I like clothes more than shoes. But when I come across footwear that’s fantastically spellbinding, I’m quick to want.

When it comes to what you wear, there shouldn’t be any borders; clothes, shoes or otherwise. Screw the conservative society! Many of the greatest fashion innovators – with the exception of US Vogue’s Anna Wintour, and Vogue Paris’s Carine Roitfeld – made their mark in the world by being themselves, no matter how idiosyncratic it seemed. And that’s where London-based cobbler Chau Har Lee fits into my life.

Chau Har Lee is a 29-year-old shoe designer who obtained her long-winded education at UK’s most prestigious: Cordwainer College (London College of Fashion), Royal College of Art and Camberwell College of Art. She’s the recipient of multiple awards including the 2009 Manolo Blahnik prize and International Talent Support competition, she’s been featured in fashion magazines such as British Vogue, Nylon and i-D, and she’s worked with fashion powerhouses Burberry and Nicole Farhi early in her career. A fan for pushing the “shoe envelope,” Ms. Har used  materials such as stainless steel, walnut wood, acrylic and leather to create architectural shoes you could envision completing Maison Martin Margiela’s runway collection.

There’s no word as to when we’ll be able to get our hands on a pair, but she says she’s currently working on her 2010 collection in her East London studio.

Usado por los romanos, que lo llamaban bursa, en el siglo I a. de C., era una simple bolsa. Con el paso del tiempo fue convirtida en un accesorio exclusivamente femenino. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando la mujer comenzó a incorporarse al mundo laboral, se pusieron de moda las bandoleras para tener libres las mano.

BLUSA

En el siglo XV a. de C. las mujeres ya utilizaban blusas ceñidas con un cinturón. Durante varios siglos fue la prenda de las campesinas, y en este siglo se relevó por otra más ligera para acompañar a los primeros trajes femeninos. La aparición de las blusas escotadas, en 1913, hizo que se llamasen camisas de neumonía.

CHAQUETA

 Nació en el siglo XVIII en Francia como una prenda para montar a caballo, de ahí la raja situada en la espalda. En 1860, Napoleón III la hizo más sobria, y en los años cincuenta los modistos la liberaron de la rigidez de su corte inicial.

FALDA

La primera falda, de piel, pareció hace ya 600.000 años y desde entonces esta prenda nunca ha abandonado a la mujer. En el año 1915 la moda enseñó los tobillos femeninos, pero la auténtica revolución llegó en 1965 gracias a Mary Quant, con el lanzamiento de la minifalda. 

FOULARD

 Con una finalidad función higiénica en sus orígenes, servía también para protegerse del frío. Durante el Imperio Bizantino alcanzó una finalidad estética y eran lucidos sobre el hombro o el brazo izquierdo. Durante la Edad Media, su color reflejaba la condición social de quien lo llevaba. En la época del Renacimiento las italianas lo utilizaban como un objeto exclusivamente ornamental y comenzaron a ser muy estimados los que estaban confeccionados en seda.

MEDIAS

Las mujeres las usan desde el siglo XVI. Eran de lana o seda hasta la invención del nylon, en 1939. En 1968 llegó un duro rival con los leotardos confeccionados en nuevos materiales, como lycra y poliamida. 

PANTALÓN

 Su nombre se le atribuye a San Pantaleón, médico, mártir del siglo IV y patrón de Venecia. Ya hace 4.000 años los nómadas de Centroeuropa llevaban bombachos atados a la cintura. Pero el pantalón, tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día, apareció en 1830. Y en 1860 se creo el vaquero o jean por el bávaro emigrado Levi Strauss, en San Francisco, durante la fiebre del oro. Coco Chanel lo introdujo como prenda también para las mujeres, antes algo casi impensable. 

SUJETADOR

 Las primeras en utilizarlo fueron las mujeres cretenses unos 1.700 años a. de C. Pero el sujetador, tal y como lo conocemos hoy, es reciente; nació en 1914 pero su uso se generalizó en los años cincuenta. Después, con la influencia del movimiento beatnik y la moda de lo natural, tuvo cierto retroceso, recuperado en los últimos años, para convertirse convertido en la estrella de la lencería femenina. Últimamente ha habido innovaciones con de esta prenda como el Wonderbra. 

TRAJE DE CHAQUETA

 Inventado por un sastre inglés en París en 1881 y en 1914 se convirtió en el uniforme urbano de las mujeres. En 1954 Coco Chanel creó un modelo idóneo para todas las situaciones, con lo que se convirtió en la versión masculina.

So I’m sick. Nothing awful; not The Swine, certainly. Just a very bad cold. Light fever. The sort of thing which makes you miserable, but which you can’t in good conscience complain too loudly about. I’m at my parents’ house, though, so good conscience be damned, I want my mom to make me soup and my dad to buy me Cinema du Look dvds (more about that later.) I’m complaining as loudly as I possibly can.

What else am I doing with my time? Drinking tea, mostly, and looking at magazines. Here’s my work area. To make it more aesthetically pleasing for the photograph, I cleared away the kleenexes:

Looking at magazines and lusting over objects I can’t afford, I should add. The Melissa shoes by Vivienne Westwood. Expensive pink headphones. You know. Why headphones? Well, always headphones, really, but especially because, to cheer me up and hopefully cure me, my dad brought me a dvd of Diva, that most excellent film about a French kid who illegally records his favorite opera star:

There’s some police cover-ups and car chases in there, too, and a millionaire who lives in a lighthouse. It’s pretty much my favorite kind of film. Anyway, this kid pours his small resources into his music equipment: his tape players, his headphones, his recording devices. Now I want headphones. Or that baguette Gorodish was buttering. Geez.

So, that’s how I’ve been coping with my illness, mostly. Looking through fashion magazines, watching movies. Oh, and enjoying the lush booklets which fall out of my newspaper, encouraging me to consider this or that film in all categories when I do my Oscar voting:

Sure thing, Disney – Pixar. I’ll consider your film when I go in to cast my Oscar ballot. When you guys are sitting nervously in the lobby pulling napkins apart, I’ll trot in and give you a thumbs-up, just to raise your spirits. You won’t be able to miss me: I’ll be wearing my Westwood Mary Janes, rocking out to some tunes on my brand-new headphones.

Da hab ich mal wieder was schönes geschossen: ein neues Wilderness Equipment Dart I. Seit langem war ich schon auf das Wechsel Pathfinder scharf, konnte mich zu einem Kauf aber nicht aufraffen und war dann sehr überrascht ein offensichtlich baugleiches Zelt von WE zu finden. Beide Zelte gleichen sich extrem und sogar das Footprint von Wechsel scheint zu passen. Meine Ausführung des Dart entspräche in etwa der ZG-Version des Pathfinders, welchers sich durch hochwertigere Materialien und ein geringeres Gewicht gegenüber der Standardversion auszeichnet.
Ich hab also nicht lang überlegt, sondern gleich gekauft – für 80€, einfach unglaublich!

Nach der Lieferung des Zeltes war ich ob einiger Details freudig überrascht: Das Zelt wird in den Packsack hineingelegt(!), dann wird der Packsack zugezogen und fertig. Nicht leicht zu beschreiben, aber gut gelöst. Ein nass eingepacktes Zelt sollte aufgrund des Packsackmaterials (bestehend aus dem Bodenmaterial des IZ’es; Nähte nicht getaped) das übrige Gepäck nicht durchnässen. Auch der Gestängebeutel gefällt mir gut, er wird mittels Klett verschlossen und der Heringssack ist bereits angenäht. In diesen passen Heringe bis ca. 19cm Länge.

4 hochwertige Heringe wurden mitgeliefert – sehr mager. Zum kompletten Abspannen werden 12 Stück benötigt (6 Ecken / 4 Leinen / 2 an den Längsseiten), wobei das Dart an sich freistehend ist. Mit an Bord sind zwei Reparaturhülsen, zwei Ersatzzipper und eine Ersatzsteckschnalle. Zum Abdichten liegen noch 42,5g SilNet und eine Spritze bei.

Für ein 1 Personenzelt ist das Dart schon relativ schwer geraten, hier gibt es einfach leichtere auf dem Markt. Wenn ich zumal an mein Vaude Deneb denke, welches auch nur auf 2500 Gramm kommt, in dem man aber zu zweit mit viel Gepäck herrlich viel Platz hat und welches eine tolle Sitzhöhe über einen sehr großen Bereich bietet, dann komme ich schon ins Grübeln. Gut, mich als Radler stören 500 Gramm mehr oder weniger nicht, mir kommt es auf das Packmaß an und da ist das Dart nunmal klasse. Das Deneb allerdings auch.

Der Aufbau:

Die in den Packsack eingenähte und nur auf englisch abgedruckte Anleitung ist zwar ordentlich geschrieben, für einen Zeltneuling/Englischnichtversteher wären Bilder & ein zusätzlich deutscher Text jedoch nicht verkehrt.
Der Aufbau geht spielend leicht von der Hand. Insgesamt sind drei Gestänge vorhanden, zwei haben eine identische Länge, das dritte ist kürzer. Zuerst flutschen die beiden langen Gestänge sehr einfach durch die Kanäle des Innenzeltes und das IZ wird aufgerichtet. Nun kommt der kürzere Querbogen und wenn dieser gespannt wird, kann man in warmen und trockenen Nächten bereits ohne Außenzelt übernachten. Ist das Wetter schlechter, spannt man noch das gut sitzende AZ drüber und spannt alles ab. Apropo abspannen: die Leinen sind via Elastikstück am AZ angebracht, das stelle ich mir materialschonender als eine starre Verbindung vor. Die Seilspanner sind sehr feine, wie man sie auch bei Hilleberg findet.Beim ersten Aufbau haben sich die Gestängebögen nur schwer in die Ösen einfädeln lassen, ich musste schon etwas Kraft dafür anwenden – das geht mittlerweile zumindest etwas einfacher. Ein schneller aufzubauendes Zelt hatte ich bislang noch nicht.Nachteilig werden die meisten Leute den Aufbauablauf bewerten: das IZ wird zuerst aufgebaut. Mich stört das nicht sonderlich und ich freue mich vielmehr darüber das AZ bei gutem Wetter einfach wegzulassen. Für Leichtleute kann das AZ auch solo aufgebaut werden!

Komfort:

Das Zelt bietet keine Sitzhöhe und das ist vielleicht sein größter Nachteil. Ich (183cm) kann mich jedoch leicht gebückt hinsetzen und auch ordentlich umziehen etc. Der Innenraum ist für eine Person ordentlich groß, wenngleich die Wand am Kopf- oder Fußende (je nachdem wie herum man liegt) recht flach verläuft. Fürs große (Fahrrad-)Gepäck ist die Apsis viel zu klein, allerdings ist das IZ groß genug, um den Rest mit ins Innere zu nehmen – dann freilich wird es gut eng. Für den Komfort gibt es eine Schlaufe und eine Tasche – naja, immerhin. Das Anbringen einer Wäscheleine ist somit jedoch nicht möglich, aufgrund der Zeltgröße wäre dies allerdings auch weniger praktisch.

In der Praxis:

Da das IZ zuerst aufgebaut werden muss, wird es im Regen problematisch, da es nass werden wird. Die Erfahrung musste ich schon bei meinem Northland Quito machen, fand das bei den erlebten Regenfällen allerdings auch nicht so tragisch. Wenn es richtig und durchgehend schüttet hat man natürlich ein Problem. Immerhin ist das IZ wirklich rasch aufgebaut… Wo wir gerade schon beim Regen sind: wenn die Apsis komplett geöffnet wird, wird es ins Innenzelt regnen, das ist nicht fein.
Belüftet wird das Zelt über drei, allerdings nur von außen per Klett und komplett zu schließende Lüfter. Gut, den Lüfter an der Türseite kann man auch direkt aus dem Zelt heraus bedienen.

Als für mich sehr positiv empfinde ich, dass das Zelt komplett freistehend ist, es kann also auch dort aufgebaut werden, wo sich das Einschlagen von Heringen als schwierig erweist oder nicht möglich ist. Wenn ich an mein Deneb denke, bei dem ich mindestens 8 Heringe sauber setzen muss damit es überhaupt steht, empfinde ich das schon als einen sehr großen Vorteil, zumal in Sommernächten, in denen ich auf das Abspannen häufig verzichte.Von Nachteil ist die sehr luftige Bauweise des Innenzeltes, welches praktisch komplett aus Moskitonetz bestent. Bei Wind zieht es ganz gut hinein. Wechsel war hier gescheiter und hat das Innenzelt besser gegen Wind geschützt. Die Firma WE ist allerdings in Australien ansässig und so ist die Wahl das Zelt möglichst lufitg zu gestalten nachvollziehbar.

Mein Fazit

Mit dem WE Dart I erhält man ein sehr solides 1-Personen Zelt, welches aus sehr hochwertigen Materialien gefertigt, sehr gut verarbeitet ist und schöne Detaillösungen besitzt. Der Aufbau (nur IZ, nur AZ, beide zusammen) ist sehr variabel, geht sehr einfach und schnell. Da das Zelt zudem freistehend ist und ein süßes Packmaß besitzt, musste ich mich direkt verlieben.
Weniger gut sind der nicht regensichere Eingang und die sehr geringe Sitzhöhe.

Insgesamt ist das Zelt einen Kauf wert – für eine recht spezielle Zielgruppe. Dringend empfehlen möchte ich aber eine Probenacht in diesem oder einem ähnlich großen Zelt. Nicht jedem behagt das Nächtigen in einer Dackelgarage, welches in erster Linie als reines Nachtlager gedacht ist. Nach ein paar Nächten habe ich mich wieder für den Verkauf entschieden, da es mir persönlich zu eng wurde und es für mein Radgepäck auch kaum Platz bot. Puristen und genügsame Sololeutchens werden mit dem Zelt sicher glücklich, wenn sie das vergleichbar hohe Gewicht nicht stört.

Und mein Prädikat? Empfehlensewert plus.

Copped them at Goods for an awesome price.  Everyone was trying to get lame-ass SB’s just to have the boxes in their closet but I keep it on the deal on the daily, yo.

Also, as a bonus, the stores didn’t open until 11 am so no camping out.  Suck it BEST BUY.

I’m in Nancy, (north of Paris), jetlagged and therefore awake way too early, passing the time goofing off on my mom’s laptop. We are staying at my uncle’s house…he has pet roly-polies in the compost. He claims they don’t like oranges.

Roly-Poly= “a colloquial name for isopod crustaceans of the family Armadillidiidae”.

Similar to armadillos and roly-polies, I have the ability to make myself tiny and invisible, a skill that comes in handy for discrete people-watching.

I couldn’t resist buying Dazed & Confused for the plane ride…Lily Cole on the cover and an article on “the future of fashion and film” made this issue irresistible. I also wanted to get Nylon, but there wasn’t a single place that sold them in the SFO international terminal.

Enjoyed a cappucino and a fraise tagada. People don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here, since its an American holiday, but we are going to have a make-up Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday, a la francaise.

Royal College of Art graduate and former employee of Alberta Ferretti, Alexander Mcqueen and Aganovich, Maaike Mekking, has been making her name for herself. Over the past few years, she has been getting press coverage from The Guardian, Style magazine and I-D, as well as having her shows featured in a variety of publications from Grazia to Nylon, and labels stocked in stores in London, Paris and Rome.

What it is: Covergirl Lashblast Length mascara ($7.59)

What it’s supposed to do: “Our new Elasta-Nylon formula flexes without flaking, giving you extreme, notice-me lashes all day long. Our longest brush ever gives you an 80% longer lash look.” [via Covergirl.com]

What it actually does: Umm… in a word, more or less nothing. One coat was honestly hardly noticeable, in terms of length, volume, and curl. Here, I’ll let you judge for yourself:

Alright, so the mascara didn’t do nothing, but it’s a pretty darn subtle difference – too subtle if you’ve got lashes as wimpy as mine. It provided minor curl, length (but not nearly 80% – I would give it maybe 30%, and that’s being generous), and almost no volume. However, what little it did provide lasted through the day with no smudging or flaking, hooray! Lashblast definitely performed best in the “length” category, so at least Covergirl isn’t guilty of false advertisement.

Pros: Doesn’t smudge or flake, lasts all day, doesn’t clump when layered

Cons: Provides very minor length, curl, and volume.

Overall: 2/5. I would recommend this only to someone who has great lashes to begin with and just wants a little extra boost – it won’t do much for the rest of us.
