So this morning started with me waking up with headphones double wrapped around my neck where I slep

So this morning started with me waking up with headphones double wrapped around my neck where I slept with my ipod on and had somehow turned around in my sleep, still half asleep, I then fall out of the bed. No joke, I actually rolled over to far, you know when you wake in your sleep and mis-calculate how far from the edge of the bed you are and then roll over……. So I get up take the wires off my neck put in my contact lenses get ready and then leave the house…… and then this shit happened.

I go into the Co-op where the staff there know me, they all know who I am I am in there every day, and in the morning there is only two people working. So I say my good mornings and put my items on the counter and then as usual ask for 20 Marlboro Reds, only to hear the below vomited in my face by the checkout man, and this was the conversation we had;

Checkout Guy: “Can I see your ID Please?”

Me: “Sorry?”

Checkout Guy: “Do you have any ID?”

Me: “ID? For what?”

Checkout Guy: “The cigarettes, if you look under 25 years old we need to check your ID”

Me: “Are you for real?, You know who I am, I am in here every day, you have checked my ID before, in fact all of you have, and you all know how old I am!”

Checkout Guy: “I know, but it’s a new thing now, we have to check ID every time if someone looks under the age of 25, otherwise we lose our jobs if we don’t, I know your old enough, but I still need to check you’re ID”

Me: “Seriously (I then go slam my bag on the counter and start rummaging to find my driving licence) seriously this is ridiculous your now making me late for work, this is so stupid”

I then hand my licence to the guy and he checks it meticulously and hands it back….

Checkout Guy: “Thank you, I know it’s embarrassing for us to ask you, but we lose our jobs if we don’t, and we need to check it now”

Me: I get a pack of chewing-gum and put it on the counter and say “can I have these as well or do you need a birth certificate and fingerprint for airwaves?”

Checkout Guy: Looks at me like I just killed his mother

Me: “OK I know it’s your job I am not questioning that, but its stupid when you already know how old I am, it’s wasting my time and it’s wasting yours and all your customers”

Checkout Guy: “It’s the new rules now, but so you know now, Every time you come in to buy cigarettes we need to check your ID each time even if it’s me again, you need to show it all the time”

Me: “Oh fuck off, I don’t mean to swear but please have some form of common sense, MY DATE OF BIRTH DOES NOT CHANGE IN LINE WITH THE WEATHER! It stays the same, errrrm like, FOR EVER!”

Then I just walk out the shop and turned my ipod on the highest volume, and switched from snoop doggy to MARALYN MANSON that’s how angry I was.

I don’t know why it still bothers me when I get asked for ID, but it does and I don’t like it, even if I have my ID, it pisses me off. And seriously that is not what I need first thing in the morning after waking up choking, falling out the bed, to be asked for ID by someone who knows how old I am, really not the mood I want to be put in when I haven’t even walked in the office yet.

Seriously, I get the whole idea of why it’s important to check age and I know the pressures that these retailers are under by the government to ensure no laws are broken, but please HAVE SOME COMMON SENSE TOO!

And worst thing of all, is when the person asking for ID for something so minor like a lighter or something, takes your ID, and then doesn’t even recognise what ID it is, because their not from the UK and not familiar with what is ID and what is not, and then ask a colleague “Is this ID” .

So with this scenario now done with……

MESSAGE TO RETAILERS:

Please educate your staff on what it is your customers need to have ID for.

Please educate your staff regardless of what country they are from, what ID actually is.

Please educate your staff on what are acceptable forms of identification, and how to RECOGNISE the identification presented and also, how to calculate the customer’s date of birth so they can then proceed with the sale of goods.

Please ask your staff to, at all times, RETAIN A BASIC LEVEL OF COMMON SENSE when enforcing regulations set by your head office.

Bitch fit over.

OH AND BY THE WAY TRANSPORT FOR FUCKING LONDON:

I WANT THE PRICE OF 2 DAYS TICKETS, REFUNDED TO MY DEBIT CARD FOR THE MONTHLY TRAVEL CARD I PAID £102 FOR, BUT WAS UNABLE TO REDEEM THIS FARE DUE TO YOUR SELFICSH INCONCIDERATE STAFF STRIKING BECAUSE THEY WANT A 5% PAY RISE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO STAND ON PLATFORMS ALL DAY, WHICH BY THE WAY IS THEIR JOB!

BY MY CALCULATIONS I SHOULD BE REFUNDED £9.60, THAT’S THE AMOUNT I WOULD BE CHARGED HAD I BEEN ABLE TO USE MY NORMAL ROUTE.

The Raconteurs are, in my opinion, the best band out right now. They are a supergroup of sorts, made up of musicians from Detroit and Cincinnati, although they officially say they’re from Nashville. The band is made up of singer/guitarists Jack White (White Stripes) and Brendan Benson, bassist Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes) and drummer Patrick Keeler (The Greenhornes). The fourth track on Consolers of the Lonely, their second album which was released in the Spring of 2008, is called “Old Enough.” It’s a great rock song that sounds like it could have come straight off of Led Zeppelin III with the fiddle that carries the song.

In a display of what can happen when a bunch of truly great musicians come together, this video is a bluegrass remake of the song featuring Ricky Skaggs, a 12-time Grammy Award winning country and bluegrass musician, and Ashley Monroe, an up-and-coming country singer. You should enjoy it.

If you aren’t familiar with the song, listen here to the original first before watching the video.

BOOM. New Thursday song is up on their MySpace page and it’s a real scorcher. Very, very pro

BOOM. New Thursday song is up on their MySpace page and it’s a real scorcher. Very, very promising stuff. I command thou to go listen to “Resuscitation of a Dead Man” right now, right here. And listen to “Ladies and Gentlemen: My Brother the Failure” once more while you’re there. Because, wow, that’s still as awesome as it was when it came out. So, go on. Scoot.

Go!

Okay, you’re back? Cool. Did you know that Radiohead has a video for “Reckoner”? I had no clue. Well, they do and it’s one of my favorite songs from the Grammy nominated (as if you care) In Rainbows. Here it be:

It turns out there was an entire contest back this summer to create an animated video for one of their songs. How does this stuff not make my radar? Anyway, here’s a link to the contest page and here’s one to the first of at least five pages of submissions. There are 45 videos on each page. That, my friends, is some serious animaniacs…

Lastly, I mentioned the White Stripes yesterday and while I freely admit I’m not a full-time congregational member of the Church of Jack White (I dabble occasionally) I did run across something the other day that made me raise an eyebrow. The Raconteurs did a bluegrass version of their song “Old Enough” off of their latest Consolers of the Lonely. The song features Ricky Skaggs and Ashley Monroe and you can watch the video right here:

I have to give Jack credit. He can pretty much do whatever he wants right now and get it released and get the attention of the mainstream press. And clearly he’s taking advantage of that. But I wonder if there’s a point of oversaturation or overcollaboration where the novelty of seeing him with someone unexpected wears off. Remember when the Super Bowl half-time show organizers went through that horrible phase where they would just put fifteen random musicians on stage and have them bumble through some horrible medley or cover tune? It was as if they were just counting on us going “Oh my God! It’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry with Justim Timberlake, Dave Navarro, Mary J. Blige, Tony Bennett, and P. Diddy!!” But that excitement only lasted those first few moments before they started playing and then it was just “Oh my God. It’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry with Justin Timberlake, Dave Navarro, Mary J. Blige, Tony Bennet, and P. Diddy. This. Is. Horrible.”

So, yeah. I hope that doesn’t happen with Jack. More tomorrow…

We prefer The White Stripes to The Raconteurs, but we’ll take John Gillis any way we can get him. HERE he is performing “Old Enough” with the rest of The Raconteurs, Ricky Skaggs and, surprisingly, Ashley Monroe.

There’s a really cool version of “Old Enough” floating around now, that shows Jack White & Co. playing a bluegrassy version of the song with country legend Ricky Scaggs and newcomer Ashley Monroe. There are smiles a-plenty and the song is good enough to rival the original, which of course appears on Consolers of the Lonely.

Check it out here.

You can get the song digitally from Amazon starting today, and it’ll show up at other digital outlets on 12/9. It’s also coming out on CD that same day, and on 7″ on 12/16.

I heard it on my car stereo earlier today and I was blown away by the beauty of it. Unfortunately the YouTube video doesn’t serve the sound of the song right at all but I hope you guys will check it out on mp3 or CD as well.

I secretly decided to start a blog about two and a half weeks ago. One problem: my brand new compute

I secretly decided to start a blog about two and a half weeks ago. One problem: my brand new computer gave me a big F You. Dell joined in… but alas, Best Buy pretended to care. The Geek Squad sent my computer away for a week, and then returned the 4 week old machine… still ka-put.

I hadn’t given the idea of entering the blogosphere a second thought. After arriving in DC, however, I’ve been hounded by my superiors on why blogging is the worst idea since the time MJ dangled Blanket over a balcony in Germany. The corporate world will find me… read about me… and then fire me! So, I figured it would probably be in my best interest to start one up. Here I am, a month into my DC experience and FiftyDollarBill is in circulation!

I need to do this. I’ve realized my memory is horrendous. At work, every Friday I have to turn in a “Friday Note,” a summary of my weekly deeds. As easy as it sounds, I cannot do it. That is the story of my life. When I make my return to the “Heart of it All,” I’ll have no “Memories… all alone in the moooooonlight.”

As I sit on my bed, desklessly writing away, the sound of my generic pop rock music is overshadowed by the neighbor. Techno. Non-stop. Through the night. When I get home from work. Techno. The same song. Over and over. Such a tease too. About 3 minutes in, the beat subsides… ending. Wrong. It’s back.

Or how about the time my roommates jumped on my bed attempting to get me to halfway acknowledge their existence. The problem, on top of the obvious, was that they were holding smoked salmon jerky in their hands straight from Canada’s Neighbor. Chunks of dehydrated fish left behind, which I batted onto the floor, not a big problem. Except for it was smeared on my pillow case and sheets… leaving me to fall asleep amidst an aura of beef jerky meets salmon meets feet meets sex couch meets jackass.

And an NYC encounter with She-man. Whom I met after being “old enough” to stay in the bar. And swimming in a table full of coke and rum.

This blog is meant to remember moments like those.

When I have an ounce of time and a 5 Hour Energy drink, I will give an update on life in DC so far. And also my first voyage into the Big Apple… where I was joined by 1 half of the JD’s for a kick-ass weeklong concert festival.
Until then, here’s what I have to look forward to:

Visit from pal from home, Mount Vernon, Rendez-vous with the Cheifs, and the 4th of July. Also, the new book I started and pro-bono projects.

My life is boring, rather unmemorable. Until now.

Ok so Im not actually 15 yet, my birthday is on the 5th January, but I was thinking what this means to me.

Im not sure where the stage comes that society starts to view teens as responsible young adults instead of untrusted silly youth. I think there is definatly a difference between the age of 12 and 13. Coming into your teens does create a different thought it peoples minds. You are no longer that young and inncoent 12 year old, but now older and more mature….and all of of this just in the space of a day, and all in the sound of a word…’teen’.

I dont know where the phrase …’Aw he’s old enough to do that himself’…is allowed to start being used in the life of a teen. In my experience it seems at 13 and 14 I was still too young to do things safely or well enough. However friends and family who are 15 or 16 are allowed to do things with the reasoning that…..they are old enough. So this must mean that in society there is an age of where ‘old enough’ has a line drawn. Your ‘old enough’ to play the lottery at 16, your ’old enough’ to drive at 17, your ‘old enough’ to drink at 18. So at 14, 15, what are you ‘old enough’ to do?

Well I guess I’ll soon be 15, so I’ll see what new responsibilities I will have!
