Good Monday, bassheads.
Tonight I’m going to begin a short series of uploads, dedicated to the infamous Hospital Records KILLER compilation albums known tentatively as ‘Hospital Mixes’. These albums have always been a beacon of clarity in the ever-changing DnB world, especially for me. Regardless of how I feel, or what sort of ish may be brewing in my life, I know I can always turn to Hospital Records to provide the sickest comp albums to ever hit the streets. Despite the grime and dirt folks, you can never turn the volume down with something as massive as liquid. <3

BUT!  Who are these cats at Hospital Records you say? GLAD YOU ASKED!

” Hospital Records is a drum and bass record label based in London, England, specializing in the softer and funkier side of the music known as liquid funk. It was founded in 1996 by Tony Colman and Chris Goss and has become one of the biggest labels within the drum and bass scene.”

The current Hospital Mix count is up to 7. Each mix is compiled by a various Hospital Records dj, ranging from Danny Byrd, to Cyantific, to London Elektricity. Sick Music – This is Hospital Records’ brand new compilation of new tunes from some of their top dnb artists, including London Elektricity, Mistabishi, Nu:Tone, Cyantific, Danny Byrd and loads of others.

Downloaded it today from Amazon MP3 site, its a great listen, highly recommended. A nice mix of some old skool jungle sounds with some bang up to date sounds, a real cross-section of whats out there in the drum and bass scene.

Great opening track of an album I recently bought at “De jongens van Hemmes“, a record store in Groningen. I really like the sample with the short piano tune at the beginning, real spacy. Along with that, Hospital records is doing some fine work

Logistics of Hospital Records has been putting out some great music lately and it sounds like he’s been really stepping up his game.  I used to live in Cambridge and I’ve seen him perform live several times at the Fez club Spoonfed gig, can’t say he’s the best DJ live but he’s surely making quality music.  He usually performs with the Future Sounds of Cambride who comprise of Nu:Tone, Logistics and Commix.

Hört man den Namen Logistics denkt man wohl als erstes an ein versandunternehmen nicht aber an Drum and Bass. Matt Gresham präsentiert jedoch unter diesem Synonym bereits seit 2004 grade diese Musikrichtung. 1981 geboren in Cambridge fand er schon früh zu den treibenden Sounds. Was wohl auch die schuld seines Bruders Dan ist welcher als Nu:tone bereits seit 2001 auf Hospital Records seine Scheiben produziert. Hier fand auch Matt 3 Jahre später ein zu Hause für seine Musik – die er unteranderem mit Cubase und Reason produziert. Mit seinem Debüt Album „now more than ever“ gelang ihn bereits ein beachtliches Album, welchem er im letzten Jahr mit Reality Checkpoint nochmal eins nachlegte.

Hier drauf bleibt er seinem Stil treu welcher vor allem aus Jazzelementen und meist ruhigen bis verträumten Drum and Bass Beats besteht. Desweiteren scheut er sich aber nicht auch mal Experimente zu riskieren und so finden sich auch immer mal wieder nummern die stark an Burial erinnern auf seinen Releases zum Beispiel die Nummer „ Back Where we started” . Matt Grasshams Entscheidung sein Grafikstudium zu Gunsten Logistics abzubrechen kann durchaus gut angesehen werden. Zählt er doch zu einem der besten Produzenten Englands in seinem Genre. Mit seiner Aktuellen Scheibe ist ihn ebenfalls wieder ein Gutes werk gelungen was auf jeden Fall gehör verdient hat.

Much to my delight, I just discovered yesterday that Hospital Records are very present and active on both Twitter, Vimeo and other places! I’m now fascinated by videos I’ve never seen before, like the ‘Production Tips’ series with Nu:Tone and Danny Byrd which to me, a fan/enthusiast of the genre means a lot, especially because I know I’ll never produce any but I find interesting to watch others do it. If I could go backstage just to stare at it all night I’d be fascinated personally. 

So far I’ve only started following London Elektricity as his tracks have grown on me and have kept me company through many rainy bus and train journeys – and it’s great. It’s not the kind of Twitter stream you’d expect from a musician that says ’see me here, there, this is where I’ve released my latest album, download a free track now’. It’s human! And I like it a lot! Big up to them for bringing all this to us

Amisty, fairytale like forest is the departure point of this trip – a bit of a surprise rises from the fog to take us forth into lighter jungle and oldskool grounds. We get some ‘Soul Time’ and some trippy beats before we encounter two crazy looking fellows on bycicles. Moody darkness covers the jungle as the digtial revolution rolls over the land. ‘I am as mad as hell and I’m not goin’to take this anymore!’.

It’s my birthday in two weeks. I love this time of year. I’m an autumn baby and love this season to bits. The greyness, the leaves all over the ground. Awesome. I pretty much dream of weather where I can wear just a hoodie year round but instead will settle for the months of September and October.

My bike has a flat tire. Lame.

Future Sound of Cambridge Vol. 3 – Some nice tracks on there from the likes of Nu:Tone, Logistics and Commix. A couple of tunes that I’ve talked about before are on there. Dunno if I’ll be picking it up… Watch someone’s gonna play one of these tracks out and I’ll hear it on a loud sound system and be annoyed I didn’t buy it. Story of my life.

It’s the kind of day where you really want to just sit at home and be all cozied up on the couch. Alas I’ll be at my desk.

Today’s oldie: Jonny L – Moving Thru Air (Optical Remix) – XL Recordings 1998 I definitely was quite the Optical fan back then. I will fully admit that I had an all out dnb crush on him. I think mentally I was just on this gritty plane where I wanted my music to be raw and disgruntled yet melodic but not loud and noisy and to me Optical’s production was just that. Really great tune.

I’ve been hearing some Logistics tunes lately that have totally made me fall in love with his music again. When his album Now More Than Ever came out, I was full on obsessed. I loved every track and was so into his production. Winter Blues was my favourite. I had heard an unfinished version that Flight had played on her 1xtra show earlier in the year and totally sought it out quite regularly and it didn’t come out until way way later and I wasn’t even annoyed that it took so long, I was just happy to own it. Also his remix of The Great D&B Swindle was so awesome. Then I started to not be so into his stuff. It wasn’t that it wasn’t good, it was more that i was on a totally different page dnb wise. Now I’m all on it again. There’s something so deep about his production. I feel like I just get it. Does that make sense? I think it’s cool when you’re listening to an artist and you connect with their music cuz you can say to your self, “I know what you’re on about, I get it.”

I was listening to the latest Hospital Podcast and heard one of Logistics new tunes Intervention on there. Hot stuff. I actually enjoyed the podcast this time around. I feel like it’s very hit or miss with me. Sometimes I’m super into it and other times I can’t even get through the first couple of tracks. Blasphemy!!! I know, I know

There’s a wicked Matrix remix of that Redeyes Luv & Haight tune with Deeizm that I said I didn’t like on the podcast. I still don’t really like the vocal but the remix is awesome. Matrix!! I’ve always really liked him. My copy of his Sleepwalk LP is too through! I can only play the first half of my fave track Asylum cuz it’s just too scratched up. Dang.

Like I said though, I thought this installment of the podcast was really good. I’ll post it once I see a link but you can also just go subscribe to it on itunes.

I also am currently loving that Nu:Logic (Nu:Tone & Logistics) Trademark track. (It’s in the player.) I heard it on that awesome Marcus Intalex mix from July and it’s just a banging track.

I don’t have any mixes to rate for you right now. I’m kinda in that zone I’ve talked about before where I just seem to listen to the chunk of mixes that I have right now on repeat. I’m sure I’ll move on to a new group of mixes pretty soon.

I feel like my summer has been a bit boring. I usually am so excited about Chicago summers but I think that this time around it took so long that the enthusiasm died and now it’s almost over. Boo. I do have an exciting fall coming up though so hopefully that will make up for it. I have two weddings to go to which are actually going to be really fun cuz they are two of my really good friends.

I totally didn’t know Zero T had an album coming out. That’s definitely something to look forward to. I haven’t finished listening to that Bailey mix but I liked what I heard so far. Something I didn’t like on the mix though was that Nu:Tone “It’s Jazzy” remix. It’s the fifth track in. Eek. I like Nu:Tone but that track is very sacred to me. It was one of the first records I ever bought and one of the first ones I learned to match beats with and I just don’t think that remix does it justice. On a nicer note though I really do like Balaclava. That’s a sweet track.

I saw that Ill Logic & Raf have a new track coming on Double Zero Recordings. Be Free/Smash Daddy. I think I missed the promo round but hopefully will pick up the full release. I miss Ill Logic & Raf. I was a big fan of the Syracuse EP.  I’m glad they’ve got some new stuff coming out.

Found this Dan Marshall mix. I’m not as crazy about that “Crazy” track as everyone else is but I do like some of his other stuff.

Pretty chill day today, just working diligently and listening to music. Depressed about the weather going back to 55 degrees but I’m not gonna harp about it. Sometimes there is such thing as too much complaining.

Apropos Beatport. Eller, ikke egentlig.
Vi har snakket om Nu:Tone før. “System” gjestet av jazzpop-starlet Natalie Williams, mere spesifikt. Om du syns den var like fantastisk som det jeg syns, er det all grunn til å sjekke ut resten av greiene hans.

I begynnelsen av mars kom han med ny skive, dog kun på mp3. (Det er her Beatport kommer inn.) Medical History på Hospital Records virker som en sterk videreføring av tidligere låter fra den kanten. Den siste skiva, som nevnte “System” er fra, Back of Beyond er, ikke uventet, meget elegant.
Jeg er ingen drum’n’bass connoisseur, men jeg hva jeg liker, for å si det på den måten. Og dette er rett opp gata mi. Så jeg syns du burde like det, du også.

Det var visst et Hospital Records party i Trondheim tidligere i år, dog uten Nu:Tone. Kan vi ikke bare ønske oss et besøk snarlig, egentlig? Kan godt ta med seg Logistics også, da høres det kanskje litt mere sånn her ut:

It’s already Tuesday and I’m still reeling from the events of last weekend. On Saturday, I stopped by the Nike 706 Space in the Dashanzi Arts District for their Force of Love party, which was… I’m not sure what it was. There were DJs, breakdancing and alot of free booze and food, and also a gallery displaying works from Korea, Taiwan, NYC, Paris and Germany. On the whole, as one spectator dryly noted, “alot of fucking work for… you know, a shoe.” but still highly enjoyable no less.

I also finally got into gear and went to Yugong Yishan both Friday and Saturday night, and the new venue is definately a step up in class from the old. Thankfully, drink prices are still the same and the sound system seems much improved. A little concerning though, was the open turtle tank plus turtle currently occupying the second floor bathroom –  it doesn’t seem to me that a small turtle should have to live in a place where it’s entirely possible that he will be peed on at some point in the night.  Just saying is all.

The Friday night Busdriver show was of epic proportions, with openers The Red Hand Jazz Band and the dubiously named The Beijing Live Hip Hop Experience playing long sets before the main event, leaving the crowd fidgeting and restless. Los Angeles born Regan Farquhar, the man behind Busdriver, alongside his DJ Antimc (otherwise known as Matthew Alsberg) did surprisingly well despite flying in to the Middle Kingdom at 5am that morning and spending the day at the Forbidden City.

Saturday, the Joyside boys were wildly drunk and the crowd equally so, and I’ve never seen such a display of nihilism as I did that night. Drunk girls collapsing on the floor, a furious mosh pit (don’t get me started on the Chinese concept of “moshing”) that seemed to start and stop at random, empty glasses, beer bottles and apple cores thrown and crashing onto the stage, slippery floors, sweat and cigarettes fueled the set and after a whirlwind twenty minutes, I was ready for it all to end and to head back home for a long night’s sleep.

In other news, Micheal Pettis, Professor of Finance at the prestigious Peking University, part owner of the famed D-22 music bar in Wudaokou and general champion of Chinese rock music, alongside Yang Haisong, who most people know as the charismatic lead singer of post punk Nanijing/Beijing legends PK14, have teamed up together to form Maybe Mars Records, and you can buy their latest three releases (Carsick Cars – S/T, Joyside – Booze at Neptune’s Dawn, Snapline – Party is Over, Pornstar) at The Sugarjar, Freesound and at D22. Watch for this week’s edition of City Weekend for a review of the new Snapline album!

Hospital Records (now on release 122) continue to stand at the front of the liquid scene. Latest release is the new Nu:Tone LP, titled “Back of Beyond”. Packed with beats, soul and creativity it ensures Nu:tone continues to move upwards from his 2005 debut.

Standout track: System (Ft. Natalie Williams). Very big on the 1xtra playlist.

For any Jazz fans, or those who want to try something new.. heard this on Gilles Peterson’s Southport Weekender Set, and immediately tracked it down to jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv imprint. You’l most likely know the original “Strings of Life” by Derrick May, if not by the name then definitely by the sound. Artist name of “Christian Prommers Drum Lesson”, not quite sure what exactly that means or where it comes from.. However a great latin/jazz number which is always building and moving.

Another one from Axwell proving that he’s one of the nicest house producers around at the moment.
