I had a minor dispute with my mother last week. She did something that she regularly does and this time I got annoyed and called her on it. She said “sorry” and I replied: “sorry means you won’t do it again, but you just keep on doing it“. She looked at me as if I

I'm sorry, means I regret upsetting you.

had ten heads and contested what I’d said and stated that an apology was not a promise or guarantee to not repeat the same process in the future, it was a term of regret. Now she is totally correct in what she said and it has got me thinking about apologising and the meanings behind it. Considering as when I was growing up and had to apologise for misdemeanours often enough which were regularly followed by the phrase (from my mother) “now, don’t do it again!” I had linked the two together and to me if I was genuine in my regret and my wish not to repeat the incident I would usually apologise fairly easily. However, if I wasn’t even slightly regretful of the misdemeanour and had every intention of repeating the process next time (but just not get caught out) my apology was less than half-hearted and barely audible to the recipient.

I often see children being told to apologise to their friends when they’ve been fighting, “Say sorry and become friends again” and often it is easy to see the resentment and embarrassment of having to apologise publically to someone else in their faces. Small children don’t often willingly apologise because they don’t feel guilty about what they’ve done. They live in the moment, see something, want it, go get it, upset someone else and don’t care, then (usually) an adult hears or sees the offended child getting upset and set off to rectify and correct the situation. But a small child has no concept of guilt and we have the un-enviable job of layering it onto them by asking them how they would feel if the other child took the toy on them, then we make them apologise, when they don’t see why they should and hand back the item to the other child again, leaving the offending child confused, angry and

Small children often don't understand the need to apologise

upset. And this in later life leads to children either refusing to apologise, and when they become adults still refusing to apologise as they see it as a sign of weakness instead of something they regret doing.

I’ve often heard people apologise and tell me afterwards that they didn’t mean a word of it, it was just a means to getting out of trouble or shutting someone up who was giving out to them. And the point behind that is they will continue to do what they know upsets those around them because they have no regret attached to the deed. On the other hand as already stated there are those who find it extremely hard or impossible to apologise, even for small things as they have associated an apology as a sign of weakness – only the wrong apologise and I’m never wrong – type of attitude and this can and often does lead to a complete breakdown in communication between people, which in time leads to more resentment as the injured party builds up resentments towards the person who won’t apologise. Over time the injured party either leaves or gives in, and while things return to a sort of normal there is still the resentment of “giving in to keep the peace” and over time that is a relationship destroyer, whether it is within a couple, friendship or work situation. Then there are the other apologisers. The people who say sorry at the drop of a hat and mean it. The people who don’t want to offend anyone and constantly apologise “just in case” they have offended someone. These

Do you spend your time saying sorry?

are people who often have issues around self-confidence or self-belief. I had one such friend who when she would say something would look intently at you to gauge your reaction and if she considered it bad she’d apologise immediately and if you called her on it would apologise for having apologised in the first place. Thankfully she no longer does that, it is as she reported quite tiring trying to second guess everyone else’s feelings and reactions, so much so that there is no time for your own.

So do you fall into any of those camps of apologisers and non-apologisers? I do apologise, when I feel the need to, and only then. Like when I bump into someone accidently, or if I knock something over accidently. Or if I am late for an appointment. And when I apologise I am saying I’m sorry to have inconvenienced you, or delayed you and I will put every effort into preventing that ever happening again. I rarely apologise for what I say, mostly because I consider what I say before I say it and I say what I mean and mean what I say. So on the (now rarer) occasions when I do get angry and say something I shouldn’t, I am aware that when I said it, I meant it, every word of it. I am, however (even a split second later) sorry that my words had a negative effect on someone else when I chose to let them have control over my emotions in the first place.

THIS PARTICULAR ARTICLE IS NOT MEANT TO DEGRADE ANY INSTITUTION, ORGANIZATION, BODY OR GOVERNMENT, B

THIS PARTICULAR ARTICLE IS NOT MEANT TO DEGRADE ANY INSTITUTION, ORGANIZATION, BODY OR GOVERNMENT, BUT SOLELY FOR THE PURPOSE OF ENTERTAINMENT.

Hyderabad. “Have you ever had a bl** j*b in public?” was the question that popped up on his computer screen when Ankit Agarwal was taking CAT 2009 online at the Hyderabad Business School center here. A shocked and upset Ankit looked around to find equally dumbfounded faces of fellow test takers at the center. A few minutes passed when all of them realized that CAT servers had been hacked.

“I found all the students straining their eyes and looking around with puzzling looks at each other, and I sensed that something was wrong. But I still answered the BJ question by choosing the option (b), which was in affirmative, assuming IIMs wanted to test us on some abstruse parameter, the next thing on screen was a middle finger, telling me I was a loser. I immediately knew that the servers were hacked.” Ankit recounted his harrowing experience.

Several centers around the country reported the same problem with the students asked absolutely ridiculous and offensive questions such as “have you ever slept with a transvestite?” and “will you mop up the poop of pet dog of your boss to get promotion?”, all of them ending with a middle finger on the screen when students cared to choose an available option. It was the first day of online CAT for admission to the six IIMs and many other well known and lesser known MBA institutes. online, exam, test

“IIMs are known to change the pattern of CAT quite often, therefore many students thought that maybe these questions had some hidden meanings. But we felt like losers once that middle finger appeared on the screen. I talked to many of my friends and all of them feel the same. The questions appeared to have been taken straight out of a show of Sach Ka Saamna.” Chetan Pandit, another CAT test taker shared his experience.

IIMs have called for an emergency meeting this evening to discuss the problem and to nail down the hacker, but the event has already caused huge embarrassment to them. Many students, who otherwise had bunked the online CAT to see movies, were seen demonstrating in front of the centers asking IIMs to go back to paper-and-pen tests. Thackeray guys too joined the protests and broke computers as a symbol of protest.

This unfortunate incident has also caused many test conducting agencies and internet security agencies to pitch for their services to IIMs and ask them to outsource CAT to them. These agencies have also approached Ministry of Human Resource Development with what they termed as ‘lucrative’ proposals.

Meanwhile the students are fuming over the possibility that they will have to take the test again, which is often touted as their ticket to a better life. Most of the students believe, and more importantly want their parents to believe, that they were performing exceptionally well at the test before the hackers struck and denied them an opportunity to change their lives.

I just got out of a meeting and it couldn’t have gone better if I had written the dialog for it. It was one of those meetings, where you are up half the night before, because of some short comings in the company you fear that the marketing department is going to be the one to blame. I walked in this meeting with the fear that my budget or team would be the company’s scapegoat for a bad month.

As I was about to sit down, I decided a last minute game changing play. I decided to go on the offensive with my own company. I started to actively throw in marketing options out for everything on our bullet list. I volunteered ideas I had in the back of my head that I didn’t really believe the company would invest in because they were long term goals and no instant ROI.

The strangest thing happen, my meeting with the board started getting excited at the ideas I was pitching. They stopped focusing on what the company had not achieved and focus on what it could. Our president got so excited that by the end of the meeting, he had launched a few ideas that I had pitched as his strategy to bring up sales.

I am so sorry for blogging about being tired, because to be honest I’m tired of just thinking

I am so sorry for blogging about being tired, because to be honest I’m tired of just thinking about how tired I am, so today I’m going to talk about nothing that just adds up to something (if that makes sense).

So, today the oddest and most annoying thing happened in physics today. Today’s lesson was about simple machines (and anyone, who knows Mr. Elliot knows that some of the things he says makes you think like if he should really be saying that), anyways there is always this one person in my class, who always has to take what Mr. Elliot says seriously (I’m not going to say who that person is because it doesn’t matter). Close to the end of class, the lesson started to go towards ramps, and being that person that he is, Mr. Elliot started talking about how the Egyptians built that pyramids (which is really interesting, but that’s not the point). After he explained how the pyramids were built, he got into this whole rant about how good it must be to be egyptian because they had so many slaves and never needed to really do any hard work because they had at least 100 people to do it for them. Being that it is Mr. Elliot, no one took him seriously, but that one person who always gets offended by what Mr. Elliot says. But this time, this person got so mad, that she stormed out of class (when the bell rang) and everyone else in class had that “are you serious” look on their face.

Sometimes, I wonder if it is really worth it to be offended by what someone says, you know what the truth is and getting offended is just giving that person more attention. To make matters worse, if that person is intentionally trying to offend anybody, don’t make a big deal about, just pull them to the side say they offended you and just move on. Don’t storm out of the classroom angry at that person, when they don’t even know what they did wrong.

Sooo yeah, I’m pretty sure that if you’re reading this you know my views on these two subjects. That’s the problem. I’m tired of bitching about it. Let this be an FYI of sorts. If you start bitching about some racist gay person who shunned you in some way or some ignorant person’s actions I’ll probably just look at you or respond curtly. Why? Because it’s a given that people are ignorant. Take the conversation or bitchfest you would be having with me and have it with the person that offended you.

With that said, I’m not necessarily going to stop talking about these subjects on my blog because at least here I don’t have to manage any kind of back and forth. I can just speak my peace and move.

What kind of message is this billboard sending out to people, especially children? This is absolutely disgusting and offensive to ALL women, regardless of size! Why isn’t there a ‘male’ in the picture in a swim suit? What, there are no ‘male’ vegetarians in the US?

If this is what they think of ‘women’, and overweight people in general, I have to question just how ‘ethical’ they really are! Go Vegetarian to lose weight, puh leez…..

I am not suggesting that everyone should eat meat, but not eating it is not the way to lose weight. Diet and exercise will work if it’s consistent, so will drinking lemon water! “Fit for Life” is an excellent ‘lifestyle’ that definitely works. It’s about ‘proper food combining.’

I have tried the ‘Fit for Life’ lifestyle and felt and looked great, but I did eat meat. I just didn’t eat a steak with a potato, salad or coleslaw and vege’s instead – no protein with a starch, period.

Anyway, I have nothing against vegetarians at all, so please do not misunderstand me. I was raised on steak and potatoes, what can I say! LOL! But really, come on, this billboard is an insult to the intelligence of all people for sure!

I wonder if they also own, or have shares in the US magazine that ET spoke of earlier tonight with a beautiful whale, and very pretty, but ‘overweight,’ black woman on the front? That was not well received either! Gee, I wonder why?! Again, not a ‘male’ in the shot!

We finally have the ‘full figured’ women of fashion on covers, inside a number of women’s magazines, and modelling, and these two companies pop up with this doo doo! Give me a break!!

I am very pleased to tell you that since PETA received so many phone calls and email complaints regarding their ‘tasteless’ signage, they had to replace it with this picture – like every overweight American is going to suddenly turn vegetarian, yeah right!

I had a few vegetarian friends in Alberta, two of which looked far too thin and unhealthy, and another that would be considered, ‘obese’, so there you go…..

Please take the poll I have placed below this post, and let me know what you think. I’d be interested to see if you agree with where I am coming from on this topic. Cheers!

Back in them thar olden politically incorrect years of the 1940s-50s, Harlequin Books published in a lot of genres, like any other paperback house, inlcluding softcore, westerns, crime noir, etc. Their romances were the most profitable and successful, so when things wound down in the 1970s, Harlequin went exclusive with romances, where they excel at and have the market’s lion share today.

Recently, Harlequin re-printed half a dozen of their old noir properties as a gimmick for the 60th anniversary. This seemed pretty cool, until I read here that the oh-so-bright editors there did some “fixing” to remove “politcally incorrect” matters, eschewing integrity, albeit

our intention was to publish the stories in their original form. But once we immersed ourselves in the text, our eyes grew wide. Our jaws dropped. Social behavior—such as hitting a woman—that would be considered totally unacceptable now was quite common sixty years ago. Scenes of near rape would not sit well with a contemporary audience, we were quite convinced. We therefore decided to make small adjustments to the text, only in cases where we felt scenes or phrases would be offensive to a 2009 readership.

Are these slap-happy bitches kidding? So I suppose it might be fine to edit out, or even re-shoot, scenes of guys smackin’ dames and dolls in The Big Sleep or a Robert Mitchum classic? How about The Big Valley, that S/M TV western?

Does this also include spanking? Do no Harlequin romances contain rough sex where women like to be slapped during a hard bang, or have rape fantasies in the dark hearrt of the urban sprawl?

When I read this, Iwas sorry I picked up Pardon My Body, because I was offended by Harlequin’s assumption.

Still, I tried to give it a read and couldn’t get past four pages. Perhaps I was poisoned at the start, or maybe they edited the good writing out, but I found the sentences dull and cliched. I’d rather pick up a Chandler, an Orrier Hitt or a Don Elliott…unedited and true.

And this is not a true vintage reprint. It’s a rewrite of an old book, as we can assume the otherd are, since

grammar and spelling standards have changed quite a bit in sixty years. But that did entail a text edit, which we had not anticipated. AND, we had to clear those adjustments with the current copyright holders, if we had been able to locate them.

And of course, the covers: Though we used the original covers, they had to be scanned and touched up.

Touch up the art and make the books look “new,” touch up the prose so readers won’t be confused and OFFENDED. Chinks become American-Asians and “twilight women” practicing sinful dykedom become “same sex partners seeking equal civil union.” You get the gist of what has been done here…

I’m sure the backlash Harlequin will get from true noir fans — and those who are offended by the company’s lack of honoring their true past – feedback that pretty much says: “F*%@ YOU.”

It’s how we feel here…just as, we’ll take the cover above over the cover below any day!

“Be like everyone – be natural.”

Now look – we may argue endlessly on the definition of “natural” – but keeping tons (literally) of animals enclosed in cages for the rest of their miserable (but thankfully short lives…) there is nothing natural about it.

These animals experience so much distress (yes, animals do respond to their environment) they engage in a violent or suicidal behaviour.

In the case of chickens, they would peck each other to death. As a precaution, the highly sensitive part of their body – the beak is seared of using a hot blade.

Let’s not even go into the vaccines, and carcasses mixed in the food, soy based feeding for all life, etc.

Talk about natural.

———————

(Additional: Be like everyone else? That explains why you’re not thinking before saying something…)

There is a practice today which I feel is equivalent to slavery in the history of mankind. It’s call

There is a practice today which I feel is equivalent to slavery in the history of mankind. It’s called animal farming. To a certain extent, I feel that it’s one of the darkest practices that still persist, even among developed regions of our world.

Which sort of made me begin a vegetarian diet. After being one for a year, I realised that I get into a handful of situations where I would normally not experience:

Whenever I tell my friends I’m a vegetarian, I get a range of interesting responses. Most of these responses are based on ignorance, but can be insulting nonetheless. Sure, I can come up with some witty responses, but I feel that a lot of my vegetarian friends tend to just accept their fate and go with the flow.

Not to say that my non-vegetarian friends are just being jerks who intentionally say hurtful things. Before being a vegetarian, I for one remember very well that I have been quite a jerk myself before (and possibly remain as one today.) Even though I may thought of it as a harmless joke back then, my friend might not have taken it the same way.

This really bothers me, so I don’t want this sort of things to happen again.

I think there is a need for me to share what I know and express how I feel – heck, I think everyone should – just so that we can all understand each other better.

Therefore, I’m on a crusade to straighten these folks up.

Yea – you heard that right.

What follows this blog will be a collection of responses which I have gathered over time. Along with some remarks and comments. MY remarks and comments.

Of course, there is a whole lot in the big picture that I am not seeing – so please, I may make mistakes here and there. Do correct me as you see necessary. I’ll thank you, and if you live nearby UNSW, I’ll treat you to a cup of coffee.

Oh and – what I say here may reflect on my undiplomatic and rude personality. Note that I’m usually benign and quiet in real life. And I smile like an angel. No, seriously.

Without further ado – I hereby present to you:

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the unsettled stomach of a 120-kilogram pig was to blame for a fumy false alarm near Bendigo on Tuesday night. Fifteen firefighters and two tankers rushed to respond to a report of a strong smell of gas after their pagers sent an alert about 10.30pm.

The area has been identified as one of the state’s most at-risk of bushfires and residents are able to use only bottled gas, thus increasing the risk of a blaze. But when the crews arrived at the house in Axedale 10 minutes later, the source of the offending smell was clear.

“When we got to the property where (the smell) was, these people had a pig; a big sow which was about 20 metres away from the house,” CFA captain Peter Harkins told Radio 3AW. “I don’t know what they were feeding this thing but we certainly heard it.”

Mr Harkins said firefighters had “done the right thing” in responding to the call. “Everyone’s a little bit toey with the recent hot weather we’ve had up here so we responded as we normally do,” he said. “All I can say is we followed through with our call.”

Mr Harkins said he had captained the rural brigade for “a number of years” but it was the first time they had been called to a farting pig. “We did hose it down a little bit. It was a little bit on the nose,” he said.

**seeing as this is my VERY first ever blog post, i should probably start it out with a warning. wha

**seeing as this is my VERY first ever blog post, i should probably start it out with a warning. what you are about to read may be considered offensive to you, your mother, your cousin, your dog, your boyfriend/ girlfriend, your religion, culture, or many other people/ things. it is NOT my intention to offend. if you are offended, i apologize in advance seeing as i, myself, have been offended by things other people have said in poor taste, but then again – i don’t really hold the standards i have for other people up-against myself. I KID! everything i say is NOT really how i feel. but you are more than welcome to send me hate email, if you’d like. also, i encourage you to not read from here-on-out. but it is your choice. i am, afterall, pro-choice**

i started working when i was 15. for some god awful reason i convinced myself that a job was a really great thing to have & i needed one. mostly, i think i believed that having a job made me more grown up than the mere 15 years old i was at the time.

[although, i have always sincerely believed i am a 47 year old woman, with no soul, mind you]

in my, almost, 9 years of gainful employment i have experience sexual harassment, gender discrimination, ageism & a host of other annoyances, issues, indiscretions, under payment, crying-fests, etc. etc. but i have never wanted to choke a bitch the way i do in the current position i … endure.

because i am a professional woman who would never name names [although not-so-professional that i wouldn't refrain from admitting that i want to choke a bitch] i shall keep “the bitch” anonymous. let’s just say it’s someone i see M-F between the hours of 8AM & 4:30PM.

now, i know what you are thinking… you totally checked out my lameass “about” page & learned that i call myself a feminist. this is true. but i am an equal opportunist feminist & this feminist believes & KNOWS that women can be bitches. i am not so self-righteous to think that it is degrading to call a woman a bitch. i mean, sometimes, it is just a fact. & you really can’t dispute facts, now can you? plus, i know i am a bitch, which is probably why i can justify calling someone else a bitch. i am a firm believer that if i am going to have what society believes is a negative connotation characteristic applied to myself than hot-damn i am bringing some other bitches down with me! besides, i don’t apply the bitch label to only women [that would be discrimination]

[here comes the equal opportunity part]

i have known many men that have been just as much bitches as women so.. there you go. i don’t discriminate.

before i go ahead any further, i should tell everyone who has chosen to read this [all one of you out there...] that i am long-winded. it’s a hereditary thing, most definitely. my mother is long-winded & her mother [my grandmother] is long-winded, &, well, i don’t know anything about anyone beyond that point being long-winded, but i imagine they are, too. with the knowledge of my long-winded-ness, i am going to spare you the long story

[in hopes that you will come back & read again, or not... what the fuck do i really care? i'm still gonna rant cause that's what i do & more than likely, said rant will be long-winded. just deal.]

so, in honor of my first blog post, here is the condensed version of my story.

the bitch says to me today “why are you typing so much?” ::: in an irritated & condescending tone, with implications that i am engaging in illegal activities [which i am not] :::

[mind you, i work in administrative & document control services. my job requires me to sit in front of a computer & type ALL-FUCKING-DAY-LONG & be glued to a seat that is more uncomfortable than an airport seat & if you know me at all you, you know i have a MAJOR complex about all things airplane-related ]

anyway, so she asks this retarded fucking question to which i choose not to respond for the mere fact that, if i do, i am pretty sure i am gonna push this woman down on the ground, pull her underwear up over her head, choke the bitch, & then kick her in the shins – for good measure, of course.

after having conversated this to a friend of mine, he informs me his friend is, quite frankly, an expert at choking a bitch. Her suggestion is as follows:

“If it’s your 1st time choking a bitch I suggest using ceramic supplies.

There’s wire tools that are very useful.”

i mean, if this admin gig thing doesn’t work out [which i already know it won't since i'm putting in my 2 week notice next month, SUCKERS] i could always consider employment as a bitch choker.

it’s always nice to have a backup plan, my parents have taught me this.

*i bet i could get wayne brady to be my future employer*

Let’s get right into this one. Let’s say, for example, that the word “green” offends you. The grass

Let’s get right into this one. Let’s say, for example, that the word “green” offends you.

The grass is green.

Oh whoops, I offended you.

Now, in this case, if you go whining about it to someone, they’ll tell you to shut the fuck up and get over yourself, because you’re an overbearing twat.

However, let’s take a look at some words that our idiotic excuse for a society has come up with in the last few decades, and their translations into normal English:

African-American (Black)

Visually Challenged (Blind)

Hir(s) (A stupid gender-neutral pronoun)

Deferred Success (Failure)

Negative Patient Care Outcome (Death)

When did we all become such fucking pussies? Not just for letting people invent these “words”, but standing by and letting them become acceptable?

African-American? First, not all black people are from Africa. Secondly, not all of them are American. But if you spotted say, a British black guy in America, Americans would all stumble over themselves to say “African-American”, and the guy would be thinking “Wow, these people are a bunch of cunts”.

Visually Challenged? This goes for all the other ‘challenges’ as well. Face it – these people are blind, deaf, or retarded. Their life isn’t a bloody gameshow, and I’m sure they don’t wake up thinking: “Oh boy, what challenges will I face today?” They don’t need your mollycoddling.

Gender neutral pronouns. There’s only one thing that these “words” do, and that’s neuter the English language. Hey, idiots – how much information is conveyed in a pronoun?

Don’t answer that, I’ll answer it for you: shit-tons. Way to fuck up the English language, assholes. Shut up and go back to using words that are well-established and everyone apart from you doesn’t have a problem with.

Deferred Success. Oh shit, look, they made a mistake, they fucked up and they failed. That’s their own damn fault, and let’s face it, some people won’t ever succeed. It’s called failing, and it happens to everyone. Keeping people inside their cushioned ball of “everything’s good, and everything’s fine” will just set them up for a big lovely fall (and probably make them into hobos, who will then try to fucking rob me).

Negative Patient Care Outcome. Wow, do I even need to tackle this one?
You’re obviously not going to offend the dead person, so this is obviously just one to stop your feelings being hurt. Aww, diddums. Face facts, you fucked up, someone died. Shit happens, you can’t absolve yourself by calling it a “negative outcome”. Deal with it.

To sum that up:

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

So anyway, that’s a small slice of the bunch of the crap that the PC Brigade has invented over the past 20 years. If any of you have been reading my posts for any length of time, you know that I’m a blunt twat who will tell it how it fucking is. So let’s continue.

What has this (and the benefits culture fostered by our lovely Labour Party) done for us?

Well, let’s trim this down into one sentence:

It’s given us a bunch of whiny, self-entitled idiots who think they can leech off everyone else because, I don’t know, they were born with a stupid finger and some missing ribs, and the Government has told them that they’re disabled (even though they really aren’t) and therefore entitled to the world being handed to them on a silver platter.

Okay, maybe that sentence was a bit long. Maybe they get a platinum platter as well – they are “disabled” after all.

But wait! That’s not everything!

We also have morons who think that everything they do is brilliant, even when it’s shit, because the schools were too afraid to let them lose the sack race, in case their feelings got hurt, and now they’re too sheltered to take it on the nose when someone tells them that they suck!

How brilliant is that? Somehow, we’ve managed to change a race of people with some common sense into a bunch of prats who cry when they stub their toe!

No wonder our males are being bashed around by women, when they’re being told that they’re worse than women, that they’re evil and malevolent and that women can’t possibly be that way, because they’re all sunshine and lollipops and can do no wrong (obviously).

Let’s put the reality check machine on full throttle now and destroy some PreConceptions:

Some people are destined to do badly.

Not everyone can be a doctor, lawyer, or politician.

You are probably stupid. You also probably suck.

You should also know how to deal with it.

Disabled people – they’re disabled, but they don’t need you to hold them all the time.

“Disabled” people – are not fucking disabled, tell them to get on with their lives.

Black people – are black. (Shock horror!)

There can be only one winner.

90% of the time, you aren’t that winner.

Affectionate gender-based terminology is not sexual harassment.

Women are not the same as men, no matter how much you wish that to be true.

Smoking – you don’t like it? Boo hoo, find somewhere else rather than forcing people out.

Jokes are funny – if you don’t like them, don’t fucking listen, okay?

If I offended anyone with any of that post - great!

Shaykh Muhammad Salih Al-Munajjid | Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 10 | Size: 1 MB
Praise be to Allaah Alone and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no Prophet. The Standing Committee on Academic Research and Issuing Fatwaas has reviewed the many questions and requests for fatwaas submitted to His Excellence the Grand Mufti and forwarded to the Standing Committee from the general trust of the Council of Senior ‘Ulamaa’ (no. 3825, dated 21/7/1420 AH). People have asked questions concerning the rulings on paying attention to and celebrating the European (Gregorian) millenium, and others matters pertaining to this event. It is sufficient for us to quote just two of the questions asked: In the first question, it is asked: “Nowadays we are seeing media reports about the events and preparations leading to the Year 2000 CE and the beginning of the third millenium. The kuffaar, Jews, Christians and others, are excited about this and are pinning great hopes on this event. My question, O respected Shaykh, is this: some so-called Muslims are also showing interest in this event and regard it as an auspicious time for getting married or doing certain things. Some of them are advertising this event in their stores and companies etc., in ways that are offensive to Muslims. What is the shar’i ruling on respecting this occasion, showing an interest in it, exchanging greeting on this occasion – whether verbally or by sending cards – etc.? May Allaah reward you with much good on behalf of Islam and the Muslims.”

So, the other night I was playing a game online, on a popular gaming site that is used by people world-wide. In the room I was in there was me & a couple other people, all bowling to earn our weekly badge. Now, you can chat with people while you play & I noticed that one of the other people in the room was, like me, Canadian. So, as you do, I said to her “I see you’re a Canuck! So am I!”

Now, to my astonishment, she told me that I had offended her! She said that she found the word Canuck offensive & that I shouldn’t refer to Canadians as Canucks…………..now wait a minute, I’m Canadian & I don’t find that word offensive. I quite like it, truth be told! So, this got me to wondering, are there other Canadians out there who find the word “Canuck” offensive? If so, please explain it to me cause I just don’t get it!

What exactly about that word is offensive? What does that word represent to you that you find offensive? As I have already said, I don’t get it, I think it’s a great word & I am proud to be a Canuck. How abooot you?
