At this point, I had commissioned a recent U of M graduated named Dave to build my website.  As excited and impressed as I was, I really had no idea what I was doing.  When Dave sent me his first rendering of the website, I remember thinking how thrilled I was that there was someone actually building from the blueprints I had dreamt up.  In hindsight, I realize that there is no way I could have used the website he had put together, but this was still the first time my dream had become something more than a business plan.

During this process, my biggest concern was getting hosting for the site.  After all, Dave was a one man operation, so I couldn’t expect him to host the site.  So, I did some research, picked a hosting company, and we were off and running.

About a week later, I received an e-mail from Dave.  The company that had given him his internship decided to extend the program for another three months, which would likely turn into a full-time position.  He told me that he had thought about it, and he was going to take the extension.  They would be giving him a salary, benefits, and insurance- I couldn’t compete with that.  I completely understand his decision, and perhaps I would have done the same thing, but without a developer, I was back at square one.

I told Dave to keep in touch; maybe we would work together once again in the future.  Luckily, Dave was very kind and understanding.  He helped me draft up the qualifications for a website developer job posting.  Not that I knew what to do with them, but it was a start.

A single tree standing in the entrance to a modern Tokyo house provides a marvelous contrast between the traditional and the new. The beauty of the single tree and the clean lines of the boxy concrete home create a uniquely Japanese feeling, or what I introduced recently as wafu modern (和風モダン) in relation to Kuma Kenga’s new Nezu Museum and tea house.

The intricately pruned pine tree evokes hundreds of years of Japanese garden design almost single-handedly. The pairing suggests a forward-looking aesthetic that remembers and revitalizes traditional culture elements.

From an ecological perspective, the single tree and minimal shrubs provides very little habitat. This quiet cul-de-sac suffers a typical Tokyo over-abundance of pavement, which is a certain pathway to Tokyo Bay pollution from storm runoff and an obstacle to insect and plant life that could feed and shelter bees, birds and other urban wildlife.

Still, the effect of the tree is all the more dramatic against the excess of hardscape. I also would regret if urban ecology became a quantitative calculation of efficiencies and benefits. There must be a place for not only traditional culture but also the type of human care and aesthetic appreciation manifest in this stylized pine tree.

The power to hold on in spite of everything, to endure, this is the quality of a winner. Your greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time you fail.

It’s your constant and determined effort that will eventually break down all resistance and sweep away all the barriers before you. Persistence means taking pains to overcome every obstacle, to do all that’s necessary to reach your goal.

I have a fond affection for the Delaware Water Gap, the place where the Kittatinny Mountains were sliced through, not by machinery, not by explosives, but by a stream of water that ran over it for thousands of years.

This was before the Revolutionary War, before George Washington, even before Christopher Columbus. It was before the land had Anglicized names. Maybe before it had Indian names. Way back.

The river now marks the boundary between the State of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey, where I grew up.

My father took us there on a Sunday drive and his telling of how the Gap was formed captured my imagination. Water did THIS?

It’s also a place where he, at 22, took his parents for a Sunday drive, navigating the twists and turns of the early road that ran along the river. But when news that Pearl Harbor had been attacked came on the car radio, it did not seem right to be away from home, so they headed back.

I am fondly attached to the Gap as a reminder of the power of consistent applied pressure in a single direction.

This truth applies to both good and bad. The Book of Proverbs likens a nagging wife to the steady dripping of rain (27:15). They both wear things down. The spirit of many a man has been ground into the dirt by a wife who simply will not let up.

But for me it has been a most positive application, an encouragement, when I know the direction to go, to keep moving toward it in small ways.

Among the “swept aside” things of the last year has been regular, structured work on my Spanish. I could no longer spend 20-30 minutes every weekday on it. Instead, on those rare occasions when my brain was in a state to pay attention (a not-to-be-counted-upon commodity), I’d put on a Spanish-language podcast in the background. And now, in the last few weeks, I’ve been able to return to longer dialogues. And holy smokes, I understand! A lot!

Drip-drip-drip.

Alas, the Perfectionist in me discounts the drip-drip-drip approach. She is always ready to toss out any endeavor that can’t be done in full with immediacy, all obstacles plowed through. For her, it’s either instant gratification or a complete loss of heart. One or the other. No in-between. Poor girl. I’m regularly having to drive her to rehab. She does not get it, that:

Children are guided
Homes are made
Impossibles are overcome
Stories are written
Almost never
Instantly
But
By an overall unrelenting movement
In the desired direction
And
Perhaps more importantly
When missteps are made
Which they surely will be
Getting up and going at it again
Every time.

Un récent article publié par Le Figaro pourrait faire voir d’un angle nouveau, la crise gouvernementale que traverse le Liban, avec en toile de fond, l’irritation israélienne.

Le Figaro a en effet publié dans son édition Web, un article signé par George Malbrunot, qui nous apprend que le matériel d’interception et d’écoute livré depuis 2006 par la France aux Forces de Sécurité Intérieure a servi au démantèlement des réseaux d’espionnages israéliens.

“Inutile de dire que ces livraisons de matériel sensible ont vivement mécontenté Israël. Publiquement, rien n’a transpiré. Mais en coulisses, l’État hébreu a exprimé son courroux aux autorités françaises.”

Hors de tels systèmes ne peuvent servir qu’avec la coopération du Ministère des Télécoms. Il n’y a donc un pas à accuser les anciens tenants des ministères de l’intérieur, Sabeh et Fatfat et de tes télécommunications Marwan Hamadé, d’avoir consciemment “oubliés” de faire leur boulot.

“Le Hezbollah n’en a pas fait des tonnes. Il préfère garder le dossier qu’il ressortira le moment venu.» Contre ses ennemis intérieurs. Classique en matière d’espionnage.“

Peut-on voir la le revirement de Walid Joumblatt qui craint de payer lourdement un prix politique à cette affaire via ses collaborateurs proches comme Hamadé, ce dernier ayant été déjà par le passé, accusé d’avoir demandé au cour de la guerre de juillet 2006, à l’ambassadeur US à l’époque en poste au Liban, Jeffrey Feltman, l’assassinat du secrétaire général du Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah, et d’avoir tenté par la suite en 2007 de démanteler le réseau de télécommunication militaire du Hezbollah, provoquant la crise politique de l’époque. Marwan Hamadé, bien que député, a disparu aujourd’hui de l’information politique, coïncidence ou pas…

Il revient peut-être à Ziad Baroud en coopération avec Gébran Bassil, la palme d’avoir mis aux arrêts les collaborateurs de Tel Aviv au Liban.

“Mais l’efficacité des limiers libanais finira par inquiéter leurs ennemis. En janvier 2008, le capitaine Wissam Eid, responsable des écoutes au sein des FSI, est tué, lorsque son convoi explose sur une bombe à Beyrouth.”

L’article pose également la question de l’assassinat du caporal Wissam Eid, sans toutefois formellement accuser Tel Aviv.

Cet article fait voir d’un angle nouveau la venue de Kouchner au Liban, la semaine dernière, mais également la crise politique non pas interne malgré ce que prétendent certains partis au Liban mais externe avec l’irruption de nouvelles ingérences au Liban au niveau d’un ministère devenu clé pour la sécurité du Pays des cèdres. Cela pose également des interrogations sur le rôle de dénégation à ce que Bassil obtienne ce ministère au sein du prochain gouvernement, notamment via les voix des politiciens généralement proches d’un autre allié d’Israël au Liban, les USA, avec le refus de Geagea à ce que le CPL puisse faire opérer le ministère des Télécoms.

L’affaire n’est donc pas libanaise, mais va au delà du Liban avec un bras de fer entre les tenants d’une souveraineté réelle via les services sécuritaires libanais et ceux qui oeuvrent pour ceux qui sont techniquement et depuis 1948 toujours en guerre contre le Liban.

Jean d’Angely n’avait plus montré son vrai visage, celui d’un champion, depuis près d’un un an. Le champion de Frederic Danloux, ménagé depuis toujours avait déçu au cours de ses derniers parcours de steeple chase, au point que l’on pouvait douter de sa capacité à jouer un jour régulièrement dans la cour des grands. Sauf qu’un champion ne rend jamais les armes.

Hier à Auteuil, pour son premier parcours en haies (c’est un steeple chaser né) à l’occasion du Prix Claude Le Lorrain (listed), il est venu à bout du doué Cyrlight et du très en forme Gaelic Ocean. Pas une sinécure, surtout qu’il s’agissait d’une rentrée après 6 mois d’absence.

A l’issue d’une course menée à un train fort modéré et logiquement terminée sur un sprint de quelques hectomètres, Jean d’Angely a fait parler sa pointe de vitesse et démontré beaucoup de courage à la lutte sous la poigne de Jacques Ricou.

J’ai beaucoup aimé la course de Cyrlight, qui a très patiemment attendu en queue de peloton avant d’être lancé par Cyrille Gombeau. Une tactique visiblement délibérée destinée à redonner du moral au cheval et dont je pense qu’elle devrait porter ses fruits dans l’avenir pour ce super cheval qui sait depuis longtemps “lire et écrire”.
