I feel sufficiently winded, like the entire life of me has been knocked out of my system, where ever

I feel sufficiently winded, like the entire life of me has been knocked out of my system, where everything I touch turns to stone, and I can never find rest in this blasted world.

It’s a story about Off-peak cars and coupons, and I never thought that it would change the way I look at life.

I’m generally a good person, pretty law abiding, I obey the law where I can, because I think that they’re there for a reason. A more orderly society, a more civil society, maybe making the world a better place to live in. You can ask my peers, I’m always indicating, stick to my lanes, usually not speeding.. etc.

But the law is unforgiving, and you only need to find yourself on the wrong side of it, whether with intention to break it, or accidentally flaunted, the law does not let you off scott free on a case by case basis.

Just today, at about 5 in the evening, I was stopped by a traffic officer for a routine spot check, he wanted to make sure that my off-peak car had the proper off-peak coupon to go along with it for the day. To my horror, he told me that today’s date was the 27th of August 2009, but I had accidentally torn 28th August 2009. Just like that, I was busted for a misdemeanor I had no intention of committing. He took down my particulars, and I didn’t really argue my case there and then. The officer was doing his job, and I knew the shite I was in, because I’m well aware of the conditions I’m allowed to drive my car in during weekdays.

I now face a fine of $5,000, hopefully less.. but it’s still a substantial amount even if they brought it down. From what I know.. first time offenders are lucky if they get away with a $2,000 fine. I’m absolutely flabbergasted that I could have made such a mistake.. and heartbroken.

I’m heartbroken because I just stopped working, and I was looking forward to a good break with my last paycheck, some bonus from the gigs I’ve been doing, and maybe the odd job or two. My heart is absolutely shattered, and I feel so forsaken, so downright unlucky because there is absolutely NO REWARD for the past two years I’ve been working, never taking a good break, like how I used my leave last year to go on a mission trip to East Timor, and I’ve only had pockets of long weekends to recuperate a little. A lot of my spare time goes into music that does not pay, or for the past two years, serving alongside in church, that takes up my time, with no monetary reward, maybe a spiritual reward.. but that’s not exactly a liquid asset right now.

As it is, my last paycheck was supposed to tide me through comfortably until I figure out what I want to do with my life, and then this happens. Off all things, one of two things may happen. I’m definitely going get fined, even if the judge goes lenient on me. If it’s the $2,000 fine, every cent that I’ve earned for myself in the past month goes down the drain. If it’s the $5,000 fine, I MIGHT find myself in debt, or having to reach into my life savings, which are supposed to be what it says it is.. savings. I might just find my savings pillow a lot smaller than I prefer having.

But basically, everything seems to have fraught nothing. All my toil for the past two years become meaningless this very instant, the moment the letter from the Land Transport Authority finds its way to my home. All my years of obeying traffic laws, putting my weekday coupons correctly, all my goodwill, paying for petrol.. everything.. comes to naught.

There is no rest, no recuperation, no reward for me in this life. Today is the day, that I truly see what life on this earth really is. Meaningless. It’s no longer just a bible verse.. (Ecc 1:1-3), today I experience first hand what it’s like to have everything taken away from you.. not in the sense of life, health, family or friend. But my one priority, my one goal, one plan to live right now, has been taken away from me. And the road back to it, will be painful toil.

And I suppose I can understand a little bit more, the hopelessness in this world. Whether we’re rich or poor, healthy or unhealthy, the utter banality of life becomes a stark reality to me this day.

And I am sort of angry, I usually pray in my mind, “Lord, why do these things happen?” But today, I had to vocalise it, I had to say it out loud in my car. “Lord, why do bad things happen to good people?” And though I ask, I have no real answer yet, and though I think I can be allowed to be angry.. strangely.. I find myself wondering if this was how Job felt?

I really feel that life has always made a mockery out of me. I finish my studies in Perth, and got myself embargoed because I made a mistake with my student visa. I quit my job, hoping to have a good brake, and a traffic offence I accidentally make, takes all my hard earned money away from me. I could’ve been an officer during NS, but an injury took me out. It’s like, the potential is always there, but something metaphysical gets in the way, something beyond my control.. it rears its ugly head into my life, and mocks me. Mocks me as it pushes me down, laughs at me when my knees are scraped, kicks me when I’m lying there.. heckling away, telling me to not bother getting up, he’ll always come round and shove me down again. Don’t bother.. don’t even bother trying.

Despite all this, maybe as some good in my life.. God’s hardwired me in a way that I could never blame him for the bad things that happen in my life. Not by any merit of myself, I just know, intrinsically that God is a good God, and he does not curse me, and he’s not the one doing the laughing. In fact, he probably hurts more than I do, and when I cry, I cry to other sources and usually forget about him.

But this is not the lesson.. as I was driving back, a few things became crystal clear to my faith. Things I had always believed in, not by experiencing, but only by believing. But today, God allowed me to experience, a taste perhaps, of the Godless-ness that faces the lost every single day.

“We will never be good enough, we can never save ourselves.”
One of the common misunderstandings of the Christian Faith, is that people think we are morally upright people, forcing religion down their throats, telling them where they’ve gone wrong. Basically, as Christians, it’s so easy to take the moral high ground. But y’know what? Being good, does not save us. We cannot save ourselves. If you were drowning, only someone else can save you. Being good means upholding the law, whether by moral standards, or societal standards. Today, even through the best of my ability, I still made a mistake. Did I intentionally break the law? No. But did I break the law? Yes. That’s what the law does, it sets an IMPOSSIBLE standard. (James 2:9-11) But the bible teaches, all have sinned and fallen short the glory of God (Romans 8:23).

This was all I could think about for the longest time. How hopeless it was to just try to be good. In this case, being a good, law abiding driver. Sooner or later, we slip up. Or even if we don’t, the potential is always there for everything to be taken away from you despite you being law abiding. It was life’s greatest cosmic joke at play, the Catch 22. Good or bad, evil or holy, successful or failure, legacy or forgotten, you just wind up dead in the water when life ends. If you’re being good for the sake of being good, it is ultimately meaningless. Because the law does not care, it does not reward you. You just go along your way, your only reward perhaps is “status quo”.

I suppose an escapade like this, has only made me more desperate. For me, I had something taken from me. In this case, a very expensive lesson, that will probably go into thousands of dollars. It’s shown me the absolute fleetingness of this life, the meaningless of this toil, why we give in to making an easier buck, why we blame everything around us. Despite our best efforts, things can go awry, without warning, without hesitation.

It begs me to ask, is living this life worth it? Is everything you gain in this life worth it? Your goals, your best laid plans, your precautions, your excesses.. and the challenge i’ve always posed is that.. Christians, or perhaps any spiritual teaching in particular, questions not the existence, but the afterlife.. is there one? To believe in the spiritual, is to believe in the things unseen.. once you’re ready to face that question, perhaps you begin looking for signs of a god, for me, I’ve come to believe in the Christian God. It’s a mix of evidence and experience, it’ll never be blatent evidence, because the God in the bible desires a relationship, desires that you choose Him despite the good or the bad. It’s befuddling, but basically, if you don’t want to believe, he won’t force your hand. That’s not what a God of love is, or behaves. You can’t force to love. Unless it were unconditional.. but can any human being love unconditionally.

Today, I think I’ve been tested, and stretched. I don’t know what the next few weeks is going to hold in store for me.. but it has become apparent, that getting through this on my own, will make me a very bitter man, cynical to the point of forsaking all goodwill, hope, gentleness, offbeat sense of humor. Everything that has made me, the me that you know today will be lost because I would have given in to the absolution of the meaningless-ness of living this life.

But God sustains me somehow, the belief and hope that he exists, there in my darkest hour, despite the mocking and unrequited responses I get from being good natured.. He sustains me, because I’m not trying to be good anymore. I live a life, purchased, saved from a cycle of meaningless-ness. I can see the good in people, in situations, the rotten, in some sense, I understand a little more the good that God sees, and the love that he still loves us with. Perhaps in essence, my source is not my own thinking, because that would have yielded an existential death, but my source is from the eternal, that there is an afterlife.. that things happen in the realm that God allows to happen, the secret universes in our cells, the elemental life in the stars above, the vastness of the cosmos, the insignificance of man.. because my source is of something meta-human, it sustains me.

Consider what should be variable in your design.. And encapsulate the concept that varies.

Yeni bir resim formatı sisteme eklenmek istendiğinde ImageCreator sınıfı içerisinde yer alan metodlarda yer alan if koşullarına ilaveler yapılması gerekmektedir.

I wrote this comment in the forum at bowegover.ning.com. I felt that this view should appear here, on my blog, as well. Be sure to visit that site to see what others around here are saying about Bowen Island in the Salish Sea.

For centuries Canada has been dominated by the ambitions of people who came here for all the free natural resources: the free animals (pelts), free fish, free trees, free lands, free minerals, and free fossil fuels.

Now, to maintain our biodiversity, some of us are working to preserve endangered species, the fish stocks are largely depleted, there are no free lands, and hardly even any tall grass prairie, those who mine want the last of the riches in the ground that belong to our grandchildren (and in return pay us with a few years of jobs, some taxes and fees, and an eternity of pollution), and just tour the Province in Google Earth to see the devastation to our forests.

Like it or not, this practice of allowing the exploiters to take all they can is our history and the existing culture. Our ‘economy’ (whatever that means) has grown to depend on it. The owners of these resources (we, the people) live largely in urban areas, and most of our children are growing up not knowing what they own. And you cannot blame governments for letting the companies have these resources because some temporary funds will flow into the treasury, a few people are employed for a while, and the urban crowd who don’t see the consequences won’t have to pay for some of the government’s services with higher taxes.
