Dia 04 de novembro de 2008 foi dia de eleições nos EUA e o democrata Barack Obama foi eleito presidente. Ele derrotou o senador republicano John McCain. Vale muito a pena assistir no You Tube o discurso dele em Chicago após a vitória. É emocionante (chorei assistindo) pelo discurso em si e também pelo fato de estarmos testemunhando um momento histórico.

Amei todo o discurso, especialmente quando ele homenageia a esposa, Michelle Obama: “And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation’s next first lady Michelle Obama.”

E muito fofo que ele prometeu um cachorrinho para as filhas caso ganhasse as eleições: “Sasha and Malia I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the new White House.”

I am relieved and excited and happy that Mr Obama has been elected as President. He, and his election, gives me hope. I just watched his speech on the BBC website. It was excellent and very moving in itself, but what I found even more affecting were the expressions of hope, joy and expectation on the faces of people in the crowd. I can’t imagine how Obama must be feeling today, to know that so many people place so much hope in him and his administration. He has so much promise to live up to.

Not to forget Mr McCain, who made a very gracious speech following his defeat and who, despite some blunders and Sarah Palin (argh!) comes across as being a very decent man.

There isn’t really anything I can say about the election and its results that hasn’t been said already, but I didn’t think I could let today go by without saying something to mark the occasion. It really has been an historic day. Congratulations, America.

“Change has come to America”, thus ran Obama acceptance speech on the eve of his historic victory. And what a victory that was really! The election was no more a mystery ridden one as far as the result was concerned and as if the Americans whole heartedly wanted to hear CNN or other hundreds of news channels say “Obama Wins”, the voter turn out was at a whopping record 90%, probably the biggest turnout since women got voting rights.

Obama speech began just before the clock heralded the new era on the night of the historic day. Obama Presidential acceptance speech began with a touching declaration in which he said that America was not a collection of individuals, not a collection of families and groups but it belonged all those who believed that the dream of founders of America was still alive in this time. It never belonged to either the red states or the blue states, and instead, it is and always will the United States of America.

Obama victory speech was a real touching moment for millions of Americans that voted in this election. The Obama speech read “It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.”

Obama wins not just votes, not even the hearts of his voters but one and all that make the great nation that is America. Obama’s victory speech at grant park was totally amazing. Obama’s victory speech mostly reflected on the people that helped him which includes family, friends, colleagues and mostly supporters. This is not a speech for the Americans alone it was a spech to the whole world at large.

The speech was 45 minutes of summed up cooperation from young people and the elderly too, the spirit exhibited during this election was a first in the history of the U.S

This certainly was a momentous occassion, as history was in the making.

Obama speaks to America like a President. His theme is not just change, it is a new unity. As a black man, he helps heal the past as well as forge the future. This really was history tonight. To win so many white voices, and bring together so many minorities, and use the unifying language that leaves the toxins of race and partisanship behind: This was the moment America stopped being afraid.

This was the America we have missed and have found again. Pay tribute to hope.
