Hanoi has been inhabited since at least 3000 BC. One of the first known permanent settlements is the Co Loa citadel (Cổ Loa) founded around 200 BC.

Hanoi has had many names throughout history, all of them of Sino-Vietnamese origin. During the Chinese domination of Vietnam, it was known as Tống Bình (宋平) and later Long Đỗ (龍肚; literally “dragon’s belly”). In 866, it was turned into a citadel and was named Đại La (大羅).

In 1010, Lý Thái Tổ, the first ruler of the Lý Dynasty, moved the capital of Đại Việt (大越, the Great Viet, then the name of Vietnam) to the site of the Đại La Citadel. Claiming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he renamed it Thăng Long (昇龍, Ascending dragon) – a name still used poetically to this day.

As a way of celebrating Hanoi’s history Philippe Chaplin has researched a wide range of images of Hanoi,from the last 150 years, most of which  are photographs. What is interesting is that although Hanoi is rapidly developing many of the scenes  represented in the photos can be seen today.

This is Hanoi 1862 while the cyclo is still a common site in Hanoi in 2009 (however with the rapid rise in 4 wheel traffic it is probably an endangered species.

The street barber (who also manicures the ears and nose with the deftness of a surgeon) is another common sight in Hanoi in 2009. A tree is normally all that is needed or corner of a building -enough to hang a mirror (and sometimes steal some electricity from an overhead cable) and to place a chair.

Singers may not be a common sight on the streets of Hanoi today but he Cheo performers (traditional opera) still perform twice a week in th newly upgraded theatre.

Just reconnected with my old flickr account and came across this photo of J and I at our first ‘event’ as a couple.

Loving the hair back then. Mine, that is.

इ.सन. १९३० ते १९४० …त्या काळी फोटो काढणं म्हणजे एक खुप कांहीतरी महत्वाचं, आणि सामान्यांच्या आवाक्या  बाहेरचं काम होतं. फोटो काढणे हे फक्त गर्भ श्रीमंत किंवा मोठ्या हुद्यावर असलेल्यांचीच मक्तेदारी असायची.

माझ्या काकाच्या घरी ब्लॅक ऍंड व्हाइट काढलेले ते जुने  फोटो ग्राफ्स जेंव्हा एका जुन्या पेटी मधे सापडले तेंव्हा , चक्क एक खजीना हाती लागला असे वाटले आणि ते फोटो सगळ्यांनी मिळुन  पहातांना पण खुप मजा वाटली. बऱ्याच लोकांना आम्ही ओळखत नव्हतो, मग काका सांगायचे, हा बाळ भोंदु , हा  सुरेश भट, वगैरे वगैरे..

प्रत्येक फोटो ची एक कहाणी आहे. वडिलांनां/काकांना विचारले तर त्यांनी बर्याच जुन्या फोटो मधल्या  लोकां बद्दल  .माहिती दिली. बरेच लोकं तर काळाच्या ओघात या जगात पण राहिलेले नाहीत. पण फोटो च्या स्वरुपातल्या आठवणी आहेत.

हल्ली मोबाइल कॅमेरामुळे फोटो काढणं जरी सोप्पं झालं असलं तरीही जुन्या फोटो ची मजा काही औरच आहे.हल्ली  केंव्हाही, आणि कधीही कॅमेरा हातात असल्यामुळे सारखं उठ सुट फोटो काढणं सुरु असतं, कुठल्याही फोटो स्टुडिओ मधे गेलं की हवी असल्यास याची प्रिंट पण घेता येते चार रुपयात..

……….पण हे जे जुने फोटो आहेत त्यांची गम्मत वेगळीच .ह्या जुन्या फोटो मधे त्या काळच्या फॅशन्स, किंवा रहाणी मानाचं प्रतिबिंब दिसुन येतं. इथे कांही सिलेक्टीव्ह फोटो पोस्ट करतोय.. फोटोंचा काळ आहे १९२५ ते १९७० पर्यंतचा.

आमच्या घरी एक मेड इन इंग्लंड कॅमेरा होता. त्या मधे २० एम एम ची फिल्म बसायची. त्या फिल्म ला कॅमेऱ्यामधे बसवणं पण एक कला होती.  मला आठवतं की त्या कॅमेऱ्यात फिल्म बसवतांना नेहेमी दोन तिन स्नॅप्स खराब व्हायचे. पण नंतर येणारे जे फोटो असायचे ते मात्र अप्रतीम किंवा अगदी पुर्णपणे फेल्युअर.. म्हणजे असं, की चांगले फोटो काढले तर ती तुमचं  कौशल्य, आणि बिघडवले, तर त्याचा अर्थ की तुम्हाला फोटो काढता आला नाही.त्या कॅमेऱ्यात अपार्चर, आणि फोकस सेट करावा लागायचा. एक जरी चुक झाली की फोटो बिघडला.

बऱ्याच लोकांच्या ऍगफा आयसोली नावाच एक प्रिमिट्व्ह कॅमेरा असायचा. त्याने फोटो काढणे पण एक कलाच होती.

हा माझ्या वडिलांचा फोटो.. ते जेंव्हा पाच वर्षाचे होते तेंव्हा म्हणजे साधारण ७९ वर्षापुर्वीचा फोटो आहे हा. हा फोटो घराच्या पडवीत ( ओसरी मधे) काढलेला आहे. मागचा तट्टा दिसु नये म्हाणुन एक गालिचा मागे लावलेला दिसतो. पण जर तो मागचा तट्टाच असु दिला असता तर फोटॊ नक्कीच जास्त छान आला असता.शर्ट तर ठीक आहे, पण कोटाच्या बाह्या लहान झालेल्या दिसताहेत. पायातले बुट पहा.. म्हणजे ७० -७५ वर्षापुर्वी ची फॅशन असावी ती.अंगामधे वुलनचा कोट आणि पॅंट आहे. हे म्हणजे सुखवस्तु पणाचं लक्षण मानलं जायचं.

हा फोटो सौ. आणि तिचे दोन भाउ यांचा. साधारण १९६९ सालचा असावा. तिघंही बघा ह्या फोटो मधे कसे नॅचरल पोझ देउन बसले आहेत ते.

हा फोटो आहे माझ्या आजोबांचा , इंदौरच्या विल्सन कॉलेजातुन ( बहुतेक नांव बरोबरच असावं) ग्रॅजुएशन पुर्ण केलं तेंव्हाचा-त्यांच्या बरोबर शिकलेल्या मित्रांच्या बरोबर काढलेला आहे हा... १९२२ सालचा.धोतर, बुट, कोट टोपी.. त्या काळच्या कॉलेज कुमारांचे परिधान..

आजोबा तहसिलदार होते, त्यांचे कोणितरी फिरंगी बॉस.. आज्जी ने नांव सांगितलं होतं, पण विसरलो. फोटो आहे खांडव्याचा..

या फोटो मधे आहे मी, स्वामी राजरत्नानंद या नावाने जो कॉमेंट्स टाकतो नां तो आर्किटेक्ट राजीव.. आणि माझी आत्या.

त्या काळी पाचवार साडी नेसणं, आणि स्नो पावडर लावणं म्हणजे खुप फॅशन करणं असा अर्थ होता. कुटिकुरा मलम ( कुटिकुराचं फेस क्रीम मिळायचं असं आज्जी सांगायची  आणी त्या क्रिम ला मलम म्हणायचे ) आणि कुटीकुरा पावडर म्हणजे एकदम हाय क्लास प्रॉडक्ट्स..

आजोबांनी तेंव्हा मोटर घेतली होती. (तीला आज्जी मोटरंच म्हणायची) ऑस्टिन मायनर आणि आत्या . १९४०-४५ सालचा फोटो असावा हा.

अजुन एक जुना फोटो..माझे काका आणि आत्या..

त्या काळी कार म्हणजे एक अल्टीमेट लक्झुरी  समजली जायची. नविन कार घेतल्यावर सिट कव्हर नव्हते म्हणुन गालीचाचे तुकडे करुन ते बसायला वापरले होते, असे आज्जी सांगायची.

मोटर घेतली तेंव्हा ती एक नव्हाळी होती. कार नविनच आली होती .फक्त पार्शी लोकंच कार घ्यायचे.. आणि भारतीय +मराठी माणुस कार घेतो, म्हणजे एक मोठी गोष्टं, म्हणुन कार च्या बरोबर बरेच फोटो आहेत काढलेले.

या सगळ्यांच्या कपड्यांवर मास्टर भगवानचा ठ्प्पा दिसतो की नाही?? तेंव्हा पायजामा जस्ट फॅशन मधे आलेला असावा. पॅंट कोट वगैरे पण होतेच.. पण ते उच्च पदस्थांसाठी. इतर सामान्य लोकं पायजामा शर्ट, किंवा धोतर वापरायचे.

काका, वडिल आणि त्यांची मित्र मंडळी.. कपडे बघा कसे आहेत ते.. त्या काळी धोतर नेसणे बंद करुन पायजामा वगैरे वापरणे जस्ट सुरु झाले होते...

हा मी, एकदा ट्रेकींग हुन परत येतांना बस बंद पडली होती , तेंव्हा एका मित्राने क्लिक केला . मी सिगरेट ओढत नाही बरं का आता..हा फोटो आहे २५ वर्षापुर्वीचा..

त्या वेळेस जस्सी जैसी हे सिरियल खुप पॉप्युलर होतं. त्यामुळे बाहुलीचं नांव होतं जस्सी, आणि तो बाहुला अरमान. बहिणीकडे तिसऱ्या मजल्याचं बांधकाम सुरु होतं, म्हणुन तिथे भिंतीवर रंगवणं  जस्सी वेड्स अरमान वगैरे. खुप काही केलं होतं मुलींनी.. त्याच सुमारास वडिलांची ७५वी झाली होती, म्हणुन सगळी मोठी माणसं पण होती या लग्नाला.

बाहुलीचं लग्नं झाल्यानंतर दोन्ही विहीणी केक कापतांना..लग्नं तर झालं.पण नंतर झालेली भांडणं पण खुप आठवणीत आहेत.बाहुलीचं लग्नं झालं, आता तीला इथेच ठेउन जा म्हणुन..

असे कमीत कमी १०० च्या वर फोटो सापडले आहेत. मस्त खजीना आहे . तुमच्याही घरी असेल. शोधा..आणखिनही असे बरेच फोटो आहेत,   हे असे जुने फोटो सापडले की मग ते पहातांना वेळ कसा जातो तेच समजत नाही. इट्स फन…

A few thrift store finds and Rebecca W.’s finished Market Tote! First a defiant little girl, I mean, look at that face! Can you say strong will? Egads.

More shoes, had to get them. (I do have a creative reason) Barb made me (yes, you did Barb, you know you did!) when she bought a metal/wood…shelf thing (sorry, not a good description) with cubby holes for her wool pieces. Has an advertisement on the back so she’ll have to display it so you can see all sides. Anyhow, I was caught up in the excitement and figured I would probably never see shoes like this again and would kick myself later if I didn’t…so, I did.

That last paragraph sounds like a justification doesn’t it? Hm, maybe it is. And now, Rebecca’s tote. Every one that I’ve seen is so different on the button crest/stencil side, a personal touch from the maker.

And the miniature quilted pocket side. Thanks Rebecca for letting me post this!

I was looking through some old photographs and dug up these photos of a shoot I did with my friend, Steph.

Taken in the central business district on a Sunday morning. Raffles Place was very quiet, which all worked out since Steph needed the backgrounds to be un-busy. That was the fundamental criteria that her professor demanded for this photo series assignment.

These were taken pre-Wottoncool days, early early in 2008, and the strongest memory was that out of the blue (sky) it rained!

There! Proof! hahas. (:

The weather was very erratic that day and we kept praying that the heavens wouldn’t open up repeatedly and get in the way of shooting. Cos even when the weather was better, the sun would frequently hide behind the clouds and affect the light. (I don’t know how to describe it in photography lingo, so I shan’t try)

And, it you can’t already tell, there was no budget for the shoot. I was the model + helper + stylist + wardrobe. Steph doubled as creative director + makeup artist + hair stylist + photographer + wardrobe.
