Seven teams will fight it out in the UAE for the trophy

Love it or loathe it the FIFA Club World Cup is going to remain a staple part of the football calendar. To some observers it’s a chance to win a trophy and add more prestige to their club. To some others it’s a competition that turns up in the middle of a long hard season, getting in the way of domestic progress. Either way there will be seven teams in the United Arab Emirates from December 9-19 who will be giving everything to win the cup. Here is Stoppage Time’s guide to the participants:

FC BARCELONA – UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

FC Barcelona became European champions for the third time in May after beating Manchester United 2-0 in Rome. It is surprising that a massive club such as “Barça” has never won the FIFA Club World Cup or its predecessor, the Intercontinental Cup. After twice being crowned European champions in 1992 and 2006 the Catalans have been defeated by Brazilian clubs in their attempts to be crowned the world’s best. In 1992 a São Paulo side inspired by Rai beat Barça 2-1 and then, three years ago, Internacional scored a late goal to deny Barcelona again. This time the ‘Blaugrana’ hope to make it third time lucky in this tournament and add the FIFA Club World Cup to the other five trophies they’ve won under their coach Pep Guardiola.

ESTUDIANTES DE LA PLATA – COPA LIBERTADORES WINNERS 2009

Estudiantes won their fourth Copa Libertadores with a 2-1 victory over two legs against Brazilian side Cruzeiro. The Argentinian side had a mixed record in the Intercontinental Cup during their heyday in the late 1960s and early 70s. Their solo victory came in 1968 after a 2-1 aggregate win over Manchester United (before 1979 the champions of Europe and South America played home and away matches to win the cup). Their next two efforts, however, ended in failure; in 1969 Milan won 4-2 on aggregate and in 1970 Feyenoord Rotterdam claimed their only world title with a 3-2 aggregate win. Can Juan Sebastián Verón emulate his father Juan Ramón’s achievements and become a world champion with his boyhood club?

ATLANTE CF – CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The Mexican side secured their second CONCACAF Champions League title after an all-Mexican affair with Cruz Azul ended up 2-0 after a two-legged final. Atlante’s other title win was back in 1983 when they defeated Surinam’s Robinhood FC (yes, really!) 6-1 over two legs. Atlante’s Club World Cup campaign will kick-off at the quarter-final stage against either Al Ahli or Auckland City, who meet in the first match of the competition.

POHANG STEELERS – AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The three time Asian champions have not always dominated the domestic scene in South Korea but tend to thrive in Asian club competition. After previous successes in 1997 and 1998, Pohang Steelers won a third title this year by defeating Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Tokyo’s National Stadium. Pohang will play against TP Mazembe at the quarter-final stage, the winner of which faces Estudiantes in the semi-finals.

TP MAZEMBE – CAF AFRICAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The Congolese side have been African champions on three occasions after their most recent success was decided on away goals against Nigerian team Heartlands FC. After the Nigerians won the first leg 2-1 at home, Mazembe won the second leg 1-0 to secure a passage to the Middle East. A meeting with Estudiantes de la Plata awaits if they can overcome Pohang Steelers in the quarter-final.

AUCKLAND CITY – OFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The New Zealanders will be participating in the FIFA Club World Cup for a second time, after their previous appearance in 2006, following their 9-4 win over Soloman Islands’ club Koloale FC in the two-legged OFC Champions League final. In 2006 Auckland City lost in the opening play-off match to Al Ahly of Egypt 2-0. Can they avoid a repeat against a similarly named Al Ahli of UAE in this year’s tournament?

AL AHLI – UAE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2009

Representing the host country in this year’s tournament, Al Ahli have never been Asian champions but are the current UAE League champions after winning the title by one point from nearest challengers Al Jazira Club. Last season’s attempt at continental glory came to an end in the group phase of the AFC Champions League competition. Will meet Atlante CF in the quarter-final if they beat Auckland City in the play-off match.

The Game. The World. Wir verstehen aller herbstlich-kulinarischen Genüsse zum Trotz nicht, wie Game und World so ganz universell in einem Slogan zusammenfinden können. World – die Welt. Game – das Wild (lesenswert in diesem Zusammenhang die Erzählung Green Hills of Africa von Hemingway, in der ein Mann seine Angst vor der Impotenz mit der Jagd nach Trophäen, sogenanntem big game hunting, in Afrika kompensiert). Vermutlich war es die Blatter’sche Vision, vermengt mit derart potenziellen Gründen, dass die WM 2010 in Afrika stattfinden wird, die den furchtbaren Slogan aus der Taufe hob (visionäre Männer wie Joseph S. Blatter wissen aus unerfindlichen – sprich visionären – Gründen jeweils schon im Voraus, wie Abstimmungen ausgehen. Insider vermuten, es hänge mit seiner basisdemokratischen Walliser Herkunft zusammen).

Bemerkenswerterweise verstummt das berechtigte und vornehmlich männliche Protestgeheul gegen die Fifa immer zwischen dem Abschluss der Qualifikation und der Übergabe des World Cup (in Blatters visionär bilingualen Ausprache «World Coupe» genannt). Stattdessen wird auf Nebenkriegsschauplätzen gescharmützelt.

Nebst dem Lamento über Le hand of God, das den vormaligen Saubermann des Weltfussballs Thierry Henri auf eine Stufe mit dem gefallenen Engel vom Rio de la Plata in der Gestalt eines Pyknikers stellt, ereifern sich auf einmal die Kommentatoren rund um den Globus über Nebensächlickeiten, die meist um Trainer- und Stürmerfragen oszillieren. Einer hingegen vermerkte, beim nicht qualifizierten Team von Israel handle es sich immerhin um Vertreter einer Krieg führenden Nation. Diesen Steilpass erlaufen wir mit stupender Leichtigkeit und durchleuchten in Kürze die Reinheit des Teilnehmerfeldes.

CAF – Afrika

Vom Afrikanischen Kontinent, wir erlauben uns die Pauschalisierung, fahren lauter Verbrecher nach Südafrika. Lauter Verbrecher! Algerische Wahlbetrüger (Verbot des Wahlsiegers Front Islamique du Salut), Nigeriansiche Menschenrechtsverletzer (ermordeter Ken Saro-Wiwa für ein paar shellige Petrodollars). Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana und Cameroun sind nicht nur Wiegen der Menschheit, sondern Trainingsgelände für den Gebrauch von Macheten und der Korruption (interne Vorbilder finden sich links oberhalb des Grand Hotel Dolder).

OFC – Ozenanien

Nicht viel besser sieht es im Raum Ozeanien aus: Australien, eine als Kontinent geschimpfte Lumpeninsel, die boat people absaufen und Aborignies sich voll saufen lässt.

AFC – Asien

Japan, ach Japan, dieser krude Mix aus shintoistischer Zurückhaltung und Leugnung von allen je begangenen Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit. Die Südkoreanischen Betrüger, die den Einzug in den Halbfinal 2002 nachweislich gekauft haben (mit dem Segen des Saint Joseph; immerhin wurde der ecuadorianische Schiedsrichter Byron Moreno auch in seinem Heimatland eindeutig der Schiebung überführt). Nordkorea, pfui Teufel, lässt sein Volk verhungern und serviert ihm einzig einen Atompilz zum Zvieri.

UEFA – Europa

Europa, insgesamt ein ins Sozimäntelchen gekleideter faschistoider Cocktail aus Katholizismus, Kapitalismus, Antisemitismus und Fremdenhass, exportiert, Frankreich und England an der Spitze, Waffen und Exploitation im Quadrat. Ein wunderbarer Kontinent. Die Schweiz ist, im doppelten Sinn des Wortes, ein gut geschmiertes Rädchen in dieser, nebst den USA, verlogensten Maschine auf dem Globus.

CONCACAF – Nordamerika

Womit wir schon bei der CONCACAF wären. Nebst den USA, übrigens einer Krieg führenden Nation wie Frankreich, Deutschland, England, Italien, Australien, finden wir das herrliche Mexiko mit der höchsten Mordrate (sowie der höchsten Rate an unaufgeklärten Verbrechen, eingeschlossen die Profiteure der Maispreiserhöhung, damit die Armen vor Hunger nach Mais verrecken während unsere meist linksliberalen Gutmenschen mit Biosprit ins Wochenende fahren können). Auch mit von der Partie das paradiesische Honduras, jeweils nur einen Genickschuss vom nächsten Militärputsch entfernt.

CONMEBOL – Südamerika

Von Honduras aus ist es dann jeweils nur noch ein kleiner Schritt bis in den ewigen Hinterhof dieser Welt, dem vom lieben Gott und Papst Johannes Paul II. persönlich gesegneten Südamerika. Mit den Teilnehmerländern Paraguay (General Alfredo Stroessner, vierzig Jahre blutiger Diktator, wurde anfangs der neunziger Jahre endlich abgelöst, notabene durch einen anderen Diktator), Brasilien (wer kann sich an all die Generalissmos wie da Silva und Medici noch erinnern, nachdem auch noch die paraguayansichen Diktatoren dort unbescholten ihren Lebensabend verbringen), Argentinien (der Begriff Junta ist die wohl zynischste Bezeichnung für das Regime Videlas, und der selige Juan Diaz, der sich für mein Zahnheil verpflichtet hatte, berichtete mit tränenfeuchten Augen vom WM-Titel von 1978 im eigenen Land – Buenas Dias Argentina, guten Tag Du schönes Land –, weil damals drei seiner Studienkollegen für immer in den Folterkellern verschwunden waren), und über Uruguay und Chile (übrigens beides Miltitärdikaturen wie heute zum Beispiel Venezuela), mögen wir keine Worte mehr verlieren. Ausser, dass all diese Länder von Europa und den USA immer sehr grosszügig unterstützt worden waren.

Nachdem nun also das Krieg führende Israel nicht an der WM teilnehmen wird, schauen wir getrost nach Südafrika, wo sich for the world and for the game all die wilden Hunde auf dem Platz und all die Schweinehunde von der Regierungsbank ein Stelldichein geben werden. Let the games begin!

P.S. Eine Mannschaft fehlt, die ein wenig Licht ins Dunkel gebracht hätte. Es ist das traurige Bosnien, das aus der Sniper Alley von 1995 auferstanden ist. Ein Land mit orthodoxen Zwiebeltürmen, katholischen Kirchtürmen und muslimischen Minaretten, das Land des traurigen Ivica Osim, der damals, 1992, mit seiner jugoslawischen Jahrhundert-Mannschaft nicht an die EM fahren durfte. Weil seine Heimat Jugoslawien eine Krieg führende Nation war. Bosnien, oh reiner Widerspruch, Lust, niemandes Wiege zu sein unter soviel Ländern. (L.T.)

NUEVA ZELANDA 1(1) – (0) 0 BAHRÉIN
El repechaje entre el quinto de Asia y el campeón de Oceanía finalizó favorable a los neozelandeses con una victoria en Port Wellington de 1-0. El gol fue al minuto 45 de parte de Rory Fallon de cabeza tras un tiro de esquina. En la segunda parte, Bahréin tuvo la gran oportunidad de clasificar al 50’ con un penal, sin embargo el arquero Mark Paston atajó el penal.
Nueva Zelanda regresa a una Copa del Mundo después de que lo hiciera por única vez en España 1982. Bahréin perdió su segundo repechaje de forma consecutiva.

UEFA

PORTUGAL 1-0 BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA
Portugal consiguió una victoria ajustadísima ante Bosnia en el primer partido del repechaje. El gol lusitano fue de Bruno Alves minuto 31, cabeceando un centro de Nani. Los bosnios tuvieron por lo menos 3 remates que se estrellaron en los postes, pero la más cercana fue el remate de Dzeko al 87’ cabeceando un balón al travesaño, el rebote le quedó a un compañero sin embargo la pelota volvió a estrellarse con el poste.

IRLANDA 0-1 FRANCIA
El equipo francés ganó con un solitario tanto de Nicolas Anelka al minuto 72. El galo remató desde el borde del área, la pelota se desvió en un defensor e ingresó pegada al poste izquierdo del arquero Shay Given.

GRECIA 0-0 UCRANIA
Los griegos no aprovecharon su condición de local ante los ucranianos, sin embargo no recibieron goles en casa, que en este tipo de series a veces es más importante que la misma victoria por el valor doble de los goles de visita.

RUSIA 2-1 ESLOVENIA
Con los dos goles de Dyniar Bilyaletdinov a los minutos 40 y 52, parecía que los rusos encaminaban fácilmente la serie , sin embargo un error defensivo le permitió a los eslovenos descontar al minuto 88 por intermedio de Nejc Pecnik rematando un mal despeje que dio el arquero Igor Akinfeev. Al 90’ Akinfeev enmendó su error atajando un potente disparo de un rival que pudo significar la igualada.

CAF

África definió dos clasificados más y un repechaje o partido de desempate que se jugará el día de mañana.

Grupo A

Camerún regresó a la Copa del Mundo después de su ausencia en Alemania 2006. los cameruneses anotaron dos veces en su visita a Marruecos vía Achille Webo al 19’ y Samuel Eto’o al 52’.

Grupo B

Nigeria selló su pasaporte gracias a la victoria de Mozambique ante a Túnez. Los nigerianos cumplieron su parte derrotando a Kenia de visita milagrosamente 2-3 cuando caían 1-0 en la primera parte y cuando los kenianos empataron en la segunda mitad. Los goles fueron cayendo de esta forma en el juego: al 15’ Oliech para Kenia, al 60’ Martins para Nigeria, al 64’ Yakubu para Nigeria, al 77’ Wetende para Kenia y finalmente al 81’ Martins para Nigeria.

En el otro juego los tunecinos que fueron líderes durante toda la eliminatoria, perdieron el invicto en el partido más importante contra Mozambique. El gol de Dario al 83’ le dio el pase a Nigeria.

RESULTADOS

Grupo C

Argelia y Egipto decidirán el último pase del continente africano al mundial el día de mañana en un partido de desempate que se celebrará en Sudán. Esto se debe a que los egipcios derrotaron a los argelinos en casa por 2-0 (Zaki al 3’ y Meteab al 95’) y con ello todas las formas de desempate utilizadas por la FIFA en grupos eliminatorios quedaron empatados.

Ghana ya clasificada igualó con Malí en casa, mientras que Sudán perdió con Benín.

Grupo E

Costa de Marfil ya clasificada cerró goleando a Guinea en casa y Burkina Faso también terminó de buena forma su eliminatoria venciendo a Malaui.

Bobby Charlton, ex-craque da seleção da Inglaterra, participa do sorteio do Mundial de Clubes da FIFA em Abu Dhabi

No dia 12 de novembro último, foi realizado em Abu Dhabi, capital dos Emirados Árabes Unidos, o sorteio dos jogos do Mundial de Clubes da FIFA 2009 que será realizado nesse país (que também sediará a competição em 2010). O clube mexicano Atlante é o atual campeão da Liga dos Campeões da CONCACAF (LCC) e representante dessa confederação – da qual faz parte a MLS – no Mundial. Veja os outros competidores:

• Al-Ahli (Emirados Árabes Unidos) - campeão local, representa o país-sede;
• Auckland City (Nova Zelândia) – campeão da Liga dos Campeões da OFC;
• Barcelona (Espanha) - campeão da Liga dos Campeões da UEFA;
• Estudiantes de La Plata (Argentina) - campeão da Copa Libertadores da América;
• Pohang Steelers (Coréia do Sul) – campeão da Liga dos Campeões da AFC;
• TP Mazembe (República Democrática do Congo) - campeão da Liga dos Campeões da África.

O Mundial se inicia em 9 de dezembro próximo com a partida Auckland City x Al-Ahli. O vencedor enfrentará o Atlante que, pelo sorteio (realizado pelo ex-craque da seleção da Inglaterra, Bobby Charlton), já está nas quartas-de-finais da competição. Por sua vez, o vencedor desta partida enfrenta o poderoso Barcelona, que está automaticamente classificado para as semifinais. A outra partida das quartas-de-finais é entre TP Mazembe x Pohang Steelers cujo vencedor enfrenta o igualmente poderoso Estudiantes de La Plata que, assim como o Barcelona, também já está automaticamente classificado para as semifinais do campeonato.

O Mundial deste ano promete ser emocionante. O Atlante, caso vença o seu jogo nas quartas, terá uma parada duríssima contra o fortíssimo Barcelona, o que, com certeza, fará os corações saírem pela boca…

Repesca Asiático-Oceánica

Nueva Zelanda se hizo fuerte en su casa y tras ganar por 1-0 a Bahrein se ha ganado el pase al Mundial. Un saque de esquina en el minuto 45 fue cabeceado por el delantero Rory Fallon en el primer palo y desató la locura en Wellington. Tras el descanso, la selección asiática tuvo la oportunidad de igualar mediante un penalti detenido por Paston a Sayed Mohamed.

En África ha habido dramatismo, mucho dramatismo pero sin duda alguna irán selecciones clásicas como Nigeria y Camerún que se echaban en falta dejando atrás a Gabón y a Túnez.

Camerún ganó por 0-2 a Marruecos que ha decepcionado durante toda la clasificación. En el minuto 18 Webó recibe la pelota en la frontal del área y tras irse sin muchas dificultades de los defensores lanza al palo opuesto y tras tocar en él la pelota se introduce en las mallas. En la reanudación, minuto 52 Eto’o consigue hacer el segundo tras un córner rematado por Song y que él solo la empuja a las mallas ante la pasividad de la defensa que lo había dejado solo.

Egipto venció por 2-0 a Argelia y tendrán que jugar un partido de desempate el próximo miércoles en terreno neutral. El primer gol local llegó por obra de Zaki en el minuto 2, que tras varios rechaces del portero y la defensa pasiva logró inaugurar el marcador. Ya en el minuto 91′ Meteb tras recibir un centro desde el extremo izquierdo remató de cabeza al palo contrario.

Nigeria tras ganar por 2-3 a Kenya, y eso que los locales empezaron adelantándose a los 16 minutos con gol de Oliech que tras llegar desde la izquierda se plantó frente al portero y se la lanzó entre las piernas. Así se llegó al descanso y tras él apareció Oba Martins que en el 63′ logró la igualada tras una pelota que había quedado en el segundo palo y en la cual se adelanta al portero local. Tan solo tres minutos después, Yakubu hizo el 1-2 tras recoger un rechace que el mismo había provocado y adelantar a la Águilas Verdes. En el minuto 77′, Wetende empató con un buen cabezazo tras un centro desde la derecha. En el 83′ Martins Tras recibir un pase de cabeza remató de chilena – bien bien no se como le da- e introduce la pelota en la portería.

Repesca Europea

Grecia – Ucrania, partido que fue bastante aburrido salvo algunas jugadas que llevaron en ambos bandos.

Irlanda – Francia, el partido fue bastante igualado durante los 90 minutos con ocasiones para ambos equipos pero un combinación en la frontal acabó con un disparo de Anelka que tras dar en Dunne golpeó al palo y se metió en las mallas, dando una ventaja muy grande a Francia por lo visto en el partido.

Portugal – Bosnia, otra selección que se lleva un triunfo sin merecerlo mucho, Bosnia dispusó de varias remates al palo y de oportunidades claras para irse a casa con un festín de goles y un gol de Bruno Alves tras rematar con la cabeza un centro desde la derecha en el 32′ resolvió el partido.

Russia – Eslovenia, Bilyadetinov fue el encargado de materializar los dos tantos de los locales, el primero tras recibir el balón en el área y deshacerse de dos defensas en el 40′, el segundo en el 52′ tras recibir un pase de Arshavin y que un defensa el balón muerto en sus pies. En el 88′ Necik pusó emoción tras rematar de cabeza un despeje del portero.

Son más las Selecciones que en esta doble fecha de Eliminatorias, ya reservaron el pasaje para viajar a Sudáfrica el año que viene. Y acá les traemos, confederación por confederación, quienes están y estarán en el Mundial, y quienes comprarán el plasma para verlo por TV.

SUDAMERICA (4 plazas + 1 repechaje vs. América del Norte-Centro-Caribe)

Brasil y Paraguay ya estaban adentro, y este fin de semana se sumaron Chile y Argentina. Los dirigidos por Bielsa vuelven a disputar un mundial desde Francia ‘98 Uruguay será el equipo que juegue el repechaje contra Costa Rica a mediados de noviembre

NORTE – CENTRO AMERICA Y CARIBE (3 plazas + 1 repechaje vs. Sudamérica)

Estados Unidos ya estaba buscando hotel en Sudáfrica. También se sumaron México, cuya clasificación tambaleó hasta último momento y Honduras, que vuelve a la máxima competencia del fútbol, luego de su participación en España ’82. Como ya lo mencionamos anteriormente, Costa Rica definirá el repechaje contra Uruguay entre el 14 y 18 de noviembre.

EUROPA (13 plazas)

Al continente que más países le aporta al Mundial, le falta definir los sorteos de los repechajes (que se hará el 19/10). Los equipos que se emparejarán por los últimos cuatro pasajes de esta zona son: Rusia, Grecia, Ucrania, Francia, Eslovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Portugal y República de Irlanda. Mientras que los que se aseguraron su viaje a Sudáfrica son: Alemania, Dinamarca, España, Inglaterra, Holanda, Italia, Serbia, Suiza y República de Eslovaquia, cuya última participación había sido cuando formaba parte de Checoslovaquia (Italia ’90).

ÁFRICA (5 plazas + Sudáfrica)

Al continente africano le queda una fecha por jugar, con tres lugares disponibles para seis posibles equipos: Faltan definir los grupos A, B y C, de donde saldrán las tres plazas restantes. Los que si ya aseguraron su participación son Costa de Marfil, Ghana y el local, Sudáfrica.

ASIA (4 plazas + 1 Repechaje vs. Oceanía)

En Asia solamente falta el partido de vuelta del repechaje entre Bahrein y Nueva Zelanda (la ida fue 0-0. Se define en Oceanía) para cerrar con las eliminatorias. Mientras tanto, los ya clasificados son: Australia (por primera vez disputó las Eliminatorias en Asia), Japón, Corea del Sur y Corea del Norte, que regresa a los mundiales desde su participación en Inglaterra ’66.

OCEANÍA (1 repechaje vs. Asia)

Falta el partido de vuelta entre Nueva Zelanda y Bahrein, cuyo primer partido, jugado en el continente asiático termino empatado en 0. La vuelta es el 14/11 en Nueva Zelanda.

Después de haber pasado las eliminatorias a excepción de las repescas hay cosas dignas de mencionar. Me gustaría decir cuatro pinceladas de las eliminatorias en cada continente.

OFC, Oceanía

Aquí no ha habido sorpresas, y es que tras el cambio aussie – ha pasado a las eliminatorias asiáticas-, Nueva Zelanda que es la segunda potencia del continente se ha erigido como tal y selecciones como islas Fiji o islas Salomón, no se acercan a su nivel, – no muy elevado en cuanto al resto-.

Pese a esto tiene que acabar de jugar una repesca contra Bahrein, que en terreno asiático quedo en 0-0.

AFC, Asía

En Asia la mayor sorpresa la dio Bahrein al eliminar a Arabia Saudí, que no podrá ir al Mundial como hizo en 2006.

Australia y Japón quedaron encuadradas en el mismo grupo, y como era de prever pasaron sin muchos apuros. Bahrein, fue la tercera del grupo.

Corea del Norte y Corea del Sur irán “juntas” al mundial tras dejar detrás a dos cocos como son Arabia Saudí y a Irán, con lo que nos perderemos el talento de Noor, Hashemian, los osasunitas Masoud y Nekounam y un etc.. de sobre todo iraníes que han pasado y/o están en Europa.

CAF, África

En África Ghana y Costa de Marfil representarán la “África Negra”, a parte de la ya clasificada y realizadora del torneo Sudáfrica.

De los 5 grupos que hay, solo se han resuelto 2 y los otros tres tienen bastante que hablar.

Camerún y Gabón en el A tienen opciones de ir a la cita mundialista, los leones indomables dependen de sí mismos para estar allí y seguro que Eto’o, Emaná, Makoun y cia, no querrán que se les vuelva a escapar como ocurrió en el 2006.

En ese mismo grupo Togo y Marruecos han sido las grandes decepciones al haber hecho unas nefastas eliminatorias.

Túnez y Nigeria en el B son primero y segundo y los primeros son los que más opciones de ir tienen. Si pasa Túnez dejaremos de ver a jugadores como Yakubu, Kanu, los hermano Uche, y un largo etc… de conocidos Nigerianos “europeos”.

Argelia y Egipto en el C, son los que tienen opciones. Los argelinos tienen una escuadra bastante compacta y con jugadores cada vez más europeizados como Bougherra (Glasgow Rangers), Ziani (Wolfsburgo), Ghilas ex-Celta Vigo … Y de Egipto nos perderemos a Zaki, Aboutrika, Zidan….

En el grupo D, Ghana monopolizó las opciones dejando en la cuneta a Malí de jugadores como Kanouté, Diarra, Samassa, Keita, Dembele… Aunque claro, no nos podemos quejar porque Ghana no es una selección desconocida, bastantes jugadores son conocidos en Europa como Asamoah Gyan, Boateng, Mensah, Essien, Appiah, Muntari …

En el grupo E, Costa de Marfil arrasó en un grupo bastante accesible dónde Guinea la selección “a prior” más difícil fue la última con jugadores como Bangoura, Balde, Sacko, Feindouno…

NAFC o CONCACAF, América del Norte, Central y Caribe

Que en el hexagonal Estados Unidos y México no es una sorpresa para nadie. Honduras obtuvo el último pasaporte directo y dejó a Costa Rica, – selección habitual en mundiales-, a jugarse la repesca contra Uruguay. El Salvador, que tenía opciones de poder llegar al Mundial hasta las dos últimas jornadas, dónde lo perdió ha quedado quinta y Trinidad&Tobago ha decepcionado y es que tras ir al del 2006 y además sacar un empate, no ha logrado nada. Yorke, Scotland Jones y cia tendrán que verlo desde la tele.

CONMEBOL, Sudamérica

Brasil pese a no hacer el juego de antaño ha tirado de empleo y sacrificio y ha sido primera, seguida sorpresivamente de Chile y Paraguay, que se lo han merecido con buen fútbol y con dos entrenadores argentinos…

Argentina precisamente ha tenido que sudar la gota gorda y tirar de oficio y de alguna que otra suerte divina para poder sacar los partidos adelante. Si mejorán de aquí a Sudáfrica será una delicía verles jugar a los Tevéz, Riquelme (ojalá vuelva), Verón, Messi, Palermo …

Uruguay tendrá que vérselas con Costa Rica en la repesca. Forlán, Luís Suárez y cia tienen en su mano no perderse otra cita mundialista como ya les sucedió en 2006, cuando cayeron ante Australia.

De los eliminados decir que Ecuador y Venezuela han caído con la cabeza bien alta y lo han intentado todo, será una lástima no ver a loa Arango, Valencia, Miku, Jeffrén ( nosé si ha debutado en la absoluta, si alguien me lo dice lo agradeceré), Guerrón, Caicedo…

Colombia pese a tener buenos jugadores como Mosquera, Zapata, Rodallega, Falcao, Vargas, Perea, Rentería… no ha podido luchar por entrar.

Perú y Bolivia son un caso a parte, salvo alguna victoria de prestigo, como la de los peruanos 1 – 0 sobre Uruguay o Bolivia con el ya famoso 6 – 1 a Argentina, no han hecho nada. Parecen tener un fútbol estancado y sin progresos.

UEFA, Europa

En Europa ha sobresalido la gran labor de España consiguiendo el pleno 10 de 10, otras selecciones han hecho unas eliminatorias realmente buenas como es el caso de Holanda, Alemania, Inglaterra e Italia.

Dinamarca, Suiza, Serbia y Eslovaquia han dado una grata impresión en grupos dónde posiblemente no eran favoritos para ser primeros, ya que Portugal y Suecia con Dinamarca, Grecia en el de Suiza, Serbia en el de Francia y Eslovaquia con Polonia y República Checa, tenían menor posibilidad de ir.

De los que vana jugarse la repesca, decir que Noruega segunda del grupo 9, no irá por ser la peor de todas ellas.
Así que se la jugarán Francia, Portugal, Rusia, Grecia, Eslovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ucrania e Irlanda.

Personalmente, Eslovenia y Eslovaquia me han sorprendido gratamente, como Bosnia. Haciendo un fútbol bastante agradable a la vista.

Finlandia ha hecho un buen papel y se ha quedado con la miel en los labios al quedar tercera en un grupo bastante difícil.

Letonia ha enseñado la cabeza y en un grupo complicado ha quedado en una muy buena tercera posición.

Montenegro, ha jugado sus primeras eliminatorias como selección independiente y pese a haber quedado penúltima de su grupo igualada con Chipre y superando a Georgia, han conseguido su primera victoria y tan solo han perdido 3 partidos. Digno de mencionar en una selección dónde los más conocidos son Jovetic, Vucinic, Delibasic, Boskovic y Vukcevic, todos atacantes menos el último, centrocampista de contención.

Las selecciones que han expuesto su presente negro como Bulgaria, Polonia, República Checa, Turquía, Suecia, Rumanía, Noruega y Escocia tendrán que espabilar si quieren llegar a la próxima Euro, aunque los polacos ya estén clasificados.

Bélgica, Hungría e Irlanda del Norte tienen buenos planteles, y aunque no se haya notado en las eliminatorias darán que hablar.

Bélgica tiene prácticamente la base de los Juegos Olímpicos, con jugadores muy jóvenes y aún con mucho por crecer.

Hungría ha dado de que hablar en estas eliminatorias y es que no lo han hecho nada mal, luchando codo a codo con selecciones más potentes que las suyas, ahora a ver si jugadores de la sub 20 del mundial y que lo hacen bien, les acompañan.

Irlanda del Norte, desde que ganarán aquél famoso partido en Belfast a España, están creciendo bastante rápido no han tenido opciones matemáticas en estás dos últimas jornadas, pero van creciendo con jugadores como Lafferty, Healy o Evans al frente.

Wha's happeni-oh wrong show

The last day of qualifiers on three continents came and passed today.  In an effort to be more international – I guess – I’m going to try to hit all of them, especially since more of the story in Europe was already done.  (For the perhaps 1 of you who will read this in the absence of a gratuitous reference to a 80s-90s television celebrity, such as Perfect Strangers‘ Bronson Pinchot.)

The last two teams to secure automatic qualification clinched it today, both on the strength of just-barely-enough performances.  In weather conditons that can only be described as horrendous – or hysterical – Slovakia edged out Poland on the strength of an early own goal.  This was as expected, though the late challenge by second place Slovenia in the Slovakian capital last weekend transformed this match from a lame duck showing.

In sunnier climes, if one would like to refer to Basel that way, group winner Switzerland and Israel played to a scoreless and rather unexciting draw. (Though tell that to the Swiss fans in attendance.)  For the Swiss this was actually a rather close-run thing; had they lost by a single goal today, second-place Greece’s 2-1 victory over Luxembourg would have been sufficient to propel them into pole position.  Both Switzerland and Greece seemed to be playing surprisingly conservatively, or at least without a great deal of verve; but with a Greek attempt to storm into first place out of their hands all parties may have just thought it best to be slow and steady.

Portugal and Ukraine were the last teams to nab playoff berths without being in contention for their respective top spots.  Portugal gained a decisive (and inevitable) victory over Malta, while Ukraine did the same over Andorra.  On a personal note I continue to be infuriated with the lackluster play England exhibited in allowing Ukraine both to ruin their perfect record and edge out Croatia for the playoff.  I will undoubtedly continue to air this opinion at every opportunity.

As predicted, Norway was excluded from the second-place playoffs on the basis of weak group performance. Perhaps ironically, had Scotland not experienced their calamitous defeat to the Norwegians, or had they overcome the Dutch in their last meeting, it would instead have been the Irish Republic excluded. I mourn for the benighted Scots and their benevolent, long-suffering fans. But soccer, like politics and alcoholism, is an enterprise which worships always towards the dawn.

Second-place playoffs

You kiddin' me?!

The draws for the second-place playoffs will be next Monday. (I think…)  Because Sepp Bladder is a man I might only describe in a terms both inventive and exceptionally lewd, Europe will be having a seeding system for its playoffs.  The initial plan (though it was never shared with anyone, so how could we know?) was to have the eight second-place qualifiers randomly paired off, each to play one game at home and one away, with the overall winner of each to gain the final four places. However there is now to be seeding based on next week’s FIFA World Rankings, which orders teams by a variety of factors based on international performance. The top four teams will be placed in one pot; the bottom four teams in another. Teams will be paired only with those from the other pot, which assures that the “best” teams will face weaker opposition. These latter are furious, with Irish coach Trapattoni being especially vocal about it, but I don’t see Bladder backing down.

Almost assuredly, the high pot will consist of Russia, France, Portugal and Greece and the dregs with Ukraine, Ireland (I think we can dispense with this Republic business, yes?), Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. We don’t know who will be paired with whom, of course, so speculation is early, but some conclusions are possible. Russia will qualify, knocking out whoever is set against them with indecent ease. (I dreamed they would do so to Portugal… alas.) Besides Russia the ironic truth is that none of the top teams are that good. France took second in a weak group; had any of the virtuous thirds like Sweden, Finland or Croatia been placed with them I doubt they’d have come this far. Portugal and Greece are notionally strong and rallied towards the end. Greece didn’t face a really tough group, so they have to be rated as faltering, but Portugal really were in a bad neighborhood with Denmark and Sweden and should be credited with a late rally. They’re not as sure a thing as Russia but they’re odds of their failure are 3:1 against.

What about the “dregs”? Again, without pairings this is speculation, but none of the four were deeply-impressive runners up. Ukraine is notionally the strongest, but they were pretty eh. B/H did just well enough to beat failing Turkey and a Belgian team in almost as bad a shape as their country. They could maybe beat Greece but they’re not giant killers. Slovenia fought their way through a very tough group, and did so as unexpectedly as forcefully, but the fact that they overcame an evenly-matched group doesn’t mean they beat a good group. Ireland, however, have been turning in powerful performances and went undefeated in their group, nearly holing the Italians in the process. (And even at half-speed Italy are no slouch.) I like their chances best, and am in fervent negotiations with the Almighty to ensure they’re not paired against Russia. In the atmosphere Slovenia and Ukraine are balanced for second-best-second, Slovenia on hustle and Ukraine on talent, with B/H trailing behind.

CONCACAF

The North American section closed with a bang – indeed a veritable Soccer War – tonight as an excruciatingly-late stoppage time equalizer prevented the Costa Ricans from clinching automatic qualification in Washington, DC. A game at which I was not present. I didn’t know soon enough, I tell myself. I can’t afford it, I tell myself. And still wish I’d gone.

This was morally important for the US, as it left us at the top of the fourth round group (an all-important point above Mexico) in a week in which the US team was plagued with disastrous injuries. The last, a rather severe tendon issue with Oguchi Onweyu late in the second half, follows a day after Charlie Davies’ car accident outside the District and left the side Estadosunidense at ten men going into stoppage. Compounding the bizarre pageantry of the whole affair, Costa Rica’s coach Renê Simões was ordered off the field (along with an assistant) following some substitution clusterfuck – perhaps in view of the paucity of time left, the referee refused it and he got lippy. Retaliating, the referee left a full five minutes on the clock, allowing the Hail Mary goal that saw Honduras qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

Well THAT'S rather uncalled for

I didn’t see much of the Honduras game, but it was apparently tight and pretty brutal.  El Salvador could easily have tied it up and left Honduras (as I’d predicted) to slug it out with the CONMEBOL fifth-place. But now it is Costa Rica that will go in their stead. In soccer as in life, someone else always pays for your success.

By comparison South America’s final night was somewhat humdrum if you weren’t secreted away in a Buenos Aires suburb with a spicy Argentinian lover and a deactivated Blackberry/wife and kids. Argentina frustratingly managed a desultory goal in the 84th minute of play that turned out to be completely extraneous, given that Chile sent Ecuador quietly into the good night. A sad end to the city that hosted the first World Cup, but Uruguay’s night was tinged with hope, as Ecuador’s loss also guaranteed them the playoff spot against the fourth-placed North American side. Their dog will have its day in two matches against Costa Rica.

Playoff

I would generally rate Costa Rica the favorite. But Uruguay has done arguably better in an inarguably tougher milieu, and the endless series of qualifiers they’ve played starting two years ago has got to whet the appetite. Costa Rica will have something to prove, but the crushing nature of the draw to the US tonight has something to do with a sense of entitlement on their side.

But then again Uruguay’s wins haven’t been all that impressive. You get the sense Argentina rather deserved to go on if that was going to be their opposition. If Costa Rica faces similar they’ll seize the lifeboat of one of the last 2010 spots.

AFC-OFC playoff

Bahrain to win. Even if they weren’t a better team – it’s not clear – they’ll be away when they face New Zealand again, which means that a non-scoreless draw will see them through. I actually don’t know what happens if they draw scorelessly. Penalty shootouts, I imagine. New Zealand might have a shot there, as playing a tournament against Tuvalu and the Federated States of Micronesia must be very like practicing penalty shots.

La Confederación Africana de Fútbol tuvo un nuevo clasificado este fin de semana, se trata de Costa de Marfil, que amarró su pasaje con el gol de Didier Drogba para empatar 1-1 en Malawi.  Camerún esta a un pasito de regresar al Mundial.

Camerún y Gabón mantienen una dura lucha por clasificarse a la copa del mundo. Camerún si derrota a Marruecos de visita obtendrá el boleto, mientras que Gabón tiene que ganar en tierras togolesas y esperar que Marruecos cuando menos le saque un empate a Camerún.

This morning’s earnings call from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) echoes some of our concern of what is coming in the next wave of real estate problems which could cause the next wave of economic problems.  Commercial real estate.  This forecast by Jamie Dimon, along with profit taking in a down-market morning, is acting to hit large-scale commercial property stocks in REITs and in operating companies.  These are not the only stocks by any means in these sectors, but our go-to universe includes Boston Properties Inc. (NYSE: BXP), Liberty Property Trust (NYSE: LRY), Corporate Office Properties Trust Inc. (NYSE: OFC), Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE: SPG), ProLogis (NYSE: PLD), Digital Realty Trust Inc. (NYSE: DLR), AMB Property Corp. (NYSE: AMB), and CB Richard Ellis Group, Inc. (NYSE: CBG).  All of these are getting hit this morning.  We have provided some detailed information, brief technical analysis, and charts for each below.

Boston Properties Inc. (NYSE: BXP) is a $5.7 billion urban office properties REIT and its shares are down 1.3% at $47.17.  The 52-week range is $29.30 to $105.80.  This charts is at a critical juncture, or at least will be in a few days when those 50-day and 200-day moving average converge.  Shares are also at the top of a near-term trading range. Liberty Property Trust (NYSE: LRY) is a $2.4 billion diversified industrial and office spaces REIT.  Shares are down 1.25% at $22.95 and its 52-week range is $11.83 to $44.62.  Its stock is at a critical level as it passed its 50-day moving average yesterday and had been trading between its 50-day and 200-day moving average for most of the last month. Corporate Office Properties Trust Inc. (NYSE: OFC) is a $1.7 billion operator suburban office properties whose shares are down close to 2% at $29.73, and its 52-week range is $20.39 to $43.50.  This one has bounced hard over the last few days and is now back above its 50-day moving average.  Prior to that, its 200-day moving average had been acting as support. Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE: SPG) is the giant $12.8 billion large-scale mall and retail REIT.  Its shares are down over 1% at $50.12 this morning and its 52-week range is $24.27 to $106.43.  Where this gets interesting is that it is nested between its 50-day and 200-day moving averages and the 200-day moving average crossed under the 50-day average at the end of June. ProLogis (NYSE: PLD) is the giant owner of corporate warehouse and office parks worth about $3.4 billion, although that figure may be adjusted after recent refinancings.  With shares down 2% at $7.58, its 52-week range is $2.20 to $54.89.  Shares are still up considerably in recent days, but this one is still using the 50-day moving average as an overhang and is very far under the 200-day moving average.  CHART

Digital Realty Trust Inc. (NYSE: DLR) is a $2.8 billion technology-related real estate operator as a REIT.  Its stock is down less than 1% at $37.65 today and its 52-week range is $18.04 to $51.28.  This one is actually doing very well oin the charts and is well above its 50-day moving average and even much higher than that above its 200-day moving average.  CHART

AMB Property Corp. (NYSE: AMB) is an industrial properties REIT worth close to $2.5 billion.  While shares are down over 2%, it is still above the lower-end of a trading range of $16.50 to $18.50 of the last month.  But it has also not been able to get back above the 50-day moving average and that 200-day moving average is close to converging over the next week or two.  CHART

CB Richard Ellis Group, Inc. (NYSE: CBG) is the large $2.4 billion commercial real estate services firm worldwide. Its shares are down 1.6% at $9.07 and its 52-week range is $2.34 to $21.00.  As you will see in its chart, this one has been holding up well for over a month despite the pullback.  This is still above the 50-day moving average and is well above the 200-day moving average.  CHART

The good news that is in here is that these stocks are all so far under their former glory days that much of the bad data ahead ‘may’ be at least somewhat factored in.   We would also note that the concerns are not necessarily new concerns, but they are another reminder that the waves of problems here are still looming rather than being in the rear-view mirror.

As it has been a difficult sell to get the belief that the stock market acts as an effective discounting mechanism, we would still expect some of these to face more downside pressure if and when the problems start to arise later in 2009 on the commercial side.  Some have raised substantial cash and that will help to act as a cushion after the waves of REIT stock sales in May and part of June.

The blog title came from a slogan that was painted on the back of the players’ bench at the soccer field. Here it is.

I got off work at 9:30 p.m. Usually when I get off that late, I am feeling pretty good about an accomplished day. Today, I had a migraine.

Tomorrow is another full day, but I’m determined to get out of the office by 5, so that I can get to the city to have dinner with my family to celebrate my birthday. 21! I’m in the mood for sushi, though I think I’m the only one in my family that really likes it. Too bad for them haha.

Friday, I have taken the day off to travel to Tulsa with a few O’Collegians and our super kick-butt adviser, Barbara Allen. We will be listening to a member of the Washington Post speak. Should be cool.

Saturday, I shoot a wedding with my mom (LA Reflections) in Ada. I’ll probably be pretty tired after that.

Sunday, is going to really cool! I’ll have to miss church, unfortunately, but this is a one-time thing. I wont tell you yet – I’m sure you’re dying with anticipation… not! But I’m excited to say the least.

Monday, I start my last week of work at 7:30 a.m. and sometime this weekend, the Griffins get back to reclaim their house. They’ve entrusted me with keeping the plants and animals alive. I’m 100% so far.

It’s almost 2 a.m. (meaning I’ve been 21 for two hours…) I should get to sleep. You too!

MUMBAI, INDIA: In what could be one of the largest outsourcing deals in the Indian telecom space, Reliance Communications is close to awarding a $500-600 million (Rs 2,500-3,000 crore) operations and maintenance contract to French telecom infrastructure provider Alactel-Lucent, says a report in Business Standard. The contract would be either executed independently by Alcatel-Lucent or by the joint venture between Alcatel-Lucent and RCom formed in May 2008 for managed network services that would take on outsourcing contracts from global telecom operators.

On the GSM front, RCom will initially outsource the operations of five circles — Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Chhattisgarh — to Alcatel-Lucent.

The outsourcing deal also includes managing and strengthening RCom’s 175,000 km global optical fibre cable systems. The OFC system, of which 80,000 km is in India, is also used to carry international telecom data.

NEW DELHI: The government plans to connect every panchayat to a broadband network in the next three years and increase phone usage in rural India four-fold in five years, so that two out of every five villagers own phones, President Pratibha Patil told Parliament on Thursday. The measures will be part the Bharat Nirman programme for improving infrastructure in villages.

As of April end, rural India, which houses more than two-thirds of India’s population, had less than one-third of the country’s 430 million telephone connections.

The plans to improve rural connectivity will most certainly result in increased allocation from the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) for setting up telecom infrastructure in interior India.

Since 2002, all telecom operators have been paying 5% of their annual revenues towards this fund and so far, the unutilised amount in this fund has crossed the Rs 25,000 crore. The communications ministry will soon invite bids for setting up over 7,000 telecom towers in rural areas with support from the USOF.

The new government also plans to use a part of this fund for augmentation of the optic fibre cable network across the country to enhance broadband connectivity. Interestingly, India’s booming mobile phone industry is attracting more new users in rural areas.
