I am so excited to use my wanted poster lesson with my 5th graders this year. The last time I used

I am so excited to use my wanted poster lesson with my 5th graders this year. The last time I used this lesson was in the fall of 2003 when I taught 6th grade. We are using two class periods for their research and I was able to schedule our time slots in the library.

In their tech classes, they are learning about how to use the library and subscription databases we have, as well as Microsoft Word. Our Mac laptops were updated over the summer and now have Office 2008. One of the features that I really like in Word is the Notebook Layout. This is such a great way for the students to organize their research information. The students are making 4 tabs: Basic Requirements, Choose 5 additional, Images, and Resources. The research counts for half of their grade and they will be uploading their docs to a workspace on our server when they are done with their research, instead of printing it out. The wanted poster will be the only sheet of paper that they are physically handing in.

For the wanted poster, they have to create one really strong sentence, almost like a slogan or catch phrase. If someone were to look at their poster and not read anything else, they should be able to tell someone why that scientist is famous or what their important contribution was. They have to have their sentence approved before the end of their second day of research. So far, some of the sentences have been really wordy or have not really pinpointed what that scientist accomplished. For example, John Glenn was the oldest man to go into space. Yes, but is that what he’s really famous for? Dig deeper. Or “So and So won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1962.” Well, for what? What did he or she do that lead to the Nobel Prize? I really want them to zero in and focus on the important details, then add the rest.

My catch phrase this year is “Chew it up and spit it out”. In essence, get to the main idea. For example, when they do vocab and give these long rambling definitions, I ask them (with a smile) – ”Can you remember all that? Because I can’t.” Process that information and put it into your own words so that you can remember it. So for their project, we are going to process all their information and make one strong sentence about their scientist. Chew it up and spit it out. The details will be added later and make up the rest of the poster.

Das Office for Mac 2008.

Ashampoo PowerUp 2009
Ashampoo WinOptimizer 5
Ashampoo Photo Optimizer 2
Ashampoo Photo Commander 6
Ashampoo Music Studio 2009
Ashampoo Office 2008
Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009
Ashampoo Burning Studio 2009 Advanced

The folks at the wikidot.com site have put together a nice list of application compatibility (or not) with Apple’s new OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” release.

“Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Compatibility List“

Don’t see any big “show stoppers” for me or my particular client base so far. Frankly considering the “under the hood changes” looks like they did a pretty good job in not breaking a lot of “older” stuff. Maybe Microsoft could learn a few lessons here?

Of note:

Adobe CS4 is officially supported. CS3 is reported to run with a few minor bugs…hopefully Adobe will be all over this (maybe??).

Office 2008, make sure you update to SP1 or better (you should anyways, duh) to address reported performance issues. Hey just get OpenOffice or even better (IMHO) iWork ‘09 and get back to work.

QuarkXpress 8.1 is officially supported. v7.3 is reported to work, but they don’t officially support it?

Quicken 2007 will run under Rosetta. Ugh, IMHO try GNU-Cash anyways

RealVNC is reportedly horribly broken under 10.6.

RapidWeaver, current versions are okay (cool!).

Microsoft RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) v2.01 (latest) is fine (very cool, I use the heck out of this one).

Server Admin 10.5.3 is listed as a no go? I hope the newer versions are fine?

SuperDuper has minor bugs (see note), I know they are reportedly working on a version for 10.6. (it just came out, get v2.6)

Toast – latest version has some issues. I would expect them to release an update soon.

VirtualBox v3.0.4 is okay under 32 bit kernel. Okay, what about 64 bit? Mixed info on whether Snow Leopard boots 32 bit by default?

That’s just a few things that caught my eye in a quick glance over this list.

Eu e o Thiago Zavaschi chegando no evento

The wait for an application to go online is long and frustrating one. It’s akin to waiting for Santa to bring that new Yamaha keyboard or Hawaiian Barbie you’ve always wanted.

Except of course, instead of Santa we have Apple – a slightly less friendly figure. Not jolly with a beard, red face, white hair and velvety red garments but thin, serious, donning black polo neck, jeans and a polished aluminium outlook on life.

Apple Claus may not give you a present this Christmas. Perhaps you accidentally opened Office 2008 this year. Maybe you eyed up a Zune MP3 player and thought “hey, that’s a really nice bit of kit”… (okay, that one’s unlikely – try finding a Zune anywhere). Apple Claus may also just think you don’t deserve the present because you’re not cool enough.

So here we are – PawPaw’s Christmas starts now. We’re all laying in bed with one eye open, hoping Apple Clause will see it fit to grant us our wish of Farm Idol passing the review stage.

Let’s just hope he didn’t see us playing with that XBox briefly the other day…

In my article Macs in the Enterprise: A Firsthand Tale, I mentioned the hardship I was having dealin

In my article Macs in the Enterprise: A Firsthand Tale, I mentioned the hardship I was having dealing with editing documents directly from a SharePoint site.

As a result, I can only perform the most basic of tasks. I can upload and approve documents, but I can’t edit a document directly on the server as I can if I’m accessing the library on Internet Explorer and a Microsoft SharePoint-compatible application. It’s kind of a pain downloading and re-uploading documents when the changes are relatively minor. Later this year, Microsoft is planning on adding the ability for Office 2008 to interact directly with SharePoint, so that might help.

That functionality was part of the recently-released Service Pack 2 for Office 2008. Specifically, you can now check out, edit, and check in documents directly on a SharePoint site. I had a few moments today to test it out and here’s my report from an hour or so of testing.

Before I get too far into the SharePoint tools, I wanted to talk about the speed increases. I have a 2006 MacBook with 2GB of RAM. Even running the latest version of Office 2008, my load times were fairly long. I’ve noticed a significant improvement with SP2. I didn’t do any time tests, but they feel about half what they were. They certainly patched in more snappy.

Without getting into the PC/Mac debate too much, I’ll just say how Microsoft (s msft) has integrated SharePoint within Office 2007 for the PC is amazing — I can even launch workflows on documents. The Document Connection Tool, however, earns an enthusiastic “Eh, well, it’s not bad.” Granted, I can finally edit a document on the site without jumping through a lot of hoops, I still can’t manage workflows and approve documents for publication. It’s not a big omission; I can do those just fine from the browser.

While the Document Connection Tool is a standalone program, you can access it from the File menu in Word and PowerPoint (oddly, I did not see the option in Excel).

The Open From Document Connection Screen

The first time you launch the program, you’ll be greated with a blank window. Choose “Connect to a SharePoint Site…”

A blank Document Connection Screen

Enter in your SharePoint info.

Entering in your SharePoint information

You can also connect to an Office Live Workspace (an online collaboration tool similar to, but not exactly like, Google Docs). Regardless of which you connect to, you’ll manage your documents in this screen (for Corporate Security reasons, I’m showing the connection to my personal Office Live Workspace, not my company’s SharePoint site).

Managing Documents

You manage documents in either location similarly. The biggest difference is in SharePoint you click “Check Out” to edit a document; in Office Live you click “Edit.” In terms of working with existing workspaces in Office Live, the Document Connection Tool is adequate. When it comes to managing those workspaces, it’s not that great. While I can upload a new document to an Office Live workspace (its version of folders), it doesn’t appear I can create new workspaces or delete documents (the “discard” button is grayed out).

Also, these tools seem to assume you have an Internet connection. There doesn’t appear to be any sort of offline syncing similar to Google Gears — while the press release claims offline document caching, I haven’t seen where the cache files are kept, and the only way I’ve been able to open a cached file is from the Recents menu. However, that’s from testing with Office Live, I didn’t test with my production documents on my SharePoint site.

While the Document Connection Tool is a good first step, there are a few things I’d like to see added: the ability to approve documents and manage workflows on a SharePoint site, and the ability to check out a document from both SharePoint and Office Live for offline editing — or make it clearer where I can find them.

While most of the blog coverage on the recent Office 2008 12.1.9 Update focused on the patching of Word vulnerabilities, considerably less attention was paid to what seems to me to be a much more important aspect of the update: Exchange Web Services support.

Entourage Web Services is Microsoft’s upcoming attempt to “achieve greater parity between Entourage and Outlook.”

According to Microsoft’s Description of the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.9 Update, this update is a “prerequisite for the installation of Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac Web Services Edition” and will have to be installed before the Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition can be installed.

Microsoft will be abandoning CalDAV for Exchange Web Services (EWS), which should offer better “performance, compatibility, and reliability” since EWS allows Entourage to shift the bulk of the ‘heavy lifting’ to the exchange server, rather than relying on the client to carry the load as it does now. It will also allow for the syncing of Tasks, Notes, and Categories with an Exchange server and will use EWS & HTTP to resolve names from the Global Address List, among other features.

Entourage for Exchange Web Services requires Exchange Server 2007 running Service Pack 1 with Update Rollup 4 or greater. Clients need to be running OS X 10.4.9 or later and the 12.1.9 update for Office 2008 for Mac, plus the Entourage for Exchange Web Services Edition (once released). More information on the Entourage for Exchange Web Services Edition can be found at The Office for Mac Team Blog.

Entourage Web Services is still in the beta stage, however, and not yet available to the general public. Its inclusion in the 12.1.9 update seems to imply that that may soon change.

Update to version 12.1.9 of Office update using the Auto-Update tool, or download the 12.1.9 update directly from Microsoft’s support site.

As with all software updates to mission critical software, please be careful.

Accessing shared folders & calendars is one of the handiest features of Exchange services. Unfortunately, Entourage doesn’t handle shared folders quite as gracefully as some would like. When trying to access folders or calendars shared through MS Exchange accounts, it’s not uncommon to receive the following error:

“The user’s folder could not be found. Entourage could not find a mailbox for the user User_Name“

This error occurs even though the mailbox does exits & the user followed Microsoft’s directions to the letter – as found here.

There are a couple of potential causes for this error, but the most consistent workaround is to point Entourage directly to the URL of the shared calendar or folder rather than leaving Entourage to try & find the path itself.

Note: You may need to contact you system or exchange administrator to get the full URL of the calendar or folder in order to complete the steps below…

Use the full URL to open the shared calendar

Click File, and then click Open Other User’s Folder.

Click Find user.

Click Advanced.

Enter the user name & email address for the calendar you would like to access.

Type the full URL to the user’s account and Exchange server.

(The URL should be in the following format: https://exchange.<ServerName>.com/exchange/<EmailAddress> )

Click OK.

On the Type menu, click Calendar, and then click OK.

It typically takes some time for the calendar to fully synchronize with the events on the server. Be patient.

More detailed information on this issue can be found in the following Microsoft knowledge base article (The article refers to Office 2004 but is still valid for Office 2008).
