Hello everyone! I really enjoyed being a part of the MuteMath Odd Soul tour this winter/spring.  I played drums with Canon Blue for a total of 30 shows all over the United States over the course of 8 weeks. Orlando FL was one of the last shows of the tour and one of my favorites. The wonderful Todd Gummerman, guitarist for MuteMath, took this video from one of the balcony seats. I’m excited to share this with you guys!

Following the Odd Soul Tour I was on a spring tour with The Boxer Rebellion playing drums for Canon Blue. I will post more about that tour later!

Members of MUTEMATH

It is difficult to disagree with a personal assessment, so I looked for reviews of MUTEMATH’s live performances, soon after attending one myself, at The Beaumont Club in Kansas City, on February 16, 2012. I have been to a lot of shows in my life. Before the 16^th, my favorite, all-time live performance was My Morning Jacket, witnessed at The Uptown Theatre, in KC, during the summer of 2011. Needless to say, MUTEMATH’s show narrowly beat it out, and now stands as one of the best 130 minute segments of time during my entire life.

Right after having a damn good burger, people might say, “that was the best burger I have ever had.” It can often be the right place, at the right time, in the right mood, with the right appetite. Considering this, I looked up reviews of MUTEMATH’s shows, including the one I just went to. Comments to the effect of ‘MUTEMATH is putting on some of the best live performances anywhere right now’ suggest that I might not be exaggerating.

Other than the long play set, and the amazing music itself, highlights of the show included a projection at the back of the stage of a giant pipe organ, drummer Darren King coming out into the middle of the pit, with a small kit, to play a thrashing solo which he dismembered in moments, and lead vocalist Paul Meany boarding an inflatable raft and drifting around on top of the hands of the crowd.

In trying to classify MUTEMATH’s musical style, I have used what I know, as well as read the interpretations of others, and I am still essentially at the point of if you locate another band that sounds anything like MUTEMATH, let me know. I will put it this way; I would not be surprised if someone who liked Muse also liked MUTEMATH.

In late 2011, MUTEMATH began its “Odd Soul Tour,” in order to draw attention to the release of their new album of the same name. This is their third album, preceded by “Armistice” and a self-titled record. Beyond stating that my favorite MUTEMATH song is probably “Spotlight,” I cannot segregate their songs into categories of desire, for I would end up moving all of them.

The sound and style of music MUTEMATH produces is so unique that part of me would like to witness a growth in the production of this kind of music, but at the same time, much of its desirability comes from MUTEMATH’s current monopoly on it.
