La commozione, le emozioni ancora vivide legate al ricordo delle vittime della strage di Mumbai che esattamente un anno fa provoco’ la morte di oltre 170 persone, hanno oggi presto lasciato il posto alle polemiche e alle proteste. L’emozione scaturita dalla parata della polizia che ha aperto la giornata di manifestazioni, seguita da incontri di preghiera interconfessionali e ricordo dei caduti, ha lasciato il posto a numerose polemiche e proteste che hanno riguardato la gente comune, scesa in piazza per partecipare a questo giorno di commemorazioni, ma anche la classe politica. Molte delle famiglie delle vittime degli attentati dello scorso 26 novembre lamentano di non aver ancora ricevuto le somme stanziate a titolo di risarcimento dal Ministero dell’Interno. Secondo fonti ufficiali, dei 107 aventi diritto solo 50 sarebbero stati esaminati e avrebbero ottenuto quanto loro spettante.
Il Ministero dell’Interno indiano ha stanziato 3 lakh (circa seimila euro) di risarcimento per ciascuna delle famiglie delle vittime e 50000 rupie (circa mille euro) per ciascuno dei feriti.
E le questioni relative al risarcimento hanno scatenato le discussioni anche all’interno del parlamento, soprattutto tra il leader dell’opposizione, L K Advani, e il Ministro delle Finanze, Pranab Mukherjee arrivando alla rissa fra i parlamentari.
Advani ha accusato il governo di compiere ”passi lenti” nel dare sollievo e il giusto risarcimento alle famiglie delle vittime, provocando l’ira del Ministro delle Finanze che ha vigorosamente affermato che il partito de BJP (che sta all’opposizione in India) in questo modo strumentalizza la tragedia del 26 novembre scorso per fini politici.
Le manifestazioni di oggi sono state anche segnate dalle proteste per la scarsa sicurezza che avvertono i cittadini, oggi come l’anno scorso. Un ex ufficiale di polizia di Mumbai, Hasan Gafoor, in una intervista ad un settimanale indiano, ha detto che una intera sezione di agenti di polizia si rifiuto’ di recarsi sul luogo degli attentati. Sono poi ancora veementi le polemiche sui ritardi sia dell’intervento della polizia, ma soprattutto di quello delle teste di cuoio, arrivati con oltre 10 ore di ritardo. Molti indiani sono spaventati che un simile attacco possa nuovamente ripetersi in futuro, timore avvalorato da dichiarazioni dei vertici militari e della polizia. Il popolo di Mumbai, insieme anche a tanta altra gente giunta da ogni parte del paese, si e’ riunito dinanzi al Gate of India, il monumento simbolo della citta’ che si trova a pochi passi dall’Hotel Taj )e nei pressi del quale approdo’ il barchino dei dieci assalitori), pregando, piangendo e rendendo omaggio ai caduti. Ma tra loro anche la rabbia e’ apparsa palpabile. ”Vogliamo che Kasab sia impiccato” hanno urlato in molti, invocando cosi’ una punizione esemplare per l’unico terrorista pachistano catturato vivo, al momento sotto processo. ”Proteggono i ministri, i politici, ma alla nostra sicurezza chi ci pensa?” ha detto un altro cittadino. E ci sono state polemiche anche contro la polizia, i cui membri, secondo la popolazione, sono scarsamente addestrati e inidonei a gestire le emergenze. Polemiche anche contro la marcia organizzata dalla polizia, accusata di strumentalizzare l’anniversario per fare bella mostra del suo moderno armamentario. Il tutto, ottenuto grazie ad un nuovo stanziamento per la sicurezza annunciato dal ministro degli interni dello stato del Maharashtra, R.R. Patil. Lo stesso che era in carica durante gli attentati e che si dimise subito dopo, per poi riprendere la sua carica con la nuova amministrazione.

Anche film, libri, mostre d’arte e fumetti nel primo anniversario degli attentati di Mumbai. Gia’ poche ore dopo la liberazione degli ostaggi nel Taj Mahal hotel da parte delle teste di cuoio indiane, un famoso regista di Bollywood, Gopal Varma, fece un sopralluogo nell’albergo, accompagnato dal primo ministro di allora dello stato, per riprendere le location per un film sugli attentati. La cosa indigno’ gli indiani tanto da convincere il primo ministro del Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmuk, a dimettersi e a Varma di abbandonare l’idea del film. Cosa che pero’ non e’ avvenuto per altri registi. Una serie di film sono in uscita in India, tutti coll’unico filo conduttore del sentimento di unita’ del paese, della vittoria sui terroristi pachistani, con esplosioni, sangue e corpi straziati in bella vista. Il richiamo di Bollywood non poteva non essere raccolto dagli altri media che stanno avendo sempre piu’ successo nel paese. E’ ad esempio il caso di ”Operation Mumbai”, un gioco on line nel quale il giocatore deve uccidere, in un tempo determinato, i terroristi. Libri e opere d’arte sono in esplosione a Mumbai e in altre citta’ indiane, mentre e’ stato da poco diffuso anche un fumetto, intitolato ‘26/11′, nel quale 15 terroristi entrano via mare ed un super eroe, Doga, viene preso dai terroristi e poi liberato dalle forze speciali della polizia. In un altro fumetto, ‘Halla Bol’, il super eroe Nagraj entra nello stato vicino ‘Ghuspetistaan’ per distruggere i campi terroristi dopo che questi hanno attaccato i luoghi di Mumbai, che nel fumetto conservano i loro nomi originali. Entrambi i fumetti, venduti a poco meno di un euro, sono andati a ruba ed hanno esaurito le copie stampate, tanto che gli editori stanno pensando di metterli a disposizione su internet o attraverso i cellulari.

Fu un terrorista pachistano ad effettuare, dalla cella di massima sicurezza del carcere pachistano di Hyderabad nel quale era rinchiuso, la telefonata al presidente pachistano Zardari, spacciandosi per il ministro degli esteri indiano Mukherjee, all’indomani degli attacchi di Mumbai, facendo temere per qualche ora lo scoppio della quarta guerra fra i due paesi (se si esclude quella non dichiarata del 1998). Lo riferisce oggi il quotidiano pachistano Dawn. Omar Saeed Sheikh, ritenuto uno dei piu’ importanti terroristi pachistani, in carcere tra l’altro per il rapimento e l’omicidio del giornalista del Wall Street Journal Daniel Pearl, secondo il giornale pachistano, in carcere, nonostante si trovasse in isolamento, riusciva a ricevere telefonate dalla moglie su un cellulare che aveva nascosto. La scheda Sim era una scheda inglese, cosa che avvalora quanto ha scritto nella sua biografia l’ex presidente Pervez Musharraf, secondo il quale Saeed era un servizio del MI6, il servizio segreto inglese. Sul quel telefono cellulare, il terrorista fu informato dalla moglie dei fatti di Mumbai, ricevendo continui aggiornamenti. Venerdi’ 28 novembre, a due giorni dall’inizio degli attacchi terroristici a Mumbai, nelle stesse ore in cui i gruppi speciali indiani liberavano gli ultimi ostaggi negli alberghi della citta’, nella residenza ufficiale del presidente pachistano Asif Ali Zardari squillo’ il telefono riservato: dall’altra parte Saeed, spacciandosi per il ministro degli esteri indiano, Pranab Mukherjee, accusava il Pakistan di aver aiutato i terroristi, annunciando di star spostando le truppe verso il confine pachistano e ingiungendo a Islamabad di prendere provvedimenti contro i fondamentalisti islamici. Zardari richiamo’ a Islamabad il primo ministro Yusuf Raza Gilani che era a Lahore, un aereo militare parti’ alla volta di New Delhi per riportare a casa il ministro degli esteri Shah Mahmud Qureshi che sarebbe dovuto ritornare il giorno dopo con un volo di linea. Il capo di stato maggiore dell’esercito viene avvisato di mettere in stato di massima allerta le truppe, e di cominciare a spostare battaglioni dal confine afghano a quello indiano. Furono 24 ore di intense telefonate, di contatti diplomatici tra Islamabad, New Delhi e Washington. Lo stesso pseudo ministro degli esteri indiano autore del falso telefonico con Zardari avrebbe provato a chiamare anche il segretario di stato americano Condoleezza Rice, ma i servizi americani non hanno passato la telefonata. La Rice invece parlo’ con Zardari e poi con Mukherjee, che smenti’. Saed e’ stato trasferito nel carcere di Lahore e il responsabile del carcere di Hyderabad, dopo che una perquisizione approfondita ha fatto rinvenire telefoni cellulari e schede nella cella di Saed, e’ stato trasferito.

E’ cominciata con una parata della polizia di Mumbai la giornata di manifestazioni in occasioni del primo anniversario degli attentati di Mumbai che il 26 novembre dell’anno scorso videro 10 terroristi pachistani tenere in ostaggio per oltre 60 ore la capitale economica dell’India facendo oltre 170 vittime. La polizia dell’ex Mumbai, insieme ai reparti speciali e con mezzi di assalto, ha sfilato da Nariman point, nei pressi del Gate of India dinanzi all’hotel Taj che fu preso dagli assalitori, fino a Chowpatty, la spiaggia piu’ famosa di Mumbai. Nella parata, anche dimostrazioni di azioni antiterroristiche da parte del Force One, il corpo speciale della polizia che mise fine all’assedio. Molta gente ha assistito alla parata e ha visitato i luoghi simbolo dell’assedio, come il Leopold Cafe, il Cama Hospital, l’hotel Oberoi Trident, la stazione ferroviaria Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, l’hotel Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, e la Nariman House. La parata della polizia e’ solo la prima di una serie di manifestazioni che commemorano il primo anniversario degli attentati di Mumbai. Il ministro degli interni indiano Palanippam Chidambaran inaugurera’ un memoriale per le vittime della polizia alla sede centrale degli agenti di Mumbai, mentre una manifestazione religiosa e’ prevista al Gato of India, il monumento dinanzi al Taj Mahal Hotel. Anche il centro ebraico, che fu assaltato dagli attentatori, cosi’ come gli altri luoghi degli attentati, sara’ al centro di manifestazioni. Da stamattina sono stati illuminati diversi lumini sulle finestre del centro e deposti fiori. Una cerimonia religiosa e’ prevista in giornata. Altri cortei e marce silenziose sono annunciate in ogni parte di Mumbai e anche nelle altre grandi citta’ indiane, soprattutto come segno di protesta al terrorismo. Ma la ricorrenza non e’ scevra da polemiche. Anche il primo ministro dello stato di allora, Vilasrao Deshmuk, si dimise, perche’ si reco’ al Taj insieme ad un regista. Oggi, Deshmuk e’ ministro dell’industria nel governo centrale e R.R. Patil e’ di nuovo ministro degli interni del Maharashtra.

Mumbai. Exactly a year back, ten terrorists came to Mumbai to kill people and subsequently to get killed in the process, so that they were rewarded virgins in the heaven after they died. Nine of them (assuming the official count to be true) were killed while one, called Ajmal Amir Kasab, was captured alive. While we know (to the extent government and media wants us to know) how Kasab has been doing in the last one year, have we ever wondered what happened to those nine killed?

Our correspondent immediately took up the assignment and did a GODgle search (a search engine especially made for heaven by dead Google engineers) to find about the nine terrorists, but he couldn’t get any result. Since no Microsoft employees were involved in making of Godgle, our correspondent was dead sure that it was not some bug.

After filing an RTI in the office of MCH (Municipal Corporation of Heaven), our correspondent received the shocking revelation that none of those nine killed terrorists actually reached the heaven. They didn’t even get a waiting list, in fact they were straightway sent to the hell.

Clearly it was a Breaking News. So our correspondent decided to travel to hell to interview some of the dead terrorists. Since the diplomatic relations between Hell and Heaven are on rocks due to the ongoing and historical enmity between Satan and God, our correspondent was denied visa to go to hell. But after a lot of deliberations and requests, finally permission for a telephonic interview with one of the terrorists was allowed.

The nine dead terrorists apparently authorized a certain Imran Babar to speak on their behalf to Fake News. Followings are the highlights of the Fake News interview with the dead terrorist:

Fake News (FN): Thanks for speaking to us Imran. How are you feeling?

Imran Babar (IB): O benchod! Aag laga ke rakhi hai pichhwade mein ek saal se inhone, aur kaisa feel karunga? (My ass has been on fire since last one year, what am I supposed to feel?)

FN: Sorry for your ass Imran, but it must have been a shocker to find yourself in the hell after being promised virgins in the heaven?

IB: abbey jale pe namak mat chhidak! (abbey, don’t add injury to my insult!) Virgins? My ass! I’m getting fucked in my ass daily by the Satan here.

FN: Oh! Sorry again for your ass Imran, but did you seriously have no idea, when you were alive, that you could actually end up in such a situation?

IB: How was I supposed to know then? I could make bombs, use Google Maps and operate Kalashnikovs, but that doesn’t mean I knew everything. I depended upon my commanders (in LET) for all the instructions and knowledge. I blindly trusted them on these matters.

FN: Do you feel cheated by them?

IB: There is nothing to tell. We are being tortured like hell. Well, what more do you expect in hell?

IB: What the hell! Then where are all the virgins?

FN: You still believe in this infidel vs. faithful talk?

IB: Well, the Satan talks about them before pounding my ass. Sometimes he sounds just like my earlier commanders in Lashkar-e-Taiba. But the good thing is that he doesn’t promise me any good days ahead like those assholes in Lashkar.

FN: One of your friends, Kasab, has been caught alive. Do you guys know it?

IB: Of course we know it. When we found him missing in the hell, we were pretty sure he was alive, as there is no way he could have gone to the heaven. We heard he’s been provided biryani and books. Lucky bastard! Man, this sucks! Here I’m getting ass-fucked by Satan and there he is enjoying all the hospitality of Indians. I’m sure the future terrorists will not listen to the assholes of Lashkar and won’t kill themselves. It’s far better to be alive.

Ad un anno dagli attacchi che sconvolsero Mumbai e l’India tutta, che il 26 novembre del 2008 tennero in ostaggio di dieci giovani terroristi pachistani la metropoli capitale economica dell’India, si chiudera’ dopodomani la fase istruttoria del processo a carico dell’unico terrorista sopravvissuto. Ma restano molte incertezze, tanti buchi e molte ombre.
Ajmal Kasab, l’unico terrorista sopravvissuto, dall’8 maggio scorso siede sul banco degli imputati. Si e’ dichiarato colpevole, e ha cercato, tramite le sue ammissioni, di sfuggire al futuro che, almeno per lui sembra certo, fatto di una condanna a morte per impiccagione. Con lui sul banco degli imputati, altre due persone, Faheem Ansari e Sabauddin Ahmed, due indiani accusati di aver aiutato il commando.
Kasab e’ l’unico punto fermo di tutta la storia che porta ancora dietro un seguito di ombre e di domande e che e’ servita a rompere i rapporti fra India e Pakistan.
Quello che colpisce, e’ l’impatto che gli attentati di Mumbai hanno avuto sulla popolazione. Nonostante siano stati chiamati ”l’undici settembre indiano”, gli attentati alla capitale economica dell’India non hanno prodotto, se non nei primi giorni dopo i tragici eventi che hanno portato alla morte di almeno 170 persone (oltre 190 secondo altre fonti) quell’onda emotiva che si era vista negli Usa. Certo, non era il primo attentato che interessava ne’ l’India ne’ Mumbai, non era neanche il piu’ cruento, ma la sua mediaticita’ e il fatto che per 60 ore 10 ragazzini avessero in pugno, occupando luoghi significativi come la stazione, un centro ebraico, un ospedale e i due piu’ famosi alberghi, la piu’ importante citta’ indiana, faceva presagire ad altro.
Innanzitutto la situazione di sicurezza nel paese non e’ cambiata. Dimostrazione e’ il fatto che dopo Mumbai, in India le bombe si sono fatte sentire ancora. Nella capitale economica indiana, su 14 milioni di abitanti ufficiali (molti di piu’, secondo stime), ci sono appena 48000 ufficiali di polizia.
Gli alberghi a cinque stelle hanno messo sistemi di controllo dei bagagli all’esterno, ma tutto e’ gestito privatamente.
Le misure intraprese vengono considerate solo di facciata e la gente ha paura. I vertici dell’esercito, sia quelli in servizio che in pensione e i consulenti alla sicurezza nazionale, continuano ad avvertire della possibilita’ che un attacco simile a quello dell’anno scorso si ripeta. L’attentato ha colpito al centro del paese, ferendo la citta’ simbolo, mostrando la pochezza degli addetti alla sicurezza interna. Basti pensare che solo dopo dieci ore, e a bordo di un autobus di linea, riuscirono ad arrivare sul posto i reparti speciali indiani. Lo stesso ministro degli interni Palanippan Chidambaran si e’ dichiarato non soddisfatto della situazione di sicurezza del paese, parlando di risposta ”mista” a Mumbai e di ”vulnerabilita”’ del paese. Una situazione che certo non si addice ad una potenza economica e nucleare come l’India e che ha provocato non poche preoccupazioni al governo che si e’ affrettato ad aumentare gli stanziamenti.
Gli attentati di Mumbai hanno avuto il solo risultato di bloccare ad un binario morto i rapporti tra India e Pakistan che, fino a quel momento, viaggiavano abbastanza bene, a seguito di una forte ripresa rispetto al passato. All’indomani degli attentati i due paesi si sono scambiati accuse reciproche e dossier che incolpano l’uno i servizi segreti dell’altro paese, acuendo le tensioni. Si e’ arrivati a parlare di guerra. I dubbi restano, nonostante le inchieste. Non e’ ancora chiaro come sia stato possibile che i dieci terroristi siano arrivati su un gommone dal Pakistan praticamente dinanzi agli alberghi del lungomare di Mumbai senza essere intercettati; non si capisce come sia possibile che siano stati individuati solo due complici; non si capisce come sia potuta essere cosi’ tarda la risposta della polizia di Mumbai. Il processo non potra’ certamente chiarire questi interrogativi, ma dara’ agli indiani quello che vogliono: un colpevole pachistano da uccidere.

Mumbai: A mysterious letter threatening to trigger multiple bomb blasts in different places of the city, including the Raj Bhawan and the Chief Minister’s residence, threw the police into tizzy and prompted them to step up security around vital installations.

The letter, received by the Churchgate railway station master eight days ago, was written in Hindi and posted from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, the police said.

The letter claimed explosives have already reached three different locations in the metropolis and five to six persons had been given the responsibility to execute the blasts either on November 14 or November 28.

The letter claimed explosions would occur at Vidhan Bhavan, Governor and Chief Minister’s residences, RBI, iconic locations like Nariman Point, Juhu Beach, railway stations CST and Dadar, the police said.

It also mentioned the landmark Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels in South Mumbai and Central Hotel in suburban Kalina as the targets, they said.

The letter has named two persons Arvind Singh Arora and Bhupinder Singh Arora who it says have hidden explosive material, including RDX, near Bhabha Farid Institute of Technology in Dehradhun in Uttarkhand.

Though not ruling out the possibility of the letter being a prank, the police said vigil has been strengthened.

Quasi un anno dopo gli attentati di Mumbai agli alberghi del lungomare, che costarono la vita a piu’ di 170 persone, i corpi dei nove terroristi uccisi durante i giorni di assedio giacciono ancora nella camera mortuaria dell’ospedale di Mumbai, rifiutati da tutti. L’obitorio del J.J. Hospital e’ presidiato 24 ore su 24 e la sala ha la temperatura molto bassa, cosi’ da non permettere la decomposizione dei corpi. Sono li dal 29 novembre dell’anno scorso, quando fini’, dopo tre giorni, l’assedio alla citta’ che convolse due alberghi di lusso, la maggiore stazione ferroviaria, un ospedale e il centro culturale ebraico. In quella occasione, un solo terrorista su dieci sopravvisse ed ora e’ sotto processo, mentre gli altri, dopo gli esami autoptici, furono portati nell’obitorio dell’ospedale dove si trovano ancora oggi. Il governo locale ha inviato diverse richieste a quello pachistano tramite l’ambasciata di Islamabad in India, ma nessuno dal Pakistan ne ha reclamato i corpi, anche se gli indiani avevano indicato con precisione gli indirizzi dei nove. Inutile pensare di inumarli. Il consiglio dei musulmani indiani, ha vietato l’inumazione dei corpi dei nove terroristi nei cimiteri di tutto il paese, dopo aver bollato come ”non musulmani” i terroristi perch’ avrebbero dimostrato di non essere stati veri seguaci dell’Islam. Nessun cimitero musulmano del paese ha accettato i corpi tanto che qualcuno ha avanzato l’ipotesi di gettarli dinanzi al cancello dell’ambasciata pachistana o di gettarli nel mare Arabico. La soluzione e’ difficile, perche’ nessuno vuole urtare i sentimenti degli induisti ne’ quelli dei musulmani e tantomeno creare un incidente con il Pakistan. Da pochi giorni e’ stato eletto il nuovo governo dello stato del Maharashtra, a cui e’ demandata la decisione sul futuro dei nove cadaveri.

I just had the most relaxing Balinese massage in the spa at the Oberoi in Delhi. I’ve been working hard all week and my shoulders were somewhere up around my ears, so I needed help to unwind before flying home tomorrow. Balinese massage uses a variety of techniques including kneading and stroking, acupressure and reflexology. My therapist, from Thailand, used “Euphoria” oil, from a beautiful blue apothecary’s bottle, which contained lemon and ylang-ylang.

As usual, the bits of the treatments I enjoyed the most were the extremities. When it came to my feet, there was some serious reorganisation of my toes, and plenty of powerful pressure on the soles, which always drains my tension away. The neck and scalp massage was equally de-stressing. And, of course, my therapist did lots of deep work on my shoulders, trying to move my muscles into some semblance of normality. If I could end every working day with this massage, I would indeed float around on a euphoric cloud.

Afterwards, I had ginger and honey tea and now I’ve come back up to my room to pack my case! I’d certainly recommend the spa at the Oberoi. It’s new, modern, with lots of beige marble, glass and polished wood. The changing room has a steam room and sauna, and everything you could wish for in the way of shampoo, moisturiser, conditioner, combs, toothbrushes, and unlimited towels and robes. There’s certainly no need to bring anything down from your room. Lots of lovely treatments to choose from, including several ayurvedic ones — quite right, too, as we are in India!

It’s been such a busy week, I haven’t had a chance to sit on the loungers by their outdoor pool and try swimming in the sun, but I did try the indoor pool. This is an oddly thin rectangular shape, with infinity edges, and some awkward steps to get in. Once you’re in, though, the water has a pleasant temperature, is a deep blue, and you can certainly get your laps in. The gym is also spotless, well kept, with plenty of Himalayan water and towels for you, and each set of headphones comes with a new pack of sponges to put on, to protect your delicate ears in a hygienic fashion.

The other thing I like about this hotel is that it has bowls with rose-petals in everywhere you look. I’m certainly going to miss that when I’m at home!

EIH Ltd that runs the Oberoi and Trident chains of hotels is apprehensive that from September onwards, international tourist inflow would be severely affected, owing to the Swine flu pandemic. This may be a telling blow for the country’s hospitality industry in the coming months.

Speaking to reporters after the company’s fifty-ninth annual general meeting, EIH Ltd Chairman PRS Oberoi said that early signs of recovery in the hospitality sector following the economic slowdown might only happen after October 2010.

“Occupancies and average room rates continue to fall resulting in lower profitability,” Oberoi said. EIH’s average room rates have fallen 30 per cent. “We have seen how the hotel industry was affected during the 1991 slowdown, during 9/11 and also during the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, but this slowdown is the worst in my memory.”

Oberoi also said that EIH would spend Rs 250 crore till 2011 in new hotel properties and renovating existing ones. It has recently decided to run a 100-room Trident brand hotel under management contract at Dehradun. Constructions of a 299-room Oberoi hotel and a 326-room Trident hotel are underway at Hyderabad.

The company is also constructing hotels in Mumbai and Gurgaon. It is also planning hotels in Abu Dhabi, Oman and Morocco.

If motels are usually the meeting places for criminals and luxury hotels in foreign countries are targets for terrorists then that leaves out youth hostels as the safest and cheapest place to stay. When I travel I always choose to stay in them and after the killings in India I will cancel all my bookings in Mumbai. To cancel is the only way I can afford to stay in such hotels anyway!

THE sole Scots survivor of the Mumbai massacre says he feared “certain death” while trapped in his hotel room for two days.

In a business trip that clashed with an Islamic terror group’s co-ordinated raid of Indian hotels, Roger Hunt, 43, was moments from becoming one of the 170 dead.

Speaking at the weekend in his first interview about the siege, the Royal Bank of Scotland manager told of how he escaped a shower of bullets.

He had just left the Oberoi Hotel’s restaurant when gunmen burst in and “sprayed bullets” at the very table he had eaten dinner at.

He said: “I watched them open fire with their machine guns.

“They sprayed bullets right where I had just been sitting.

“I think the smiling waitress was one of the first to die.”

The Macduff-based businessman fled the gunfire in what has since been named Black Wednesday – November 26 last year.

The terror attackers of Lashkar-e-Taiba raided hotels, businesses and a train station in the Indian city’s financial district.

But Hunt, an RBS human resources manager for the past 25-years, was one of the lucky few who escaped slaughter.

After racing to his 14th floor hotel room, he planned his tactics to outwit the gunmen.

But the terrorists had started a fire on the floor below, causing smoke to fill Hunt’s room while he desperately tried to call a local friend for help.

He said: “The situation was clearly far worse than I had imagined, and when I pulled back the window-length curtain a wall of thick acrid smoke filled the room.

“My colleague was shouting on the phone insisting I should get out of the room. I had to hang up to be sick.

“This was the first time I thought I was going to die.”

But if he left the room he could be savaged by the killers, who were scouring the hotel for Westerners.

He added: “Leaving the room I knew I faced certain death with the gunmen on the loose.”

He decided his best chance of survival was to stay in the room, so shoved a sofa against the door.

And he had to ignore his telephone ringing in a bid to make the room seem unoccupied to any passing terrorists.

He even forced himself to resist the urge to call home to wife Irene, 43, and children Stephanie, 14, Lisa, 21, and Christopher, 19.

Reliving those excruciating 43 hours, he said: “There was persistent gunfire and explosions and every so often you would hear the clicking of doors as guests would leave their rooms only to be gunned down in the corridor.

“The shrieks of a woman on the stairwell before she was shot still haunt me.”

He spent hours reflecting on the death of his 16 year-old brother Christopher, who died in a fishing boat accident off Kinlochbervie in the 1980s.

He said: “I thought how my parents might have felt knowing both of their sons died in dramatic circumstances.”

After forcing himself to stay awake for two days, Hunt was rescued by Indian commandos, the Black Cats, who had killed the last remaining fanatics and led survivors to safety.

The first thing he did was call home to Banffshire, only for a grenade blast to blow his mobile out of his hands.

He said: “It’s a memory that my wife and I will take to our graves.

“Hearing her voice and being able to say I was alive was overwhelming.”

Hunt has since left his job with RBS and is writing a book about his ordeal.

Ha ammesso di essere colpevole, Mohammaf Ajmal Kasab, l’unico terrorista sopravvissuto del commando che il 26 novembre dell’anno scorso assalto’ due alberghi a Mumbai ed altri luoghi della capitale economica indiana, facendo oltre 170 vittime. Dopo essersi dichiarato colpevole appena dopo l’arresto, dopo aver ritrattato mentendo sulla sua data di nascita e il suo nome, Kasab, forse sperando di evitare il patibolo, ha stamattina ammesso, dinanzi al tribunale speciale organizzato per fare luce sulle responsabilita’ degli attentati, la sua colpevolezza. Il 22enne attentatore, che aveva dichiarato di essere minorenne per evitare la morte e per questo fu sottoposto a visite mediche, all’apertura dell’udienza di oggi in una dichiarazione spontanea ha ammesso di aver partecipato a tutte le fasi dell’attentato. Alla domanda del giudice sul perche’ non l’avesse fatto prima e avesse ritrattato la sua prima confessione, Kasab ha risposto di essere ora venuto a conoscenza che il Pakistan ha ammesso il fatto che lui sia pachistano, cosa che, in futuro, potrebbe anche aprirgli le porte di una eventuale, seppur difficilissima da ottenere, estradizione. E’ stato l’ultimo avvocato di Kasab, Abbas Kazmi, a convincerlo a confessare. Ma il suo gesto non ha cambiato l’opinione che di lui hanno gli indiani. Facendosi portavoce delle idee dei cittadini di Mumbai, il primo ministro dello stato del Mahasthra, del quale Mumbai e’ capitale, ha detto che in ogni caso il processo contro Kasab e gli altri terroristi sara’ veloce e che il giovane sara’ impiccato. Nella sua confessione, Kasab ha anche spiegato il modus operandi del commando terrorista e i dettagli dell’operazione. Dal Pakistan, il ministro della difesa Choudhary Ahmad Mukhtar, ha detto che questa confessione, comunque, non rappresenta una prova soprattutto del coinvolgimento pachistano negli attentati.
