I contacted the Library of America with an author request for John O’Hara and received the following response:

“Thank you for your message. We are happy to report that O’Hara is indeed in development for inclusion in the series, but no publication date has been set.

LOA Customer Service”

No price is listed yet.

John O’Hara was an American writer born in 1905 and who died in 1970 at the age of 65. His first novel, Appointment In Samarra, was published in 1934. His body of work also includes the novels A Rage To Live, BUtterfield 8, Hope Of Heaven, Pal Joey, among others, and additionally short fiction, columns, screenplays and other work. A few of his books became films, including BUtterfield 8 where actor Elizabeth Taylor picked up her first Academy Award for Best Actress (1960).

He was known for his crisp, realistic dialogue, a rather hardboiled writing style and a knack for shrewd social observance. He was fantastic, and Appointment In Samarra happens to be one of my favorite books of all time.

The Library of America can be contacted at info@loa.org.

Apologies for my absence in these recent days; been quite busy with some other commitments; though the guilt of leaving my beloved Spurs in the lurch as we found a drop in form; In some ways I feel partly responsible. For the most part though; if you haven’t got anything nice to say best not to say anything at all right?

Today’s game is in the shadow of the headline that Harry is returning to Fratton Park; as Pompey fans find themselves passing the blame to Mr. HR himself. They say that simply put he should have known that to sustain the club at the financial strain of their top 10 and FA Cup winning side. Seems a bit of a reductionist to blame a single man; as I’m sure that Harry wouldn’t destroy the club he loves simply for the lulz.

Anyway; team news seems to suggest that Woodgate isn’t quite ready for his triumphant return; and Wilson’s forced partying would seem to rule him out from the action today. Imagine a non-drinker who loves his football being forced to stay and enjoy the company of his international team mates enjoying the free libations knowing that for the most part he won’t be having a run out. Hopefully the lads will throw out a few chants today to make him feel at home.

Anyway; Pompey of all the teams in the league (bar Hull) are a team which we should be able to take all the points today; though the absence of Wilson is a little worrying. Krancjar will have to pull out a performance and the return of Crouch in form should also solidify the win for us. Feels a bit cheeky that we’re taking half their best team back to them to wipe the floor with them; but safe to say that they will be out to prove a point today; massive headlines would if we had a rout with goals from Crouch, Defoe and Krancjar. Eyes will be on Jamie and Kevin today also; who certainly we wouldn’t enjoy being embarrassed by our shrewd business moves in the summer.

Portsmouth Chief Exec, Peter Storrie has revealed that the club have an option to keep Jamie O`Hara

Portsmouth Chief Exec, Peter Storrie has revealed that the club have an option to keep Jamie O`Hara for the second half of the season, if they and the player are happy.

Recent comments from Harry indicated that he was reluctant to let him join Pompey, but was forced to as part of the deal which took Kevin Prince Boateng to the south coast, but Harry`s mate tells a slightly different tale, saying: ‘As far as we are concerned, we have an option to keep Jamie until the end of the season. That can be taken up in January if he is enjoying himself – and he is.’

Jamie has so far impressed at his temporary home and has already indicated that he is both happy there and enjoying regular football, something he would not guarantee when he returns to White Hart Lane.

I have to say that I have great sympathy for Jamie, who has so rarely let Spurs down, but has never been anything more than a fill in player since breaking into the side. Allowing him time away was sensible for Harry, but the potential that the player will want more of the same when he returns is obvious and I have to say that I think he would take a move away over more time on the bench at Spurs.

With kids emerging and impressing and the likes of Kranjcar fitting into positions, Jamie would have hoped to fill himself, I honestly think that should Portsmouth have the option to keep him, he would take it and at least review his options in the summer, perhaps at a time when the future of Portsmouth and their league status is also more clear.

Allowing him to stay on loan also offers Spurs the choice that he not only gains experience, but also puts himself in the shop window as an established Premiership player, not merely a squad player with potential. This could give Spurs a greater return on any potential transfer should they or the player decide it better to part company.

Today I purchased the following books from the super awesome sale at University of California Press:

The Holy Forest, Collected Poems of Robin Blaser
The Collected Poems of Frank O’Hara
The Collected Poems of Ted Berrigan
The New American Poetry, 1945-1960
The Collected Poems of Robert Creeley, 1975-2005
It’s go in horizontal by Leslie Scalapino, Selected Poems, 1974-2006

It’s sort of a travesty that I don’t own the O’Hara collected, as much as I love his work (the majority anyway). And I rented the Berrigan collection from Denver Public Library some months ago–I never bought it because it’s normally out of my budget. But with these sale prices, it’s irresistible. Scalapino is brand new to me. I’m most excited for that, and for Creeley. I love the collecting feeling. But I love reading great poetry more.

No soy pintor, soy poeta.
¿Por qué? Creo que preferiría ser
pintor, pero no lo soy. Bueno,
por ejemplo, Mike Goldberg
está empezando un cuadro. Me paso a verlo.
«Siéntate y toma algo», me
dice. Bebo; bebemos. Levanto
la vista. «Has puesto SARDINAS.»
«Sí, ahí le hacía falta algo.»
«Ah.» Me voy, pasan los días,
me paso a verlo otra vez. El cuadro
avanza, me voy, pasan los
días. Me paso a verlo. El cuadro está
terminado. «¿Y las SARDINAS?»
Sólo quedan unas
letras. «Era demasiado», dice Mike.

¿Y yo?
está terminado y aún no he mencionado
el naranja. Son doce poemas, los titulo
NARANJAS.

Miss All Sunday

Dancing on the Stones ^^ !

Jamie’s having troubled thoughts; and they’re not about whether the doctors managed to remove all of the glass out of his missus. As we all well know he’s a massive yiddo; so much in fact that he’s right up the top of the yiddo league table; along with Jermain Defoe and Ledley. Whilst he’s not the most gifted player to grace the lilywhite; I think its safe to say that is commitment to the cause is right up there; and whilst he may never be an Ardiles he could serve a purpose in the future of our team.

With him signing a new contract before being shipped south you can assume that Harry likes to have the kid around and whilst some people write him off; he’s only had a couple of seasons really to develop in a variety of roles which might explain the reason he’s a jack of all trades and master of none.

Count my word for it; Jamie will be one of those late-bloomer style midfielders who finally come onto the scene at around 27; though a move to Portsmouth would sink the lad into the mire of the lower leagues and in all probability into the obscurity of the line between a promotion side and a team struggling for the play-offs. It’s a bit of a shame really; because if he goes blue pill he’ll never really improve into much more than a player used for locking up games against West Brom.

Don’t do it Jamie!

In other news I hear that the international break is finally done and dusted; and we’ve a match against the second biggest team in Manchester on the morrow. Those cads won’t know what’s hit them.

Gasshuku (training camps) are common fixtures in the yearly schedules of many dojo. Last weekend I went to the summer gasshuku my iaido sensei runs each year in Ohara. Ohara lies in the mountains of Okayama prefecture, and is the area where the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi spent his childhood. In Ohara are the Musashi Budokan, a huge martial arts training hall, and the Musashi Dojo, an older and much smaller structure.

The area has suffered a little from the fiction surrounding Musashi’s life (as popularised in Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel and the recent TV adaptation), with a lot of tourist-orientated myth propagation going on, but it remains a wonderful place to practice budo.

The first two days of the iaido gasshuku were spent in the Budokan, but on the Monday, after half the participants returned, we transferred to the Musashi Dojo, where the university students had been sleeping over the weekend (those of us with jobs stayed in the ryokan!). As we had a mix of different ryuha present, the first two days focused mainly on seitei iai, split into groups according to grade (mudan and shodan, nidan, sandan and yondan, godan and up) that were taught by nanadan and hachidan sensei. As we were lucky enough to have two Eishin-ryu hachidan present, we also spent a while practising Eishin-ryu Tachi Uchi no Kurai, the first of the paired kumi iai kata sets. Some of the Hoki-ryu students found these interesting. It was, as one would expect, the people with kendo or kenjutsu experience who took to them most easily.

On the final day we spent some more time on the kumitachi, and I was paired with a Shinkage-ryu practitioner (by which I mean he studies Yagyu Shinkage ryu as well as Shinkage ryu iai, which does not have the same origin). He also studies Shinto Muso ryu, and these koryu schools have given him an excellent understanding of kumitachi. He approached the keiko in exactly the way I like my kumitachi partners to: following the technique, but taking advantage of mistakes I make. I got pseudo-kicked in the groin a few times and cut in the neck and flank a few more. The upshot of this – along with excellent input from both sensei – was that I now have a much better understanding of some of the kata. Techniques that felt impractical suddenly make a lot of sense. I just regret that I have no one to practise them with here, as the feedback from the opponent is very valuable, especially in the kata involving tsubazeriai or grappling. The remainder of the last day was spent doing koryu iai, and I picked up a few great pointers that will hopefully improve my waza.

My iai on the first two days wasn’t too hot. I had a terrible headache for most of the second day and dropped out of the shiai in the first round, unable to put any spirit into my form. The last day saw a big improvement and my sensei even praised my kigurai at one point. My sensei also mentioned that my tenouchi was vastly improved. I am certain that this is down to kendo. The feedback you get in kendo has made it easier for me to tell in which areas my tenouchi needs work.

The weekend was over all too soon. I was great to meet with old friends and sensei I hadn’t seen for many months. I made some new friends too, and I’m looking forward to training with them again. The Spring gasshuku can’t come soon enough.

In a recent blog on the need for discipline in the writing life, fellow blogger Marielena Zuniga points out the necessity of “controlling behavior to produce the desired result.” A full-time job as a writer can certainly provide that discipline. You have to somehow manage to grind out the words – and do it well – or risk losing your job. That’s one reason why newspaper writing has traditionally been a wonderful launching pad for novel writing (think Ernest Hemingway, John O’Hara, Mark Twain).

My husband (now a successful corporate writer) started his career as a newspaper reporter under a tyrannical editor in the 1970s. That editor would fire a cub reporter as soon as look at him. Of course it is the nature of that business to disallow resting on one’s laurels. I worked at the same newspaper and remember once when Tom did a bang-up job on a sensational area murder trial. While everyone admired his brilliant coverage, the very day his concluding piece hit the presses the sub-editor had a single sentence for him: “What do you have for me tomorrow?” It was a trial-by-fire way to start a career but boy did it teach discipline!

As want-to-be novelists, some version of that line is one we could well ask ourselves on a daily basis: what have I written today to further my effort to finish my novel? It’s establishing the discipline and habit of writing on a daily basis that will win this race. It doesn’t need to be a sprint; it could just as well be a long-distance marathon. An added benefit of this kind of discipline: we get much better at our craft very quickly. That’s something friend and mentor Jonathan Maberry often points out.

One thing is for sure: waiting for the muse to strike will not cut it. Writers who struggle with the ubiquitous “blank page” syndrome learn to just get something down on the page – anything. Whether you’re composing on the computer screen or in longhand, once there is printing on the page you have officially begun. You have something to work with.

It may sound odd, but I sometimes tell students who have a great deal of difficulty getting started on a writing project to begin with their name, the class title, the date. Not much creativity there, yet something is on that page. You have officially begun and can take it from there. More experienced writers can try the same trick. Tell yourself you will write for one hour a day – it doesn’t have to be good and you don’t have to even think about the long process that is “writing the novel.” A single scene will do. Then, if experience is any teacher, you will surprise yourself with how much you do write and how good it eventually becomes – but only if you keep to your discipline and stay the course.

O’Hara has been at White Hart Lane since 2005, when he joined as a trainee, and has spent short loan spells at Chesterfield and Millwall. The 22-year-old has played three times for Spurs so far this season, twice as a late substitute before starting and scoring in their 5-1 Carling Cup win over Doncaster in midweek. “It was frustrating to be sat on the bench at Tottenham,” O’Hara told Portsmouth’s official website, www.portsmouthfc.co.uk, after joining Pompey on loan until January, with an option to extend it until the end of the season. “I hope I can come here and get some games under my belt. “It’s a chance to play for a side who have done really well over the last few years, so I jumped at the opportunity. “I’m always going to give 100% and hope I’ll fit in straightaway and get to know the lads quite quickly.”

Miro
ofertas de relojes de pulsera. Hay
gatos que juegan en el serrín.
A
Antes
pensaba que aquí se hacía el
Armory Show.
Un vaso de zumo de papaya
y vuelta al trabajo. Mi corazón está en mi
bolsillo, son los Poemas de Pierre Reverdy.
