Nvu is a free WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web editor. It also has the ability to be a very powerful HTML editor with its “source” view. Nvu is full of features that will let anyone, even if you don’t know what a server is, create a website. This is where things get complicated though. Nvu CREATES a free site, it does not put it on the internet. This is where you need to find a server to put your site on the web, since I am not going to pay to have a personal web site put on the internet that no one will even look at. I am currently using Nvu to create a simple webpage with a list of links and a paragraph of information and reminders. If you are going to download Nvu and actually use it to create a website on the internet then please note that Nvu is not a professional service and therefor does not have some of the better features that other programs do. The main reason I use Nvu is like I said, to make a custom homepage.

The simplicity of Nvu is completely unmatched. The WYSIWYG mode is very smart and does not add “crap tags” or tags that only slow down the loading of a page on the internet. It also has many features that keep it LEAPS above other WYSIWYG editors. It has specific menus for each element of the page. I mean this by that fact that tables have specific things that let you fully customize them along with text witch can be fully customized. You can even add CSS files to your HTML in WYSIWYG instead of having to get the same colors and things on each page.

Overall Nvu is simple to use and highly effective at making quality web sites. If you are going to get it you can download it at www.net2.com. It is a small file that installs quickly and is an extremely simple program to use. I hope you are more successful than I am with it.

This weekend, I decided to spend a little time formatting one of my books (Dragon Stones, natch) for the Amazon Kindle.  The Kindle, of course, is an e-book reader notable for its built-in “Whispernet” wireless client, which allows the user to shop and buy books and have them delivered directly to the device without ever having to connect it to a computer.  I got a Kindle 2 for my birthday this year and it quickly became my preferred way to read books.  But this isn’t a post about the Kindle, it’s a post about creating Kindle content.

If you have electronic rights to a book in Amazon’s catalog, you have the ability to start selling it in the Kindle store via a link on the book’s listing.  This link takes you to the “Digital Text Platform” section of Amazon.com, where you can enter your book’s information and then upload a file to be converted into a Kindle HTML document.  (This will all look pretty familiar to anyone who has used one of the modern online self-publishing services such as Lulu.)  Yes, HTML — the Kindle is, essentially, displaying web pages.  More on that shortly.

I uploaded the PDF version of Dragon Stones as my source file, and the Amazon.com converted did a respectable job turning it into Kindle HTML.  It stripped out the page headers and footers, including the page numbering, page numbers not really being meaningful on a device where you can grow and shrink the font size as you read.  The converted document was certainly readable in the “Kindle preview” on the DTP page.  Does this mean that you can take your book, upload it, and publish it to the Kindle without knowing any HTML?  Ummm, not so much.

The HTML conversion, while good, is not perfect, which is why Amazon recommends that you review the file and why you have the ability to download it and edit the HTML, then upload it again.  In particular, I noticed and fixed a couple of irregularities introduced by the conversion:

• Some font sizes were rendered either too small or too large
• Some text alignments were not respected; in particular, a section at the beginning that contained centered text was rendered left-justified instead.  This appears to be due to (alert:  impending geeky digression ensues) how the Amazon converter applies CSS classes to paragraphs; it created a large number of CSS paragraph tags (“<p>”) that included text alignment instructions with the “!important” modifier, causing it to override the “center” instruction on the block of text in question.  The solution I went with was to remove the class declaration from the “<p>” tags in question.
• Page breaks were removed.  This is a big one.  HTML doesn’t natively support page breaks (after all, a continuously scrolling document, which is what a web page is, doesn’t have “page breaks” per se), so it might seem to make sense that the converter ignores them.  Fortunately, the Kindle supports a nonstandard page break instruction tag (“<mbp:pagebreak />”). This tag is your friend; use it.  Otherwise your reader is going to find that “CHAPTER TWO” starts a few lines underneath the last paragraph of “CHAPTER ONE”, which, while it will not make your book unreadable, does make it look a little sloppy, not to mention confusing.  (Side note:  This is a Mobipocket tag.  It doesn’t appear that the Kindle officially supports all Mobipocket tags, but it supports some of them, at least.)
• It treated “<br>” tags as open-ended.  Technically they are, because to close a tag, you need the slash before the greater than sign (“<br />”).  However, some HTML editors don’t add this slash.  I’ve never seen a browser treat “<br>” as open-ended, but the Kindle evidently does.  I discovered this because my own HTML editor is one that doesn’t put the slash in, and for some reason a “<br>” tag in my document had gotten a style associated with it, like so:  ”<br style=’text-style:italic;’>”.  This was causing the entire page after the “<br>” to be rendered italicized.  It took me a little while to track down the source of this formatting issue, simply because I wasn’t looking for “<br>” tags with style declarations in them.  As soon as I spotted one, though, I knew I had found the culprit.  Removing the style declaration fixed the unwanted italicizing.

In addition to these changes, I did some additional minor cleanup in a few spots where I didn’t like how the text had rendered, and changed the title in the HTML header which, interestingly, was “Long Before Dawn“.  I’m pretty sure it was getting this from the OpenOffice.org document style, which I must have created while working on Long Before Dawn.

Once I was finished, I uploaded the HTML file to replace the one that Amazon.com had created out of the PDF.  Already being in the required format, it was passed through apparently unmodified, and I was completely happy with how it rendered in the Kindle preview; so I clicked “publish”.  Does that mean that you can now buy Dragon Stones for your Kindle for the low, low price of $4.99?  Nope:

I doubt Amazon is conducting an editorial review of the content; most likely they are reviewing the format to make sure the presentation is satisfactory.  If I’m correct, this is another reason to download your file, review it, and make whatever changes are necessary to fix page breaks, fonts, etc.  Although HTML can be edited with any text editor, there are also a number of WYSIWYG editors available, including some free ones.  A good one to start with is Nvu or the Nvu fork KompoZer, which is the editor I’m currently using.  Another good choice is the Composer component of SeaMonkey.

26.09.09 – NVU-Demonstration in Venlo (NL)

Am Sonnabend, den 26. September 2009, findet ab 13 Uhr in der niederländischen Stadt Venlo eine Demonstration der Niederländischen Volks-Union (NVU) mit Beteiligung niederländischer und deutscher freier Kräfte statt. Thema der Demonstration: “Gegen Kasino-Kapitalismus und Plutokratie! Ehrliche Gewinnverteilung für das Volk!”. Die Demonstration ist angemeldet und es werden die üblichen Auflagen erwartet. Besonders ist zu beachten, daß jeder Teilnehmer einen Personalausweis mitführen muß.

In Groot-Brittannië voeren allerlei antifasctisten keer op keer fel actie tegen  de British National party (BNP), en tegen aanverwante  rechts-activistische groeperingen van vooral Islamofobe aard. Tegelijk woeden er discussies over hoe je zulke fascistische verschijnselen tegengaat. Zowel acties als discussies bieden leerzame zaken voor antifascisten in Nederland.

Gisteren bijvoorbeeld wilde de English Defence League, een club die zegt te strijden tegen Islam-extremisme maar feitelijk gewoon anti-moslim is en verwant aan de BNP, actie voeren bij een moskee in aanbouw in Harrow, noord-Londen. Daartegen kwamen actievoerders, gemobiliseerd door United Against Fascism (UAF), in beweging. Een stevige politiemacht hield de antifascisten weg van de fascisten, er waren vechtpartijen en arrestaties. Dat meldt de Guardian, die erbij vertelt dat er 1000 betogers waren.

Wat de Guardian niet vertelt is hoeveel fascisten  er waren, en hoeveel antifascisten. Gelukkig valt dat te lezen op Lenin’s Tomb, in de vorm van een ooggetuigeverslag. We lezen daar over tientallen rechtse actievoerders, en duizenden tegenstanders. Vooral jonge moslims waren buitengewoon fel bezig, en het handjevol fascisten zou zonder politiebescherming nérgens geweest zijn.

Van het beeld dat je aan de Guardian zou kunnen overhouden – twee groepen, ongeveer even groot, die elkaar te lijf willen en door de politie uiteen gehouden worden – blijft weinig over. In werkelijkheid ging het om een grootschalig en heftig protest vanuit de moslimgemeenschap samen met  een deel van links. Een veel te smal deel van links trouwens, zoals het artikel vaststelt. De Socialist Workers Party was zichtbaar aanwezig, de vakbond UNITE ook, zo bleek uit meegevoerde vlaggen en dergelijke. 

De poging van fascisten om de bouw van een moskee aan te grijpen om de plaatselijke moslimgemeenschap angst aan te jagen, is met fel verzet  afgeslagen. Dat is – zo legt het artikel op Lenin’s Tomb uit – een goede zaak. Fascisten in en om de BNP – en ook die English Defence League – proberen hun kracht op straat weer op te bouwen, straatvechters aan te trekken om moslims en linkse mensen te belagen. De grote schaal van de reactie van vooral jonge moslims laat zien dat ze hiervoor niet zomaar de ruimte krijgen. Dat is maar goed ook, want die ruimte benutten fascisten vervolgens om meer aanhang en meer activisten te werven en hun hele machtspositie te versterken. Dat ze gisteren vernederend zijn verslagen door antifascisten betekent een tegenslag voor hun strategie.

Intussen beginnen gevestigde politici te reageren op de confrontaties tussen nazi’s en antifascisten zoals die in Harrow. John Denham, minister voor gemeenschapszaken, toont zich bezorgd. Hij beschrijft waar fascisten mee bezig zijn: moslims provoceren totdat ze gaan reageren. En het antwoord  is volgens hem dan een overreactie, en dat moet dus niet. Denham over de aanpak van de English Defence League: “Als je kijkt naar het soort demonstraties dat ze hebben georganiseerd, de gebruikte taal en de gekozen doelwitten, dan is duidelijk te zien dat het een tactiek is die bedoeld is om te provoceren, een reactie te krijgen en geweld te creëren. Het is belangrijk dat we, in de hele regering, er voor zorgen dat dit niet gebeurt. We moeten er voor zorgen dat mensen beseffen dat we dit aanpakken en dat het niet nodig is om dit aan te pakken door confrontatie.”

Goed hieraan is de erkenning dat het de fascisten zijn die aansturen op geweld. Bij hem geen geleuter over gelijkwaardige extremismes van links en van rechts. Het is réchts dat begint, dat geweld uitlokt en op gang brengt.  Maar de minister is blijkbaar wel minstens zo bang voor de “overreactie” van antifascisten,en vooral vanuit moslims, vanuit de Aziatische gemeenschap waartenen de nazi-provocaties zich vaak richten. Het met zo groot mogelijke groepen mensen verdrijven van fascisten is echter geen overreactie. Het is niet meer en niet minder dan hoognodige zelfverdediging.

Het is het soort zelfverdediging die we in Nederland ook nodig hebben – bijvoorbeeld tegen de neonazi’s van de Nederlandse Volksunie (NVU) die op zaterdag 26 september een optocht door Venlo willen houden. Moge de spirit van die talloze jonge Moslims en andere antifascisten in Venlo ook opduiken, en de nazi-optocht in de Maas doen helpen belanden waar ze hoort. Op de antifascistische website Laatzenietlopen.nl ongetwijfeld binnenkort meer.

HINWEIS: Der Kurs1 wird abgelöst durch den Kurs1a und dem zugehörigen Blog. Hier passiert nichts mehr. Das ist mein letzter Beitrag hier.

Der Verzicht auf die Überarbeitung erlaubt wie nebenbei die neuen Aufgaben für den Kurs1a abzuspulen. Zur Zeit pro Tag eine Aufgabe.
Ungewollt hat die Bezeichnung ein Qualitätsmerkmal im Namen: 1A. Enthält aber auch eine Zählweise und fragt nach 1b. 1b kann eine Kopie von 1a werden und spiegelbildlich für Nvu-Nutzer eingerichtet werden. Dann ist Kurs1 die dreimalige Überarbeitung seit 2005 und demnächst von Nvu bereinigt nur noch zuständig für KompoZer 0.7.10.

1a geht mit den künftigen neuen Versionen von KompoZer in künftige Überarbeitungen bis eine neue Version sich zu sehr von den vorigen unterscheidet und 1c entsteht.

1b bleibt statisch wie Nvu selbst. Für mich erstaunlich, dass auch im Sommer 2009 mehr neue Teilnehmer Fragen wegen Nvu stellen als für KompoZer. Das mag neben dem immer wieder neu bei Freeware-Sammlungen auftauchendem Nvu aber auch daran liegen, dass ich höchstens im Nvu-Forum gelegentlich erscheine. (Obwohl der Betreiber des Forums es aufgegeben hat, wie ich es als Mitglied z.B. am Datum seines letzten Einloggens sehen kann.)

Warum nun eine Verzweigung? Den Blog hier the making of Kurs1 halte ich nicht für ergiebig, was liegt einem an alten Erfahrungen? Gedacht hatte ich es als Hintergrund-Diskussionsplattform. Da Kurs1 keine Fortsetzungswünsche mehr hervorrufen sollte, richte ich eine Diskussionsplattform für 1a ein und starte neu.
Der Blog heißt folgerichtig kompozerkurs1a.

Como alternativa opensource ao Dreamweave para edição e criação de páginas para web, eu utilizava o kompozer que é a continuação do projeto NVU, porém ultimamente o kompozer vem dando  mitos problemas aqui no meu openSUSE 11.1. Um dos problemas é que o programa fecha sozinho e às vezes abre e logo fecha. Comecei a pesquisar em outros fóruns e verifiquei que o problema existe também em outras distros, por exemplo Ubuntu, o que me levou a matar a curiosidade sobre o Composer da Suíte SeaMonkey da Mozilla.

O SeaMonkey é um conjunto de aplicativos para a internet, contando com: navegador de internet, leitor de emails e grupos de notícias, cliente de IRC, editor de HTML e catálogo de endereços. Ele é a continuação da Suíte Mozilla por parte da comunidade.

Após a instalação verifiqei que o programa se parece muito com o Kompozer, mas, com um diferencial que é a estabilidade.  O legal que o SeaMonkey, além do editor web Composer também possui um navegador que pelas cores padrões me lembrou do antig Netscape com um jeitão Firefox de ser…rs. O programa é leve e super rápido e a navegação na web é ótima! Vale a pena experimentar e se você está tendo problemas com o Kompozer experimente o SeMonkey Composer. É um ótima alternativa livre para o Dreamweaver.

El alumnado de 4º de la ESO realizará esta práctica para evaluar su aprendizaje en la unidad didáctica dedicada a creación de páginas web.

Así, deberéis hacer una web sobre cualquier tema con las siguientes condiciones:

a) La web tendrá como mínimo cinco páginas.

b) Cada página tendrá enlaces internos para subir y bajar al inicio y al final de la página.

c) Cada página mostrará al menos una imagen (150 píxeles de ancho y alto).

d) La web incluirá tres hiperenlaces relacionados con el tema de la misma.

e) Las páginas de tu sitio web estarán enlazadas entre sí.

f) La web debe incluir un mapa de imagen.

g) La web tendrá al menos dos vídeos, insertando también enlaces a los mismos.

h) Deberás publicar la web en www.bravenet.com.

Todas las tablas tendrán de ancho 700 píxeles.

Los criterios de evaluación son los siguientes:

Nichts, was naheliegt, nur dass der Kurs1 nur mit Nvu und KompoZer erstellt wurde und dies sich soeben geändert hat. Seit längerem benutze ich zusätzlich zu Kompozer mit WYSIWYG auch Notepad++ und bevorzuge Handcodierung. Umgekehrt sogar, zusätzlich und nur bei Bedarf zu Notepad++ kommt auch KompoZer zum Einsatz. Nur, finde ich, muss ein Kurs zu Nvu und KompoZer, auch mit diesen generiert werden. Das war so und bleibt auch so.

Heute komme ich dazu, die Ankündigung im Gästebuch wahr zu machen, und den tag meta name=”generator” content=”KompoZer” einzufügen. 48 Dateien *.html sind im Verzeichnis. Demnach hätte ich mit KompoZer 48 Dateien zu öffen, mit Copy und 48mal Paste die Ergänzung einzufügen, das ganze auf Festplatte zu sichern und hochzuladen. Da wäre Prinzipientreue ja so etwas wie Masochismus.

Mit Notepad++ mache ich noch nicht einmal die Dateien auf. Mit “In Dateien suchen../Ersetzen” wird der Endetag von title um 4 Zeilen mit neuen matatags zum Ersetzen ergänzt, die zu wählenden Dateien auf *.html im gewünschten Verzeichnis beschränkt und OK. Kann man nicht mal zusehen, so schnell sind die Dateien geöffnet, geändert und geschrieben.

Ist der Ruf erst ruiniert…, natürlich setze ich gleich das massenweise Hochladen der 48 Dateien mit Filezilla fort. Wollte zuerst aber das Geständnis hier ablegen. Vielleicht gibt es jemanden, für den die Notepad++ -Nutzung neu ist.
Ansonsten kehre ich wieder zu KompoZer zurück. Auch bei meiner anderen Arbeit. Immer, wenn es schneller als von Hand geht, ein ganzes Bündel richtigen Code und korrekt geschriebener Styles mit WYSIWYG zusammenzuschieben und per Copy and Paste in den Quelltext einzufügen.
Übrigens, warum mache ich in metatags und schreibe nicht Aufgabe 8, z.B. über runde Ecken oder Formulare? Weil keiner danach fragt. Metatags war im Gästebuch gefragt.

Suites Ofimáticas

Las actualizaciones anuales de productos es una práctica a la que se han acogido la mayoría de las empresas que, aunque evidentemente lícita, obligan a los usuarios a desembolsar un dinero que en medio de una crisis puede ahorrarse y que además hace que nuestros equipos se quedan obsoletos más pronto al ofrecerse características que a menudo sólo son accesibles para los ordenadores más nuevos y potentes.

Internet en un gran baúl en el que se puede encontrar multitud de información, que acerca al usuario a todos los rincones del mundo y que también tiene un hueco para muchos programas de carácter gratuito que ofrecen tanto empresas de reconocida trayectoria como usuarios que, de forma altruista, quieren ceder sus creaciones y organizaciones.

Podríamos empezar con las suites Ofimáticas, donde OpenOffice se ha convertido en una excelente alternativa de código abierto al tradicional Microsoft Office y que además, con el objetivo de incrementar aún más su adopción ha empezado a colgar en su web una serie de cursos para animar a los usuarios; el primero de ellos se titula “De Word a Writer”, el nombre de los procesadores de texto de Microsoft Office y OpenOffice respectivamente.

Además de OpenOffice, que incluye los programas Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw y Base, el usuario también tiene a su disposición Gnome Office, la suite libre y gratuita del proyecto Gnome, que cuenta con Abiword, Gnumeric, Gnome.DB y Gimp. Por otra parte, desarrollada de forma nativa para los usuarios de Mac, existe NeoOffice, que ya va por la versión 3.0.

Todas estas suites se han centrado en que exista la mayor compatibilidad de formatos posible. Con OpenOffice, por ejemplo, podrías guardar un documento de texto como si fuera uno de Microsoft Word 95.

Seguridad

En el terreno de la seguridad quizá el más conocido sea Avast Home, un antivirus que goza de mucha popularidad y que sólo requiere el registro, por parte del usuario, 60 días después de que se haya descargado. Avast Home Edition es capaz de detectar gran cantidad de virus conocidos e incluso de detectar modificaciones realizadas por virus que no conoce. También funciona contra gusanos y troyanos. Contiene protección para el correo electrónico y un scanner residente que se ejecuta al entrar en Windows y controla constantemente que no se ejecuten virus en el sistema.

La empresa de seguridad española Panda Security, que en su página web ofrece una exploración gratuita del PC a quien lo desee con su herramienta ActiveScan 2.0, ha lanzado hace apenas un par de semanas Panda Cloud Antivirus, un antivirus gratuito, del estilo de Avast Home pero que aprovecha las ventajas de la cloud computing para, en lugar de cargar el PC del usuario con las firmas de los virus, trasladar todo el proceso de identificación del malware en la nube. La principal ventaja de esta aproximación es un ordenador más ligero. Panda Cloud Antivirus incluye protección antivirus local y remota, anti-spyware, antirootkit, análisis heuristico y una cache de goodware.

Correo, edición fotográfica y desarrollo web

Quizá el programa de correo electrónico gratuito más popular sea Express, el cliente de Microsoft, peroThunderbird, la oferta de Mozilla para el segmento de código abierto, es muy valorado por los usuarios. Como siempre, estos dos clientes de correo electrónico tienen entre sí diferentes más o menos importantes, y ante un diseño de firmas muy limitado por parte de Thunderbird, éste ofrece algunas mejoras sobre el anterior, como una mayor seguridad. Entre las nuevas características habría que destacar las etiquetas del mensaje, vista de carpetas, protección anti-Phishing, mayor seguridad, historial de la sesión de navegación y mejora en la notificación de alertas de nuevos correos.

En el terreno de la fotografía quizá el más conocido sea Gimp, que se incluye en el suite ofimática Gnome Office. Desde sus comienzos a la versión versión actual, la 2.6 Gimp ha ido obteniendo multitud de mejoras que atraen a cada vez más usuarios que buscan un programa simple de utilizar y que además sea gratuito. Gimp permite editar fotografías, componer montajes y crear imágenes nuevas. Funciona en múltiples sistemas operativos e idiomas y es muy potente comparado con el resto de software freeware de este género. Puede usarse de forma sencilla para pintar imágenes, como un programa avanzado para el retoque de imágenes o para convertir imágenes de un formato a otro.

En el terreno de la creatividad, aunque en esta ocasión en el de las páginas web, también existen alternativas gratuitas. Les proponemos NVU, un editor de páginas Web WYSIWIG gratuito, que permite trabajar en modo visual o en código fuente. Está basado en el código de Mozilla y usa el motor gecko para una mejor compatibilidad del código. NVU (pronunciado N-view, para una nueva visión) hace de la creación y gestión de una página web coser y cantar. Con NVU cualquiera puede crear páginas web y gestionar un site sin demasiadas habilidades técnicas o conocimientos de HTM, aunque está claro que si los tienes mejor que mejor.

Video

Aunque Windows Media Video se incorpora de serie con Windows, no por ello es el único reproductor multimedia y menos el más versátil. Optamos por VLC Media Player como una de las mejores opciones que se ofrecen dentro de la categoría freeware no sólo por la gran cantidad de formatos que soporta, sino por la calidad de reproducción que ofrece, sin saltos ni cortes. VLC (ex- VideoLAN Client) es un excelente reproductor multimedia gratuito de alta portabilidad para varios formatos de audio (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) así como DVDs, VCDs, y con soporte para varios protocolos streaming (reproducir el archivo en tiempo real mientras se descarga). También puede funcionar como servidor de streaming en monotarea o multitarea para IPv4 o IPv6 en una red de banda ancha.

Y ya que hablamos de video, si en lugar de verlos lo que queremos es trabajar con ellos, podemos optar por VirtualDub, que ya va por la versión 1.8.8 y que se ha calificado como “una de las herramientas más potentes para la manipulación de imágenes”. Entre las funciones de este editor de vídeo el usuario podrá encontrar desde el corte de vídeos a la unión y la extracción de pistas hasta el procesamiento de las mismas, teniendo a su disposición gran cantidad de Plugins para tratamientos muy concretos.

Una de las cosas más valoradas por los usuarios es la posibilidad de trabajar con archivos AVI independientemente del códec que utilicen siempre y cuando se tenga instalado en el computador.

Grabación y virtualización

El tema de la grabación de CD y DVD es un gran saco de opciones. En el terreno de los programas de pago las dos opciones rivales son Nero y Roxio, dos soluciones que se caracterizan de permitir al usuario hacer casi lo que quiera con multitud de archivos multimedia y por contar con seguidores apasionados por una y otra opción. Lamentablemente no hay una suite de grabación gratuita tan completa como estos programas que no sólo permiten la grabación directa, sino trabajar con vídeos, música y fotografías para hacer montajes, pases de diapositivas y mezclas, y el usuario tendrá que optar por tener varios programas.

No obstante, hay alguna buena aproximación, como Infrarecorder cuyo logo recuerda al de Roxio, por cierto. Este programa gratuito y traducido al español no sólo cuenta con un interfaz muy amena e intuitiva, sino con un asistente que guiará a los usuarios por las funciones de grabación más deseadas. 
También muy conocido, gratuito y valorado por los usuarios es ImgBurn, que más que un completo programa de grabación es más bien una utilidad con la que podrás para grabar diferentes ‘imágenes’ de archivo, es decir las ISO, BIN o NRG fácil y cómodamente.

Por último y por la era en la que estamos, no querríamos cerrar este artículo sin hablar de la virtualización, un concepto que cada vez está más de moda por las enormes posibilidades que ofrece. Hace unos años vía opción de pago, Microsoft Virtual PC te permite tener más de un sistema operativo en tu ordenador. Es decir que podrás dar tus primeros pasos en Linux o, si lo prefieres, empezar a probar el nuevo Windows 2007 que Microsoft acaban de lanzar al mercado en su versión Release Candidate.

Concordo com você que é um tema absolutamente polêmico! Afinal de contas, pirataria, se você se deixar levar, se transforma em um vício. Começa de maneira simples:

1° Você sente a necessidade de um programa que facilite sua vida;

2° Acessa a internet e procura por seu nome;

3° Ao encontrá-lo, você descobre que sua licença é muito cara e fora das suas possibilidades;

4° Então você descobre uma série de sites e blogs com propagandas absolutamente atraentes do tipo: “ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS4 + CRACK GRÁTIS AQUI BAIXE JÁ”

5° Voce clica e baixa!

Se você já fez isso, está cometendo uma injustiça com o desenvolvedor do programa e um terrível crime contra sua criatividade e capacidade de resolver problemas!

Em suma, use a internet de forma justa! Se você não tem possibilidade de pagar e adquirir os direitos de utilização de um programa, procure uma alternativa. Existem muitos programas que dão conta de todas as suas necessidades do momento e, ainda vão além da sua expectativa. Um exemplo é o BR Office, pacote de programas e aplicativos office que é uma alternativa muito eficaz para quem não tem possibilidade de comprar o Microsoft Office. Veja abaixo um exemplo de porgramas pagos e seus respectivos substitutos:

Update 14 Nov 09: I just came across Tim Stiffler-Dean’s excellent article on goodwebpractices.com, which I recommend you read before my own. He has experience with the main CMSes whereas I have only worked with WordPress, so far.

I need to revamp my church’s website. The current website is done in Frontpage (superseded by Expression Web). I started by evaluating reviews of different web design tools, including Dreamweaver, Microsoft Expression Web and Nvu/Kompozer. These were my findings:

• Dreamweaver: costly, pro features but rather complex to use
• Expression Web: affordable (upgrade option), easier to learn (‘Microsoft’ feel), reputed to create cleaner markup than Frontpage
• Nvu/Kompozer: free, but interface isn’t that friendly or intuitive

My first thought was to move to Expression Web.

In my research, however, I found that it might be better to use a CMS such as Joomla or Drupal, as the church does not have a webmaster; routine updating is done, but no-one knows how to create new pages and links. A CMS with multiple user accounts would take the pressure off the one person in charge of the website. This is the difference I see in the focus of the CMS applications compared to Dreamweaver. Both programs do design and management, but with a different focus.

Then, there’s WordPress. I came across this page: http://www.churchcommunicationspro.com/2007/01/24/5-reasons-to-choose-wordpress-to-run-your-church-website/ After reading, I realised that WordPress is not a full CMS, but so far I think this is the best option because it is similar enough to one, and hopefully more user-friendly. My vision is that the people in charge of the different ministries of the church will take ownership of their sections and make it a ‘live’ site, rather than a static one only updated occasionally by one (busy) person. There will also be a unified look due to the use of templates.

Here’s how I evaluate the options:

• WordPress: simplest interface, with sufficient options for user accounts and add-ons; user-friendly help online (the ‘Codex’), and tips within the interface itself
• Joomla!: interface looks friendly enough, but some jargon (e.g. ‘breadcrumbs’)
• Drupal: also a clean interface, but also a bit technical like Joomla (html code appears in some screenshots too)

I think you couldn’t go wrong with any, but WordPress just seems the easiest for the absolutely non-technical, yet its features seem sufficient for a basic church website (which is my goal). News can be added as posts, while more permanent content goes on static pages. WordPress is not primarily geared for managing page organization, but it can do the job, including page hierarchy.

I would really recommend installing the software you fancy on localhost (i.e. a virtual website hosted on your own computer, no Internet needed), as can be done with WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. I used the recommended XAMPP package to install and evaluate WordPress on my own workstation. That was how I concluded that WordPress is a good option for my church project – the church has no full-time webmaster and I want to enable church staff to contribute to and maintain the site without hassle. The more user-friendly the software is, the less likely something is to ‘break’, the better. Trying out your own localhost installation is an excellent way to see if it meets your needs.

Update: I’ve installed WordPress on a test domain given by my webhost. I used FileZilla to FTP the WordPress and theme files. I then had to do some trial-and-error because I couldn’t do the install, and subsequently couldn’t change the CSS files. This involved changing the PHP file permissions, which I’m not familiar with. But I managed to install and edit the CSS without setting excessive permissions, as warned against in the WordPress Codex.

Thus, so far I’d say that there’s always some techie-type procedures involved in setting up a website. For my scenario, the techie part was getting the domain and mySQL database set up by the web host, using FileZilla for FTP, and experimenting with PHP file permissions. After that, there’s still some know-how needed, to customize the CSS and the layout of the theme, but once things are set up, end-users can just click and write. This is the main benefit: for the writers and editors, simple, straightforward content creation.

Result: a unified design; timely updates; good communication.

Tuto sobotu se v žižkovském klubu Matrix uskutečnil 1. Zelený punk tulipán. Přestože očekávaná punková legenda Zeměžluč  nakonec bohužel nevystoupila, akce to byla přinejmenším velmi povedená. Lidí dorazil slušný počet, takže se společně pilo a pogovalo dlouho do noci.

Do Matrixu jsme dorazili kolem půl osmé a ačkoliv byl začátek akce psaný na šestou, svůj set právě začínala první kapela, pražští punkový drakobijci, Vychcaný knedlíky. Oproti nedávnému koncertu na Miladě měli mnohem lepší zvuk, takže jsme si jejich energický set užili ještě více. Místy se i v zatím celkem vylidněném sále slušně pogovolo, tudíž není pochyb, že “knedlikpank” lidi stále baví. Dočkali jsme se i přídavku a na závěr samozřejmě i již tradiční podívané

Následovalo vystoupení mostecké punkové smečky Spínací špendlík, které jsem měl tu čest vidět naživo poprvé. Jejich vcelku “obyčejný pank” mě nikdy z desky příliš neoslovil, ovšem na živo mě kluci opravdu bavili. Jedinou vadou na kráse byla absence basáka, takže celkový sound působil poněkud suchým dojmem. Ale to přítomným punkáčům určitě nevadilo a rádi si se špendlíkama zazpívali jejich songy, mezi nimi třeba “hitovku” Vítej do Mostu.

To, že Rokycanští Sex Deviants nejsou na punkové scéně žádnými nováčky, nám dokázali i na punkovém tulipánu. V čele s půvabnou zpěvačkou předvedli nadupaný set plný vypalovaček. Jejich melodický punk-rock ve stylu např. Anti-flag sice není ničím novým a objevným, ale přesto dokáže výborně bavit.

Pražští “underpunkový” A bude hůř jsou také zárukou kvalitní punkové hudby a svojí reputaci si nezkazili ani v Matrixu. Jsem sice příznivcem trochu jiného stylu, ale rád jsem si na jejich muziku “skočil” a zařval některé jejich vypalovačky, jako například již legendární ryby:-)

Zeměžluč bohužel nedorazila, takže jsme se už mohli těšit na jednu z největších tuzemských punkových legend, N.V.Ú.  Téhle již 20 let hrající punkové mašinérii snad nikdy nedojde dech. I přes jisté hlasové indispozice frotmana Štěpána předvedli kluci brilantní výkon. Playlist složený napůl z hitovek a napůl z méně známnějších skladeb nenchal nikoho v sále ani na chvilku vydechnout. Pogovalo se jako o život, zpívalo spolu s kapelou a všichni do jednoho jsme si to parádně užili. Měl jsem obrovské štěstí, že můj foťák zůstal i navzdory pogu celý

Akce skončila před jednou hodinou ranní a všichni jsme se pomalu rozcházeli domů plni pozitivních dojmů z celého večera. Zeměžluč si snad užijeme příště.

De menukaart voormensen die iets tegenhet opkomend fascisme willen ondernemenbiedt volop variatie. Nazi’s marcheren zowel op 21 februari als op 1 maart; antifascisten houden tegen beide optochten een tegenactie, en gaat bovendien zelfop 21 februari elders een betoging houden.

Op 21 februari heeft de Nationale Volksunie (NVU), een neonazi-partijtje, een mars aangekondigd in Amersfoort. Vanuit de Antifascistische Aktie (AFA) is een oproep gedaan aan de bevolking om hier ter plekke luidruchtig tegen te protesteren. Dit onder het motto: “laat ze niet lopen”, tevens de titel van een voor de gelegenheid in het leven geroepen actie-weblog waar berichtgeving rond nazi-mars, tegenactie en eerdere NVU-optochten verzameld is.

Maar op dezelfde dag heeft AFA ook een eigen demonstratie, en wel in Zoetermeer. Het motto is: Stop racisme, geen vrijplaats voor nazi’s! Dat laatste slaat mede op het feit dat Zoetermeer een plaats is waar de Nationaal Socialistische Actiegroep (NSA), ook een nazi-splinter, in diet plaats min of meer haar thuisbasis heeft. AFA DenHaag heeft meer gegevens op haar site, evenals AFA landelijk.

En dan iserde belangrijkste actie in deze reeks: de hopelijk grote tegendemonstratie tegen de fascistenclub Voorpost. Die wil, gesteund door geestverwanten uit België (Vlaams Belang), een optocht houden. Antifascisten roepen op tot een tegenbetoging; op het weblog Stopvoorpost lees je wat, hoe en waarom.

Tot zover een klein overzicht; nieuws van dit front vindt je natuurlijk ook steeds via Indymedia. Het hele beeld vraagt echter om wat commentaar.

Het is goed dat er tegen de her en der opduikende fascistische splinters - NVU, NSA, Voorpost – actie op straat gevoerd wordt. Deze groepjes zijn niet zo ongevaarlijk als hun nogal belachelijke uitdossing – een kruising tussen de kledij van een buiten de prijzen gevallen carnavalsvereniging, een wegens wansmaak failliete feestwinkel en een beroerd operettegezelschap – kan doen vermoeden. Fascistische optochten – ik weiger dit soort  acties demonstraties te noemen – verspreiden hatelijk vergif, en dienen tegelijk als plek waar uiterst rechts zelfvertrouwen wint en haar netwerken kan verstevigen en uitbouwen. Als dit ongestoord kan plaatsvinden, groeit dit soort politiek aan kracht, en dan vergaat ons het lachen voor we er erg in hebben. Tegenacties hebben nut, ze zijn noodzakelijk, een links dat deze noodzaak negeert of verwaarloost is een nalatig links.

Daar komt bij dat de nazi-activiteiten niet in een vacuuum plaatsvinden, maar in een politiek klimaat waarin uiterst rechts een onrustbarende kracht en uitstraling heeft. Wilders en zijn PVV – die geen gewoon rechts-liberalisme of conservatisme, maar wel degelijk een vorm van fascisme vertegenwoordigen – staan er in peilingen goed voor, al wekenlang flink boven de 20 zetels. Nee, Wilders en de neo-nazi-splinters zijn geen vrienden. Maar tegenover migranten, links en alles wat serieus democratisch is staan ze aan dezelfde kant. En de door Wilders mee aangejaagde rechtse atmosfeer biedt het klimaat waarin neonazi’s kunnen gedijen.

Het kort houden van hun clubjes en optochtjes is dus wel degelijk onderdeel van een serieuze strategie tegen opkomend fascisme. Als de straatbendes-in-spe, NVU en NSA, meer geaccepteerd worden, vervalt immers een hoofdreden van Wilders om er niets mee te maken te willen hebben. Die reden ligt in de slechte PR die contact met zulke clubs hem oplevert. Zo heel groot is de inhoudelijke afstand op zichzelf niet. Hoe meer neo-nazi’s hun gang kunnen gaan zonder strijdbare oppositie tegen te komen, hoe groter de kans dat de afstand die het Wilders-fascisme van zulke clubs houdt, kleiner wordt. En dan heb je de contouren van de fascistische beweging die én een parlementaire én een paramilitaire vleugel aan het opbouwen is, een angstaanjagend scenario. Antifascistisch protest tegen de fascistische splinters is één van de dingen die nodig zijn p dit tegen te gaan.

Maar het is wel zaak om dit effectief te mak en prioriteiten te durven stellen. De actie tegen Voorpost is, juist vanwege de mogelijk vrij serieuze omvang van de Voorpost-mars zelf, van groot belang. De actie van 21 februari tegen de NVU is ook belangrijk, al denk ik wel dat die energie wegtrekt van de aanloop naar 1 maart.

Het feit dat antifascisten hun initiatief op 21 februari versnipperen tussen Zoetermeer en Amersfoort is echter niet handig. De aanpak rond Amersfoort – inzetten op actie vanuit de bevolking zelf – vind ik zeer positief. Maar die aanpak eist aandacht, geconcentreerde inzet van antifascisten met inzicht en ervaring. En dat veel van die mensen die dag gaan betogen in Zoetermeer, maakt het werk in Amersfoort er niet makkelijker op. Ik denk dat linkse activisten, juist in een situatie waarin we met weinigen zijn, kéúzes moeten durven maken. De keuze komende weken zou wat mij betreft zijn: stop Voorpost als belangrijkste actie, en op de 21ste februari voorrang voor Amersfoort.

En nog iets, ter overweging.Ik noem tegendemonstraties tegen fascistisch splinters ónderdeel van een br’édere antifascistische strategie. De neiging om er echter de kern van te maken, is onjuist. Het is Wilders en zijn PVV die volgens mij de spil vormt van ee werkelijk serieus fascistisch gevaar. Hoe we dáártegen een effectieve vuist maken? Ik ben er niet uit. Maar ik vind dat voor dat onderwerp in antifascistische kringen veel en veel te weinig aandacht bestaat.
