Evan Williams is the CEO and co-founder of Twitter. He also happened to co-found Pyra Labs, which created Blogger, the blogging tool that popularized the term blog and blogging, and Odeo a podcasting company.

Jack Dorsey nasceu em St. louis, Missouri, aos 14 anos era adepto do software livre, quendo começou a programar. Seus primeiros programas foram para correios e taxi, todos ligados a mensagens pela internet, seu programa para taxi ainda funciona até hoje.

Acredita-se que o Twitter seja inspirado em Live Journal e no Messenger da AOL, foi inspirado nesses programas que teve a idéia de mensagens em tempo real.

Estudou na Universidade do próprio Missouri e de washington.

Sabendo do interesse da Odeo por programas de Mensagens instantaneas, criou o protótipo do Twitter em duas semanas para atender a essa empresa. Mais tarde a Odeo seria também comprada, mas a Twitter inc foi desmembrada justamente pelo seu potencial de crescimento.

À princípio, a Twitter não foi criada com o intuíto de ser popular, foi criado como um aplicativo para empresas, a mesma linha que Dorsey vinha seguindo até então, sua finalidade era que as empresas soubessem o que os empregados estavam fazendo no momento.

Com o crescimento, o Twitter se revelou muito popular e se à princípio o objetivo não era dar lucro, Dorsey começou a pensar nessa possibilidade.

A Odeo foi a empresa incubadora do Twuitter, foi lá que o Twitter conseguiu seu primeiros usuários, foi lá também que recebeu os primeiros investimento. Evan Williams que havia saído da Google, acreditou no potencial do projeto e aderiu à idéia.

Quando a Twitter Inc foi criada, Jack Dorsey, Evan Willians e Biz Stone fundaram a nova empresa que assustaria até a Google, a marca mais valiosa do mundo.

O nome Twitter, vem de Twittr, por sua vez inspirado no Flickr.

Com o crescimento da empresa, Williams assumiu o papel de SEO, enquanto Dorsey assumia o cargo de diretor executivo e conselho.

Conhecido como a maior sala de bate-papo do mundo, o que não é pouco, já que uma sala de bate-papo trabalha em internet relay chat, sendo, geralmente, um canal limitado. Pelo que se sabe, hoje, o Twitter não só trabalha com um texto relativamente satisfatório, como chegou-se a uma categoria onde não há limite para o sistema.

Eu diria que o Twitter foi o primeiro sistema para internet a trabalhar sem limite de usuários, imppressionando até os engenheiros da Google.

O sistema de microblogging da Twitter agradou a todos, para não ser unanimidade, empresas de jornalismo tem proibido seus jornalistas de usar o sistema, alegam que o limite de texto do Twitter atrapalha a qualidade da notícia, será?

Recentemente, boatos na internet divulgaram que a alta cúpula da Globo estaria descontente com o uso do serviço da Twitter pelos seus funcionários. Acontece que ter um amigo famoso no Twitter é um previlégio, para os famosos passou a ser uma fogueira das vaidades.

De qualquer modo, especialistas afirmam que é preciso ver o Twitter como Microbloging e não como sala de bate-papo, pelo fato de ficar registrado, o que pode expor demasiadamente uma pessoa.

When YouTube was officially launched in November 2005, it only took a few months before its popularity multiplied by the summer of 2006. Its design by founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim changed the way we watch videos on the internet; music videos are no longer only available through Yahoo! and hardly anyone streams live footage through RealPlayer.

So why isn’t there a well-established YouTube of audio?

Every MySpace profile has an audio player, usually with some tracks off of a trendy unknown local indie acts debut EP (and a link to the iTunes page for the digital download of said EP).

With the growing popularity of podcasts and programs such as Skype (and to a lesser extent, Übercaster), it’s a wonder why it’s so hard to find an easy audio host.

Not to mention that prank calls and celebrity hissy fits still capture the publics attention. In February, TMZ released an audio recording of Christian Bale losing it on the set of Terminator Salvation, and in November, a prank call to Sarah Palin from a Canadian comedian posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy made its way around the internet and onto news programs.

Most recently, the Michael Jackson and Steve McNair 9-1-1 calls have surfaced on the internet. I’ve been searching Google for a suitable website that hosts audio files with HTML code to embed a player and found about half-a-dozen.

None seem to be compatible with WordPress.

• Audioo is a site designed for the exact purpose of hosting audio files the same way YouTube hosts video files. The template is identical, but when the copy-and-paste HTML code is put into WordPress, nothing appears.

• Houndbite is similar, but like Audioo, nothing shows up when its code is plugged in.

• Odeo collects audio (and video) clips from all over the internet and allows users to listen to them through a player. Creating an account is free, but like the other players, it doesn’t work on WordPress.

• Yudu is a free tool for journalists that offers web hosting of audio, video, images and documents, but its player won’t play ball either.

• Blip.fm isn’t quite the same–it’s more of a virtual jukebox. It boasts integration with Twitter, FriendFeed, Tumblr and LiveJournal, but it’s front page defines its capabilities: “create your own music station.” You are the DJ, but rather than upload your own content, you pick songs from Blip.fm’s library. It’s just not the same.

• Blip.fm’s biggest competition is IMEEM, “the world’s largest social music service.” It offers millions of songs to stream for free, but it’s no place to upload your own work.

• VR+ is a pay program that turns cell phones (namely the iPhone and the BlackBerry) into audio recorders. It can capture an audio clip, then share it via email, Facebook, MySpace Twitter and Blogger–but not WordPress.

• Like VR+, Evoca can record audio through cell phones, but also through your computer microphone and Skype. It also allows previously recorded clips to be uploaded, but like VR+, it’s not free.

What these sites have in common is that not one stands out above the other. Every humour site has its own video player and live video sites like uStream, Qik and Justin.tv. It’s just so easy to get video online.

There are dozens of YouTube copycats–Metacafe, Dailymotion, Google Videos, Revver–but the audio hosts have no one to copy.

I then found out that WordPress only likes using its own audio player, which only supports MP3 files, but can be used for free, as long as the file is hosted elsewhere (unless you purchase a space upgrade for audio abilities).

Until one site establishes itself as the alpha male by allowing audio uploads of any filetype with full integration into todays social networking sites and mobile devices, the rest of us will have to adjust our reception.

I’m excited to announce that I’ve found a way to upload some of my radio programs to the net so that they are now available to everyone, as opposed to my usual geographically limited audience in New Zealand’s Far North.

About three weeks ago, Facebook and Twitter ended several weeks of serious talks, in which Facebook was offering to acquire Twitter for $500 million of its stock, which also included a cash component.

While rumors of Facebook’s interest were brought up in an interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the Web 2.0 Summit a few weeks ago, some shot down the idea as silly.

Quite incorrectly, as it turns out, since top execs at both Facebook and Twitter were right then at the tail end of discussions, which were initiated by the privately held Facebook in mid-October, about bringing the two together.

Those talks, sources on both sides said, are now over.

So why did the deal break down?

Well, as is usually the case, over price–was $500 million worth of Facebook stock actually worth $500 million?–and the typical concerns about integration and costs.

But, more important, it seems, was a feeling among Twitter investors and execs that the start-up should still take a shot at building its revenues–there are none right now–as well as it had done at building its growth.

“It’s more about timing,” said one person familiar with Twitter’s motivations. “There is a strong feeling that there is still an opportunity–even with the economic downturn–to blow this thing out.”

Still, combining the world’s fastest-growing social-networking site with what is quickly becoming the best-known microblogging service is actually a natural fit.

That’s especially true given that Facebook–for all its powerful online social connections–has seen Twitter race past it in innovating in the “status update” arena.

While some sources at Facebook said Zuckerberg was becoming frustrated by the buzz Twitter was getting–a market that should have been dominated by Facebook–others at the company said he was interested in buying Twitter because of his respect for its progress.

Indeed, at the Web 2.0 interview, Zuckerberg called Twitter an “elegant model” and said that he was “really impressed by what they’ve done.”

Indeed, with about six million registrations, as reported in October, up 600 percent over the last year, the San Francisco-based Twitter–launched in 2006–has had impressive growth.

(It has also been plagued by technical issues, which are–to be fair–decreasing.)

In any case, for those not familiar with it, the premise of Twitter is dead simple: A registered user logs in via the Internet or a mobile phone and answers the “What are you doing?” question the service asks in only 140 characters or fewer.

It’s quite a clever idea, although–so far–not a money-making one.

To try to goose that, Twitter’s board replaced the engineer who created Twitter, Jack Dorsey, with another founder, Evan Williams, who had served as its chairman and chief product officer.

The more experienced Williams (pictured here) had already built one company–Pyra Labs, which created the Blogger blogging service–that he sold to Google in 2003. He also started the audio and video search site Odeo, where Twitter was actually born.

Still, its investors have not come down on Twitter to hold back its growth efforts, and have handed over $20 million to the start-up so far. In its last round, Twitter was valued at $98 million.

Its funders include: Union Square Ventures, Charles River Ventures, Digital Garage, Spark Capital and Bezos Expeditions, backed by Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.

In addition, well-known Silicon Valley figures, such as Marc Andreessen and Ron Conway, have also invested. Interestingly,Andreessen is also on Facebook’s board.

Other private investors include FeedBurner Co-Founder (and now Googler) Dick Costolo, former Epinions Co-Founder Naval Ravikant and former Googler Chris Sacca.

Twitter needs all the investors it can get, since it has no revenue, although it has been exploring things like charging business customers and adding advertising into the consumer service.

Lack of revenues was an issue for Facebook, said sources, especially related to fees Twitter pays for delivery of its messages to cellphones.

While the issue has been manageable in the U.S., Twitter cut off its SMS support in some international markets this summer because of too-high costs.

But, if Twitter was offered to Facebook’s 120 million users, Facebook execs estimated that it might have to deal with huge SMS fees–up to $75 million annually.

“Facebook has its own revenue-generating challenges,” said one person close to the company. “As much as Twitter would give them a lift in the status area, it was still a worry.”

Not enough, said several sources, to stop Facebook from making another approach at some point in the future. “We’d hate to see Twitter go to another company,” said one source.

Indeed, while all are even more price-conscious than Facebook, large companies that could also be interested include: Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft (MSFT) or a large telecom company, such as Verizon (VZ).

If it had completed the deal to buy Twitter, it would have been Facebook’s most significant acquisition by far.

Zuckerberg and Williams did meet and get along well, but the deal was primarily negotiated by Spark Capital partner Bijan Sabet (Spark is a Twitter investor) and Facebook deal guy Dan Rose.

But in this time, at least, the Twitter side was still not interested in selling at the price Facebook had offered.

The $500 million offered was in an all-stock form, said sources on both sides, at the $15 billion valuation that came from the Microsoft’s investment in the company last October.

The Twitter side felt that figure was inflated and the shares should be valued at the lower figures that have also been reported for Facebook’s true valuation, more in the $5 billion range.

That would have given the deal a $150 million price tag, which was seen as too low, especially since it was in Facebook stock and not cash initially.

In fact, Twitter wanted cash, which some sources say was offered by Facebook in the $50 to $100 million range, in addition to stock, but taking too much stock was still a major issue.

There are other ways the pair could have approximated a safer choice for Twitter, via warrants, of course, or other methods.

But, said several sources close to Twitter, the primary reason for not selling was because its board simply did not want to yet or perhaps ever.

Said one source: “The question is, is it really a good idea to sell on the first chance you get?”

Well, for Twitter, we’ll just have to wait and see about that, of course.

Ahora que hablamos de música, si no te sabes el nombre de una canción que estás escuchando y te gusta, puedes usar Tunatic, es un programa bastante sencillo, en ingles, solo necesitas tener un micrófono. Acercas el micrófono al altavoz donde esté emitiendo esa canción y en pocos segundos te dirá el nombre y su autor. Es muy util, y lo mejor, es gratis .

I started writing this blog on 8 May 2008 and this is my 100th post. I had thought about starting a blog for a while but I never really wanted to write about the day to day travails of a startup which has been covered to death a million times elsewhere. As I have a general interest in technology regardless of whether it is a field we are working in ourselves it gave me the opportunity to write, and more importantly think, about the subject more broadly.

The funny thing is that doing that thinking led me to come up with another idea which will now become our first product. I remember reading something that Evan Williams said about your side projects ending up being the most interesting. He started Blogger that way and Twitter also began when he was working on Odeo. Having now experienced it this is true. What you also need is the ability to adapt quickly and accept that something you have been working on a long time should be put to one side.

Doing a startup is all about launching a product. If you don’t have any track record that is actually the easiest way to succeed. There will always be pressure to do market research and business plans but my experience is that you are better off focusing your attention on getting the product out. Nobody ever reads your plans anyway.

Predicting the future

We spent a lot of time on this for our first project and I think you need to have the necessary skills to put a forecast together. That said the revenue numbers in the plans are going to be largely guesswork. Nobody can foretell the future and that is in essence what you are being asked to do.

No startup is going to put together a financial forecast which shows the company burning cash and going bust but that is what happens most of the time. Yes you need to budget for near term costs because that is what you can analyse with any degree of accuracy but not the rest. Putting together a competent forecast shows your general understanding of business, demonstrates you can think of the main cost centres and that you will be competent when the cash comes in. Understanding cashflow is the most important thing in the early days and we’re lucky to have an accountant as one of our original investors.

It’s the same with market research. There’s always great pressure to read marketing reports and describe what is going on. The problem with that approach is that market reports can only tell you what happened in the past. They can’t tell you how to build a great product. Both our products came from hunches inspired by looking at people’s behaviour on the Internet. I always think if you spend too long with market reports you end up persuading yourself that something like Spiralfrog can work. Market reports can’t tell you what to build, you have to decide that for yourself.

Ultimately what really counts is product. To me the best stuff is intuitive and simple, the greatest ideas always are. But nobody outside your friends and family will back a good idea. You need to build it. Getting anyone to use it is the next big step. If you get there you are a long way down the road and then people might start to take notice.
