Just a quick post from Brice: We had our first middle school event tonight!

We had a small group of kids and played several games. One involved Gummi Bears, which were inhaled at an alarming rate by all, including our 4 year old, who “really likes daddy’s new job!”

I shared with the kids from John 3 when Nicodemus approaches Jesus after dark to get his questions answered.

At the end of our time I had the kids each write down 3 things. Here are the questions and some of the highlighted responses.

1. What do Brice, Julie and Will need to know about living in Germany?

A: German Pizza tastes different.

A: Germans stare at you a lot, sometimes.

A: Don’t drive too slow on the Autobahn!

2. What do you love to do with your friends in the area?

A: Shopping

A: Play sports with friends

A: Get pizza with friends

3. If you could ask God one thing, what would it be?

A: Can you get me a Lamborghini?

A: Can you give me a life?

A: Are you real?

A: Will you bring Chick-fil-A to Germany? (Coincidentally, I ask God this daily…I love this kid.)

Our Adventures on Wednesday (Disclaimer/note from Brice…Julie has promised not to blog everyday.)

Will and I both slept in past 10:00 am, which was quite necessary since we were awake until 3:00 am! It was nice to have a leisurely morning in our new home. After “breakfast” (it was more like brunch), we had a Skype call with Julie’s parents and made plans to head to IKEA. (I’m laughing right now at the fact that I thought I could wait an entire week before going to IKEA … wait ’til you have enough clothes to fill two closets and only ten hangers!)

I was nervous about Brice’s first drive on the Autobahn, but I really wanted hangers. So, he made sure he knew where he was going (we are so thankful for wireless internet in this apartment), we got dressed and ready to go, then set off for a German/Swedish adventure.

Have I mentioned that we are driving a black, two door, hatchback BMW? Will helped me name it Darth. It’s awesome. (Well, getting Will into his mammoth car seat in a two-door coupe is not awesome, but it will be awesome when he’s in a sleek little booster seat. We are planning to fatten him up with weinerschnitzel.) So, we piled into Darth and were at IKEA in less than ten minutes with no traffic violations or wrong turns. This IKEA is rather glorious, let me tell you. It’s a two story building (blue, of course) with huge glass windows on the top floor. We figured out how to get to the main entrance from the parking garage, couldn’t figure out how to get a shopping cart upstairs, and decided not to put Will in the kids’ play area until we feel a bit more comfortable with him in German-speaking situations. They have interesting things in IKEA anyway, so we knew he’d be fine.

I know I don’t have to go into detail about a trip to IKEA – most of you have been there and done that – but it was an important part of our assimilation process. So, we enjoyed a delicious lunch of meatballs and mashed potatoes (Will loved it) and enjoyed the beautiful view out of the huge glass windows. The eating area in this IKEA is pretty fancy! Parts of it look like a swanky club … and then there are little play areas for the kids. Will was especially impressed with the conveyor belts that took our trays away.

This shopping trip will go down in history for many reasons, one of which was the eager, relaxed demeanor displayed by my husband, who is usually anti-IKEA. (Psst … wives, take your husband to IKEA on a Wednesday around 1:00 pm. Hardly anyone else will be there.) We strolled leisurely through the place, picking up necessities such as a step stool (Will couldn’t reach our sink faucet), hand towels for the bathroom, plastic plates & bowls for Will (almost all of ours are glass, and the floors are tile/laminate – yikes), a hand broom/dustpan set, a tall broom & dustpan set, a candle, and six sets of hangers. (Home décor will come much later … if ever.) We also bought Will a stuffed puppy, which he eventually used as a pillow. He named the dog “boy,” and it’s now the son of his most-loved stuffed animal, “Puppy.” Maybe someday he will get into his mom’s habit of naming things with silly names (ie. Mr. Boom-Boom, Dirty Jennifer, Ninja, and Miss Jackson), but it’s just “Puppy” and “Boy” for now.

We didn’t get on the Autobahn correctly on the way home from IKEA, so we got a bit lost. We ran into some closed roads (although the signs showed that they usually take you to Oberursel), figured out that we were lost in Bad Hamburg, and Brice was able to get us back home by looking on his phone at the last screen he loaded from Google Maps at the apartment. Will was asleep in his car seat by the time we got lost, so it wasn’t very stressful. Whew!

The rest of the night was spent sweeping, organizing the closets, Skyping with Brice’s parents, and eating an easy dinner. (Brice made ravioli from a can, which we ate with our yummy loaf of bread from the grocery store.) I’d say that our second day in Germany was a great one, even though it was also quite Swedish.

A word of caution: the following blog post is written by Julie, which means you’re in for a LOT of details, some drama, and many types of punctuation. I would also include a ridiculous number of emoticons if I knew how to do such things on Open Office, but I don’t. Anyway, welcome to my head space!

January 9, 2012

The airport was an adventure, as we expected! Checking our six huge suitcases – two of which we knew were overweight and ALL of which were filled to capacity – was quite a feat. We were so grateful to have the help of my parents and Brice’s parents! The Lufthansa employee in charge of weighing bags had to have us rearrange the contents of a few of our carry-ons, but we didn’t have to part with any of our belongings.

Tom & Bernice Speckhardt and Julia Cooke from Youth Compass came to the airport to see us off, as did my friend Alison and her precious daughters, Anja and Adah. The goodbyes were the hardest part, of course. We are grateful to have friends and family we love so much.

After grabbing a quick bite for lunch in the International terminal, we boarded the plane for Frankfurt. Will was SO excited and adorable! He watched “Puss in Boots” after take off, and then ate some of his dinner before we decided it was time to sleep. He resisted sleep for quite a while, but finally dozed off. He slept for a total of three hours. Brice thinks I slept a bit – I’m guessing it was twenty minutes, if that. A few babies were screaming their heads off (it wasn’t just crying; it was legit screaming), which made it difficult to sleep. Next time I’ll bring ear plugs and an eye mask! The breakfast was good, the in-flight video/audio malfunctioned and couldn’t be used for the last hour of the flight, and we only had one bout of absolutely terrifying turbulence.

After getting off of the plane, we boarded buses with the rest of the passengers from our flight and rode to the International Arrivals area. (This is one big airport, y’all.) Will loved riding a bus while standing up! Customs was no problem, but it did take us a long time to make it to the baggage area with our five carry-ons, giant car seat, and Will. I didn’t feel comfortable having Will go down an escalator without holding one of our hands (which weren’t free), so we had to find an elevator quite a few times. (Note to self: Have Will practice safely getting on and off of an escalator without holding our hands.)

Tim Schmidt, the Youth Compass Frankfurt Board Chair, was waiting for us in the baggage area. He and Brice piled our suitcases (and some of the carry-ons) on to rolling carts, and we made the journey to the parking garage. Brice almost killed some people along the way, but it was by accident. (Did I mention that I’m thankful for your prayers?) Here’s what happened: In order to get to the parking garage with a lot of luggage, you have to take the rolling luggage carts down an escalator – we watched Tom do it when we visited in October – but we hadn’t tried it ourselves. I guess there’s a little trick to it (I didn’t even try), and Brice will probably be really good at it next time! This time, however, Brice’s cart didn’t lock on to the escalator correctly, so the two HUGE suitcases (weighing anywhere from 50 – 75 pounds) on top of his cart tumbled down the escalator, buckling the knees of two men in lederhosen, just steps from making it off the escalator. OK, OK …they weren’t in lederhosen. Nor were they directly in front of him, which would have forced a reenactment of Indiana Jones trying to escape the huge boulder. (Could you imagine if there were small children in front of him?!? They would have been crushed.)

I didn’t think there was a chance in the world that we would fit all of our luggage in Tim’s car (a mid-size Mercedes wagon), but he had Will and I get in and they just filled every square inch of the car with stuff. I wish someone would have taken a picture! I didn’t really want them to bother with pictures at the time, though – I was stuffed into a pretty small space. I’m pretty sure it’s a method of torture in some circles. I didn’t have a panic attack, so thanks again for your prayers!

Arriving at the apartment was fun – Will was very excited to see our new place, and we brought out a surprise for his new room: a Lego Darth Vader alarm clock! Brice and Tim unpacked the car, I unpacked the suitcases, and then we determined that we waited way too long to get lunch. We were feeling pretty hungry and tired!

The easiest thing at that point was to go to a restaurant, so we went to a pizza place that Brice and I went to during our visit in October. We remembered how to get there and it wasn’t far, so Brice got his first opportunity to drive our car! We didn’t know the speed limit, but we made it there alive. After eating, we went to a nearby grocery store for some essentials. It was SILENT in the grocery store, which felt so awkward to me! Eek! We couldn’t find everything we were looking for and I was nowhere NEAR fast enough getting the groceries off the conveyor belt, but we survived.

We took a nap after our outing, but I don’t think I slept. I could hear the people in the apartment above us, which made me nervous about our relationship with the people who live in the apartment below us. (Remember how Will jumps/runs instead of walking and yells/shouts instead of talking?) I remember marveling at the fact that my body felt like lead and I couldn’t even move, but I wasn’t asleep. I wondered if I’d ever sleep again …

I unpacked, Brice made eggs and bacon, Will played with the toys that we brought in our bags, and then we had our first meal together in the apartment. Quite nice! I’m so glad we have all of the things we need and we’re on this adventure as a family. (Oh! Speaking of prayer requests, we need a dryer!) The rest of the night was kind of a blur … I remember organizing toiletries into our medicine cabinet (first time having a medicine cabinet – love it), telling Will to be quiet 5,412 times, and doing the dishes. Brice was also trying to work out some issues with Fed Ex, which will likely come up in subsequent posts. Turns out it isn’t easy to ship boxes internationally, especially if you’re trying to wheel ‘n’ deal for a reduced shipping rate.

The bummer of the night was Will not being able to fall asleep. I cannot tell you how disappointing this was, especially since I had Jack Bauer-ed myself to death by not sleeping for two days. I did some things Dr. Phil would never allow, such as turning on a movie to help Will fall asleep and letting him eat pizza and yogurt in bed. He fell asleep about 3:00 am Frankfurt time, I believe.

Welp, that takes us from Monday morning in Seattle to the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday in Oberursel. I’m sure there is some sort of blogging etiquette manual which forbids such long posts, but I haven’t read it. I’m sure my next blog post will be just as detailed! I gotta be me.

Auf Wiedersehen for now!

*Fünfunddreißig = Thirty five (the number of hours I was awake)

It’s a website that has really been a God-send for me. Much of my former work was spent connecting God’s Word and the Christian faith to modern culture. Most of the connections I made were to TV shows and movies. I continue to do that for Faith and Geekery and while I wrote a good number of ideas connecting Christmas movies to Jesus, I have failed to explain what Christmas is like here in Germany. It is quite a bit different.

Christmas in Germany is defined by the Christmas Markets. I think we visited seven of them this year. Each one a little different and each town and village has one. We visited Frankfurt’s which was very large, very crowded and lasted for a solid month. We also visited Stierstadt’s, our own little village, which was small, sparse and lasted for two whole days.

Christmas Markets always involve food, hot drinks and Christmas decorations. Every Christmas Market will have gluhwein, a spiced wine served hot. Some of the more popular markets also have feuerzangenbowle, a similar drink to gluhwein except that it it involves rum, sugar and fire.

And of course there are brats and potatoes and chocolate covered fruit and pretzels. Some markets have carnival rides, most have giant Christmas trees and pretty lights. Decorations are a bit different too. In the states, most Advent Wreathes are three blue candles with one pink candle or three purple candles with one pink candle. Here in Germany the colors are always the same: four red or four white or four orange or four purple. There is never an offset color for the third week of Advent.

The Sternschnuppenmarkt. Otherwise known as the shooting or twinkling stars market in Wiesbaden.

While all of that was very pleasant, the thing that surprised me most was how many German families decorate their Christmas trees. They use real, actual candles, lit aflame on Christmas Eve at the very least. Families don’t leave the room when the candles are lit and most keep a bucket of water right next to the tree, but I honestly couldn’t believe this still was a real thing.

Also, most families don’t put a star or an angel on top of the Christmas tree. Many people have fancy stars that they hang in their windows, which are quite pretty, but the tops of trees are often bare, at least on the trees I observed.

Julie and I just walked back to the apartment from dinner at the Brauhaus, where I apparently ordered a light meal … of FOUR types of pork over potatoes and topped with a cabbage salad. It was amazing. Our time here has also been amazing. Here’s a brief recap with a few thoughts.

Day one: We got settled into our apartment and walked about town to get oriented and try to force ourselves to stay awake. Seeing our living space and getting to know the town was incredibly helpful and has allowed us to process what life here will be like. We also had a great dinner with Tim and Amy, the local Youth Compass board chair and his wife. It’s great to meet others dedicated to this ministry and to “Third Culture Kids.”

Day two: We went into downtown Frankfurt to see the main shopping area and learn more about the train system. We finished the day at a middle school soccer game, got a chance to meet some kids and had a tour around FIS (Frankfurt International School). I even saw some middle school girl drama unfold in an array of accents. Kids are kids, but these kids have some unique challenges and we’re looking forward to working with them.

Day three: We drove to Dusseldorf, which was about a two hour drive. We met with leaders from several different European cities and spoke with them about working with TCKs in their countries. It was great to be with others that are “in the trenches” — wanting to impact the lives of kids in their part of the world. When we returned to Oberursel, we were invited by some of the FIS parents to attend a music festival and had the opportunity to see a German Abba cover band and an Irish duo … not to mention some incredible dancing.

Day four was spent at church worshipping with people from many different nations. Our reception was warm and we ended up staying about an hour after church speaking with people. I even got to see some folks I had met in 2004 — it was great to reconnect. Once we left church, Tim and Amy opened their home and we had a chance to meet the rest of the local Youth Compass board and their kids. It was incredible to meet couples from the US, South Africa, England and Tokyo. These couples also represent different churches throughout the area and we’re excited to work alongside of them.

Day 5 (today): We met with the General Secretary of the International Baptist Convention and heard a little about his oversight of churches around the world. I’ll be working with him as we equip volunteers to work with the kids in their own communities throughout Europe. We also met with a local (Frankfurt) pastor and youth pastor. We had a great time of sharing and prayer.

Overall it was a great trip and we’re excited to get back over here and start working in this community and in this region. The need to connect with kids and provide support to staff and volunteers is great and we couldn’t do it without your support and prayers.

We’ve landed in Frankfurt and made our way to Oberursel. We’re here for a few days gett

We’ve landed in Frankfurt and made our way to Oberursel. We’re here for a few days getting the lay of the land, meeting some key people and attending a workshop with other Youth Compass staff and volunteers. It’s been a perfect fall day, cool and crisp with sunny skies. We’re taking some walks to explore and try to keep ourselves awake. Speaking of sleeping, guess what we didn’t do on the plane…

I thought I was prepared, but there are a few sounds not even ear plugs can block out. Like screaming babies and parents shushing their screaming babies and Cap’n Crunch. I nicknamed the guy across the aisle Cap’n Crunch because he had every snack food known to man and they were all in crunchy bags. I can’t tell you how much I wanted to reach over and dump out his Cheetos on his tray table so he wouldn’t have to keep reaching in his bag. By the way Cap’n Crunch fell asleep during our decent into Frankfurt. 9 hours and 35 minutes into a 10 hour flight and he falls asleep. I guess all the crunching and chewing took it out of him.

The highlight so far has been to explore the town of Oberursel and see the apartment where we’ll live when we move over in January. Here’s some photos.

Elvira Kirsch and Anna Donalli introduced their collections at the Berenberg Polo tournament in Bad Homburg/Oberursel this weekend. We had a great time watching the game, people and graceful animals. I have to admit, I was never the girl who wanted a pony or horse, but I think I want one now. Thank you Elli & Anna for making me dream bigger

Attention! Lessons I learned this weekend: 1) The first polo game was played in Persia (5th Century BC). 2) Polo “ponies” need to be trained so that they are not afraid to bump into other horses and be quick to follow the ball. 3) A “chukka” (round) lasts 7 minutes and it is typical for a single player to have numerous horses and change every chukka due to intensity and speed of the game.

4) During half-time guests are invited to go onto the field to participate in a polo tradition called “divot stamping”.

As a recipient of the Mazda Nationwide Community scholarship, Mazda, in addition to paying full tuit

As a recipient of the Mazda Nationwide Community scholarship, Mazda, in addition to paying full tuition for 10 kids to go to Germany, also let us visit their Research and Development headquarters. (Usually this “Mazda Day” is held in Japan, but as I explained before, the earthquake and tsunami caused the country to change to Germany.)

So this wasn’t the main headquarters of Mazda, and this was the first time the European staff had to take kids around their workplace. Still, even this place left me like this:

For instance, they showed us the complete design process of this concept car, the Mazda Kiyora:

This car is pure sex.

Let’s just say that I had no idea how much went into designing a car. The Kiyora is inspired by water, for example, thus the shape and color. But the designers also wanted to design a city car that was healthy for the driver. Therefore they decided to put a water-filtering rain catcher on the roof, a air-cleaning activated-carbon sculpture near the passenger seat, and build the entire car with carbon fiber to make it lightweight. Just to name a few of the cool things in this car. Basically? I want to design cars now.

He then explained how he went to design school, etc, etc.

They also showed us their design studio. I wish I had photos, but as a competitive research and development facility, Mazda didn’t let us take cameras in.

But some cool things we saw? The 3-D computer models of the Kiyora created from mere sketches. And renderings of the Kiyora out of clay, both scaled down and full size. Even the materials that go into the car get researched. One room was filled entirely with different fabrics, color swatches, cut-outs from fashion magazines, and predictions for color trends in the future.

We also got a chance to talk to the multicultural staff (from all parts of Europe and several direct from Japan) and had a video conference with Jeffrey Guyton, the president of Mazda Motor Europe.

Mazda Europe's operating language is English, despite having employees of all different nationalities (we met people from Belgium, Germany, and Japan, just to name a few.) The president here is actually from Ohio, but is fluent in Japanese.

So yes, Mazda was really cool! My fellow students and I were actually a little perplexed by the end. Why would Mazda do all of this– give us a full scholarship, take us into their headquarters, feed us, and give us an awesome tour? Whatever their reasons, I’m not complaining!

The best part of the day, though? I finally, finally got to speak Japanese! It’s still a bit shocking, studying Japanese for three years and suddenly going to Germany. Many times, when I want to say something, I’ll know how to say it in Japanese but not German. But at Mazda, there were native Japanese-speakers, so I decided to give it a shot.

I suppose this caught people’s attention, because at the end of the day, one of the Japanese researchers approached me and asked, in Japanese, if I knew how to speak Japanese. I told her I spoke a little bit, except…

Well, I tried. I was able to communicate that I studied Japanese for three years, that my Japanese teacher actually came from Japan, and that my Japanese is really terrible! Which, for me, is a big accomplishment. My dream will always be to go to Japan, but for now, I’m in GERMANY! Which is also incredibly, totally awesome.

I’m a little late with this recap, but I’ve been meaning to tell you about Hessentag. S

I’m a little late with this recap, but I’ve been meaning to tell you about Hessentag. So, the overall conclusion is: it was fine. Fun while it lasted but nice to have things back to normal around here. Driving was a complete pain- don’t even get me started on the obnoxious 20 minute detour I had to take to get to my house when I was all of 500 meters (yes, I’m all metric now) away. So frustrating. And I’ve realized that no matter where you go, you can’t escape bad Neil Diamond covers. I mean EVERYONE wants to sing “Sweet Caroline”, and tone-deaf Germans are no exception. But aside from a few inconveniences and a bit of additional noise at night, things weren’t too bad. In fact, I think Quinn was rather happy to have so much to do right outside our door.

On the first Saturday that Hessentag was going on there was a huge party in one of the outdoor arenas that was set up for concerts. It was called “Just White” and you’ll see why below. Apparently it was “the best party ever!”. We wouldn’t know. But Joe and I did enjoy sitting on our front steps watching the swarms of enthusiastic party-goers pass by. The couple pictures below were taken from our third floor window.

"Just White" party goers passing by our house.

"Hey, let's all wear white and head into a field for a big party!"

Quinn rode a little carousel for the first time. Of course the very first time we put her on, we didn’t have our cameras. She loved it and didn’t want off. The next couple times, she seemed a little less sure about the whole deal. Her friend Sophia however, was obsessed and threw a monster fit when she was finally pulled off the ride kicking and screaming. I didn’t take a picture of that either, but is it terrible that I sort of wanted to capture Quinn maintaining composure while another child came totally un-glued? I was so tempted.

Quinn and Sophia riding in the truck... Quinn is locking in on where Daddy is.

And now she is checking in with me...Sophia on the other hand doesn't care at all where her parents are, ha!

One of Quinn’s favorite parts of Hessentag was venturing to the area set up with animals for the kids to see. The horses were a particular favorite. Almost daily she went to the door “neighing” to let us know she wanted to go see the horses. I wish I would have taken more (better) pictures because they were so beautiful. And there were a few foals there too who were only 4 weeks old. Precious.

Side note- it was so sunny, I could barely see at all. And yes, it was cold enough for sweaters in June! It was freezing actually. Not the best picture, but it shows some of our friends we visited every day for a week and a half!

We also made many trips to see the ducks:

Quinn watching the ducks..and yes her feet are in the fence and off the ground. She tried scaling the fence several times, but it was pretty wobbly and wouldn't really support her weight.

Quack, quack. Um the ducks here are different. I don't think you can really tell in this picture, but I've never seen these kind before.

"Why do we have to be separated by a fence?
Here are a few extra miscellaneous photos:

Personally I find them to be disappointing though- they never taste as good as they look. Do you think Dr. Atkins was German?

We survived the set-up, tear-down, and 1.5 million people streaming through our little town. I guess the highlights were: the food, the animals, and the people watching! Now it’s back to our normal, quieter daily routines.

Okay the streets probably have names, but we can’t pronounce them…yet. I’ll write more soon about what we’ll be doing in our work with Youth Compass, but I needed a quick post for this evening.

The town of Oberursel, Germany is home to Frankfurt International School and Frankfurt International Christian Fellowship(Church). Oberursel is most likely where we will be calling home starting in January. It’s a smaller community just northwest of Frankfurt, but has several options for getting in and out of the city. It should be easy to pick you up at the airport when you come and visit. :-)

Here are a couple of videos if you’re interested. (Prepare to be inspired by the music in video two)

Of Hessentag. Every year in the Bundesland (state) of Hessen there is a party, festival, outrageous

Of Hessentag. Every year in the Bundesland (state) of Hessen there is a party, festival, outrageous number of people herded into one particular city- whatever you want to call it. This year it’s in…wait for it….Oberursel! That’s right everyone, we will be the lucky recepients of over a million (anticipated) visitors between the 10th and 19th of June. I mean Bryan Adams and Roxette are performing. Need I say more?

Preparations have been going on for quite awhile now to bring the city into it’s most shining, glorious state for all others to see. There has been roadwork, painting and a renovation of the train station, among many other improvements. And now the town is literally buzzing with the constant movement of people setting up booths, building stages, and finalizing all the details that have been planned for months. You can practically feel the frenzy of activity as soon as you open our front door.

Here are just a couple pics I took on my walk to the bank this morning:

This huge ferris wheel is right down the street from us.

We will probably hear the screams of thrill/ fear all day and night even in our house.

Huge sand replication of a castle in nearby Eppstein

I was trying to get the castle, not all the signs and protective fencing...but basically if you destroy this sandcastle, you're in BIG trouble!!

This sandcastle is literally under video surveillance.

I actually watched part of this being made which was pretty amazing. It took several days and the man doing it had a paper with a picture of the real castle on it and a shovel. Seriously. And maybe some little pics or something for the finer details, which my lousy pictures just don’t show. He literally just looked at a picture and sculpted as he went. Pretty impressive. Sandcastles were never my forte. I mean, I could barely get enough sturdy molds of sand to make the most basic of structures. This guy had some serious skills.

We will undoubtedly enjoy some good food and entertainment over the next week and a half, but ultimately I’m sure we’ll be ready for things to go back to normal. You know, no porta-Johns across the street, no driving restrictions, and a quieter hum that normally fills the air.

The early bird catches the worm. I woke up extra early and headed for the train station to Oberursel

The early bird catches the worm. I woke up extra early and headed for the train station to Oberursel from Frankfurt. There are many small cities on the outskirts of Frankfurt that are picturesque. With my camera as my friend I took a few photos.

The specialty shops, businesses, restaurants and bars call invitingly to sit and view what they have to offer for you.

It’s fun to go window shopping in Oberursel.

Not to mention the wonderful architecture.
I was particularly interested in the designs and workmanship.

What interests you?

And the abundant water that runs through the city that feeds the natural surroundings.
It is every gardener’s dream.

April 2011.

To buy a fat hog. Just kidding. NO hogs were purchased. We did however take a lovely walk through town yesterday which included going to the local outdoor market. On Saturdays there is a small market set up in town with lots of different produce and fresh meats and cheeses available. There are also flowers, unique spices, and lots of baked goods as well.

The weather yesterday was cool but gorgeous. Since everything is closed on Sundays it seems like EVERYONE is out on Saturdays doing their shopping for the weekend. The town was buzzing with activity. We took a stroll, stopping at the market (eating a few pastries) and just enjoying the sunshine.

This is Oberursel, the city where I’ll be staying. Doesn’t it look like such a typical German town?

It seems to be the German equivalent of Milngavie, except bigger – it has about 43, 000 inhabitants. And it’s been around for longer (since 791 AD, according to Wikipedia.) The centre of Frankfurt is about 20 minutes away by train, and there’s a night bus running between them at weekends.

It’s famous for holding the world ‘soap box derby,’ championships, whatever that means. It’s also known for ‘Brunnenfest,’ or ‘fountain festival,’ an annual village celebration which is celebrated in July and attracts visitors from around the world. Kind of like a cooler version of Milngavie week, from what I’ve read, with rides, live music and dancing and a huge fireworks display. And in early December there’s a Christmas market, so that’s where you’ll all be getting your Christmas presents

There isn’t that much else I can find about Oberursel, so moving onto Frankfurt…

Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on the river Main, as opposed to the smaller city of Frankfurt Oder) is known as the financial capital of Europe, due to the European Central Bank being situated there. As a result, it has some really cool skyscrapers and the downtown area is nicknamed ‘Mainhattan.’ It also has some incredible sunsets, as a result of air pollution:

(Okay, I’ll admit it: that picture is the reason I decided on Frankfurt. I love my sunsets )

It has a lot of museums. Like, a LOT. They even have a district called ‘Museumsufer,’ or Museum Embankment. To give a few examples, they have museums for: architecture, German film, communication, world cultures, Jewish museum, natural history, modern art, German leather (?!), money (again, ?!) , archaeology and photography (I’m definitely going to that one.) Other attractions include a zoo; Grüneburgpark, Frankfurt’s most popular park and the city’s largest flea market in Sachsenhausen.

Oberursel and Frankfurt are both near the Taunus mountain range. It’s not exactly the Alps, but they’ll do. (I hate flat places.) And according to Wikipedia, “since many of the Taunus mountain slope intercepts rain clouds coming from the northwest before the city limits, the weather in Oberursel usually a bit nicer than it is predicted for the region.” Awesome

So there you go, this is where I’ll be staying for the next nine months or so.

Nachzuholen bleiben mir also die Vorträge “Witz bleib drin, du bist umzingelt!

Genau mein Thema also.
