I started out in November with the idea of hitchiking around the west coast and gathering stories of the homeless while, at the same time, trying to find my own income. What instead happened was that I made it to Oakland for a few days, getting frustrated that I couldn’t find even a temporary shelter open and thus no stable platform from which to look for work, and then leaving for Fresno. In Fresno, I have my mother, and a safe place to stay (safe if you discount my sanity). I decided I’d stay a week and check out the job market there. It became clear after the first day that nothing was going to happen for me in Fresno regarding income.

With a few days before I could venture out, I contacted friends in Los Angeles and San Francisco, asking for couches. None were offered. I went onto couchsurfing.org and tried the same. None were offered. Finally, I knew of a friend from Portland that was coming down to San Francisco that weekend and had planned to drive back up. She said she could take me back up to Portland that Sunday if I could make it to San Francisco. So that was the plan I made.

Before leaving, I had my mother’s friend, a parole officer, show where all the homeless in Fresno stay. I was somewhat surprised to see such a large group of people… or perhaps the group was not as large as I thought, but the one-storiedness of all of Fresno made it seem large. Anyway, the homeless in Fresno live mostly along a few streets downtown, near the freeway underpasses, in tents. Mile-long rows of tents on one side and plastic thrash bags thrown across the street, filled with food wrappers, bottles and human feces.

I arrived in San Francisco and spent a rather eventless evening walking myself and my pack around the downtown area. I watched the faces of 6th street between Market and Mission, where many of the city’s homeless services (and discount liquor stores) are located. The homeless in San Francisco, in general, have a different feel about them. They feel as if they are not so removed from the rest of the city. They are, instead, part of the culture you expect to see and hear yelling obscenities at the sidewalk. Much like Portland, really, but somehow less annoying and more amusing.

After two weeks gone, I returned to Portland to surf on couches. It is a humbling and frustrating thing. It is considered a more affluent way of getting sleep than being at a hundred-bed shelter, but it doesn’t allow for much job-hunting when you constantly have to carry all your shit with you. Not to mention- all the time I’ve spent in coffeeshops, waiting out the cold, I’ve seen a number of other tired and mostly hopeless-looking couchsurfers coming in trying to drop off resumes at places that no longer accept them. In this, at least, it is good to not feel alone.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, the constant lip-smacking that some combover man with thick glasses is making in this otherwise quiet room is inspiring violence, and I’d rather spend the freezing night huddled to a stone church than in a toasty jail cell.

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority is issuing a precautionary boil water/bottled water advisory for neighborhoods that experienced a temporary loss of water earlier today after a drop of water pressure in the vicinity of 16th Street, Military Road, Piney Branch and Eastern Avenue, NW. Foto do que está na minha casa no feriado!

Ontem eu resolvi dar uma olhada em alguns blogs de games, alguns sites e afins. No embalo escutei alguns podcasts e ouvi o que os jornalistas de tecnologia e games andam dizendo sobre o mercado e me deparei com um monte de reclamações de como isso ou aquilo é ruim e tal.

Bom, talvez seja porque eu estou há um mês editando uma revista, mas sinceramente ainda não vi muito disso. Uma das reclamações que me deixou pasmo foi o fato de falarem que o jornalista de games não tem tempo pra jogar que é um cara que rala quase o tempo inteiro. Enfim, sim, você trabalha pra caramba e não joga tanto quanto gostaria porque “Its a Fucking Job God Dammit”! Os caras pagam você para analisar os jogos, fazer pautas e escrever sobre elas e mesmo “jogando pouco” você ainda joga muito mais do que qualquer outro mortal neste planeta. Acima tem a foto dos games que estão na minha casa. Eles vieram direto da redação e assessorias de games para a minha casa no feriado. Me pergunta se eu estou jogando? Claro, entre um e outro texto da nova edição da Nintendo World, rola sem dó nem piedade uma partidinha de qualquer um desses jogos aí. O que me der vontade é o que eu vou jogar.

Outro ponto interessante que eu escutei nos podcasts da vida foi sobre o fato do trabalhador neste mercado não ser muito valorizado. Eu acredito que existam 2 fatores: o primeiro é o fato dos caras não se valorizarem e o segundo ser o nosso mercado em relação as vendas uma bosta.

O analista de games ganha uma merreca para falar sobre um jogo sim, mas esse valor tá bem longe de ser um trampo que desmereça o que o cara faz. Em relação a “não ter os games para jogar” é outra reclamação estúpida. O Freelancer que mora longe e quer escrever para uma revista de games tem sim que por obrigação ter o jogo em casa porque não é sempre que a redação tem como mandar isso pra ele. E os prazos de produção são realmente bem curtos. Mas além disso, se o freelancer quiser tirar o rabo do sofá pegar um ônibus e vir até a sala de jogos da editora para testar os games será muito bem vindo. Nego só sabe reclamar e reclamar.

Sim, nossas vendas no mercado nacional são uma merda! Enquanto em outros países se vendem 10 milhões de jogos, no Brasil esse número cai para 10 mil, talvez 20 se o jogo for um grande sucesso. É uma pena! E é com esses 20 mil jogos (vamos ser otimistas!) e sua porcentagem de lucro que vai de 10% a 25% que o dito mercado de games brasileiro paga por tudo o que faz e incluo dentro disso toda a redação e reportagem para revistas e websites através de anúncios.

Mas o que me deixa chateado é saber que um cara de uma empresa de games famosa veio me dizer que o México e os outros países da América Latina vendem mais do que o Brasil. Isso não é só uma verdade, mas também uma realidade. Os impostos em nosso país são muito altos e o contrabando também. Enquanto uma empresa de games monta sua base por aqui e tenta fazer as coisas da maneira como ditam as regras nacionais, um contrabandista traz o game de fora (sim de um país como o México!) sem pagar impostos para vender com 85% de lucro não dando a mínima chance da empresa oficial se estabelecer. Sim, meus amigos o problema do Brasil não está só nas editoras que pagam mal ou nos funcionários desqualificados, mas sim na nossa economia que ainda é ruim. O buraco é sempre muito mais embaixo. Por isso que reclamar paliativamente das coisas não resolve porra nenhuma!

A empresa que eu citei acima não investe no Brasil, mas eles já montaram um escritório no México, onde por lá a coisa vai de vento em popa.

Outra coisa que me deixou chateado é que eu sinto que falta muito comprometimento por parte dos jornalistas de games. As pessoas gostam de reclamar para caramba, mas não fazem nada para melhorar suas situações. Tem gente que trabalha pra ganhar o equivalente a uma cervejinha, mas como curte games acaba aceitando a coisa do jeito que ela é. Não façam isso! Cogitem mudar de profissão, cogitem largar seus cargos e sair para uma empreitada rumo a outra coisa. Não fique infeliz enfurnado em uma redação xingando deus e o mundo por ter um salário minúsculo pro que você faz. Tá infeliz então vá procurar algo que lhe dê mais condições. Se você reclama, definitivamente essa área não é pra você!

Fazer revistas de games exige entre outras coisas criatividade. É um trabalho criativo! Não é só jogar, mas criar coisas que atraiam o leitor seja ele de site ou de revista. E se você não tem pique pra isso aceite que não está apto para este mercado.

Quer ganhar mais? Então estude e faça concursos públicos, termine sua faculdade e projete sua vida para frente. O dito mercado de games brasileiro é coalhado de pessoas sem qualificação que acham que por ter um blog onde traduz coisas de vários lugares é melhor do que os outros. Tristeza.

Eu fico absolutamente revoltado com gente que vive falando um monte de besteira e não faz nada pra mudar. E ainda por cima acha que, contratado, se fizer uma porcaria de trabalho talvez seus chefes se toquem de que ele na verdade precisa é de mais dinheiro e resolvam lhe dar um aumento. Olha que pensamento absurdo! Se você faz um mal trabalho então, o máximo que você vai ganhar é mesmo um pé na bunda, isso sem falar em prejudicar o seu próprio trabalho e de ter um portifólio de merda!

Os engessados jornalistas de games dizem que estão tristes por não terem apoio das empresas grandes e oficiais. Esperam o game e os releases caírem no colo.

A verdade é que quando eu trabalhei na área de 1999 até 2004, eu sentia que a gente não tinha mesmo apoio nenhum. As coisas eram mais difíceis e não havia condições de contatar todas as empresas para ter acesso a imagens e conteúdos oficiais. Atualmente eu me vejo espantado em saber que muitas empresas já fincaram seus pés por aqui. Ou seja mesmo considerado um mercado de merda para videogames, as empresas sabem que estamos avançando, mesmo que em passinhos de tartaruga, para um dia em que o mercado deve se estabilizar e melhorar.

E  falando assim, qual é a função dos jornalistas de games? É de aguentar firme e de fazer o melhor trabalho que puder porque se não somos valorizados agora, se estivermos na área no futuro seremos. O que é preciso fazer agora é barulho! Faça barulho! Não fique parado aí seu bundão! O Brasil está cheio de escolas que vão ensinar um cara como você a fazer um game, está cheio de revistas boas e ruins, mas que falam sobre o assunto.

Acho que rola uma completa falta de engajamento nas coisas. O repórter tá com saco cheio das coisas como elas estão e o leitor sente isso no resultado final. Tá na hora de mexer nas coisas, de não aceitar a derrota.

Uma coisa que me deixou puto outro dia foi ter percebido que um dia depois da primeira edição da NW como editor sair da gráfica, o IGN colocou no ar uma sequência de imagens novas de um game cuja assessoria havia me dito que não havia nada. Eu fiquei absolutamente revoltado. A única reação que tive foi a de ligar para a empresa em questão, procurar o superior mais superior que eu encontrei e desabafar tudo pra ele. Numa parte da conversa eu disse: “Eu sei que no Brasil se a gente dá um peido acaba por pagar imposto sobre isso, não precisa me contar isso pq eu nasci aqui! So, lets cut the crap! Eu passei 3 semanas implorando por imagens de um game que vocês liberaram mais tarde e isso me prejudica e prejudica vocês. Certamente, o seu game não vai vender tanto quanto gostaria porque um veículo importante como o meu deixou de falar do que você produziu. Nós somos um único mercado e eu sei que o Brasil vai crescer e certamente um dia você vai vir aqui e me mandar releases pedindo para que eu fale de você! E se o meu veículo não tiver morrido por causa das coisas que vocês fazem eu certamente vou ajudá-lo. Eu não quero mais correr atrás da internet, eu sou revista então me trate como uma por favor”.

Bastou este discurso chato pra que a minha relação com os assessores melhorasse bastante. Este mês recebi coisas que o IGN só vai receber próximo a minha data de lançamento nas bancas e provavelmente o atraso na produção da informação impressa na minha revista vai melhorar aos poucos. Eu mandei um email para um dos antigos colaboradores da revista sobre as informações terem sido entregues para o IGN e sabe o que ele me disse? “Ah, Renato mas eu acho que querer ser o IGN já é demais!”… Po, por isso que esse mercado é assim. Aceitar o derrotismo e não vestir a camisa do produto que você faz é o que prejudica você e os outros. Eu não quero ser o IGN, eu quero ser melhor do que o IGN! Eu quero ter notícias que o IGN não tem. É difícil porque eles moram nos EUA e vão aos estúdios a hora em que quiserem. O mercado deles é desenvolvido e eles cagam em dólar. Certo. Mas eu quero ser assim algum dia, mas se eu aceitar que as coisas são como são isso nunca vai acontecer. Por isso ao invés de ficar aí reclamando faça alguma coisa.

No Japão eu aprendi que ao entrar em uma empresa você faz parte dela pra mal ou pra bem tudo o que você faz influencia na vida do próximo. Tem que se dedicar. Ganhando 1 ou 100 mil não importa, se você aceitou então se esforce.

Eu lembro da minha ex-namorada no Japão me dizendo: “Quando você for comprar a sua televisão LCD compre uma da Hitachi porque economiza energia e ajuda o meio ambiente. A imagem também é melhor e bla bla bla…” Ela tinha acabado de ser aprovada para trabalhar na empresa e havia lido tudo sobre os produtos da Hitachi e o histórico da empresa. É uma pena que não exista Hitachi aqui porque senão eu compraria a tv que ela me indicou só porque fiquei feliz pelo jeito como ela falava de seu novo trabalho.

Acho que tem que ser assim. Precisamos de pessoas engajadas em fazer o melhor, mesmo não ganhando o suficiente. Se você for um bom profissional certamente mesmo estando infeliz no seu dia-a-dia alguém vai tentar “roubá-lo” para outro trabalho. Isso é fato!

Eu olho para o histórico da Tambor que já foi Futuro e que antes era também uma parte da Conrad. E eu vejo uma história com altos e baixos, mas que gerou e ainda gera muitos profissionais desta área. É inegável isso. Já passou muito dinheiro nas mãos desta empresa e teve gente lá que ganhava muito bem. O tempo passou, eles tiveram problemas financeiros e quase quebraram. Quem saiu, saiu puto e foi pra outros lugares ganhando menos pra não ficar sem trampo, mas hoje eles estão se recuperando.

As pessoas me criticam por estar na Nintendo World hoje aceitando o que eles me pagam, mas verdade seja dita: não é tão ruim quanto todo mundo diz. Tenho estabilidade, não passo fome e faço uma coisa que gosto. Não trabalho por um prato de comida ou recebo pagamento em jogos de videogame.

A revista tá aí nas bancas. A próxima promete ser melhor ainda, a medida em que diversos maus vícios que existiam na editora forem sendo mudados gradativamente. Vamos ver. Espero que melhore e que meu pique me leve a fazer coisas muito legais. Eu faço essa revista pra mim e não pra editora. Com esse pique, certamente a Tambor deve mudar um pouco mais. O meu ritmo não pára.

Agora deixa eu trabalhar que o “feijão já tá queimando aqui”. Por favor comentem!

Well – it is definitely fall and the rain has set in. About two weeks ago I think we had an early projected frost – I ran out and grabbed all the remaining tomatoes which were many. A good amount were bad when ripened but some have been good. I need to spend some good hours tiding up the garden beds but no time to be had.

I have planted a winter garden but have cared for it little since planting around the 26th of Sept so we will see if it is fruitful. I did cover it for the frost. I need to build a cloche but not sure it will happen. Planted spinach, two kinds of kale, chard, broccoli and cabbage as well as onions and spring onions. The lettuce I had planted earlier has delivered some lettuce but not much. Also getting some chard from the little starts that never took off in May. I have tons of broccoli – need to pick some actually.

I keep meaning to dedicate a whole post to tomatoes but it might not happen. I was not feeling very good about my tomato harvest originally. Then I realized I started my seeds very late – 3rd week of March – so of course my harvest would be late. I ended up with quite a lot. For weeks I ate multiple tomatoes a day which was glorious. Some really delicious tomato and mayo sandwiches. The plants on the deck did not produce as well but that dirt was from last year – although generously amended. Farmer Wade told me to only use the dirt once for tomatoes every three years. Still great for other things – just not tomatoes. Purple Calabash and Black Krim were well worth it even if they did not produce many. The ones they did produce were divine.

I need to be much more careful with labeling my starts. Thought I had lots of Thessaloniki – only ended up with one! But it is a keeper.

So my list from the beginning of summer with notes for next winter when starting again:

Black Krim – yes – produces few but delicious – splits easily

Purple Calabash – yes – produces few

Thessaloniki (in honor of my brother who lives in Thessaloniki) – yes – takes awhile

Chadwick Cherry – excellent – yes – large cherry take awhile but then strong producer

Sugar Sweetie Cherry – no – were not good producers and way too small

Northern Delight – yes – not huge producers

Orange Oxheart – yes – need heat. Husband’s fav

Red Siberian – no – took forever and did not have good flavor – grown in diff places did not help.

Golden Nugget Cherry – yes – not huge producers

Tomatillos – yes – strong producer. and was planted even later than the others!

I want to plant my seeds as early as possible need to figure out when I should – either late Jan or early Feb. Need to plant much less so I do not have a zillion starts. I really want to grow enough so that I can can sauce or freeze.

I did freeze about three trays of basil – did some just in water not olive oil. Should do more of the mammoth next year less of the others.

The four winter squash are waiting to sweeten up – will try to wait till December as the Jubilee Farms farmer recommended to me. Wonderful farm they have.

Hot peppers – I am still amazed I grew anchos from seed – they were good. Also have many Thai chilis. And I got two orange peppers from a start I bought. Both were delicious! The purple jalapeno turned a gorgeous shade of red. But they were not hot? Even though they were ready to pick and the frost came….We also got a few pasillos and a few other kinds I grew…

I had left some carrots in and harvested some end of Sept – two were enormous!!! Pictures below. A few more still out there, soon to come in.

In Portland, you get a sandwich.
At The Peoples’ Sandwich of Portland, the sandwich gets you.*

The Peoples’ Sandwich of Portland opened its doors in July serving the people of Portland great sandwiches. The space is sparse with a few steel tables and chairs in their medium sized restaurant, so it seems larger when not fully occupied. Bar seating is available that provides a great view into their kitchen. The only seemly intended decoration is the mural on their wall with communistic style avant-garde art seen in the early 20th century in Russia. This simple style is carried through their overall image and their good humor of communism never ends, as the shop name implies. The menu is written on a brown craft paper and held up with painter’s tape, but don’t let that throw you off to the complexity of their sandwiches.

The menu only offers one vegan sandwich, appropriately named The Peoples’ Sandwich ($8), and one vegan salad, ‘Merican ($5). Don’t ignore the rest of the menu because it is fun to read about sandwiches like The Hammer and Pickle. The handcut fries and potato chips are other vegan options. I look forward to the addition of soups to their menu. When I first read about this place I heard someone said their life turned to gold after eating here. I thought it was a bold claim, but I now believe it was possible.

While their other sandwiches may be adaptable, there’s no need to even bother because The Peoples’ Sandwich has two pan fried tofu slabs amidst the best combination of condiments I’ve had in a while – a housemade hazelnut pesto, which they call soylent green, and marinated sweet peppadew peppers, all on a white wheat hoagie. The shop prides itself by providing local, organic, and housemade ingredients, which it should – because they are great. The tofu is pan fried with little seasoning. On my various visits the tofu has been cooked inconsistently, which I do not mind but it has been barely golden brown and a deep brown with a greasy crust. The winning ingredient here is the peppadew pepper which, unfortunately, are not house marinated, but canned. I will see past this one packaged item because of the way the sweet, balsamic heat of the pepper brings out the perfect pesto for a little dance, but not while Big Brother is watching. The flavors are great and will stay on your tongue for a while, which is good because of the $8 price tag. That is, unless you follow it with the side of house made chips. These potato chips have just the right amount of crunch and salt to round out the sweet, spicy, and acidity from the sandwich.

The only flaw of the sandwich is in the bread itself. It is a little too soft so the juices are absorbed quickly. I tried to save one half of my craft paper wrapped sandwich for later only to find a soggy mess of deliciousness. However, no matter how many times I go there’s nothing else I’d rather eat or even ask them to sub it for Dave’s Sin Dog which they have for other sandwiches.

Since living in Portland I’ve had a hard time finding French fries I love. The $3 Curly fries served here may be the best I’ve found. They cut fresh and include the skins when fried to perfection, then sprinkled with a bit of all-purpose seasoning. The Peoples’ Ketchup provided is a special blend of tomatoes and spices, including a hint of cinnamon or nutmeg. Unless you have a very healthy appetite I do not recommend ordering both the sandwich and a side of fries. First, the sandwich could be too much food and you won’t be able to fully enjoy the fresh fries and ketchup. And second, it may be too greasy, depending on just how pan-fried your tofu is that day. Try the sandwich and fries separately to ensure full enjoyment of all the care and attention paid to each item. Or split the three items with a friend for a nice priced meal.

Another great thing about The Peoples’ Sandwich is that it’s open until 3am on the weekends. I encourage you to stay and enjoy your food, assuming you can grab one of the few tables or bar seats. If not, spread out on the ample floor space and see if the Department of Sandwich kicks you out. Because, despite their tough appearance, they are really nice people. Besides, you’re paying $8 for a great sandwich, stay and enjoy The Department selected music and steel chairs, it’s probably raining outside anyway.

I had my first event photo shoot last night. The event was for a non profit that I’ve been volunteering for called Step It Up, Inc. It was held at Elephant’s Deli on 23rd and NW Burnside. 

Capturing the faces and event was a bit challenging because of the night time, indoor, low lighting. I think I was able to grab a few.

It’s funny how I once was a ham in front of the camera, now I’m a geek behind the camera. Love it!
