As you read this, I’m in New Orleans, celebrating the wedding of my dear friend Nicole. Turns out her middle name is Rhunette. Let’s see if I can work in a subtle inquiry about that one in between “congratulations” and “yes, I’d love some more champagne!”

In any case, this is my first trip away without a laptop since … wow. Since forever. I can’t decided if it will be more disorienting to be away without kids or away without connectivity.

Either way, if there are any last minute celeb births or wacky news stories ’bout kids with wild names, I’m missing them.

Still, I thought you might enjoy a few things:

Bewildertrix did a great sum-up of Old School Actresses. Why aren’t Claudette and Theda heard more often;

Also from the Wayback Machine, Namberry reviewed names from Dallas and Dynasty. Here’s the answer if you ever wondered who we had to thank for all of those girls called Jordan;

Laura Wattenberg asks if the conventional wisdom related to gender neutral names is over. Me, I say yes. While many names are still clearly gendered, I can imagine Kelly being reclaimed for boys, while names like Riley and Payton could remain in gender limbo indefinitely. It’s not a bad thing, necessarily;

Amy Ryan – she played Holly on The Office – has welcomed a daughter, Georgia Gracie;

I’ll be listening for unusual baby names over my vacation – and, of course, thinking about Tiana, the soon-to-be newest member of the Disney Princess Mafia, in the New Orleans-based story The Princess and the Frog.

Have a great week and, as always, thanks for reading!

10/17/2009 – NYLA Conference – Niagara Falls, NY

LISHost – another Blake Carver site (He does LIS News)

Retro future blog – shows predictions from the 1950s

Top 5 things for 2009 (from Read, Write Web):

1. Structured data – XML tags define and describe the data – not OS or device dependent. Tags are created in English. Most website today are made in XHTML. Data is in XML and style is in CSS. Such things as APA and MARC records are structured data – not really a new thing to librarians. Structured data makes it that the whole web could eventually be treated as a database.

2. Real Time Web – Running a search and finding results from last 5 seconds, etc. (Check out Google flu: http://www.google.org/flutrends/).

3. Personalization – Syracuse University just made “Mybrary” (https://library.syr.edu/mybrary/). APML – take your interests and code. (Attention Profiling Markup Language http://apml.areyoupayingattention.com/).

4. Augmented Reality – GPS, Direction you are facing, picture recognition – tells you what that place is. (check out layar website: http://layar.com/) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b64_16K2e08&feature=player_embedded ) A tour guide is analog augmented reality.

5. Internet of things – Identifying image (such as a bar code) and bring back information about the thing. iPhone has an application that you can pick up a book at Barnes and Noble and take a picture of the cover and find out the different prices of the book at competitors. (Explanation of “Internet of Things”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_of_Things)

As I write to you I am sitting on the porch of my hotel in Kisumu. This is the same hotel that in April of 2006, I shared a dinner with Bernard and talked about his dreams for the future. So much has changed since then. First, Bernard is no longer a boy but a man whose dreams are now within his grasp. Second, this is now my fourth time in Kenya and instead of it just being 3 months after my mother passed away it has been years. And it is only now that I am truly starting to understand how I ended up here in the first place.

I am here in Kisumu. Where it all began. Where 3 months after my mother died I came here to meet Bernard, the orphan that she sponsored. Not really knowing why but just following my instinct that when I got here things would fall into place. And they did to a certain extent. I met Bernard, learned about the project that my mother funded at OLPS-Neema that helped hundreds of women and out of this experience sparked the inspiration for Mama Hope. But what I have learned now is that this really is just the surface story. There is actually so much more.

A couple days ago, while driving with Bernard and Anastasia, the founder of OLPS-Neema, I asked her to tell me a little bit more about how my mother contacted her. She said one day in 2003 she just got a call from my mother and in true Stephanie Moore fashion, she just launched into her pitch. “Hi, I am Stephanie Moore. I am Bernard Olando’s sponsor. I want to help the young women in your community who are losing their parents to AIDS to become self sufficient? I saw a special about this on TV about how these women end up needing to take up prostitution to support their siblings and I want to help prevent this. You see I have a daughter and I hope that if anything happened to me she would be able to be self sufficient…and so on…and so on…..etc.” Once Anastasia could get a word in she told my mother that it was her dream “to start a program to teach these women how to run their own businesses.” Then she told my mom how much she needed to raise to start it. She said that my mother answered confidently, “Give me two weeks!” And so began a wonderful relationship where my mother would call Anastasia, ask her what she needed, then raise the money from her friends and send the funds to Kenya to help these young women.

Time went on and at the end of 2005 Anastasia got a very different call, “Anastasia, I have some bad news. I am very sick and I don’t think I will be around much longer. But I have a daughter and I promise that she will not abandon you and Bernard.” This was the very last time they spoke.

Anastasia told me that she had a beautiful picture of my mother who she said looked like a very young woman and so she thought for sure that the daughter must still be a young girl. She said that after that call she just prayed for the girl; that her whole community prayed that she would be alright. She told me that she wished to bring that girl into her home and care for her.

So four months later when I called her she thought it was a miracle. And a few weeks later when I showed up at her door in Kenya to meet Bernard she was so shocked to see a young woman who looked so similar to her picture of Stephanie Moore. She told me, “you know when you arrived and you were crying, and my whole staff was crying too. It was tears of joy because we knew that you had made it home.”

I want to point out that up until now I KNEW NONE OF THIS. My mother never told me of her promise to Anastasia. I didn’t go to Kenya to fulfill some destiny. I just saw it as an opportunity to meet Bernard and escape from my life in California and everything that reminded me of my terrible loss. Little did I know that what I was escaping to would eventually be the thing that healed my grief.

I remember now how I felt when I showed up; totally defeated and hopeless. The day before I met Anastasia and Bernard for the first time I was sitting on the porch of this very same hotel by myself. Cursing the universe. Asking why the hell I was in Kenya? How could my mother’s death ever have any meaning? How was I ever really to have faith again? I did not know that it would be renewed the very next day by meeting the people that my mother helped and inspiring me to create something so special in her absence.

So today, I am meeting with Anastasia to launch a garden in her community to honor another mother, named Rita Rose. Through Mama Hope a young girl named Mimi Rose contacted me who also lost her young beautiful mother to cancer and decided to fundraise in her memory. The Rita Rose Garden is going to help 100 women, (the very same women my mother helped, who are no longer girls but now mother’s themselves) have a sustainable source of nutrition for their children.

And in two weeks Bernard begins Medical Training College. We were so excited when he got the call with us on Saturday and learned that he was the only student accepted from his high school and that he also got a $1,000 scholarship. I know my mother is beaming with pride!

I have no idea why I woke up this morning to write this to you. I think I just wanted to share that the universe works in strange ways. People might leave us but it seems that love is something that can connect us beyond the boundaries of death in the most miraculous ways and that sometimes when you think you are completely lost you are just on another path home.

Some librarians may be given responsibility for implementing a modest records management program in their library or parent organization. Initially, the librarian, acting as a records manager may begin records management improvements with enthusiasm, but over time the librarian will begin to lose control of the organizationˇs records and the records management systems which were put in place will begin to regress. Often this is caused by a lack of adequate records management policies and procedures, or a situation where those procedures are not followed. This presentation will focus on:

The value of documenting policies and procedures

How to develop policies and procedures and make sure they are followed

How to keep policies up to date and relevant

Why do some websites look amazingly professional while others appear like they were designed in Microsoft Word? Much has changed since the early days of the internet. Whether you want to bring a more modern look to your website or customize a WordPress theme, every detail of the appearance of a page is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This “hands on” institute will give you experience with key concepts and software tools that will help you begin using CSS with your HTML.

Prerequisite: basic knowledge of HTML

This is a hands-on workshop. Registration is limited to 19 participants to enable each attendee access to a computer workstation.

About the Presenter:

Luke Charde, a freelance web developer and technology trainer, has been involved in the design of scores of websites since the early days of the web. He enjoys helping people learn to use the ever-changing world of technology for better organizational and personal effectiveness. Because of Luke’s background in the educational field, he is adept at communicating technological concepts in an understandable manner and providing the tools and resources to enable continued learning.

Registration Note:
Preregistration is required. Space is limited. Registration is completed when your payment arrives at NYLA. You will be contacted by NYLA only if the workshop is filled. This will be a hands-on workshop.

I’m short on time these days with Jocelyn in the hospital. Today is day 28 for her and she’s nearly ready to be moved to rehab. Sometime I’ll write about her saga, but for now, I’ll update Nyla’s stories.

Nyla is an amazingly excellent groundhog killer and proud of her self-appointed job of clearing our land of the little cute, but menacing creatures. She’s killed 8 in the past 2.5 weeks! There’s a colony about a 1/2 mile from home – across the big field. When she kills one out there, she proudly brings them home. She’s so cute, huffing and puffing her way down the hill with her mouth full of groundhog.

Nyla continues to enjoy her friend, Aurora, who is now 5 months old and around 300 pounds. She trusts Aurora completely and will lay flat out while Aurora sniffs her from head to tail. Aurora lets Nyla kiss her nose. Nyla loves her Aurora and lets Aurora lip her soft hair.

I love watching Nyla wind in and out of Aurora’s legs. Aurora is so careful to pay attention to Nyla’s comings and goings, too. My recent fun with the two of them was to put Nyla on Aurora’s back. Aurora enjoys having Nyla on her back, but Nyla prefers to ride the tractors and the quad. They’re very cute together and Serenity Equestrian Center is enjoying having such adorable and loving animals as Nyla and Aurora.

Sometime soon, I hope – I’ll post some pix of them together. ‘Til then, I hope this finds all of you well.

•	Barnes and Noble offers training for libraries on displays and merchandising.

•	10% off coupons at Barnes and Nobles for library fund raisers

•	Mount Laurel New Jersey Extreme Library Makeover – article with pictures: http://library.ucsc.edu/~machlis/feltonlibraryfriends/designarticles/bernstein.pdf

•	Marketing!!!! Change displays with the news.

•	How do we connect our value to the funding? Must market ourselves and our value.

•	Information Literacy to promote databases. Patrons tend not to use databases. They would rather not use it over Google.

•	Use the word journal instead of online databases – less intimidating – “Journal article” more used term in homework assignments.

•	How do we show our value to the public? What can we do to make public aware that the “free” services are not really free? And promote the value of the time we are saving them by being trained professionals who know how to search and locate things? Perception that the library is free – need to show the value or money the patron saved by using the library.

•	Devil Advocate’s Thought (not mine): Drop the Electronic databases for the public and just give access to the librarians. Would this save us money?

•	We as a profession need a better definition of what we do.

•	Need to do outreach – go out to other places and show what we have.

•	$2.5 million spent by NYS on the NOVEL database

•	No one wants to know how to find things – they just want it.

•	Biggest growing customer bases in Public Libraries according to a Pew survey is 18-25 year olds.

•	Do we have a link on our OPAC to DVDs? Is there anywhere that shows that we have DVDs and CDs other than the material designation? Patrons should be able to find those materials easily.

•	NYLA Organizational membership

•	Friends Group Organizational Membership

•	Votes are won every day at the Reference and Circ desks.

•	Target audience has to become not just our public but the administrators, etc.

•	Education is not the magic bullet

•	Must act like professionals for people to know we are professionals. Must constantly let people know that we are professionals.

•	People must repeat something 7 times in order to learn things.

•	With OPAC – what attracts your eye – what makes you go to a display? Make that work for the library. Gen X and Millenials have a different perception as to what design should look from Baby Boomers. Boomers want something that looks like a print copy but Gen X and Younger are used to web design. They do not like a lot of white space.

•	Send out a consistent message across the board.

•	There needs to be a consciousness to let people know the value of what we have just done for them. You need to be consistent in the way you put it out there. Constant repetition to your constituents.

•	Look at patron expectations over the past year and a half and anticipate what will be needed in the next 6 months.

•	Need to develop a pit bull mentality toward the budgets in NY.

•	Part of our job as librarians is lobbying.

•	Need to ask for release time to go lobby in Albany.

•	Libraries getting 11% below what they are suppose to be getting. CCDA money cut by 8%.

•NYLA just contracted with NYSUT for lobbying.

Library Advocates Need to Act Now

State budget negotiations are near completion and a final deal could be reached by this weekend. Library Advocates need to remind their Legislators and the Governor to restore the proposed $18 million or 18% cut in Library Aid.

Please go to our Online Advocacy Center at <www.nyla.org> and send a fax/email to your legislators to remind them not to forget about their commitments to restore Library Aid. If these cuts go through, Library Aid will be reduced to $80.5 million a level not seen since 1993.

Library usage has skyrocketed across the state and nation. Now is not the time to cut public services that are in the greatest demand and needed the most.

Libraries have already been cut twice last year, we have contributed our share, now it is time for others to do their part to solve the state’s budget deficit.

Please forward this message to your friends, colleagues, trustees, etc. We need to send at least 5,000 messages over the next few days.

Visit www.nyla.org and click on Contact Your Elected Officials Button. Thanks for your support.

State Budget negotiations are ramping up as both the Assembly and the Senate prepare to release their budget proposals by early next week. Despite the state receiving approximately $24.6 billion in federal stimulus funds, including $2.4 billion for school aid over the next two years, Library Aid funding remains in jeopardy.

Next Tuesday, March 10, is Library Lobby Day, and I urge the library community to make every effort to participate so we can have a strong showing in Albany that will demonstrate to public policymakers the urgent need to restore the proposed $18 million or 18% cut in Library Aid that will impact all types of libraries, public, school and college.

Full details about Pre-Lobby Day, Monday, March 9, and Library Lobby Day, Tuesday, March 10, can be found on NYLA’s website. If you are interested in attending, contact your regional coordinator; a list can be found on NYLA’s Lobby Day page.

In addition, I invite you to view a video of NYLA’s Executive Director’s appearance on Senator Liz Krueger’s (D-Manhattan) cable show and NYLA’s testimony before the Joint Legislative Budget Hearing. These links are found on NYLA’s website under “Headlines.” Also found on the NYLA website are links to information about the federal stimulus package and how it impacts libraries and how libraries can apply for funding from the state.

I look forward to seeing you in Albany next week.

Looking for a shoe to boost you right up? This one is perfect. The Marriah, by N.Y.L.A. is so fabulous in its design, you’ll have to show it off. I like the light beige suede with the dark chocolate brown & gold plated buckle. It’s the perfect color combination! I also like the wooden heel and the 1/2″ sole. The perfect shoe to make you a little taller.

How to wear:

Wear with a fitted dress, bare legs and pretty polished toes

Wear with short shorts, bare legs a pretty blouse and some jewelry
