            You can probably tell that I am just doing the show ay any point during the week.  My goal is to still keep doing it once a week.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and listen.  It means a lot.  I can’t say that enough.

            This week’s show is action packed.  For some reason, even when I think I don’t have any more songs to share, I manage to find something I love to share.

 Waylon Jennings made last week awesome for me, and I shared a song he recorded with you.  He formed a group with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson called The Highwaymen.  Hopefully I can get around to listening to a CD that was handed off to me so I can get some Highwaymen on for you soon.  For now you get a song about cowboys since we all have a little bit of cowboy in us, right?

There is a cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” by Yael Naim.  Naim is an Israeli-born Parisian whose self-titled debut is definitely worth checking out.  She has a great voice and even sings in Hebrew and French on the record.

            There is a little “Did-you-know?” segment after “Epistrophy” by The Thelonius Monk Quartet with John Coltrane.  You will be schooled – or not. There is some Bo Diddley, 2pac, Outkast, and an awesome OK Go song mixed in there too.

            Other than that, the rest are songs that I think are either really pretty, catchy, fun, meaningful, danceable, or any combination thereof, so please enjoy and don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to hear anything or tell me whatever.  Pass it on to your friends who may like this, and have a good week.

OK Go’s Tim Nordwind doesn’t like having fun, apparently.

Recently, MTV2, VH1 and MTVBase have teemed up to create a poll for viewers to vote on the greatest music video ever.  They each put their lists up in the past month (see top 10 from two) and put a general list for people to vote from on their website.  So people voted and the results are in, and having just watched in disbelief, I thought I’d share the findings with you.  Now keep in mind that people were meant to vote based on artistic direction, directorial vision, how well made the video is, how controvertial, how important the song was and how well the video and song go together.  In reverse top ten order, here are the results:

And are you ready for this?  I mean REALLY READY????  The number one, best music video of all time according to the voters, that is, better than anything Gondry or Jonze directed, better than Go With The Flow, better than Thriller, better than Sledgehammer, better than ANY OTHER VIDEO.

1. DURAN DURAN – “Rio”

Throughout the countdown, the hosts kept saying how awful the first choice was, but I couldn’t even begin to guess that.  I thought maybe it was going to be Rick Astley

which would have been AMAZING, but alas, no dice.  I think what happened is that you get a lot of great videos on MTV2 which splits the fans and those videos all end up at the bottom end of the top ten, or not at all.  Then you get artists like Madonna and Michael Jackson, and everyone assumes everyone else will vote for those, so they don’t have to.  The you get all the VH1 viewers clicking like crazy on Duran Duran.

I’ll give you “Rio” was a moment in time, and that video appealed to a lot of people, but its not particularly well made, its not very artistic, it hasn’t got a great vision.  It goes pretty well with the song, but not to the smae extent as something like “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

And what about certain directors who have made music video a real genre?  Chris Cunningham is the only one on here.  No Michel Gondry, no Spike Jonze, no Mark Romanek, no Anton Corbijn, no Jonathan Glazer.  I know I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to these things, but give credit where credits due, if you’re voting on the best MUSIC VIDEO, then you are supposed to be taking into consideration what you think is the best marriage of moving pictures and music to ever come accross your tv, not your favorite 1980’s boy band.

But all the blame does not lie with misguided viewers.  Voters were “encouraged” by their favorite stations’ own top 10 countdowns to vote, and the videos were listed on the site, so certain videos ended up being biased.  The vote also shows the power of the mid-30’s to mid-40’s crowd, never underestimate the 1980’s and how badly they have affected music, fashion and video.

Here’s a question for the ages: If your music video is so compelling, so visually arresting, so completely mesmerizing and flat-out awesome to watch that the viewer may actually kind of forget to even listen to the song, is that a good or a bad thing?

Well, when you’re treadmill-hopping rockers OK Go and the song is Here It Goes Again, it’s not only good, it’s great. The band had already had some impressive viral success with the video for A Million Ways, in which they performed an intricate backyard dance choreographed by lead singer Damien Kulash’s sister Trish Sie. But when they hit those treadmills for a single-take, Sie-choreographed aerobic explosion of goodness, they became bona fide stars. The video, which took 12 days of rehearsal and features bassist Tim Nordwind lipsynching to Kulash’s vocals, won the 2007 Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video, and has gotten more than 33 million views on YouTube since its debut. Recreating the performance live at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards cemented OK Go’s stardom, and today, the jaunty little ditty Kulash says is about “a terrible hangover after a one-night stand” has been used in commercials for everything from Nike+ iPod to Disney.com.

Since then, everyone’s jumped on the bandwagon (or, you know, the treadmill). Fellow viral darlings Derrick and Will risked injury to create Nobody’s Watching OK Go. The bands’ feats have been reenacted by Legos, Spider Pig and the Pulp Sport Mascots. They’ve been joined by Ozzy Osbourne, mashed up with Kenny Rogers, aped in countless high school talent shows, and caused everything vaguely treadmill-related, from French bloggers on escalators to this guy, to get tagged with “OK Go” whether it has anything to do with the band or not. There’s even an entire Here It Goes Again homage with animals on treadmills. And one of the stars of that video, the Treadmill Shrimp, actually has at least five Here It Goes Again mashups all his own.

And everybody knows, when you hook the shrimp contingent, well…that’s when you know you’ve really made it.

(so I’d been going on a bit about how I think OKGo’s a smart/funny band, well read it and weep – what vocabulary, honest! So much substance behind the style. I also love them b/c I sortof knew them when they were uncool, which makes me *feel* cool. Anyway, read the essay, you will learn some stuff. )

Ladies, there are a million well-known reasons why you shouldn’t date a musician. We’re self-obsessed, we’re flaky, we’re hot-tempered, we’re unreliable, and we’re always broke, so you’ll have to pay for everything. We’re imperious, impenetrable, and impractical, and, let’s face it ? we ain’t usually the cleanest of folk. Nonetheless, you keep falling for us. The only reason I can surmise is this: our faults are of exactly the type that get mistaken for virtues in the confusing tumult of love. Our brand of crazy is precisely the kind that can appear sexy under the weird lights of romance.

Let’s say you meet a cute guy, for instance. He’s a little cocky, but you say you like some confidence in a man. He’s a bit scatterbrained, but you think of it as creative. He’s manic, but you call it passion. Perhaps he could shampoo a little more often; you say you like’em on the wild side. These charitable evaluations are the currency of love ? they’re how you’re supposed to feel when you’re falling for someone ? but ladies, I’m warning you: you’ve got to stay away from the musicians.

The real reason we’re unlovable has nothing to do with our big mouths or big egos. In fact, it’s not a matter of emotional compatibility at all; it’s a simple matter of practicality. We want precisely what you do not. You want a companion; we want to take our guitars and disappear into the gaping maw of the country. You want someone to eat meals with, someone to tell jokes to, someone to kiss. We want to be in a van somewhere between Minneapolis and Seattle, hopped up on Red Bull at four in the morning and speeding like hell to make it to the club by tomorrow afternoon. We run on endless newness, endless mania, and endless travel.

But wait, you say. The particular musician you are currently butterfly-stomached about doesn’t go on tour; he’s in high school, and his band has never played anything but house parties. He likes languid Sunday afternoons together even more than you do, and he’s the one who’s always perched and waiting at your locker. Rock n’ roll is just something he does for fun. Ladies, don’t be fooled! A shark in a cage is still a shark! The young Jeckyl of your fancy may not know the Hyde inside him, but it’s there nonetheless.

The longer you spend with a musician, the more you will come to know the anxious discontentment at his core. If you are lucky, he will have great success, be swept off into the tempest of the music industry, and he will never bother you again. In most cases, though, you will find your heart tied to someone who is terminally unsatisfied ? someone who cannot ever get what he wants from the world. He will toil endlessly and fruitlessly at song after song, idea after idea, show after show. The only thing that could possibly fulfill him is the same success that would ruin your relationship. And even then, he would want more. Like I said, he wants exactly what you do not.

On top of it all, you’re going to have lie to him, and maybe even to yourself. You’ll have to tell him his band is good. You and I both know it’s not true. Do you really want a boyfriend you have to lie to?

Listen, I know that creative people are sexy, and I know it’s easy to fall for people with talent. But ladies, there are plenty of talented writers and engineers and architects out there. I’m telling you, for your own good: stay away from the musicians.

I’m sure you get the point and you possibly don’t need to hear a Ok Go reference to see I started yet another blog.  But this time it’s different I swear. Starting a blog (and keeping it updated) was one of my new years resolutions to not only voice my opinions and practice my writing but to be able to look back on it and says “I felt this way then.” or “I ate that on that day.” If you know me well enough to know my intersts or have yet to discover, this blog will most likely consist of the following topics:

If you never heard the song “Here It Goes Again” By Ok GO

Here it goes…

This weekend was rich with whipped cream of events and I even got a cherry on top.

The City of Blinding lights by U2 is playing, my heart is full of joy and my brain is getting filled with the serotonin from all-around excitement, while I get goose bumps all over my arms and legs (why am I always so emotional? I don’t even get to vote!) – here he comes….Obama, not very tall, skinny, black man with a very intelligent speech. Obama had many socialistic ideas to spare, which I liked (although, I probably shouldn’t be liking them, but it’s in my nature, right?), he was genuine, open, well-spoken, well-rehearsed. He was signed, sealed, delivered, he was ours! Guess what song played when Obama was concluding his speech? Stevie Wonder – good guess!

The bottom line was I was sold, with all my superficial libertarianism-I was bought for nothing, for a song. It was a “Change I could believe in.”

Obama ended up winning Wyoming, but will he win the war?

OkGo show in A&S Auditorium was next on our agenda.

I am not a huge fan of the band (quite honestly, HelloGoodbye clicked in my head and that’s why I decided to go), but the tickets were only $10 and the show ended up being pretty good. I was hanging out with Bailey, Barbara, Dayna and Tom, who went to the bathroom and disappeared after the first few minutes of the show.

The opening band was good too, OkGo brought Californians Get Back Loretta that was really unique and charismatic (in an indie Californian band sort of way, of course). They played for about 45 minutes and gave out free posters and Cd’s at the end of the show. I even thought I should listen to them in a more attentive manner, which I don’t normally do.

OkGo were pretty good, though I was not a fan of agenda pushing. who do they think they are, U2 or Brangelina? I don’t like their music that mush either, but the accompanying videos were good. Acoustic versions and interactions with the audience truly impressed me.

All in all, the show was worth 10 bucks I paid for it. The weekend was great, especially since I get to work a 40-hour week over Spring Break. But guess what? I’m not so lame about it, just because I’m not a freshman anymore…at least I’m making money!

OK Go Dress Me

Getting off the jeans-and-T-shirt treadmill

We’re in the basement of Hollywood’s Magic Castle, and members of the band OK Go are in various states of decency. Their stylist pal Christopher Kreiling mans the large metal clothing rack, moving a symphony of button-up shirts, jackets and slacks. Cocktail tables are strewn with ties, cuff blings, handkerchiefs and hats. Each member — lead singer Damian Kulash, bassist Tim Nordwind, drummer Dan Konopka and keyboardist Andy Ross — dresses in whatever Kreiling hands him, then waits for his final stamp of approval.

“You need a different tie,” he instructs one.

“Try this shirt instead,” he tells another.

After about an hour and a half, and the addition of some hair-care product, OK Go are finally photo-ready, dressed in clashing stripes, polka dots and paisley. They’re a boy band like the Temptations were a boy band, but with the energy of the Monkees. They have style but look authentic and fresh — it’s hard to imagine them in anything like the formulaic heartthrob fashions of the more recent Backstreet Boys variety

Kreiling is proud and exhausted as we make our way up into the Houdini séance room. He kind of fell into this work — the accidental stylist. A Chicago native, he started off doing wearable art, or what he calls “sculptural crazy fashion.” He went to college with bassist Nordwind, though Kulash remembers first meeting Kreiling dancing on a pool table at a party. When OK Go signed with Capitol and moved to L.A., they looked to Kreiling for help.

“I’ve done them lots of fashion favors,” laughs Kreiling. “In the beginning, being a new band, it’s hard to establish yourself unless you’re very stylish. Otherwise, it’s hard for marketability. Teenage girls won’t like you unless you look hot, or if you’re just, like, wearing jeans and a T-shirt.”

There, he’s said it. Most people don’t want to admit it, because it sounds shallow or superficial, but the fashion and style of a band have always been important to the success of that band. From the Temptations in the ’50s, with their matching suits, to the long, hair-sprayed locks of ’80s metal bands, having a “look” has always been important. Even with grunge in the early ’90s, not having a style became a style.

These days, music and fashion are so bound in a reciprocal swap of art form that many bands are taking style to a new level.

Of course, OK Go’s style didn’t start out on a high plane. Odds are you saw them dancing on treadmills in that music video on YouTube. (see end of story for video)

“Fifteen to 20 million people saw us on YouTube,” says Kulash, “but I don’t mistake that for a giant fan base or think that means we were universally liked. The thing that was cool about it was it wasn’t cool. It was fun and inclusive, and it spread by word of mouth. People sent it to their friends.”

Kulash had asked his sister to come up with a dance routine, to confuse their fans. They came up with the “A Million Ways” backyard dance to, as Kulash says, “break the format of a hipster rock show by giving joy.” That first dance was downloaded so much they decided to raise the stakes and came up with the treadmill dance.

“The difference between music videos and Internet music videos is that Internet videos make you like people,” Kulash says. “They don’t feel like an armature of promotion, like in MTV videos. They’re not this big and glossy thing over a band.”After the treadmill dance, OK Go had to come up with something equally catchy and inclusive. So they had their pal Kreiling design a set with suits. The background was covered in furniture upholstery, and he designed suits with hoods that covered the wearer’s face in the same fabric.

“We got our friends and a few dancers to wear these Hazmat suits made out of this ornate brocade and dance,” Kulash says. “They’d blend into the background and disappear. We liked the suits so much we got Chris to make us new ones for the Grammys.”

Those were the suits the band wore when they lay down on the red carpet at this year’s Grammys.

As Kulash explains, “We looked down and thought, this carpet is totally copying our style.”

Kreiling says creating the band’s suits has really pushed him into designing again. “It’s so great to work with these guys,” he says of the band, “ ’cause they’re so crazy. They can pull it off and be pranksters.”

Well-dressed pranksters, of course. The band is outfitted in designer labels like Valentino, Ted Baker, Costume National, Penguin and even Juicy Couture.

Kulash says he got tired of what had become the musician’s straitjacket of jeans and a T-shirt. In 2004, when the band played down the street from the Republican Convention, they thought it would be fun to dress like Republicans, so they all wore suits as a joke.

“That was the turning point,” says Kulash. “We’d added a theatricality to the show, and it was a natural fit. From then on, I just started dressing like this all the time.”

Except today. Just back from touring Germany, Kulash sent all his clothes to the cleaners, which has forced him to show up to the shoot in the dreaded jeans and T-shirt.

Nordwind laughs, “When I saw him, I said, ‘Wow, you’re so 2000 right now.’ ”

The band is touring with Snow Patrol in Japan and Australia, then going to the studio to record their next record. Kreiling will continue to help dress them for videos and shoots.

“It’s so great having someone who knows what you like, and gets it for you,” says Kulash.

“Yep,” says Damian, listing what each band member likes as if he’s reading a grocery list: “Damian always has to have his shirt cuffs come out from under his jacket, Tim likes sweater vests or a vest underneath things, Dan doesn’t want to wear a tie, and Andy is like a big kid — he doesn’t care.”

Beyond dressing the band, Kreiling is now ready to make the leap to designing custom suits for the public. He designed the suit Kulash wore on the cover of Rolling Stone, and he just got a new studio in Echo Park and is setting up with patternmakers.

“First,” he says, “I’m going to have prototypes to fit or make crazy brocade pieces, if people want them.”

But this is all in the embryonic stage. “There is a part that’s enjoyable about styling, but there’s a lot that’s not. It’s fun when you can make things look good and follow through an idea, but chasing 10,000 items and, you know, trying to find a diamond in the shag carpeting is not fun. I think designing will be nice.”

• Best Series / Ask a Ninja. Terecht. Goeie inhoud, geknipt formaat voor online video.
• Best Music Video / A beautiful song played by a talented girl. Euh ja, ze zal wel mooi zingen zeker? Don’t ask me!
• Most Inspirational / Free Hugs Campaign. Zinloos geknuffel waar ik eens over schreef in een sentimentele bui.
