We used a film poster from France and simplified it.

The movie, Whale Rider was deeply touching. It described the growth of a young girl named Paikea, struggling against a sexist community. Her struggles can be compared to Telemachus’s struggles against the men trying to woo his mother in The Odyssey. They showed the growth of a young girl and boy into leaders, but also showed the power of change. But Telemachus and Paikea have trouble-getting recognition. Along the way getting past these struggles, Paikea and Telemachus learn a lot about themselves.

Throughout the film Whale Rider, Paikea struggled with her grandfather over the prophet that the first-born son will rise up and become the leader. During Paikea’s birth her mother and twin brother die. Her father Porourangi becomes distressed over his losses and refused to speak to his father Koro. Porourangi then decided to move away to Germany to get away from his misery and to start his art gallery. Koro who had always hoped Porourangi’s first son would be the chosen one, tries to find hope in the other first-born boys but fails. This relates to The Odyssey in many ways, such as how Paikea does not see her father for most of her life, and how other family members raise her. Telemachus does not see his father Odysseus for most practically his whole life, and is raised by his mother.

Paikea discovers she is the ‘chosen one’ who will become chief, but more importantly she learns a lot about her heritage. When a person learns about his or her heritage, they usually can’t help but identify with it. We learn about who we are, and how we became this way. Paikea learns why she is in New Zealand and her family’s connection to the ocean and because of it, she feels connected to the ocean.

Telemachus learns to become a man during his struggles. He is surrounded by his mother’s suitors and is never able to become a man while they stand over him and insult him. However, when Telemachus ventures of to find his father, he also finds his manhood. During his travels Telemachus is forced into different situations. He gets through these difficulties and learns from them. The Odyssey and Whale Rider are both books with interesting characters that travel a long way spiritually, and who take on enormous challenges that show them who they are, and what they are mad of.

Korean pop superstar act Super Junior’s “Sorry Sorry” album proves to be a consistent seller in Odyssey, the country’s biggest record retail chain with more than 50 record stores nationwide. The album is still in their International Album Chart for 10 consecutive weeks! “Sorry Sorry” was released locally on September 4, 2009 and entered the Odyssey album chart the week after its release. Since then it has never left their album chart.

Super Junior has achieved something PHENOMENAL for a K-Pop artist. Under the Influence – I

La Rochefoucauld writes, “Le soleil ni la mort ne se peuvent regarder fixément”: “Neither the sun nor death can be stared at (looked at fixedly)” (Maxim 19, edition of 1678.)  In each case seeing would undo sight.  But impossibility is apt to be disregarded.  We may think of the peril of raising one’s eyes to the Sun King; or of a philosopher who, following Socrates, practices dying and being dead (Phaedo 64a), until he becomes unable to see life as others do.

The blindness or darkness that ensues in such cases has been represented as the condition of a castaway, one shipwrecked.  Thus the men of Odysseus appropriate the cattle of Helios Hyperion, the Sun that is Over, and having so raised their eyes to the god, they slay his beasts ὑπέρβιον, hyperbion, over-boldly (Odyssey 1.8, 12.379).  Demanding atonement, Helios threatens to go down to Hades and shine among the dead; to satisfy him Zeus blasts the men out of Odysseus’s ship with a thunderbolt and destroys it.  Their leader, who had condemned the sacrilege, is saved alone, to be carried all but helpless to Calypso’s island.  —What the god Odysseus offended (by proxy) would have done is to blind the living world and reveal the thinness of the one below.  By this the hero’s affinity with him is evident, for Odysseus too is a blinder—not only of the Cyclops, but of many men by his disguises, including the Trojan horse, and the cloak of his speech—and himself visits the dead, illuminating them but experiencing their emptiness.

Again, Milton’s Satan, “fraught / With envy against the Son of God,” (Paradise Lost 5.661) is cast “Thunder-struck” (6.858) with his followers into “a fiery Gulf” in “darkness visible,” (1.52, 63) from which he makes his way to land.  He resembles a sun darkened:

His form had not yet lost
All her Original brightness, nor appear’d
Less than Arch-Angel ruin’d, and th’ excess
Of Glory obscur’d: As when the Sun new ris’n
Looks through the Horizontal misty Air
Shorn of his Beams, or from behind the Moon
In dim Eclipse disastrous twilight sheds
On half the Nations, and with fear of change
Perplexes Monarchs.  Dark’n’d so, yet shone
Above them all th’ Arch-Angel: but his face
Deep scars of Thunder had intrencht…

At the gate of his new world Satan encounters Sin and “her black attendant Death” (7.547),

The other shape,
If shape it might be call’d that shape had none
Distinguishable in member, joint, or limb,
Or substance might be call’d that shadow seem’d,
For each seem’d either—black it stood as Night…
(2.666)

Death is unseeable, or unknowable, because it has no form; in Greek, no eidos.  —This is the very idea that frightens people about Hades, Socrates thinks: the name of the place (that is, of the god whose place it is), Ἅιδης, Haidēs, resembles ἀειδής, aeidēs, which is ἀ-εἶδος, a-eidos, ‘without form,’ ‘invisible,’ ‘unknowable’ (Cratylus 403a).  In truth, their anxiety is unwarranted: it is the world that is ever-changing, while the ideal realm of the invisible is the proper place of the soul that is like it (Phaedo 79a–81d).

The blind poets’ notions of Heaven’s light gone down to shine in the underworld, and of the darkness below risen up to infect the world above—both suggest the curious image of a black sun.  Where was it first formulated in this phrase?  The first occurrence I am aware of is in Heine’s Der Schiffbrüchige, The Shipwrecked One, whose eponymous figure describes by it the eye of his lost beloved:

…Und aus dem süßen, blassen Antlitz,
Groß und gewaltig, strahlt ein Auge,
Wie eine schwarze Sonne.

O, du schwarze Sonne, wie oft,
Entzückend oft, trank ich aus dir
die wilden Begeistrungsflammen…

…And out of her sweet, pale face,
large and powerful, beams an eye,
like a black sun.

O thou black sun, how often,
enchantingly often, I drank from thee
wild flames of inspiration…

Now he lies on a barren shore.  A quarter-century later Nerval uses the expression in his famous El Desdichado, which begins:

Je suis le ténébreux, — le veuf, — l’inconsolé,
Le prince d’Aquitaine à la tour abolie :
Ma seule étoile est morte, — et mon luth constellé
Porte le Soleil noir de la Mélancolie.

I am the dark one,—the widower,—the unconsoled,
the prince of Aquitaine with the ruined tower:
my only star is dead,—and my star-spangled lute
bears the black Sun of Melancholy.

Elsewhere (as the Pléiade edition points out) he alludes to “the black sun of melancholy, which sheds dark rays upon the face of the dreaming angel of Albert [sic] Dürer”; thus the allusion is to the well-known engraving “Melencolia I.”  Without going further into this poem, I note that in its own way it seems to continue the theme of the castaway.  Following Walter Scott’s error in Ivanhoe, Nerval presumably thinks the Spanish title means “The Disinherited One,” separated from his patrimony; and in his lostness the speaker resembles Keats’s knight, “alone and palely loitering.”  He says, “J’ai rêvé dans la grotte où nage la syrène…,” “I have dreamed in the grotto where the siren swims…”; but unlike Odysseus, he has acquired the knowledge she imparts.

After all I suppose the theme of shipwreck is nothing more than a particular case of the favorite condition of the poets, that of exile.

ok soooo some of you dig the vans and some of you hate the vans… but either way here’s more vans.

a bit of history first… in 1995 honda released it’s first odyssey van and it was a good van, but it was unconventional, it had 4 normal doors, all 4 doors had window’s that rolled down, it only had a 4 cylinder engine, and it wasn’t as wide, tall, or as long as much of the competition…. but there is good in this.

the new van only weighted 200lbs more then the accord(1995) and because of that it handled very well like the accord, stopped well, and also got good gas milage like the accord….. but north america didn’t like it that much and so the next version in 1999 followed suit of the rest of the pack, and gained ~700lbs!!!

so for some of us the 1st generation was the best mix between a sedan and a full sized “mini” van, but in japan the original style carried on still under the odyssey name, they 2nd gen was basically the same as the first with minor styling updates, but the 3rd gen was all new and received the newer K series 4 cylinder motors(2.4L with 160 or 200hp)

since i showed some pics of the first gen ody’s here in a recent post , I’ll just show modified 2nd and 3rd gens here.

After fighting for numerous years (ten) in Troy (whose Italian name is the same word as the one for “slut”), Odysseus (whose Latin name is “Ulysses”) gets lost at sea and conveniently lands on a deserted island, and is offered the chance to become immortal and spend the rest of his own existence on abovementioned island, with the sole company of a gorgeous and also immortal nympho nymph, named Calypso (a.k.a. Atlantis, daughter of Atlas -no shit!-). He chooses otherwise.

And that would be all and it is a shame because it would have been material for a great story, but instead Odysseus prefers to spend more years at sea only to go back home and find his wife in the “company” of a humungous number of young and athletic men, and they all pretend nothing has really happened.

Meanwhile Calypso turns emo and tries to kill herself because her prince charming chose a 50 years old MILF over her, but she is immortal so she does not actually die, which only makes her even more emo.

In the end, Ulysses kills all the young boys harassing his wife, and then is put to test by said wife who doesn’t seem to trust him after so many years. As I have said, he should have stayed with the nymph in the first place and we all would have been spared a lot of trouble.
