There was anger in Texas. He could hear them coming up the stairs. Sitting still on a rocking chair, he cocked his head to the side cracking his neck hollow. After he shot himself in the knee, he screamed in agony. They opened the door to find him, writhing in pain on the ground. They were confused, however, at his actions. Although he was bleeding through the carpet from his knee, he was clutching his stomach.

Paul Baker always thought that simple people gave simple answers, but never thought about actions and perception.

We marched to the blood bank, demanding satisfaction. We left with a hole in arm and $50. I always wanted to know what backwards-ass company was using my blood for whatever backwards-ass experiment they bought blood for. The company bought my blood. The company bought my blood for a price which would make my $50 the factory price. A pint of my blood, one tenth of my liquid life, was still profitable after they paid me $50.

Paul Baker had a liter of his blood taken only to take it back, then paint with it and then sell the painting for $50.

He shot himself for the scar. He painted for the practice. He shot himself for the scar. He painted for the practice. He shot himself for the scar.
The moon was full and the tunes were obscure. I knew it was going to be a night to remember when Ed opened up with the extended mix of Darkroom’s “San Paku.” And the night just kept getting better with rare extended mixes, and a great tune by Robert Smith when he collaborated with a group called The Glove. Excellent soul-candy indeed.

Be sure to tune in to Ed and his “I dare you to name that tune” 80’s Retrospect show on CFRC-FM from 8 pm until 10 pm on Tuesday nights. Ed takes requests by phone: (613) 533-CFRC (2372) or email: retrospectcfrc at yahoo dot ca. Indulge yourself in some “80’s Music that doesn’t suck.” I guarantee die-hard 80’s New Wave/post-punk fans will not be disappointed.

Our popular culture is becoming so dense and complicated that in order to know one thing, one has to

Our popular culture is becoming so dense and complicated that in order to know one thing, one has to know five other things that have already happened. The inter-connectedness of our world makes almost everything point back to or relate to almost everything else. I wrote the following note on Facebook two and half years ago and I think it is time to have it shared with all of the world. It is close to impossible to live a day in our world and not hear at least one reference to pop culture. So, in order to make sure we can communicate effectively in this age, I offer the following:

“Making Obscure References”

One of the truly great joys of life is having the ability to make a timely, poignant Obscure Reference. I believe that our generation needs an outline, a guideline to direct the pop culture references that will be produced by us for use among ourselves and for our children to never fully understand.

An Obscure Reference can run the gambit from an inside joke between friends to an easy way for people in a particular field to find the Referencer legitimate (or at least interesting). The purpose of this short study is to provide a base upon which further discussion on Obscure Reference usage can be built.

Please consider the following points when filtering through any items that you might consider for usage as an Obscure Reference:

I. Period of Time where Obscure Reference originates- The older the reference, the more educated you might seem. Whereas, a more recent Obscure Reference may make you seem more culture savvy and “cool.” Example: An Obscure Reference to an ancient Roman or Greek poet or a Muslim scholar from 10th century Baghdad will make you sound smart and well read. On the other hand, a reference to Transformers or a Fresh Prince episode could endear you to a younger crowd.

II. The Audience- An Obscure Reference about a movie or song that only you and one of your close friends from Middle School saw or heard would not go over well in a lecture or speech in front of hundreds or even dozens of strangers (even if said friend happened to be in the audience). Example: Winning over the future or current In-Laws can be tough work, especially if normal, effective conversation is difficult to produce. One method to counteract this is to pepper your speech patterns with references (Obscure or otherwise) that their parents will understand. Throwing in an 8-track or phonograph reference (depending on age of In-Laws, See Note I) can make you seem concerned about them and the time when they grew up.

III. Source of Obscure Reference- Among music conscience circles, trying to “out-obscure” someone with an unheard of band or singer will get you mad props, if you can manage to one-up the 1980’s band from nowhere that no one has heard of except for your Obscure Reference foe. This is a classic example of going too far back to reach and pull an Obscure Reference out of the mists of history. If you are searching for an Obscure Reference and the best you can think to use is a drawing you made in 3rd grade that your mom loved and wanted to put on the fridge, do not use this reference.

IV. Quotes- While quotations may be the most available and well known way to make an Obscure Reference, please take a couple of considerations to mind when thinking of using a quote: 1) Make sure you know what the quote means: Pity can be appropriate when a person mis-uses a quote from a drunken celebrity tirade when the topic of conversation is East Asian Economics. 2) Know the person who originated the quote (or at least used it popularly): While a mis-used quote can deserve an apology, a quote attributed to the wrong originator can be an Obscure Reference career-ender. However, a very gutsy Obscure Referencer can get away with an incorrectly attributed quote if the quote is obscure enough. 3) A good quote can bulk up conversation with importance and an aura of study by the presenter, but remember that quotes can not take the place of solid personal opinion, assessment or analysis. Please note that often quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.”

V. Use your discretion- Just like insubordination in High School is the catch-all for bad behavior not listed in the rules, your personal discretion should be the final step to check before using an Obscure Reference. All of the above mentioned notes could be used and the reference could still go over sourly.

Well, I hope that this short study has been helpful in your never-ending quest to find the perfect Obscure Reference for whenever you might need it. A good comparison for an Obscure Reference coming out exactly when you need it can be found in this paraphrase from the powerful words of El Guapo: “Jefe, you do not understand women. You cannot force open the petals of a flower. When the flower is ready, it opens itself up to you.” Forcing an Obscure Reference where it does not work just causes anguish for yourself and all that encounter your poor Reference.

Today’s freakshow obscure forgotten horror film is ‘The Baby’.

Made in 1973, It’s camper than 7 pink tents but still creepy as all hell.

From the back of the DVD:

“Ann Gentry is a social worker that has dealt with some of the toughest,
Most bizarre cases.
She thought she’d seen it all…Until Now.
Arriving at the house of her new client,
She makes a shocking discovery:
A full-grown man dressed and treated as if he were still an infant!
In fact, The entire dysfunctional family seems demented -
And Ann becomes determined to save ‘The Baby’.

On the front of the DVD it reads:
‘Horror is his formula’.

Hahaha!

That, and the campness aside,
It’s actually a very good film with a nothing short of shocking ending that I guarantee you will not see coming.

I caught this film for the first time in the 80’s when I happened to turn the TV on after midnight.

Too young.
I remember standing in front of the TV freaking out as I watched this scene:

Seems to only be available from the U. S. of A. for the time being but it’s worth tracking down.

Here’s a band that has been unfairly derided, criticized, and just downright ignored. This is

Here’s a band that has been unfairly derided, criticized, and just downright ignored. This is a classic case of being on the wrong side of the “media darling” fence and suffering for it. My pet peeve is music “critics” and radio station business suits who dictate to me what I should like and what I should listen to. The upshot of that nonsense is simply having missed out on some tremendously gifted 80’s bands and artists in favor of the flavor-of-the-month mainstream dreck like Cher, Michael Jackson, and (*gag me with a fork*) Madonna, just to name a few of the usual suspects.

When I first seriously started to listen to the Alarm, it was a good 20 years after they released their first LP. I couldn’t recall hearing any of their songs during the 80’s in the southeast region of the US. Back then, if it wasn’t the aforementioned crap on a stick passed off as classic 80’s music, heavy metal, or the requisite “you live in the south, so here’s some twangy country” pablum, it simply wasn’t aired. Occasionally, I would catch a glimmer of something really good on early MTV, before music politics and money-based bottom line drove that venue into the ground faster than you could say “AOR.”

But, I digress; back to The Alarm. Comprised of Mike Peters (vocals, guitars, harmonica), Dave Sharp (guitars), Eddie Macdonald (bass), and Nigel Twist (drums), the band formed in Wales in 1981, evolved from a punk band named The Toilets that had been kicking around since 1977. One of the reasons this band has been unfairly criticized is due to their chance meeting with Ian Wilson, then U2’s manager. Wilson liked what he heard and became The Alarm’s manager as well, arranging a show with The Alarm as the opening act for U2. Several more appearances supporting U2 were born from this success.

Two years later, The Alarm became the opening act on U2’s US tour. In my humble opinion, the close proximity to U2 both in sharing a stage and a manager led to the constant assessment of how they stood up to U2. Rather than stand on their own merits, the ubiquitous comparisons were a lazy way for critics to find a baseline for what they were writing.

Do yourself a favor: Listen to The Alarm with an open mind and remove the U2 connection entirely from the equation. What you will hear is a great 80’s band who could more than stand their own against other tremendous bands of the day including Big Country and yes, even U2. It’s a good thing I believe in the philosophy of “better late than never.” Otherwise, given the limited on-air music selection deep in the bowels of the southeast US, I would have lived my entire life without hearing some of the greatest bands/ artists the 80’s had to offer, including The Alarm.

First of all, I have to say – this is my 100th post since relocating to WordPress. It has been a great trip and I want to thank everyone who has visited. Last night’s show put my tune ID’ing skills to complete shame. Ed reminded us why he is the absolute master of obscure – the rare tunes just kept spinning, one after another. That’s the way we like ‘em. Thank you, Ed.

Be sure to tune in to Ed and his “just try and guess *this* one” 80’s Retrospect show on CFRC-FM from 8 pm until 10 pm on Tuesday nights.

Obscure
PlayStation 2

Obscure
Lá, pegue a lanterna, a arma e a fita.

No escritório, você encontrará Stan.
Pegue-as e vá embora. Lá dentro, pegue o Disco, a Sticky Tape o Energy Drink.
Enfrente mais alguns inimigos e use a Box of Fuses.
Anfiteatro
Lá dentro, pegue a munição para a Shotgun e use o Reel of Film 23 no Projetor.

Derrote o inimigo, pegue a munição e saia.
Lá dentro, pegue a carta no chão.

Pegue o First Aid Kit e vá embora.

Dentro do banheiro, procure o First Aid Kit.
Lá, pegue o Reel of Film 24, a lanterna e uma estátua.
Agora, você estará a caminho do segundo jardim.
Ignore o inimigo e pegue a munição no chão.
Enfrente o mutante, pegue o Energy Drink e o First Aid Kit. Vá embora e desça as escadas.
Na cela, você encontra o First Aid Kit e a alavanca.

Yes, that’s Rob with a “b,” Stuart with a “u.” Let’s get that straight before we embark on a journey

Yes, that’s Rob with a “b,” Stuart with a “u.” Let’s get that straight before we embark on a journey that spans three decades and blows the lid off of the electro/synth/industrial music powder keg.

Not long ago, I featured an article on the Toronto-based band Slave To The SQUAREwave, followed by a review of their latest smashing release, The Money Shot. I also ran a Criminally Underrated piece on another Canadian 80’s band I felt had not received their well-deserved share of the spotlight called Vis-à-Vis. At the time, I had no earthly clue that there was a vital connection between these two amazingly talented bands. That connection is Rob Stuart.

Rob forwarded me a list of his musical stats and an audio collection of his music from the past nearly 30 years. After listening to the music throughout much of this week while toiling away at work, I have two words to describe what I heard – “blown away.” Let me put it this way: If you are as big a fan of synthesizer-fueled music as I am, there is no better aural pleasure than I have been treated to this past week. Rob Stuart is a master at what he does, whether it is writing, performing, or collaborating on music. I had thought my synthesizer idol Gary Numan had provided me with all the electronic music I needed to keep me happy the rest of my days. I could not have been more wrong. In fact, there was a cover version of Numan’s Films included with Rob’s audio collection that is every bit as good, if not better than, the original.

Rob began his serious foray into electronica in 1980 as part of a band called The Plastic Omniums. The band’s line-up looked like this: Rob Stuart (string machine, vocals), Joseph Podlovics, (synthesizer [Roland SH-09], CompuRhythm), John Parry, (synthesizer [Arp Odyssey Model 2800]), and Clifford Podlovics (Teac reel-to-reel tape deck, effects). The band enjoyed a couple of live performances and some unreleased studio recordings before calling it quits.

Next, Rob was a part of Vis-à-Vis from 1982-1984. At that time, the band’s line-up included Rob Stuart (synthesizers, bass guitar), Rude Van Steenes (Vocals), and Kurt LaPorte (guitar, vocals). The band produced many unreleased studio recordings and had several live performances. Vis-à-Vis went on to re-form minus Rob, and ended up releasing two LPs in 1986-87.

Ear Candy was the next musical project up. It consisted of Rob Stuart (synthesizers, production), Eric Kofler (synthesizers, programming, engineering), Andrew McNeil (synthesizers), and Bruce Bentley (guitars, vocals). Strictly a studio band, they enjoyed one EP release titled Self Defence (1986). Eric Kopfler and Andrew McNeil were replaced with Tom Bentley (drums) and James (vocals) for the remainder of Ear Candy’s lifetime, 1987-88. A double-sided 45 rpm vinyl record, “Don’t Let My Heart Slip Away/Don’t Push Me,” was released.

Rob was involved in a simultaneous project while with Ear Candy. Described as “improvisational ambient,” the group was named Silent Green and produced a 60-minute cassette entitled Euphoria. For more information, check them out on MySpace.

Besides Slave To The SQUAREwave, Rob’s most longstanding and ambitious project to date is a group known as Electronic Dream Factory (E.D.F.). Started in 1986, E.D.F. is still going strong today. Using the information provided, here is a breakdown of E.D.F. personnel over the years:

Rob Stuart – Synthesizers, Programming, Production, Vocals
Greg Fraser – Synthesizers, Sequencing, Engineering (1989 to 1991)
Rob Tenant – Drums (Live band 1991 to 1993)
Max – Guitar (Live Band 1991 to 1993)
Emerich Donath – Bass Guitar (Live Band 1991 to 1992)
Rudi Van Steenes – Guest Vocal, Simmons SDS-V Percussion (Live Band 1991 to 1992)

E.D.F. Discography:

1989 – “E.D.F – Self titled cassette” (Since been re-mastered to CD)
1992 – “Drama Dream” 16 song CD (Indiscreet Sounds)
1994 – “Number 3” 16 song CD (Indiscreet Sounds) Distributed by The Record Peddlar
2005 – “Patient Number 152” Double CD (Indiscreet Sounds)
2006 – “Remix-Remaster-Remake” Best of E.D.F compilation including re-mastered material plus new tracks (Indiscreet Sounds)
2009 – “The Haas Effect” New full length CD release featuring a unique blend of ambient, space, chill and electronica (Indiscreet Sounds)

As if this wasn’t enough, Rob Stuart has also assisted Rude Van Steenes, Terence Gowan, and a duo called The Cynix in the capacities of producer, engineer, songwriter, and synth-player extraordinaire in numerous studio projects. All of these projects, including recordings for E.D.F. and Ear Candy, have produced songs used in movie and TV soundtracks, advertisements, and international airplay.

Criminally underrated? Absolutely. Rob Stuart has got to be one of the hardest-working, consistently productive, multi-talented musicians that the world has hardly ever heard of. Between E.D.F. and Slave To The SQUAREwave, concurrent groups of diverse, yet outstanding music, odds are in favor of the elusive break that will catapult him and his solid compositions into the limelight. Better sooner than later.

Check out Electronic Dream Factory’s MySpace page. For more information on obtaining copies of the music mentioned in this article, feel free to leave a comment using your current email address and I will gladly forward your requests on to Rob Stuart.

a reservation for the common folk
just to take his turn
and for the sake of homage tokes
from past and present urns
spaces places
never meant a thing

he’ll carve a pumpkin with a spoon
just to hear you sing.

Everything a blur at the moment.

Somehow all, in it senselessness,

Makes sense.

The light turns to obscurity and moons sprout from Aurora’s mouth.

Jackals cry ‘kaw-kaw’ from the branches of the rawboned trees

And I swim through stone in the rugged mountains.

I am free

And what it means to be free

Bursts from my pores in colored fancy.

I glide-paint my rainbows in drag-star fashion

Down the phosphorescent runways

Of these things we call life.

And those that speak of reality

Idly sit by

As the currents of wish-wash babble

Rule their lives

And I long to paddle up

Rolling hills of lubricious sand

To hazard the hope that anything is

Possible.

Stomach crawling with opposable thumbs. Pastor lifeless and congregation numb. Wrists hanging past your guilt for guilt. Let the stations rumble as the blood is spilt. A knob is turned and a martyrdom hoist. Worshipers worship but not out of choice. Sanguine son and embittered father figure. Happiness is to warm gun, as you are to trigger.
