attend Christmas Eve with the naughty boys…

If you’re a parent, you have probably at one point or another looked for just the right Bible for your child. You look high and low for something that will fit with their particular developmental stage AND hold their interest. It would be nice if it didn’t bore YOU to tears as you read it faithfully each bedtime. Most first Bibles are filled with all of the important and wonderful stories which give toddlers the ability to learn even as pre-readers.

I recently attended a children’s ministry conference for leaders of the Vineyard. We love getting together bi-annually to share resources as well as encourage each other along in our leadership of this most important generation. It was at this fall conference that I heard about this beautifully written and illustrated children’s Bible called, “The Jesus Storybook Bible – Every Story Whispers His Name.” by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago.

This book is now one of my top favorites! Instead of writing a critique of this amazing book, I thought I’d include a portion of it here. The illustrations are perfect and truly beautiful! Here is a small part of The Nativity, from Luke 1-2. This is called, “He’s Here!”

“Everything was ready. The moment God had been waiting for was here at last! God was coming to help his people, just as he promised in the beginning. But how would he come? What would he be like? What would he do? Mountains would have bowed down. Seas would have roared. Trees would have clapped their hands. But the earth held its breath. As silent as snow falling, he came in. And when no one was looking, in the darkness, he came.”

“There was a young girl who was engaged to a man named Joseph. (Joseph was the great-great-great-great-great grandson of King David.) Literally.

Peanut shares our bedroom with us and we have dubbed this corner “Baby’s corner.”  Yes, we did put baby in the corner.  I know that my friend Rachael appreciates the Dirty Dancing reference.  The crib sheet of course is ever changing – the one in the photo has cursive script that says “I love Mommy.  I love Daddy.”  The other ones we rotate through are pretty basic – a sunny yellow one and a mocha one.  The hot air balloons were purchased a cutesie shop in Ocean Grove and the crib and rug are Ikea.  The beautiful bamboo print was made by my talented sister Mikayla when she was in the 6th grade.  She gave it to hubby and me as a wedding present.

And if you step back from the crib photo this little cabinet is right next to it.  It is a part of my bedroom set that I inherited from my Great Grandmother on my Dad’s side.  It is a heywood wakefield in wheat finish.  I absolutely adore my bedroom set and can’t wait for peanut to have all three pieces in her bedroom someday.  The canvas is another Land of Nod purchase (same as her first ornament).  The frames, flowers, and vase are all ikea.  Beautiful photographs on the wall were taken by the talented Kamila Harris this summer.  The little beaded lamp was a gift from my Grandparents many years ago.  The fabric house was made by my Nana for me when I was a little girl.  Back when I took these pics I was really just testing out my camera so I didn’t think to close the “roof” of the house.  I will have to take a closer photo for a future post.  I use it to store peanut’s little toys and such.  The carving was made by my talented Uncle Tim as a gift for peanut’s baptism.

On the wall is a large framed poem that I have always loved and wanted a constant reminder of:

And a cute little sketch of a girl on the beach (yet another Ocean Grove purchase).  I will try to take some more pics of this.  The shelves were a necessity – you can see that peanut’s sleepers, blankets, and burp cloths are taking over!  The second shelf from the bottom has all of peanut’s books and my Calvin and Hobbes collection.  The very bottom shelf has 5billion binders of notes from graduate school. ick.  The top shelf is my shelf of jewelry, chapstick, and beautiful metallic massaging thing that oh-I-forgot-I-even-had-and-wow-I-could-really-use-that-now.

The top of the bookshelf has some framed photos of me & hubby and my sister.  They were there pre-peanut and haven’t budged since.  You can’t really tell in this photo but there is a basket of baby toys to the right of the cabinet.  Right now it just looks like a heap of baby crap.  Actually, I guess it kinda is.

Photos taken on December 3rd, 2009 showing leafing out on Peachleaf Willow, Salix amygdaloides and Black Cottonwood, Populus balsamifera L. ssp. trichocarp. Both species are part of our tree grow out project for the Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuge. Exciting times for the nursery as they are waking up trees in the middle of winter.
