Foxit Reader Pro v3.1.4.1125 | 5Mb

Foxit Reader is the only eligible alternative reader/viewer for PDF files (eBooks). It’s free, smaller, faster, and cleaner. And it starts up immediately, so you don’t need to wait the annoying “Welcome” screen to disappear. Foxit PDF Reader is extremely easy to use, just double click it to start and then click open button to open your PDF document. If you want to print, click on “Print” button. If you want to setup the page layout for printing, select “Print Setup” from “File” menu. Foxit Reader supports Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/Windows 7. Unlike Adobe® Reader, this one has size about than 2.5 MB, needs no installation and opens up immediately. You don’t need to go throught lengthy installation process to start using Foxit PDF Reader, just UNZIP the downloaded “pdfrd.zip” package into any place you want, then run PDFReader.exe. You can set Foxit PDF Reader as your default PDF reader, so you can double click on PDF files to open them within Foxit PDF Reader.

The following is a list of compelling advantages of Foxit Reader:
• Incredibly small: The download size of Foxit Reader is only 2.5 MB which is a fraction of Acrobat Reader 20 MB size.
• Breezing-fast: When you run Foxit Reader, it launches instantly without any delay. You are not forced to view an annoying splash window displaying company logo, author names, etc.
• Annotation tool: Have you ever wished to annotate (or comment on) a PDF document when you are reading it? Foxit Reader allows you to draw graphics, highlight text, type text and make notes on a PDF document and then print out or save the annotated document.
• Text converter: You may convert the whole PDF document into a simple text file.
• High security and privacy: Foxit Reader highly respects the security and privacy of users and will never connect to the Internet without users’ permission. While other PDF readers often silently connect to the internet in the background. Foxit PDF Reader does not contain any spyware.

Foxit Reader Pro is the professional version of Foxit Reader, the popular free PDF reader.
Foxit Reader Pro supports all features provided in Foxit Reader, and includes the following functions:
* Annotation
* Text viewer and text converter
* Form filler
* Spell checker
* Advanced editing tools, including loupe tool, measure tools, image tool, file attachment tool, link tools, annotation selection tool, and more

Actually without Pro Pack, you are still able to annotate a PDF document and print it out. However when you save the annotated document, it will be stamped with an evaluation mark on the top-right corner of the annotated pages. If you purchase a Pro Pack add-on, then there will be no evaluation mark.

What’s new in Version 3.1:
New features:
* Internet Search. Foxit Reader 3.1 supports internet keyword search. You can select the text and click the pop-up search icon or press and drag the mouse directly to search for the related information in internet.
* Favorite Toolbar. Foxit PDF Reader 3.1 supports to customize the useful tools to appear in the Favorite Toolbar area, so that users can choose the tools that are used most often easily and quickly.
* Comments Panel. Lists all comments in the PDF document, and provides a number of common options that helps users check their comments better, such as expanding or collapsing all comments, as well as sorting comments in different ways.
* Summarize Comments. Allows users to generate a new PDF document with comments summary and set the document properties, such as paper setting, page range choosing, and so on. It is a convenient way to get a synopsis of all the comments associated with a PDF.
* Document Restrictions. Now users can view document restrictions by clicking the Security tab in the properties dialog box. The document’s Security Method restricts what can be done to the document, and the Document Restrictions Summary displays a list of tasks that users can perform.
* Supports MSAA. Part of user interface elements supports Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA), that is, to deliver the UI information to the MSAA client-side.
* Streamlined UI. A completely redesigned UI with a new look and feel that makes Foxit Reader more intuitive than ever before, such as updated icons and the reclassified menu bar.

There’s this “devil’s advocate” side of me that is rejecting out of my paw my intent to move my résumé to Google Docs. It claims that I am not thinking off the end of my nose.

Am I forgetting that job hunting is a dirty game, and that victory goes to the candidate who is fastest at getting his/her qualifications into the brain of the HR manager?

Let me recap. I have fifteen seconds from the moment my résumé hits their hot little hands to tell the HR manager what I can do for their company. Is it wise to waste five to ten of those precious seconds showing them a hyperlink and telling them to click it?

The Google Docs idea still feels good, and I still need to give it its day in my court. So what I’m most certainly going to do is get more practice with Google Docs. Not just the actual writing of WP docs and spreadsheets and slide presentations, but actually inviting other people to doctor them up with me. I need some lab partners from elsewhere in the Lower 48.

My immediate plans

I’m already doing my emergency number-crunching. I figure I’m already sitting on enough money to pay my December rent, and the last two paychecks should easily take care of the of the credit cards, utilities, and payment and insurance for Ooo Shinee. December is good, but I’m already thinking about January.

Question is, in light of how ProTeam Staffing could conceivably have a new work assignment waiting for me next Monday, how fast should I get on the horn to the unemployment folks? I probably should do it tomorrow to get the benefits going for the latter half of December.

More news as it breaks.

OK. I am curious.

No. Not Yellow. Or Blue. Or even George.

I’m curious about this fad that’s shown up in a lot of online (and, I presume, TV and print) advertising lately. The fad for running single words into two or more lines. I’d like to know where it came from and, if I step on it hard enough, can I kill it?

Like in the ads for the energy drink (not the most potent one, water):

I can only assume that, late one fine 11th hour before a deadline on Madison Avenue, a stressed graphic artist tried to run too many letters into too small a text box, thereby:

A.  Revisiting the joke about planning ahead that has to be at least as old as the wooly mammoth;

B. Reliving the experiences of a gazillion ten-year-old kids and their first experiments with fonts in The Software That Shall Not Be Named®.

The graphic artist, being desperate, pitched his broken-word “design” to the client – who bought it.

And now it’s spreading faster than H1N1.

It has to be stopped. Has to be, I say. Before it catches on in the blogosphere.

One of my major work projects at the Fremont offices of Aquent Studios in Seattle was working on Microsoft Office ‘Greenbooks’. These are heavy, in-depth books for IT professionals, guiding them to squeeze every ounce of features from enterprise software packages. Many in-house writers put together books for on-demand publishing for sale at Amazon.com. Yours truly did a lot of formatting, layout work, and editing to bring these books to market.

The first batch of eight or so of these Greenbooks is now available for sale on Amazon.com. While I helped create them using tools such as Microsoft DX Studio, Word 2007, Adobe Acrobat, I won’t see any credits, of course…

Here’s the cover design of the newly released Greenbooks, one of the large ones, Deployment for Office SharePoint Server 2007:

Deployment for Office SharePoint Server 2007 Greenbook. Isn't he handsome? I'm so proud.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: However long the final pre-pdf version was, the print-on-demand version had to be numbered as a multiple of 16.

Microsoft has fired its latest salvo at Google, announcing a free web-based version of its Office software.

Office 2010 will include lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote when it ships next year.

The new web offering will compete with Google’s free online Docs suite launched three years ago.

Last week Google took aim at Windows with news of a free operating system while in June Microsoft introduced a new search engine called Bing.

“We believe the web has a lot to offer in terms of connectivity,” Microsoft’s group product manager for Office told the BBC.

“We have over a half a billion customers world-wide and what we hear from them is that they really want the power of the web without compromise. They want collaboration without compromise.

“And what they tell us today is that going to the web often means they sacrifice fidelity, functionality and the quality of the content they care about. We knew that if and when we were ever going to bring applications into a web environment, we needed to do the hard work first because we hold such a high bar,” said Mr Bryant.

Microsoft said that 400 million customers who are Windows Live consumers will have access to the Office web applications at no cost.

After a brief weekend hiatus in Canada to attend a friend’s wedding (beautifully planned and executed in St. Catharine’s, Ontario), I return to week two of unemployment.

Monday – I wish I was lying when I say that almost the entirety of today was spent scouring for a replacement copy of my Microsoft Office programs. After several phone calls, first to Apple Technical support, then to the Apple store where I first purchased this beautiful Macbook, then to Microsoft, and finally to Microsoft Product Replacement, I went with plan C… bum a copy off a friend (“A” would have been to find my original CD).

Finally, I now have a working computer, AND programs to create/edit resumes and cover letters… so what if it’s the 2004 version? As of tomorrow, I will be back in business and oh so excited to finally get this job hunt under way.

Microsoft Office has been an undisputed king as far as office packages are concerned. However

Microsoft Office has been an undisputed king as far as office packages are concerned. However, OpenOffice has recently become a great competitor for MS Office since couple of years. Another niece piece of work is “SSuite Office – The Fifth Element“, although this package is still needs some work to be done till it becomes a real competitor in office software category. Also it is a window based software so we are not going to discuss on this. However, if you are looking for a package which is small …..as small as 2.5mb then try Tiny USB Office.

1. OpenOffice

OpenOffice is really a true substitute for MS Office and has all the features MS Office has. It contains broadly following constituents:

- Writer for word processing (substitute for MS Word)

- Calc a spreadsheet application (substitute for MS Excel)

- Impress a presentation application (substitute for MS Powerpoint)

- Draw a great flowcharting and drawing application (substitute for MS Visio, not a component of MS Office)

- Base a database application (substitute for MS Access)

Besides these it has other small applications built in. Unique and most striking feature of Open office is its seamless compatibity with MS Office and also amongst its own components unlike MS Office.

Download open office.

I feel that Open Office can be used as first choice for replacing MS Office. However, there are certain variants of OO i.e.

GO-OO

As per the site of GO-OO, it is basically more polished version of OO. You may give it a try.

Download GO-OO

2. AbiWord

AbiWord is a substitute for MS Word and surprisingly it is small yet fully featured.

Download

3. Gnumeric

Gnumeric is a substitute for MS Excel and it has a lot of features and functions which even MS Excel is missing (but that is true with Calc also).

Running an office can be a difficult task for any office manager. If you are a business owner, you may want to consider using office management software to assist your office manager. If you are an office manager, you may want to suggest office management software to your supervisor.

As nice as it is to hear that office management software can simplify many office management procedures, you may be curious as to how it is done. For starters, it is important to realize that office management software is designed to simplify the process of office management. This often involves integrating a number of computer software programs and features all into one program.

Before examining some of the many features found on office management software, it is important to remember that there is a variance. With that in mind, many office management software programs have easy to use email programs, downloadable and printable customer invoice templates, as well as customer payment record programs, document templates, editable to do lists, and much more. This easy access to important information and documents will allow your office manager and possibly other staff members to prioritize and improve their productivity.

If you like what office management software can do for you, you may want to start shopping right away. Before doing so, it is important to remember that office management software comes in a number of different formats. If this is your first time purchasing office management software, there are a number of points that you will first want to examine. These points, a few of which are outlined below, can help to ensure that the office management software program purchased is the software that is best for you, your business, and your office manager.

As previously stated, office management software comes in a number of different formats and different versions. It is important to choose a software program that you and your company can benefit from. That is why it is important to examine all software features. For instance, if you run a medical office, invoice templates and a payment tracking program may be needed software features. If your office is large is size, it may be best to choose an office management software program that involves networking all office computers together or a web-based program for home based workers or those who regularly travel.

In addition to seeing in print what services and features are included with the purchase of office management software, it is also important that you see for yourself. Many office management software suppliers have video tutorials that show you how the software program works or they should at least have screenshots for you to examine. Be on the lookout for software programs that seem too complicated to use, as they may not be in the best interest of your company or your office manager.

In keeping with examining office management software yourself, if you are able to find an office management software supplier who offers free trial periods, you are urged to accept their offer. Even if the free trial period is only for a week, it will give you or your office manager the opportunity to determine if you can profit from the use of the software program in question.

Another step that you should take, particularly before making any office management software purchases, is that of comparing prices. After a close examination, you will find that many office management software programs are sold by multiple suppliers or online vendors. Searching for the best deal will enable you and your business to achieve a larger return on your investment.

The above mentioned points are just a few of the many points that should be taken into consideration, when examining office management software. Even if you are unsure as to whether or not office management software is right for your business, it is advised that you and your office manager at least take the time to examine your options. You may be surprised with what you find.

Open Office Logo

Early on Sunday morning, the OpenOffice.org Community passed the ten million downloads mark for the latest version of its software, just four weeks after the launch on October 13th. The week also marked the first time the OpenOffice.org Annual Conference has been held outside Europe.

November 10, 2008 — Early on Sunday 9th, the OpenOffice.org Community achieved an historic milestone, when the ten millionth person clicked on the “Download OpenOffice.org” button since the Community announced version 3.0, just four weeks ago. The week also saw the first time the OpenOffice.org Annual Conference has been held outside Europe, with over four hundred people attending the Conference in Beijing, China from Wednesday to Friday.

John McCreesh, Marketing Project Lead, explained the importance of the two events. “Since the launch of OpenOffice.org 3.0, we have had a verifiable record of downloads from central website. We were delighted to hit a million downloads in the first two days. Four weeks later, we have hit ten million, and we are still seeing an amazing 250,000 – 350,000 downloads a day. For a community with no advertising budget, this is an astonishing level of product awareness around the world. Add to this the success of our Beijing Conference, and there can be no doubt that OpenOffice.org is now genuinely a global phenomenon.”

What makes the statistics impressive is that they only record downloads via the OpenOffice.org website, and exclude for example large numbers of Linux users who generally download software from their own distributor.
There are estimated to be eight million users of Ubuntu Linux alone, the majority of whom rely on OpenOffice.org for their office software. In addition, many users obtain OpenOffice.org via other mirrors, peer-to-peer networks, CDs, or other media. The total number of OpenOffice.org users worldwide is not known, but the Community believes it is well on track to reach its declared target of a 40% market share worldwide by 2010.

Finally, even with this level of market acceptance, the Community is not complacent. The OpenOffice.org Bug Bounty Programme is still open, offering cash prizes of up to 500 Euro to new developers who help fix bugs reported by users. This is part of ongoing activity to encourage additional developers, which has already resulted in a record number of contributors working on the 3.0 release.

Since it was released into the wild last month, there have been 10 million downloads of Version 3.0

Since it was released into the wild last month, there have been 10 million downloads of Version 3.0 of the OpenOffice office suite, or close to 300,000 people per day.

I am a big fan of freeware and I took great joy in the day I uninstalled Microsoft Office and replaced it with OpenOffice. Being able to use nimble, free software that could be saved in either Linux or Microsoft format meant that I had no reason at all to keep the software of the animated paperclip on my hard drive. I used the space saved to expand my music collection.

Regardless of its success, it is a constant puzzle as to why more Africans and Kenyans are not using OpenOffice. Why are we shackling ourselves to proprietary software when we could be using something that is not only open-source but also free?

It may be laziness because Microsoft Office comes preloaded on some Windows machines, or people may be reluctant to try software that seems unfamiliar. But isn’t all software unfamiliar when you first use it? OpenOffice is not actually that difficult to get to grips with, and anyone familiar with Microsoft’s offering will find adjusting to the GUI very easy.

So if you have 440MB to spare and you’re interested in using an alternative to the usual office suites, download OpenOffice today! You have nothing to lose but your dependence on a certain software monolith.

Frightened out of my gourd that something prohibitively expensive could be going down with Oooh Shinee, I took the car to AutoZone and got it scanned. The thing causing the “Service Engine Soon” light to come on was my lack of a gasoline cap. This lets air into the gas lines. The counter man there didn’t have one of the less expensive non-locking caps, so he sent me up the road to Advance Auto Parts, where I bought one there. Driving home, I admired the comforting sight of an instrument panel unmarred by the ugliness of idiot lights. That can’t help but look good when I drive it to the call center this coming Thursday.

Lately, I’ve been puttering around with OpenOffice Impress, and I’ve discovered motion lines by which I can move text and graphics every which way.

Gosh! The things I can do with it. I guess what I really should be doing is getting into a job situation where knowing how to use presentation software would be important. The only part of OpenOffice from which I’ve been good use is OO Calc, where I’ve been tracking my monthly spending and gasoline usage.

Selling the car has crossed my mind a time or two, but that measure leaves out the possibility that I could get promoted at work, requiring more time spent working in-house.

The only time I ever allow myself to think I’ll get promoted is when it looks like a punishment for mismanaging my assets. Any other time I’m usually wondering how not to get fired. That’s how dissatisfied with me the Boardroom in My Brain is.

OpenChange aims to provide a portable Open Source implementation of Microsoft Exchange Server and Ex

OpenChange aims to provide a portable Open Source implementation of Microsoft Exchange Server and Exchange protocols. Exchange is a groupware server designed to work with Microsoft Outlook, and providing features such as a messaging server, shared calendars, contact databases, public folders, notes and tasks.

We are working on two different aspects:

Provide interoperability with Exchange protocols. This is the MAPI library development purpose (libmapi). MAPI stands for Messaging Application Programming Interface and is used within Microsoft Exchange. The OpenChange implementation provides a client-side library which can be used in existing messaging clients and offer native compatibility first with Exchange server; and in a near future with OpenChange server. As a proof of concept and in order to keep the implementation close to what developers shall expect, we are developing a gnome-evolution plugin which relies on libmapi.

Provide a transparent replacement to Microsoft Exchange Server with native Exchange protocols support and direct communication with Microsoft Outlook. This basically means that OpenChange server won’t need any plugin installation in Outlook. The server is tighly linked to Samba4 since it is developed as an endpoint module for smbd (the samba server daemon). One of the main objective with the server development is the abstraction layer architecture we are working on; it would not be sane for long term development either to rewrite a messaging server or to work with a single existing product. As a matter of fact, openchange should be able to run with any messaging server. For the first technical preview, we will surely orient the development towards a sqlite backend for testing purposes and a postfix one for production one.

Open source projects and vendors are trying a variety of technical approaches to replacing the expensive but ubiquitous Microsoft Exchange. While none is yet a drop-in replacement, some administrators can get a TCO advantage by switching.

Once upon a time at a NASA space flight center a long way away, I was an e-mail administrator. At the time, the 1980s, e-mail was still chaotic. The RFC 822 standard was only beginning to bring rhyme and reason to e-mail. One of RFC 822’s competitors, the Common Messaging Calls (CMC) X.400 standard, wasn’t making much progress, but then Microsoft adopted it in 1992, added the concepts of folders to it, and re-named the result Mail Application Programming Interface (MAPI). And, ever since, the e-mail world can broadly be divided into two camps: the RFC 822 Internet compliant e-mail group and the MAPI-compliant Microsoft Outlook/Exchange pack. Many of us assume that all e-mail works by using such RFC-822isms as e-mail addresses that look like

“name@SomePlaceOrTheOther.com.” Not so. MAPI takes a quite different approach. In addition to simply handling e-mail, extended MAPI and Collaboration Data Objects (CDO), which became Microsoft’s default protocol set in Exchange 2003, added the power to manage calendars and addresses. So it is that Exchange and Outlook, while primarily used for e-mail, is also a groupware package.

And, I might add, a very popular one. A recent survey by Ferris Research revealed that Exchange has about 65% market share across all organizations. Lotus Notes/Domino is a distant number two with 10% of the market. POP/IMAP, (Post Office Protocol/Internet Message Access Protocol), the usual way incoming RFC-822 mail is handled? All the dozens of RFC-822 mail servers, including Sendmail, Qmail, and Postfix combined, have only 15% of the business/organization e-mail market.

As for the open-source groupware servers that try to directly compete with Exchange, such as Scalix, Open-Xchange, and Zimbra, Richi Jennings, a Ferris Research analyst, dismissed them as being mere ‘noise’ in the business e-mail market.

If you look outside the U.S., it’s a somewhat different story. Sarah Radicati, CEO of The Radicati Group, estimates that in EMEA (Europe, Middle-East and Africa) open-source e-mail servers, lead by Germany-based Tobit and Axigen Bucharest, Romania have about 10% of the business e-mail market. Still, Radicati also estimates that Exchange is the dominant e-mail/groupware server with 37% of the world e-mail business market.
