Say what they want to hear by not saying it

The task of answering the prompt succinctly and directly may actually be your worst enemy.  Read that sentence over if you have to, but it’s true.  If you’re writing your personal statement and a part of the prompt asks you to identify a very specific point  (i.e.: why you would be a good intellectual fit at the school, etc.), your essay should never directly restate the prompt or come anywhere close to restating it, for that matter. Say it implicitly.

Your written personal accounts should tell exactly why you’d be an excellent fit or why school X’s admissions director wants you without ever explicitly stating why.  If you find yourself unable to write out the perfect life item you think will get you into the program you desire, then you need to come up with another example, or you’ll surely end up with the boring and pitifully grammar school-esque “I would be an excellent fit because…” sentence.  

This in mind, you should venture off topic a bit if, in the end, you use your prolixity to make a point.  Don’t be intimidated at the prospect of going off topic.  After all, by simply writing down your thoughts, you’ll come up with more material than you need (a good problem to have) and you may just find your thoughts wandering enough to an even better exampleto address the prompt (another good problem to have).  If the prompt asks you to name a time when you overcame adversity, summing it up in one sentence just won’t hack it.  Expand your thoughts, including what you learned from your experience, how it has improved you as a person, why that will carry you through the next level of school or life.  Never be afraid to delve into details in an important aspect of your life.  If an event had a significant enough impact on you for you to be addressing it in a personal statement, you clearly don’t want to leave the reader with any questions because you felt that preemptively answering those questions would have taken your work down the wrong path.  Implicitly from all this, the reader will easily see exactly why you feel you’d be a good fit at their program.  They’ll be even more impressed when you’ve answered the question clearly and masterfully, but they have to remind themselves what the prompt was in the first place.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta provinces of Kien Giang and An Giang will organize a tourism promotion program in Cambodia from December 7 to 9.

The event, to be held in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, will showcase the images of the two provinces and HCM City and highlight HCM City’s tourism destinations.

Vietnamese travel firms will also have a chance to meet Cambodian authorities to seek investment in transportation, real estate, and tourism.

Before I talk about the subject at I hand, I have to post a link to “Man in the Mirror” by Micheal Jackson.

Forgiveness is something that heals all fears. Consider what happens when you make a mistake as a child and your parents forgive you, did you not feel better? Did you not learn from the situation?

Consider this, perhaps our minds have created a misconception of love. Love should not rise the distortion of hate, unless real love is not being accepted.

If I think I love my car then of course I will hate it if it is taken away, but I must look deeper at the situation. The car will eventually cease to exist, as will your body and all material things, so where is the love placed.

Perhaps the spirit is the eternal flame that is love. Love in it truest form cannot be anything else. Therefore anything else is not love.

If the mind is ill and in pain it is not in love. So the way to heal the mind is to forgive it for believing in illusion. Just like the only way to realize there is no Santa is to come to truth. As far as little kids are concerned.

I’ll give you an example of where forgiveness heals the mind.

Say I’m on the 91 freeway in sunny southern California and a motorist decides to cut me off, or doesn’t see me or whatever the case may be. I can look at this event from one solid foundation.

I believe that there is only perfect love, and anything else is a calling out for love. If I were completely absorbed in love someone would not be able to cut me off, because I wouldn’t be aware of something like that.

If I am aware and this happens to me I can see it in two ways. An opportunity for me to heal my mind, or an opportunity to express a lack of love has arisen.

If I come from the point of view of lack of love or fear, I will think the person did it do me on purpose, that the person is wrong, and that I have just become a victim. The victim mindset gets me nowhere. The rest of the day I can be brooding in illusion of pain that wasn’t really there. I know this to be possible because I have done it plenty of times. I have also accidentally cut people off and witnessed their reactions towards me.

Being on both ends of the stick I realized what was going on here. I am only in control of my reactions. Now if I decide to heal my mind, I would say to myself that I forgive that person for what they don’t know, and I forgive myself for believing in something that doesn’t matter.

Now, ponder on this, internalize it, this WILL heal your mind. It will disintegrated the spider web foundation of illusion.

Yes, this one is all about turning the TV off and doing something else, something better with the time you claw back from the idiot box. That might sound strange to people today – but I enjoy the fact that I don’t watch much television anymore. So much time is wasted in front of the television and there is plenty of other things to do.

To quote a television ad which I believe advertises the virtue of getting out in the world and fishing, etc, ‘that ain’t living.’

Reclaiming time from the box is a great idea.
