“Oi Oi Oi” by Boys Noize

Boys Noize is one of my favorite producers so I jumped at the chance to review his new album, Power, for Joonbug. While retaining much of the electro bombast that made Oi Oi Oi one of my favorite albums of 2007, I found his follow up to be sparser, more tightly focused and packed with subtle nods to Detroit and acid techno, power industrial and even Boards of Canada style melodies.

Milisi Kecoa (milisikecoa@yahoo.com) adalah band proyek terbaru dari Dani a.k.a Tremor, editor di balik fanzine HC/punk kenamaan asal Bandung, Beyond The Barbed Wire, Acil (Krass Kepala), dkk. Tremor memutuskan untuk kembali bermusik setelah (untuk sementara) Beyond The Barbed Wire vakum dulu pengerjaannya (meskipun baru terbit tiga isyu saja, tapi fanzine ini mendapat respon yang luar biasa dari scene D.I.Y hc/punk Nusantara, maupun dari negeri-negeri tetangga).

Bagi kalian yang belum tahu, Tremor dulunya adalah former-vocalist dari Rajasinga (yes, that famous stoner-grind trio from Bandung – ed). Setelah keluar dari band tersebut, Tremor mulai fokus untuk mengerjakan fanzine Beyond The Barbed Wire. Di Milisi Kecoa, Tremor kembali mengisi posisi sebagai vokalis. Early 80’s hardcore-punk / punk-rock adalah style yang dimainkan oleh Milisi Kecoa. “Back to root” begitu pengakuan dari Tremor mengenai band barunya ini.

Oi! is a working class street-level subgenre of punk rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. Some famous Oi! bands are Street Dogs and the early work of Anti-Flag.

This week we’re highlighting a few artists in Oi! history, both well- and unknown. We start with the Spanish band Decibelios and you can see the video of their song  Oi! Oi! Oi! right on top of this page. Enjoy!

I’ve been lucky enough to find tons of incredible new music lately. Keeping that in mind, I figured I’d post some of it and spread the love. In comes Röyksopp/Boys Noize. Röyksopp is an awesome band based out of Norway that I’m sure plenty of you have heard of (from this). They’ve released two albums already, and their newest one, Junior, is coming out really soon (a month and a half or so until it drops). The first single off the album, “Happy Up Here” doesn’t come out for a month, but don’t worry, Boys Noize has already remixed it.

Boys Noize is definitely one of my favorite artists nowadays, and I still can’t get over the fact that Oi Oi Oi was a friggin debut album (add the fact that his record label is off the charts bananas…we’ve got a winner). Anyways, he remixed the shit out of this track and the drop is out of this world. It’s a bit darker than some of his stuff but it is incredible. No exaggeration, this is my favorite track that has come out in the last month or so. Tell me what you think, I’m curious to see if people like what he did with the track.

Lava Lava by Boys Noize in Oi Oi Oi

In my opinion, this is semi-hardcore electro-house, and might take a bit of getting used to. However, after you’ve borne through it once, you’ll be hooked to this level of electro-intensity and raw scratchiness, and the normal stuff will begin to sound weak in comparison.

Possible spoiler alert. Have just returned from watching Slumdog Millionaire, which was my first film for the year.

All I will say is this: if you don’t see this movie we can’t be friends anymore. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you realise that life isn’t really worth living unless there is the possibility of an epic Bollywood dance at a train station. The funniest bit though was right at the end of the movie when Jamal was accepting his giant novelty cheque the Divine Miss Em elbowed me and said “You know how that feels!”  (Which is true to a point. Except Deal or No Deal isn’t quite Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Jamal wasn’t at all hungover on the show, and I bet he didn’t get the cheque jammed in a tram door on his way home. But that’s another story)

I loved it. And I’m glad, because I really liked the book and almost every movie that gets hyped up this much  doesn’t deserve it. Danny Boyle is a genius. Please please PLEASE watch it.

I started watching Good Morning America when I got home, but I’ve had to turn it off because a) it’s late and I need some beauty sleep b) it’s way beyond my current level of comprehension, and c) the chances of an epic Bollywood dance erupting at the end are minimal. Inauguration day doesn’t really translate to Australia, although for some weird reason I am getting flashbacks to the 2004 Australian election when Little Johnny got back in and Rachel, Meg and I were so depressed we went to a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show to cheer ourselves up.

Speaking of the democratic process, the 4th Annual Hottest 100/Australia Day Party of Joy is bearing down upon us.  Each year Australians cast their votes to decide what song was the best of 2008. Who could forget last year’s 13 vote cliffhanger between Knights of Cydonia by Muse and Straight Lines  by Silverchair?  THAT’S DEMOCRACY PEOPLE. Have very fond memories of doing a victory lap of the house when we realised Muse had won.

Apparently this year my housemate Krystle has decided we’re going to have a rockstar party. This is proving to be a bit of a problem, as I have already decided that I want to dress up as The Presets circa the Arias last September but fear this may not be feasible. Observe:

That is going to be a teensy bit trickier than Easy Reader I think. However, that is a problem for tomorrow. Happy inauguration day to all my American friends!

Beh, proprio in questo stato alterato di coscienza, in cui è meglio che io pensi il meno possibile, perchè, come direbbe l’Orchetto, se no mi scoppia il cervello, mi accorgo di quello che ho intorno.
Amore, in senso assoluto.
E in cui mi rotolo come un filetto di salmone nei semi di sesamo.
Anche l’amore del gruppo-autistici, anche il mio Biondofratello, che ogni tanto mi manda un messaggio, ma poi chiama il Puntoggì per sapere come sto.
L’amore di mia madre, che non mi dice niente, ma mi fa sempre trovare qualcosa di aggiustato in casa, un fornello pulito, un bicchiere lavato, una fetida cassetta del gatto con la sabbia cambiata. L’amore di mio padre che boffonchia al telefono.
E l’amore degli amici. Anche quelli che non ho mai visto. Anche quelli che vedrò, adesso che ho tutti i week-end liberi, tutti i week-end da riempire.
Ma non volevo dire questo. Volevo dire della mia scelta di parlare, mentre il mio lato borghese dei panni sporchi che si lavano in casa si contorce come Linda Blair e vomita verde.
Parlo.
E vedo che le persone ci mettono dentro un po’ quello che vogliono nel mio dolore. Le loro offese, le loro tristezze, quella volta che gli è capitato.
Io sto cominciando a conoscerle dinuovo le persone che ho intorno. A capirle, a leggerle, con chiavi differenti.
Soffro ma colleziono storie bellissime e incredibili.
Sto male che se fossi un veterinario mi abbatterei. Non perchè sia una tragedia. Perchè riesco ancora a capire la differenza tra piccoli dolori e grandi dolori. Essendo stata io campionessa olimpionica di facciamoci del male.
Sto male per quello che vuol dire per me. Per come si inserisce nella mia vita.
Per il senso di inutilità e ingiustizia.
E poi qualcuno mi dice che si distrae un po’ con le mie vicende assurde e anche un po’ ridicole. E allora io penso che ha un senso.
Anche solo come specchio e come diversivo, per adesso.
E poi vedremo.
Nel tempo, dice Linda Blair, tra un grugnito e un rigurgito verde.
E questo postulo è anche un po’ per risposta a quello della Nessi, così adesso tutti pensate che sono quella che scrive.

Boys Noize, o Alex Ridha, llegan desde Berlín con su Bugged Out a la Sala Razzmatazz de Barcelona. En la línea de otros ya comentados (MSTRKRFT, Mehdi & Feadz y algún otro que ahora no recuerdo). Techno, rock y electrónica mezclados con mucho “Noize” son los ingredientes que encontraremos este Viernes 23 de Mayo en el The Loft. Una propuesta muy, pero que muy tentadora.

Después del salto, lo que se puede hacer en la piscina del Coachella (a mi me cogió un ataque de envidia).

Es contemporáneo de los chicos de Ed Banger, Kitsuné y Institubes, de los que ha remezclado unos cuantos temas, ha dado un paso más en el bastardismo musical que proponen y nombre fijo en los festivales de todo el mundo.

Boys Noize fundó su própio sello discográfico, Boys Noize Records en 2005 y ya acumula más de 10 referéncias, entre ellas su primer LP, Oi Oi Oi, imprescindible en cualquier biblioteca de música electrónica.

PD: Hoy da la casualidad que es mi cumpleaños, así que si el Viernes veis a alguien haciendo el loco, seguramente sea yo.

Comedy is an awesome use of time. Makes you happy and cures your heart.

I just got back from a stand up comedy by Arj Barker here in uni. It was AWESOME. Everything you would’ve seen on TV actually happens before your eyes. Fuck censorship. The days where you go “*gasp!* he said the F-word in front of all these people??” are gone.

He actually put it quite clearly in one of his acts (forgive my plagiarism of humour)

You guys are cool. you can take all this shit words perfectly. In fact, Australians curse so much that it’s like the entire country is founded by sailors.
The other day I was asking for directions, I said “Mate, you know the way to the post office?”
“Shit yeah. You turn fuckin left on that fuckin corner there then fuckin turn right on the bloody fuckin roundabout then just go fuckin straight like a bitch. On your left you’ll see that cunt”

Which actually is very much true. My language, I must admit has grown rather flowery since I’ve been here. To the point that I’m compelled to cuss with heavy aboriginal accent.
I do, however still try to avoid using the big guns of cursing. Fuck, I must clarify is NOT a big gun. It’s not even a bullet. Fuck is basically an upgrade from when you were a kid using stuff like stupid and dumb-dumb. It’s not a gun. It’s just from a pacifier to a fork.

In fact, Fuck is so widely used that the brutality of it has been blunted. Granted it’s still taboo, it’s definitely nothing as hair raising as the P-word.
