I have a love/hate relationship with Oberweis.  I love their milk and ice cream.  I hate their owner.  Jim Oberweis is a name every Illinoisan knows.  It would be hard not to.  He’s ran for and lost just about every public office in Illinois.  He’s the king of saying something stupid and can’t make it out of a primary.  Usually, he does more damage to the Republican party by running a smear campaign in the primary that gives the Democratic challenge in the general election a head start.  Case in point, the last gubernatorial election.  He ran a smear campaign against rival GOPer Judy Bar Topinka showing her dancing with incarcerated former Governor George Ryan.  He called it, “The Pay-To-Play Polka.”  When he lost the primary, Topinka’s Democratic opponent and incumbent, Rod Blagojevich started using the same video and same tag lines against Topika driving home the connection to her and Ryan.   Blagojevich won and now Illinois is the political laughing stock of the country.

Oberweis milk on the other hand, is the best cow juice you will ever have.  I hate buying it because all it does is fund another failing campaign, but I just can’t help it.  I started buying the milk six years ago before I really knew who Jim Oberwies was.  The thing that drew me to it was the glass bottles.  No plastic here.  All Oberweis milk is sold in glass bottles. I picked one up at the store and fell in love with the stuff.  I’m not really a milk drinker, but I was drinking three or four gallons a week.

A year or so ago, Oberwies Dairy opened a store in Bradley, IL.  My dad and brother stopped there once and said it was too expensive so I could never get them to go back.  J and I were in town and she feels the same way about Oberweis milk as I do, so we went across town to check the store out for ourselves.

Just like the milk, the ice cream is delicious.  It just tastes so much richer than most other ice creams.  There were a lot of candy pieces in each of our cups, but I would have been just as happy if I were just eating ice cream.  I got about halfway through mine and hit a wall.  I wanted to keep eating, but my stomach was telling me to stop.  I sat there for a few minutes hoping my stomach would give in and let me continue, but it didn’t, so we hoped back in the truck and took the ice cream home.  It won’t be soft serve when I get back to eating, but it will still be delicious.

I really didn’t think the price was all that bad.  The ice cream was worth it. It may not be an everyday treat, but it is a once in a while treat that is worth the price. 

As far as Oberweis Dairy goes, I still think the coolest thing is that they do home delivery.  Never in my lifetime has anyone delivered milk to my door.  It’s something Oberweis brought back a few years ago and I think it’s a cool idea.

There are a few stores in Michigan in case your wondering.  Oberweis has shops in Troy, Novi, and Royal Oak.  If you’re in the area, I would suggest giving it a shot.  Nothing beats Oberweis milk.

7h30, je me réveille de super humeur et passe 2 bonnes heures avec Maman. Au programme, câlins, histoires, playmobils et fou-rires.

9h30, petit déjeuner, nous préparons des crêpes, Maman me donne les ingrédients et je fais tout toute seule, je ne suis pas peu fière.

Une fois notre petit déjeuner fini, nous commençons la préparation du sapin de Noël. C’est super drôle et je prends ma mission très au sérieux. 1h30 plus tard, nous avons un magnifique sapin.

Nous prends une petite collation, quelques jeux calmes et Maman me prépare pour la sieste.

Je dors plus de 2h, je fais de gros câlins à Maman en me réveillant.

Petite douche, habillage et direction le centre commercial pour le goûter.

Nous nous arrêtons chez Oberweis pour déguster de délicieux macarons, en ce moment c’est ma gourmandise préférée.

Il est presque 19h et nous faisons un peu de lèche vitrine, repartons avec de jolis chaussons et avons choisi ma tenue de Noël.

20h nous arrivons à la maison, un petit diner léger, et je me prépare pour aller au lit.

Encore quelques câlins, des histoires et des chansons et je suis endormie vers 21h.

Ma nuit sera agitée, je couve quelque chose, je tousse beaucoup et finis par vomir. Heureusement Maman veillent. Rédactrice : Aurélia, ma Maman.

Nos amis (Jérôme, Delphine et leurs 2 garçons Maël et Théo) sont parmi nous jusqu’à mercredi matin. Maman a pris quelques jours de congé pour profiter de leur présence.

Ce matin je me réveille à 7h, la lampe fleur a été remise à l’heure d’hiver. Maman s’occupe de moi… et nous “glandouillons” pas mal ! Elle me fait toute belle, un photographe vient à la crèche se matin pour tirer nos portraits.

A 9h je suis sur place, et comme d’habitude ma journée se passe très bien.

A 18h, tout le monde est là pour venir me chercher. Je fais visiter ma crèche et nous rentrons à la maison. Il fait nuit plus tôt maintenant.

Je commence par une partie de Uno, puis activité Windows Color avec Maël, Théo et nos mamans.

Vers 19h45, le repas est servi, mais la fatigue commence à se faire sentir. Je mets une heure pour manger, mais au dessert, un gâteau Oberweis m’attend.

Chers lecteurs du blog, encore impressionné par les images de notre voyage au Groenland, je viens de participer ici au Luxembourg à une discussion assez «surréaliste» sur le changement climatique que je voudrais partager avec vous. 

1. Le décor : 

Comme annoncé sur notre blog (voir commentaire ci-dessous), la MENSA a organisé une discussion sur le changement climatique, intitulée Réalitéit, sozial wiertschaftlech an politesch Konsequenzen. Les invités étaient « de marque » : Claude Turmes, député « vert » européen, Marcel Oberweis, député CSV au Luxembourg et Francis Massen, professeur de physique au lycée de Diekirch, et le tout modéré par Georges Weyer, membre de la MENSA (on nous a expliqué dès le début de la soirée que pour devenir membre de la MENSA, il fallait faire partie des « 2% des personnes les plus intelligentes » au Luxembourg, test QI à l’appui). J’avais hâte d’assister à une discussion d’un niveau intellectuel élevé et où j’allais certainement sortir avec pleins de nouvelles idées !

2. La discussion :

En guise d’introduction, les trois orateurs ont exposé leurs idées sur le thème:

- M. Oberweis explique que le changement climatique constitue entre autre une question éthique et que nous devons tous prendre nos responsabilités, surtout par rapport à d’autres pays qui subissent les conséquences du changement de plein fouet. Pour lui, “…le changement climatique est aussi un changement de mentalité…”.
- M. Massen se demande si on observe un réel impact négatif et si l’homme a une part de responsabilité dans un éventuel changement climatique. Il fustige ensuite le rapport IPCC et utilise des termes comme « oligarchie » ou « monopole de pensée ».
- M. Turmes explique que la politique a un rôle important à jouer. Elle doit fixer les cadres et surtout identifier les problèmes et trouver des consensus. Il a une vision plus « géopolitique » et explique les conséquences de la croissance des classes moyennes de certains pays émergents comme la Chine ou l’Inde.

Après ces quelques minutes d’introduction, calmes il faut dire, la discussion a viré à une grande «symphonie de chiffres, théories, accusations…». Pendant presque deux heures nous avons assisté à un « débat » qui tournait autour de Gt de CO2, de scientifiques “payés”, de stations de mesures de CO2 à Diekirch qui montrent des variations journalières, de centrales nucléaires, de kWh, pour finir avec des théories de complot !!

3. MON sentiment à la sortie de cette discussion :

À vrai dire, je ne suis presque pas surpris de la tournure que cette discussion a prise. Personne n’a pu déstructurer et restructurer la problématique de ce sujet si complexe (voir commentaire ci-dessous : « deconstructing climate change »). La discussion est partie dans tous les sens, piège classique !!

La soirée a quand-même conforté quelques impressions et réflexions que j’ai pu faire au Groenland ! La notion politique est très importante et les élus, nos représentants, doivent prendre leurs responsabilités (Claude Turmes) à condition d’avoir une vision claire, de fixer le contexte et de définir les acteurs. De plus, chacun de nous peut agir en accord avec sa conscience et doit prendre ses responsabilités (Marcel Oberweis), d’où l’importance par exemple de notre « Tagebuch ». Finalement, je pense que nous vivons dans une société moderne, basée sur le développement de nouvelles technologies, qui doit évoluer, s’adapter et aller vers l’avant tout en gardant un certain respect et une certaine humilité : En pensant aux personnes que j’ai vues au Groenland, je me sentais par moment mal face au niveau de la discussion, qui tournait en rond, en rond, en rond…

Ma nuit a été bonne… sauf que je suis tombée du lit vers 2h du matin. Rien de bien grave, Maman m’a remise dans mon lit et je me suis rendormie immédiatement.

Je me réveille vers 7h, mais je suis fatiguée. Au début de mon déjeuner, je demande d’aller me recoucher, et monte toute seule dans ma chambre.

1/2h plus tard, je suis en pleine forme, re-petit-dej, Maman part au bureau, Papa me donne ma douche et m’accompagne à la crèche pour 9h15.

Maman vient me chercher vers 18h, nous faisons 3/4h de balançoire avec mes copains de crèche, 2 petits anglais, Ashley et Maxy. Nous partons ensuite dîner chez Oberweis. Papa vient nous y rejoindre. Je suis adorable… et trouve les macarons délicieux.

Je suis encore toute excitée quand nous rentrons à la maison. Je ne serai au lit qu’à 20h45. Rédacteur : Patrick-Robin, mon Papa.

Maman a pris un jour de congé aujourd’hui : mes parents ont besoin de choisir quelques meubles, luminaires, rideaux et accessoires.

Je me réveille à 6h30… d’une humeur moyenne. Le temps de me préparer et de déjeuner, il est 8h15 quand Maman me dépose à la crèche.

Mes parents passent la journée dans les magasins de meubles, de déco et de bricolage.

Maman vient me chercher à 17h30, et je l’entraîne vers les balançoires. Nous partons ensuite chez Auchan. Comme je suis sympa, nous commençons par déguster un gâteau chez Oberweis avant d’attaquer les courses.

Au gré des rayons du magasin, les vendeuses m’offrent une saucisse, du raisin et un petit bonbon. Et voilà la solution pour manger à l’oeil : il suffit d’être une petite fille adorable !

Nous sommes de retour à 21h à la maison. Pyjama et brossage de dents termineront ma journée. 1/4h plus tard, je dors. Rédacteur : Patrick-Robin, mon Papa.

There have been a lot of change since I posted part 1 of this topic. It’s down to Clinton and Obama for the Democrats, and McCain for the Republicans. This isn’t news for someone reading shortly after I post, but in six months, a year, ten years, it may not be as easy to remember what happened when.

In the past week, Obama said goodbye to Samantha Power, an adviser who called Mrs. Clinton a “monster,” while Mrs. Clinton said goodbye to Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to ever chosen to run for vice president for saying that Barack Obama is in the presidential race only because he is black. Apologies and accusations continue to ricochet off the sides of campaign vehicles and walls of media.

Something I heard on talk radio (the mighty WGN 720 AM from Chicago) got me to thinking about the prevalence of sniping among the candidates and parties. On a regional level, there was a special election to replace Dennis Hastert (R), Illinois’s 14th District Congressman, for the remainder of his term. Jim Oberweis was the Republican candidate, and Bill Foster was the Democrat. The special election was held last Saturday, March 8, but it’s not over. It will gear up again for the November elections when a candidate will be chosen to serve an entire term. The first part of the campaign was nasty, and the next few months promise to be worse.

Negative campaigning is more than an irritating phenomenon. It’s an insight to how the candidates will handle emotionally-charged challenges when in office. When a candidate’s character and/or message is attacked, do s/he fight back, roll over, or find a middle road? If a foreign prime minister makes negative claims about our president, what should we expect of our leader? Here’s a potential scenario:

King ABC of the Royal Kingdom of the Alphabet (RKA) doesn’t like the American president. ABC holds a news conference to sling buckets of mud. Every slimy smear is based in provable truth. President XYZ used illegal drugs as a young person. As a senator, XYZ voted against sending aid to RKA following a massive tornado outbreak. This resulted in a massive loss of life that could have been prevented with minimal assistance from the mighty USA. As a college student, XYZ openly advocated adopting a communist model to replace the current capitalist structure employed by the USA. Finally, ABC accuses XYZ of pretending to have a beneficial agenda when the true aim is to reshape the nation in an anti-democratic fashion.

How should XYZ respond? King ABC has rather important standing in the international community, and people listen to him. His angry words have the potential to incite bad feeling about XYZ, and many will side with ABC. Do XYZ’s people find dirt on ABC and throw it to the frenzied media? Does XYZ ignore ABC’s comments? Does XYZ attempt to reach out to ABC to find common ground? Does XYZ fly into a rage and threaten sanctions or embargoes, or worse? Does XYZ respond to the accusations in a way meant to explain why they are or aren’t significant issues?

Of course each situation has its unique variables. Of course it depends on the people and issues involved. And of course public opinion is important. Any of the above choices could be utilized in responsible manners. It’s the choice of when, where, and what that makes the difference. How diplomatic is XYZ? Can XYZ stand firm or bend when appropriate? We don’t want a president who will be so rigid that s/he breaks when tested. On the other hand, we also don’t want a president who will bend to other people’s wills when firmness is demanded.

Is political mud slinging unnecessary or inappropriate? I don’t like it any more than the next voter, but I would suggest that it serves a purpose. It’s a facet of an elected official’s service that we often don’t consider. When I go to vote, I will certainly take into consideration the give-and-take between the candidates. No less important, I will want to know if any candidate develops a reputation for being kind, nasty, responsible, snobbish, and so on.

In the Foster-Oberweis campaign, they both agreed to appear for radio interview on the John Williams show in early March. The show was part of the “Hometown Voices” series on WGN radio, broadcasting on remote at a location in the 14th District. Both candidates got caught in traffic. Both candidates did their interviews over the phone. After being interviewed, one candidate chose to move on to the location of their next appearance. The other candidate, although late and already interviewed, chose to arrive on location anyway. Which one showed more respect for his hosts and voters? The negative ads may not demonstrate that respect, but the simple act of showing up as promised spoke volumes. To be sure, his halo wasn’t untarnished, but that choice to show may have acted as restore some of that golden glow. Guess which candidate won the special election.

I’m not an expert. I don’t always get it right when voting (Gov. Blagojevich being my major voting gaff), but I think I have a semi-intelligent read on some politics. I know what I wish for our country, and I can generally choose a candidate who isn’t so bad. I’m not going to say who I plan to vote for come November. I just hope I’m not disappointed, again. Obama halted Clinton’s momentum tonight by winning Wyoming.  I figure inWyoming, they probably wouldn’t be up at 3AM for a phone call either.  The turnout was 9,000 voters.  Huh? I thought this was the year of record Democratic turnout?  I guess not.  Undoubtedly this will lead to more Obama is JFK talk. 

In more disturbing news, we lost a house seat in Illinois.  Dennis Hastert’s old seat went to Bill Foster over Jim Oberweis.  I’m not in that district so I didn’t get to vote, but I never miss the opportunity to enjoy Oberweis’s ice cream and other dairy products.  I have a quart of dulce de leche ice cream in the freezer now and though its got a foreign name its pure American carmely goodness.  Foster is a tax and spend liberal who was in an Oberweis commercial saying “Nothing can’t be improved by throwing money at it”.  He’s also going to try and raise everybody’s taxes by $8,000 per year.  Both candidates spent a lot of money on the election, but I can’t help thinking that the world is sadder somehow that the guy who worked with chemicals I can’t pronounce beat the man who runs a business that produces something pure and wholesome like milk and ice cream.
