OK Go has/had one of the most popular internet music videos of all-time under their belts and they continue to impress with their latest release. They have mastered the art of low budget videos that gain maximum exposure. I’m sure these videos combined cost less than $2,000.

Ok Go est un groupe américain qui s’est formé en 1998. Leur clip “A million ways” a enflammé la toile et les a rendu célèbres dans le monde entier. Pas mal pour un clip à 5$.

« A l’origine, raconte Damian, guitariste et chanteur fluet du groupe, on a conçu ce numéro comme une cascade pour nos concerts. On voulait être capables de poser nos instruments au beau milieu du spectacle et de se mettre à danser. »

Sous la houlette de la soeur du chanteur, danseuse de salon professionnelle, le quartet répète ses pas dans le jardin, concocte une danse idiote et gentiment moqueuse des chorégraphies stéréotypées, façon Nsync. La vidéo d’entraînement d’ A Million Ways atterrit sur le Net en août 2005.

Les fans ne se contentent pas de visionner le clip, la « OK Go dance » fait des émules, macarena virale reprise aux quatre coins du globe par des écolières japonaises, des danseurs de claquettes, des mariées, des ados de tout poil qui se filment en train d’exécuter la danse dans des jardins, des fontaines, des champs de maïs, sur les toits…

Surfant sur le buzz, les OK Go imaginent en juillet une nouvelle vidéo dans la même veine: leurs cabrioles sur tapis roulant se répandent sur le Net comme la poudre et dynamitent les ventes de leur album Oh No, produit par Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, The Cardigans).

Never really liked what I’ve heard from this band before, but they just put out this great song with a fantastic video to match.  Kudos to the director and band as they take a simple camera effect and exploit it ingeniously.

The Zombies – This Will Be Our Year

I never mentioned this at the time, but I always thought that maybe… 2% of the Arctic Monkeys’ success was down to the fact they had the word “monkey” in their name. They were shooting for a 6th forum/uni student market, so what better way to appeal to them than to throw a “lol random” buzzword in there? If I wanted to make megabucks right now from a band, they would have the word “ninja”, “pirate” or “cheese” in their name. I don’t know if The Zombies have made any extra money out of the 36-month craze for all things zombiefied amongst cretins (maybe horrorpunk bands are finally cashing in on that? Someone check Wednesday13’s shareholdings), but then I suppose they make enough from playing ATPs and shit like that? Is that undignified for a band of their age? Just makes me think of when you go and see a gig and there’s some 55-year-old going ham at the front and all you can consider is “Why aren’t you at home with a wife and child who love you dearly?”. Good song, mind.

The Beautiful South – This Will Be Our Year

Yeah, Mondeo Pop rides again on ILB for the briefest of moments. When The South split, Heaton described it as being due to “musical similarities”, later going on to clarify that this meant they’d spent the final decade of their career effectively releasing the same album over and over again. This isn’t a point without merit, but their covers album, “Golddiggas, Headnoddas and Pholk Songs” (classic title imo) is easily the finest of their later works, a mixture of “hah, look who we’re covering” covers (Blue Oyster Cult, S Club 7) and covers that make perfect sense (Electric Light Orchestra, The Zombies themselves). I dunno why this song hits me so hard… going back to the Mondeo Pop ideology, it’s all about grabbing on to whatever you can in the monotony. This is a track that captures that perfectly.

OK Go – This Will Be Our Year

Yeah, this is awful. Do you think OK Go are happy with their lives? They are permanently going to be known as “the gym machine dancing dudes”, will never have another hit, but probably made enough money and jailbait pussy off that one joint to mean they never need work again. Most deals with the devil are signed in blood on parchment, this one was signed in sweat on a Fitness First towel. Anyway, before OK Go had thrown their souls away, they still needed to make bank by doing whatever came their way. This is from the soundtrack to seminal teen flick “John Tucker Must Die”, in which a bunch of girls (one’s a goth, one’s a cheerleader, the other is something else) get played by John Tucker, who is played by Chad Michael Murray or someone idk, and so they set about bringing him down with the help of a geeky girl. The movie was mainly funded by Diet Coke and resultantly features a can of the black doctor in nearly every single scene. This movie was clearly filmed before Sainsbury’s started doing Relentless for £1 a can, solving everyone’s caffeine needs a little easier.

So last night was Episode 8 of Final Cut for semester one. Like always we began at 8pm sharp following on after The TigerFace Show and things started off quite well… for like the first 30 seconds anyway. That’s when I forgot half of what I was supposed to say for the introduction and Diane kept talking over the music because she assumed the mics were turned down; funny at the time, kind of embarrassing in hindsight. Since the big film of the week was New Moon, we decided to focus our New Releases reviews on that. The only other film of significance to come recently (that we haven’t reviewed already) was Jim Carey’s A Christmas Carol, but we’ve decided to save that until at least December, out of principal if nothing else.

So yeah, that was the show. Some of you might be asking why we didn’t play the more prominent songs from New Moon, like Death Cab or The Editors. Well the reason for that is simply because we reported on the release of the OST a few weeks ago and had already ran some of those tracks. It was a personal thing really, I just didn’t want to recycle songs, and I felt like it wouldn’t be fair to the people who listen to us every week. Besides, ‘Meet Me on the Equinox‘ isn’t even in the film, (Wtf?) whereas Possibility is played during one of its few good scenes. Lykke Li is someone you should check out.

Anyway, this week was a bit different because we actually had Ciarán and James in the studio with us doing Cult Classics live, as opposed to pre-recorded. They sounded really good live, most likely because for the past fortnight they’ve been getting some good practice in. (Listen to ‘Homophonic’ Mondays at 9pm!) I also had Ciarán on photo duty since I wanted some pictures of us at work for both here and our Facebook Page. In summation, I was quite pleased with how everything turned out. The Rant sounded great, which was a huge relief since I was pretty worried that playing the snippets (unedited) might be a bit glitchy, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Next week we’ll probably be looking at The Road; Viggo Mortensen’s new movie set in a post-apocalyptic world about man and his son trying desperately to survive. Hopefully we’ll also get to review Paranormal Activity; providing it gets a semi-widespread release. The commercials I’ve seen for it look really clever. They’re advertising it as one of the scariest movies this decade but instead of playing us clips of the movie itself, they show us the audience’s reactions. Colour me intrigued.

That’s about it for this week at college. Even though I finished my Media Studies assignment today, (design a book cover and write a document to accompany it explaining the conceptualisation, process, semiotics, etc. We did The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon) another one has snuck up on me. Damn you Research Methods! I also have Video Production, Crime and the Media and a media studies exam at the end of the semester. Suffice to say, I’m a tad stressed. Luckily I’m only working Saturday evening and 10 hours on Sunday, (which despite how it may seem, is actually a lot less than what I usually do) so tomorrow will be spent doing research in the morning, and a lot of sitting down with Ciarán and James in the evening. This pleases me.

I’m not going to engage in the topic of whether New Moon is a good movie or not (but if you are interested in my thoughts on it, feel free to read my review at michaelbayistheantichrist.wordpress.com).  I would though like to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that the soundtrack for New Moon is pretty damn good.  Sadly, I think I must add that this is most likely awesome for the Twilight franchise, but not so awesome for these artists’ reputations.  Whatever gets people listening to good music, right?  … Maybe.

Le dernier post de notre chat national m’a rappelé que j’attendais impatiemment la Soundtrack du nouveau Twilight : New Moon. Oui je l’avoue j’attends ce film depuis longtemps parce que je raffole des vampires et des loups-garou et que Dude Whatever (le vampire) est trop hot et que Someone Something (le loup-garou) est trop cut.

NOOOOOOTTT !!!!! Par contre, j’attendais vraiment la soundtrack pour voir ce que mes fidèles amis nous réservaient. Twilight les a-t-il transformés en de monstres commerciaux mainstream ou ont-ils réussi à nous présenter des chef-d’oeuvres comme ils l’ont souvent fait auparavant…

Je parle évidemment de Bon Iver, Lykke Li, OK Go, Grizzly Bear, Sea Wolf et plusieurs autres artistes qui ne méritent pas de se faire connaître par la population pour ne pas être “corrupted by the DARK side of the music industry”.

So tonight I had the opportunity to shoot OK GO at USC’s Conquest. It’s a pretty unique event, a huge rally of various events the weekend before the UCLA vs. USC game. In addition to have OK GO perform, there was a ferris wheel, the burning of a wooden bruin (the flame was well over 20 feet high at one point), performance from the marching band, and a stand up act from Jamie Kennedy.  Though the vast majority of the shots I got from tonight were in the press pit and were more typical photos, I decided to choose this one because it’s not everyday the vocalist goes out into the crowd to perform a song.

Last month OK Go leaked ” I Want You So Bad I Can’t Breathe” along with a promise of a new album. Now they have revealed the title and release date of this promised album: Of the Blue Colour of the Sky will be out Jan 12th, 2010. This week they released the first official single along with an accompanying new video. As we said last month, we love this band’s creative and artistic touch in their video productions!

I am reluctant to publish this post… but I feel obligated to share these images.  Shannon got me a ticket to see New Moon at the premier tonight.  I will be the first to admit I am not a zealous twighlight fan…  However, I am so thankful I got to go for two reasons 1. taylor lautner and 2. the soundtrack…

New Moon itself was decant and an upgrade from Twighlight.  It had better special effects and in general you could tell it had a larger budget.  Taylor Lautner’s body alone is worth seeing the movie for…. but seriously WOW! Apparently he put on 30 lbs of muscle for the movie.  The soundtrack was great, see below for album sampler.

Re-emerging myself in gym life was a shock to the system, just stepping out the lift almost floored me, literally- they’ve built a wall, a giant white wall right in your face as you step out the lift. And my reaction, as the doors opened to reveal the imposing wall and a man patiently waiting to exit, was to exclaim loudly and stumble backwards further into the lift almost tripping over myself- so much for being smooth and acting like I’d never left.
After three months of feeling the inevitable guilt of not having been I finally summoned up the willpower to drag my ass to the gym and after tackling the new wall, I was then met with the re-shuffle. Now never having had an induction I tend to stick to the equipment I know and trust myself not to get entangled in/crushed to death under and therefore know where everything I use is and have a vague sort of plan of attack. However it seemed some wiseacre had decided to have a spruce up in my absence and rearranged all the equipment in to nicely ordered rows.
So once again my plan to try and be cool like a regular gym goer failed hopelessly, as I was left to wander around looking like a lost puppy trying to find the arm bicep machine-thing. Add in my short-sightedness, combined with machinery scattered all over the huge floor space and it was a fairly long-winded task. After what seemed like 20 minutes of looking like a fool I stumbled across the one I was after, only to find a red-faced, incredibly serious looking, muscley man grappling with machine.
Crap what to do? More aimless wandering before lapping back and swiping the machine before the preened housewife without a hair or nail out-of-place attempted to steal it. However due to my eagerness to work those biceps I forgot to check the weight the muscley man had left me with and proceeded to almost give myself a hernia on my first attempt. 50kg- that’s probably how much the housewife weighed and definitely more than I can handle.
Moving on I hit the cross-trainer and had a good oggle round the room, to relieve the boredom, checking out my companions; in the corner there was the stereotypical meat heads groaning under the pressure of the ridiculously heavy weights they can barely lift off the ground. Some had the special gloves while others had the gloves AND the belt that I assume magically make you better at weights.
As I was musing over whether maybe I should get myself some freaky fingerless gloves I was suddenly distracted by the man who clambered on to the cross-trainer next to me and proceeded to punish himself by hurling his entire body around and breathing so loud I could hear him over my Ipod. Oh dear god I needed to laugh and lost all coordination concentrating on not doing.
So I had to leave it was just too hilarious and I think he caught me looking at him, oops time for the treadmill and oh what a surprise the only free one was next to a man in crazy tight lycra- god help me. I tried to distract myself by imagining how much fun recreating the Ok Go ‘Here it goes again’ video would be.
Next there was barefoot man- why the hell would you be barefoot in the gym- what possibly could you be doing that would require you to be barefoot? And then there was pretending to be dead woman who appeared to be having a sleep on the mats.
The final incident occurred as I was exiting through the turnstile and managed to get my bag strap wrapped round one of the prongs and was yanked backwards as I walked off, much to the humour of the guy behind me- good times.
After an hours worth of fairly hilarious incidents and distressing sights I was left wondering why I stayed away for so long- who needs tv when you can go and watch the freaks in the gym.
