Listen, just in case you have been under a rock for a week and missed this crazy run, check lil Barry out as he pulls a Sr and busts a long TD run. I must say that this run was bananas, but being from Ohio and watching Ohio High School football, this play wouldn’t have happened up here. Maybe I am biased, or maybe I am a hater… call me what you want.

I love high school football. Well, no, that’s not true, I do LOVE the TV show Friday Night Lig

I love high school football. Well, no, that’s not true, I do LOVE the TV show Friday Night Lights, and that’s ABOUT high school football. (On a side note, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE watch FNL when it airs on NBC in January, if only so that I may continue watching it, but you’ll love it too I promise.)

Anyhoo. I saw this amazing run by an Oklahoma high school FRESHMAN and it is awfully damn impressive, so I figured I had to share it with y’all. It reminds me of one of my favorite NFL players for some reason…

The player in question, a member of the Heritage Hall high school team has some pretty good gene lines to help him along his football career. That’s because his dad happens to be one of the greatest players in NFL and college history, one Barry Sanders. That’s right, meet Barry Sanders Jr! Looks like the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

I love this run, he breaks 3 tackles before he even gets to the second level of defenders, and then BOOM, he’s gone, no chance of catching up to him. Oh yeah, that’s 64 yards on a reverse, not too shabby…The defense looks totally over-matched, and Sanders is only a FRESHMAN! Yikes. Look out world. He already, at least for one play, looks like a man amongst boys. Also, maybe I’m wrong but he also seems to be a bit taller and bigger than his totally awesome dad. Here’s hoping for lots and lots more of the young master Sanders’ exploits.

You’ve seen Star Trek III. You may not want to admit it, but you have.
Anyway, after Kirk, Scotty and Chekov set the Enterprise up to self destruct (it’s been almost 25 years. You don’t need a spoiler alert tag), Kirk is seen “hustling” to get off the ship. He’s sort of running, sort of jogging. If you don’t remember, here it is, about 1:15 or so in.

Got the idea? Good, I’ll come back to it.

For the past year or so, I don’t know if I could have mustered even this weak effort to escape certain peril. Well, tonight, I managed to hit a sustained jog for a while, out of necessity.

I covered a high school game tonight (Edmond vs. Del City, when it gets posted) that ended on a last-second touchdown pass. For those of you sports writers, or other deadline demons, you know that the excitement always comes about one hour, or less, before deadline. For me, it was much less. I had about 45 minutes to get quotes, write a story and do stats. The only way to do it was to run, baby run.

This time last year, I don’t think I could have. Or, at least, I’d be dead to the world for about 15 minutes after so doing. Tonight, I ran from the press box, got the interview and ran back.

Thank God Kirk made the shuffle cool (Shut up! He did!), because that’s what my lumbering resembled by the time I was getting back up the stairs.

Still, they don’t give style points, just dollars, at deadline. Made it with two minutes to spare.

Friday night the two schools that are within 10-miles of each other renew the rivalry at Union- Tuttle Stadium.

These two have combined to win the last twelve Oklahoma Class 6A titles.

This will be the first time since 2003 that the two won’t be playing at the University of Tulsa because of repairs to Chapman Stadium.

The High School Football Huddle will have a complete game wrap-up later tonight. For more news and scores from the Sooner State, click here to go to the Oklahoma High School Football Huddle.

It’s the longest uninterrupted series in the state this weekend as Eufaula takes on Checotah, and for the first time in several years, it might also be the type of barnburner appropriate for such a rivalry.

Both are coming off impressive victories — nothing as new for Eufaula, which in spite of missing the playoffs entirely in 2006 and being knocked out in the first round in 2007, is used to playing at a high level, which it did in a 48-8 win over Keys last week.

Checotah, meanwhile, barely missed the playoffs with a late run, winning two of its final three games last season after winning just once in its first seven games. The Wildcats used that momentum under first-year coach Brandon Turley to begin year two with a 39-0 pasting of Morris

Is it enough to end a nine-game losing streak in the series?

“They were very impressive in their first win,” Eufaula coach Johnny Bohannon said of the Wildcats. “They’ve evolved into a very good football team. That’s just something that’s been proven with coach Turley over the last year.”

To stop the streak, Checotah must stop Eufaula’s Ethan Sharpe. The senior quarterback shredded the Keys secondary with 230 yards and five touchdowns last week.

“That’s our number one priority on the defensive side of the ball, to get pressure on him,” Turley said. “Sharpe’s got a great arm and he’ll pick a defense apart if you let him.”

Turley also had high praise for the receiving group at Eufaula.

“Once they get the ball in the open field they can make a five-yard pass into a 60-yard touchdown,” he said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. Obviously when you face a quarterback like that you’ve got be really prepared with your defensive backs and linebackers.”

Bohannon also said for them to be successful they have shut down Checotah quarterback Kyle Coleman and running back Chris Carr.

“Coleman and Carr are both equal strengths and you have to shut them down,” he said. “With those two weapons inside we’ve got to work hard and prepare.”

Turley is confident his team matches up well with Eufaula this year.

“We’re in year two of our program, and the kids are comfortable with the offense and defense,” he said. And they’ve won the last several meeting but we feel like we got a great chance. It’ll be a really good game.”

Even though Eufaula has won the last nine meetings, Bohannon said it’ll be difficult this week.

“It’s going to be a tough challenge this week,” he said.” We got to play mistake-free and not give up big plays. It will not be an easy game.”

By Mike Kays
Muskogee Phoenix Sports Editor

Dale Condict was either unlucky or in the wrong place at the wrong time when it came to scheduling issues for the Wagoner Bulldogs this fall.

First, a trip to the northeast corner of the state and Miami.

Second, an 80-mile trip to meet its staunchest former district rival, Grove.

Two weeks and no home game, but guess what? Class 5A power East Central comes south next week to battle the Bulldogs, who were moved to 4A-4 this season after three seasons that produced a state finalist and two state semifinalist squads.

“We looked around but it just came down to having to play somebody,” Condict said. “When East Central wanted to switch from a home-and-home at Broken Bow to us, it was pretty much automatic for them.

“And it’s not a bad deal for us, really. McGuinness (the defending 4A champion who beat Wagoner in the semifinals) played Guthrie (the 5A champion) in Week 1. Those are great games to see where you are at and where you need to be.”

Same, you might say, with Grove, Wagoner’s biggest and most recent district nemesis. The Bulldogs beat the Ridgerunners 28-21 in Week 9 to wrap up 4A-3 last season. The year before, the two teams were again 1-2 but Grove made it to the championship game Wagoner made in 2005, but the Bulldogs in 2006 were on the opposite end of the bracket and lost to eventual state champion McGuinness in the semifinals.

Wagoner (1-0) comes into the game ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press Class 4A poll. Grove is No. 4.

Condict doesn’t see his team peeking ahead to East Central, No. 3 in Class 5A and a team the Bulldogs haven’t seen.

“We know what Grove has and what they’re capable of, so no, our focus is on this week,” he said. “They’re easier to prepare for since you’ve seen them so often, but we’ll have our hands full without a doubt.”

Last week, Grove beat McDonald County, Mo., 56-7, amassing 557 total offensive yards, 463 on the ground. Corey Davenport had 179 of those, scoring four times and Bud Maples had 137 yards.

Davenport, Condict said, is also part of a kick return game that’s become his biggest concern.

“Some of our cover people are new so this is going to be a challenge,” he said. “They also like to run trick plays — they scored on one last year and had a hitch-and-pitch they execute well that got them into the finals in 2006.”

By Jeff Fisher
The High School Football Huddle

The 2008 Oklahoma high school football season doesn’t open until September 4th, and once again, all eyes will be on the state’s top two programs Jenks and Union. Those two schools, that are only 10-miles apart, have combined to win 13 of the state’s last 15 Class 6A titles.

Surprisingly though, Jenks, which has won back-to-back titles and has10 state championships since 1993, opens the season ranked second in the state’s 6A pre-season poll behind it’s arch-rival Union. Of course the argument is always settled on the field…sometimes twice in a season.

In 2007, Union won the regular season game 43-42 in overtime, but Jenks won the state title game 42-24. This year’s regular season showdown, which is usually played in front of 30,000 fans, will take place on September 12th.

Here’s a look at the Pre-Season 6A Rankings….

1. Union (13-1)
2. Jenks (13-1)
3. Norman North (9-3)
4. Muskogee (9-4)
5. Midwest City (12-1)
6. Owasso (9-3)
7. Broken Arrow (6-5)
8. Edmond Sante Fe (5-5)
9, Putname City North (8-3)
10. Westmoore (8-4)
