So I popped in on the Obey Giant website this morning just to catch up on some of the recent work that I have been missing. 5 years ago I used to buy a print a week off the site and it was fairly easy to get one. Low editions of high quality serigraphs at a great price by an artist from my Alma mater, RISD. I managed to collect a sizable pile of works up until the time Shepard’s book came out and he became a super star. When this happened, a new print for sale would hit the site and be sold out in a split second. It became impossible to get one. There never seemed to be a shortage of them on Ebay though. It was obvious that many of the buyers of these prints were turning them quickly for 3 times the money with ease. I accepted that this was the new market for the work and if I wanted to expand my collection, I would have to shop on Ebay or Ducky Waddles and pay more. Truthfully, in most of these circumstances, the prices were still low enough to be a bargain for what you were getting. So back to today….. I heard that Shepard did a print of Jasper Johns in two colors and was interested in seeing this. I decided to check out the image and could not believe that the print was still available. I snatched one up immediately. Check it out…..

This is surely the best mixtape i’ve heard in a while. I know i like to use superlatives on this blog but i only share stuff i found to be pretty good…

Anyways, the artwork alone make it worth listening. It is designed by Shepard Fairey for his imprint Obey.

This mix features abstract hip-hop, raw and obscure beats ranging from cosmic disco to dark jazzy joints. A real musical trip!

The Gaslamp Killer – I Spit On Your Grave mixtape:

That sounds quite strong, but pretty much the words that came out of my mouth a couple of days ago whilst receiving a hug from our Daughter, as she attempted to distract me from my anger at her refusal to put her pajamas under her pillow.

Now I’m a big fan of hugs, but not when I’ve asked her to do something else.

Thinking about it later though, I can’t help be reminded of 1 Samuel 15:22, where Samuel explains that God doesn’t delight in burnt offerings or sacrifices as much as obedience.

And not only that, but in John 14:15 Jesus says ‘If you love me, Obey my commands.’

It was interesting to have something of God’s view on what it’s like when people come to you with religious offerings whilst ignoring your instruction as to how they should live.

I am sure by now most are familiar with the Barack Obama “Hope” campaign poster and have perhaps heard of the artist responsible for that images and potentially the TROUBLE he landed in for using the original image without permission…

While Shepard Fairey has gained much notoriety and infamy for this incident, the body of work of Fairey has much more to say.

Some time ago, I began seeing the street art of Shepard Fairy all over Boston without realizing it was the work of an established artist.  While moving around the city I would see these wonderfully expressive antiestablishment/ antiwar/anticonformity/antityrany images in PROPAGANDA style Reds and Blacks on hidden but prominantly located spaces.

As time has passed, I have become much more familiar with the larger body of work of Fairey and I can say without a doubt that I am a fan.  I am not a fan because I agree with the ideas he expresses and the message he wished to convey but merely because he expresses those ideas.  Fairy has married his TrueFace talent for graphic designe and illustration with his ideas and out has poured this wonderful works of self expression.

From his early “Andre the Giant has a Posse” street art Campaign to defending himself in court for turning a seemingly mundane photograpgh into what is undoubtly one of the most memorable images of our time…Frank Shepard Fairy is OBEYing his TrueFace…

Obey have showed us their latest print designed by Shepard Fairey based on an image of painter, Jasper Johns, taken by photographer, Michael Tighe. There are two different colours, each limited to 450, and will release for $55 on December 10th through Obey’s website.

Obey ’s Erin Wingnall and NYC’s Abby Moriarty  of Catbreath unite their creative ideas into a dope collaboration collection now available at Obey clothing online.

The oversized t-dress and patterned leggings are my favorites.

This last weekend was an art event that comes down to Miami every December, ART BASEL. This is one of the biggest street art events in the world and we are privileged to have come to our city. I went out to check out the work and watch the people paint a couple of the days and got some pictures of some of the work that was going on this year. A lot of local artist paint and even some very well known artist such as Obey even come down to do some work on the street of Miami. We have all seen the ads on the internet. From youtube to myspace, it isnt hard to find ads all over about working from. The ads usually say something like “Google is Hiring” or “Get Paid 700/hr Working From Home!!”. Well the maker of these ads are in some deeeeep trouble. Google has just filed a lawsuit against the company for using their name and Google logo. Don’t you just love seeing corruption getting pwned by justice? I mean these guys have made thousands of dollars off of innocent people. How? However, after you pay the 1.95 the company that made the ad helps themselves to a lil piece of your cake. Every month the company was taking money out of people’s credit card accounts, killing credit scores and ruining lives. You know they say abput being too good to be true.

The "Obey Eye"

This is a VERY sarcastic print by Shepard Fairey, the artist/designer/entrepreneur behind the “Obey” label. His art and clothing designs usually have a strong but positive meaning behind them. From Politics to pop culture this guy has it all. This particular piece (in my eyes) symbolizes blind devotion to the government and a “believe everything you see” mentality. Note how the diamond shape is over the left eye symbolizing masonry in the government and among the top 1% of the nation (i.e Jay-z’s dynasty sign is always over the left eye). Either way you put it Shepard is a genius and you can bet your mother’s sweet ass I will have more of his work posted. For more info about the print and Obey click the picture!

Ok so the fairey has been fairly mainstream for a minute now, but i think this is pushing the boundaries a little……. tell me what you think!?, His design will be on program book, telecast tickets, promotional poster, and 2010 GRAMMY Nominee CD.
