(photo: NBCphilly) “It was a busy Saturday for Occupy Philly. Members met at the Thomas Paine Plaza at 9 a.m. and were then shuttled to 27th and Sterner Streets to partake in a cleanup project. The group also held a launch party at noon at Thomas Paine for “a day of celebration as we launch the newly formed ‘Free Speech Demonstration Space’ at Thomas Paine Plaza.” Finally, at 2 p.m., group members marched from 15th and Market to Independence Hall. The group vowed to continue their movement against corporate greed and economic inequality despite the demise of their tent city at City Hall, and they challenged the city’s assessment that their eviction occurred in a peaceful and orderly fashion.   Police raided the group’s nearly 2-month-old tent city early Wednesday, and 52 people were arrested in the aftermath of the raid, as dozens of protesters began roving through downtown. Mayor Michael Nutter and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey have praised the officers involved for avoiding major problems like those that have come in other cities, saying they showed a tremendous amount of restraint and professionalism.   City officials also announced Friday that the protests had cost the city a little more than $1 million, about 90 percent of that in police overtime. Gwen Snyder, one of the group’s leaders, said some members will lobby to reform in Washington, D.C., next week. However, they have not decided whether to apply for another permit in Philadelphia.   “We are still strong, stronger than ever and galvanized by the events of the eviction,” she said. “Eviction is not an ending. It is an escalation.”~Read More: NBCPhilly@Occupyphilly: https://twitter.com/#!/OccupyPhillyOn Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OccupyPhiladelphia

(Gettyimages/washingtonpost) “Hundreds of riot police flooded into downtown Los Angeles andPhiladelphia early Wednesday to clear anti-Wall Street protest camps in mostly peaceful operations that saw dozens arrested. The latest moves targeting the two-month-old protest movement against corporate greed and inequality came days after announced eviction deadlines and did not bring the running clashes and tear gas that have marked previous raids. In Los Angeles, dozens of officers in helmets formed lines to seal off an area around the City Hall park camp, while others began arresting around a dozen protesters and leading them away in plastic handcuffs. Police announced over loudspeakers that they were declaring an unlawful assembly shortly after midnight (0800 GMT Wednesday), calling on people to leave the area “immediately” or face arrest and possible other action. After a couple of hours of anticipation about where the police would come from, a mass of helmeted LAPD officers burst out of the City Hall doors while others began arresting people on the lawn outside. But after the initial burst of action the calm returned, as police gently pushed the crowds out of the central protest area and began arresting a stream of people and dismantling tents. By 2:00 am (1000 GMT) the situation appeared to be completely under control. “It went as well as we could have expected,” LAPD chief Charlie Beck was quoted as saying by the LA Times. The CNS news agency earlier said that rubber bullets had been fired during the initial confrontation, but later dropped the report. The operation got under way two days after a midnight Sunday (0800 GMT Monday) deadline set by LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to clear the camp, which has been in place since October 1. “We have taken a measured approach to enforcing the park closure because we have wanted to give people every opportunity to leave peacefully,” the mayor said in a statement on Wednesday. “Once the park is cleared, it will be repaired and returned to all Angelenos to exercise their First Amendment rights,” he added, referring to the US constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and assembly. Hundreds of protesters — up to 500 according to one estimate — had been congregating in the area when the police action began, according to an AFP photographer on the scene. Earlier some 30 buses carrying riot police arrived from a staging area at Dodgers’ Stadium, a few miles from City Hall. Officials said some 1,200 officers overall were involved in the operation. At around the same time as the Los Angeles operation, riot police converged on a similar Occupy Wall Street camp in the eastern city of Philadelphia, clearing a tent camp and setting off an hours-long march through downtown.”~Read More: RawStory Over 1,400 police officers were involved in OccupyLA raids and 200+ protesters were arrested. 50+ protesters from OccupyPhilly were arrested. According to the OccupyPhilly FB page At least one protester from Philly was injured by a police officer’s horse and was taken to the ER with a broken toe.

“Almost two weeks ago, 21 Occupy Wall Street protesters decided to take the movement on the road, in a march from New York’s Zuccotti Park to the White House. Their goal: to spread the movement to the 12 cities and small towns they would pass through along the way, and to protest the supercommittee’s likely decision to retain Bush tax cuts “for the rich,” or “one percent.” The protesters embarked on the 231-mile-trek with a $3,000 check from Occupy Wall Street. But the marchers soon found they didn’t need the money, as they received donations of food and cash, cigarettes and deodorant from local residents and passersby. Occupy movements also sprang up or grew larger in their wake in places such as New Brunswick and Trenton, N.J. While some of the original 21 marchers dropped out because of missing toenails, shin splints or fevers, new marchers have since joined, so that more than twice as many protesters will arrive in Washington Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Occupiers intend to hold a “day of action,” to shut down part of the city in protest of the failure by 12 lawmakers to reach a deal that would ease the tax burden on the “99 percent.”~Read More: The Washington Post
