It’s a modern retelling of the old “I killed your master!” revenge tale, and it tells it in a bold, brutally efficient way.

Review by: MiamiMovieCritic

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: Mobster crosses paths with young kid. Kid grows up and idolizes mobster – dresses like him, even talks like him. Their fates become inextricably entwined.

Sounds like A BRONX TALE, doesn’t it? It also summarizes the plot of Eric Won’s KEN, which is more of an action picture than Robert De Niro’s directorial debut. It’s a film that values action and movement over narrative. Gangsters talk monotonously about double-crosses and business deals gone awry. Everything they say is utterly inconsequential. The film is more concerned with elemental things like honor and revenge. It’s a modern retelling of the old “I killed your master!” revenge tale, and it tells it in a bold, brutally efficient way.

The kid is named Ken. A homeless boy with fists of fury, Ken gets into a fight one day. This scene made me wonder: Do emo kids have trouble winning fights with all that hair in their eyes? The answer is yes, because Ken nearly gets knifed. A gangster named Jack saves him at the last second and takes him under his wing. I love the transition that comes after this scene. There’s no title card telling us that 20 years have passed. Instead, Won uses cinematic language to move the story along and show how the characters have progressed.

“Cinematic language” is the movie’s greatest strength. Won has a great sense of screen space and atmosphere, especially in the action scenes. The twist at the end really took me by surprise. I’m not sure it’s completely satisfying on a dramatic level, but it has some of the same out-of-nowhere nastiness as Park Chan-Wook’s brilliant OLDBOY.

I watched ‘Oldboy‘ in 2006 and pegged it a good movie, but it wasn’t until I watch

I watched ‘Oldboy‘ in 2006 and pegged it a good movie, but it wasn’t until I watched it a second time that it was so noticeably great. I tried to describe it to a friend and couldn’t peg it as a thriller or a horror movie. That is why it is so successful — because it merges both so effectively.

Discussion and severe spoilers after the jump. Don’t read if you haven’t seen the film or it will ruin the whole experience.

The decade is coming to an end. The climax of this film, which takes place in Lee Woo-jin’s penthouse apartment, is in the running for a best scene in that time period. The scene itself is over twenty minutes and is so masterfully paced. We have a fight, sure, and as Woo-jin is explaining himself to Oh Dae-su (and us), he equips himself in a classy suit which, it seems, makes him feel superior to everyone else, like he is above them morally and they cannot possibly understand the love he had for his sister.

Dae-su cuts off his tongue and barks like a bitch on the floor, and there is dark comedy here. Yet, it is hard to laugh because the situation is so morbid and demented and, well, gross.

The moment that makes the scene and the film, though, is when Woo-jin tosses Dae-su the remote to stop his pacemaker. This was greatly set up earlier in the film, and both us and Dae-su think it will work — that Woo-jin will just fall over, Kill Bill-style. We are damn anxious for Woo-jin to keel over. The button is pressed, and he does not fall, but over the loudspeaker is the recording of Dae-su and Mi-do making love. This is possibly the cruelest revenge ploy ever. And then Woo-jin takes his own life in the elevator, which, at this point, seems inconsequential, to be honest.

And to critique, I could have also done without the last scenes where we revisit hypnosis and all that jazz. But the film to begin with, and up to the climax, is so tense and so scary that this is truly a fantastic film.

OldBoy seria protagonizado por Will Smith… hahahahahahahahaha!!!

Only a couple years after my first viewing of Oldboy, news broke that Spielberg and Will Smith were collaborating on a remake. I think everyone, everywhere was unhappy about the news. It turns out Dreamworks (production company owned by Spielberg) was unable to secure the right from Mandate (the company responsible for the manga that Oldboy is based on). Ergo…no Oldboy remake!

this is our first of many posts. i (shawn) of oldboy am going to bring you along on our journey. for those who have been here from the start…thank you with all my heart. to anyone new, welcome.

this band is all about playing good songs to good people and having it be a memorable night for everyone. no matter what happens, people never forget an oldboy show. not for anything crazy, but they seem to be very individual, having an identity of thier own.

right now we are rebuilding. we are trying out a new drummer, kevin. we are about to play our first show out of this area and are in the middle of writing and revamping our sound. getting back to the basics of what we love about music. simple, and to the point. that doesn’t mean boring or basic. simple like a well assembled dish of food. and the right atmosphere to make you comfortable while enjoying it.

one of my good friends just lent out thier third floor to us so we can use it for our music. to write, to play, to record, to brainstorm, i believe it is going to push us in a really creative way.

thank you for stopping by.

I’ll say this for Lynch, he’s made a name for himself. And by that, I mean, he’s made his name a genre onto itself. Weird horror? Weird Americana? Esoterica existentialism? We could spend a decade defining it.

The other day I was actually talking with someone about cinema, about horror and sci fi directors, directors who step outside the norm a tad, and through the course of just bullshitting and casual riffing, I started comparing Lynch with Canada’s David Cronenberg. Another man who’s made his name into a genre all of it’s own. A man who’s every choice seems to be a weird one. And when he plays normal? It’s even weirder.

And I can think of no better example there than when he actually had a two episode acting stint in J. J. Abram’s Alias. Before that, he had several cameo roles in various movies, and weird ones too, of course, like Jason X, and The Fly, and Gus Van Sant’s To Die For.

The difference between these two directors, the difference than I can easily glean for you now, is that they’re both weird, but that with Cronenberg, I think he just lets his interests in body modification or transformation or infections of both the physical and psychological kind just run away with him. I love that wikipedia actually uses the term “venereal horror” to describe his personal brand of cinema.

But then there’s Lynch, who’s a weird guy, has weird tastes, likes to make weird art, and loves to cultivate his own weirdness. A lot of times, I think it’s just a part of his brand, his act, his personal style of show, but more times I get the impression of a man who walked off the reservation years ago, realized that he was leaving a certain kind of reality behind, probably smirked to himself, and kept going. His movies, his short films, his website and stunts are all just little polaroids that he shoots back to us from his journey.

Plus, I’m sure that even Morrissey thinks that David Lynch spends too much time on his hair.

I may be giving him too much credit there, but what’s the difference. Let’s talk about the major totems in his career…

Movies/TV shows of David Lynch’s that I have watched/enjoyed:

-Dune, the adaptation of the Frank Herbert “sci fi classic.”

-Twin Peaks, the TV show.

-Blue Velvet, or, well, most of it when I was a kid.

-Mulholland Drive, the failed TV that was resurrected into a film.

-About an hour and some change from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the movie follow up/prequel/general ephemera to the television show.

Twin Peaks the show was just 85 to 90% brilliant weird fun. A perfect television murder mystery before we were worried about semen stains and making lab work sexy meets the weirdness of small town America, and all of it recycled through David Lynch’s odd brain. There was a lot of elements to the show that were just weird for the sake of weirdness, but for the most part, I excuse it all because it never left the confines of the logic of the show. The logic of the show wasn’t necessarily easy to decipher, but once you get a legitimate idea of what’s going on with things like Bob, the arm, the doorknob, the talking backwards, the Black Lodge, and Laura Palmer in general, you just kind of get it. Also, one of the must frustratingly wonderful endings to a TV show ever.

Its’ the same for Mulholland Drive, which would’ve been murderously frustrating as a television show, but works perfectly as a film. It’s also hard to figure out at first, but give it some time, possibly a second viewing, and if needed, a friend to explain it to you, and you’ll get a tale of lost love and just brutal, puncturing sadness set against the glitz and flashy bizarrness of LA.

Dune is Dune. If you’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about. If you enjoyed it, you were probably on a lot of drugs or just a really gross person. Or maybe you’re a hardcore Sting fan? I don’t hate the movie by any means, but I’ll happily say that the Sci Fi channel miniseries version of the book was vastly better.

And now we delve into the darker recesses of me with the films of David Lynch that I’ve never seen:

-Eraserhead, his first film.

-Wild At Heart, which I really should’ve seen by now, at least for Nic Cage, if nothing else.

-Lost Highway, which had a soundtrack that I loved, or kinda loved, back in the 90s.

-The Straight Story, a fairly straightforward story of a real life man that just seems that much more creepy because it was done by Lynch.

-Inland Empire.

-And the rest of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Do you remember back when Bravo was a cable network that played real art, really culturally significant stuff? Classic movies and TV shows. Friday nights, I remember, would be foreign cinema and that’s where I’d see things like All About My Mother or Run Lola Run because, I guess I had no social life. I remember they used to play old Poirot movies all the time, mostly the Peter Ustinov ones, which were all pretty good.

Anyway, the point of me asking that is one summer they started playing episodes of Twin Peaks during the weekdays. This is where I first latched onto the show, and I remember that they played something like two episodes back to back starting at 9 AM. Now, if you really consider the weirdness/juicy soap opera factors in that show, then 9 AM is a really insidious time to air the show, leaving you creeped out through the rest of your youthful summertime abandon during the day, but hey, whatever.

But I loved the show. As I said, on one hand you had this bizarre police procedural gone crazy, and then on the other, you had a fantastical soap opera element as the show started to explore the facets of the various characters of the small town of Twin Peaks. And of course I was left hooked by the ending of the last episode. It was the ultimate cliffhanger, when your hero survives the trip to the Black Lodge that is so horrific that you can’t look away, only to discover that he may not be our hero after all…

Some actors that had an early start or appearance in their careers in Twin Peaks:

Heather Graham.

Lara Flynn Boyle.

Sherilyn Fenn.

Madchen Amick.

And David Duchovny, in drag.

Anyway, so Bravo aired the follow up film, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me a week or two after the syndicated run of the show ended and I was so excited to watch it, knowing that it’d handle some of what really happened to Laura Palmer, the teen whose murder initiated the show in general along with tackling a lot of the back story and featuring appearances by people like Keifer Sutherland, Chris Isaak, and David Bowie. Of course. These are perfectly Lynch-ian actors, much like Kyle MacLachlan doesn’t seem like a human being himself, just a caricature of a human drawn by David Lynch to snicker at.

Anyway, I’ve seen more bits and pieces of the film here and there since then, but haven’t been able to good and proper finish watching since that night I first sat down to watch it (on TV, no less!) and encountered this scene…

…featuring “my mother’s sister’s girl.” Even as I embed that youtube clip for you, I’m not watching it. I hope it’s the right one. I can’t handle it, man. You may look at it and think it’s tame and laugh at me. You’re probably right to. But watching it back then, something about it creeped me out past my then limits. It crawled inside my skin and started doing things and I had to leave the room and I haven’t come back to that particular metaphorical room since.

Hope you don’t mind me rambling on about David Lynch here but it’s Friday night and if you’re reading this, well, then you’re probably as lost as I am. But I’m someone who has, I’d like to think, watched a lot of movies across the years. My tastes are massively pretentious, and I’ll be the first to admit it, but in dichotomy, they’re also extremely low bro, just barely scraping the floor of what a human can stand to watch. And going along with that, I’m a horror movie fan. Hardcore, for the most part. I don’t really like “gore” movies, but it’s not typically a matter of finding them unsettling, just uninteresting. But one of the few times I ever felt nearly sick to my stomach was during a viewing of the unrated cut of Miike’s Ichi The Killer inflicted upon me by Conrad Noir. That film is deliriously gross and there’s a fun campiness to it. But there’s also a scene where a character very slowly cuts out his own tongue and seems to enjoy doing it and I nearly had to tap out there.

I could compare that scene with a similar one in Oldboy where a character has to do something similar, but unlike Ichi The Killer, it makes sense for the story and it’s not done in a way that attacks the viewer. It’s part of the story, an act of desperation, and kind of makes sense, even though it is an unsettling notion in general. I’ll stop there because I know everytime I bring up the words “Asian” and “cinema” in the same sentence, Benjamin Light falls asleep.

My point is that there’s really gorey stuff that can get to you and there’s psychological horror like, for example, Irreversible. And there’s movies that dance drunkely on the line in between the two, like the entire Saw set. Speaking of which, can you believe they plan to make at least 8 of these movies? Jesus fucking Christ.

And then there’s the special David Lynch touch. There’s moments in his films that are gorey and there’s moments that are flashes of psychological horror. And then there’s something else, something beyond those two. To me, Polanski was a master of the rare art of taking the creepy parts of a film and making it feel like they were in the room with you, crawling up behind you with a sick glint of terror in their eye. Gore (nice first name, buddy) Verbinski’s remake of The Ring had flashes of that same vibe. There was gore there, and existential dread, but with David Lynch, there’s something more there, something scary. I almost want him to throw some tentacles and racism in his movies so that I could say that his film studio lives in Cthulhu’s butt, man.

Another example, from near the beginning of Mulholland Drive:

I had forgotten that Phil from Lost/Jimmy Barret from Mad Men was in that scene. And yet, he’s perfect in it. And the film is shot perfectly, with the camera just hovering around these characters in semi-tight close ups in the diner, lost in the dreamtime as it fluctuates into a nightmare. It’s a brilliant decision to make us feel the character’s shock and fear rather than drift into cliched screams and quick cuts, etc. And sometimes the most horrific part of a terrible thing is being told exactly how it’s going to go down before it does. It’s what makes the ending of The Blair Witch Project work despite itself.

“Every little detail is either feeding the mood or destroying the mood.” I love that quote, from the above discussion on his techniques. Lynch is obsessed with the aesthetics of any scene.

But that scene may not be indicative of how perfect of a David Lynch movie that Mulholland Drive is. The way it lures you in with it’s seemingly straightforward plot of a amnesiac girl on the run meeting up with the good-natured wannabe starlet moving to LA, a world where the real meets with the bizarre fantasies of the real, combined with the slightly amateurish way that Lynch sometimes does his films combined scene to scene with some masterful bits of directing and editing. Maybe the “No Hay Banda”/Club Silencio scenes show all of this a little better…

…which uses the spanish language a cappella version of Roy Orbison’s “Crying” perfectly, and beautiful performed by Rebekah del Rio, to give the two characters, Betty (Naomi Watts) and Rita (Laura Elena Harring), something magnificent to take in. In a lot of ways, the whole film plays out here in this scene, as the two women, newly lovers, watch the ridiculous elements on the stage before them, but our overcome by sadness from an event that they’re not aware has ever taken place. They’re oblivous to the fact that they’re merely daydreams of their real selves, whose relationship has ended in a violent tragedy. Just as the song keeps playing long after the performer’s dead body has been dragged from the stage, some dreams stick around long after one has woken and are poisoned by the harsh southern California sunlight and turned into nightmares.

For all his weirdness, and all his attempts at capturing and being the sole conquerer of the American weird film zeitgeist, David Lynch has never been and probably never will be more perfect than he was in Mulholland Drive.

And there’s a reason that this movie, despite it’s weirdness, launched Naomi Watts onto a career that ultimately could be called merely so so. It’s not the “so so” of it that’s important, it’s the launching. It’s not totally shocking to me that she would be the common denominator in this post, having worked with Lynch, Cronenberg, and was in The Ring. But she’s perfect in this Mulholland Drive, at one moment sunny as the weather and bursting with bright eyed optimism and at other times, dark and torn apart, nothing but raw hurting nerves as she cries and masturbates. It reminds me of myself whenever I write one of these diatribes for you people.

That said, I have Inland Empire sitting around on my shelf, just waiting to be watched. Anyone care to join me? Or to hold my hand in an attempt to make it all way through Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me? It’d be much appreciated.

But for now, I leave you in peace, with a final thought from David Lynch himself, about movies and iphones:

Oldboy

The festival is beginning to take its toll on me, especially as I also have to work during these aft

The festival is beginning to take its toll on me, especially as I also have to work during these afternoons, so I only managed to fit in two films in my schedule. By shear chance, both of them were South Korean and both starred the always good Kang-ho Song.

Song is one of Korea’s biggest moviestars, but he also is a very competent and versatile actor, often adding a touch of humour in his roles. I first became aware of him in Swiri (from 1999) by Je-gyu Kang, who five years later made the good war film Brotherhood. After Swiri, Song did J.S.A. Joint Security Area, which was his first collaboration with Chan-wook Park. Park used Song in his next project, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, as well. Park went on to make the internationally acclaimed Oldboy, without Song this time. He gave him a cameo in Sympathy for Lady Vengeance before granting him the undisputed lead in Thirst, which is the first film I saw today.

Thirst is a gorgeously filmed vampire story. For the first hour it is really good, at times exceptionally so. There are scenes we haven’t seen before and the protagonist is definitely not your typical vampire. Song plays a devout catholic priest who becomes a vampire through a tainted blood transfusion after having briefly died as a test subject for an experimental vaccine. He soon realizes his predicament, and not feeling it is a sin, as he didn’t ask for this to happen to him, he considers it an illness and not inherently bad in any moral way. There is initially no big change in his personality and he makes sure that he doesn’t harm anyone in order to procure the necessary quantities of blood, tapping blood from coma victims at the local hospital who are not likely to miss a bottle or two of the red stuff.

Soon, however, he is introduced to Tae-joo, a young woman forced into servitude of her sickly husband and mother in law. The priest, soon to be ex-priest, and Tae-joo begin an erotic relationship which is very well represented in the film. The scenes of love making all seem natural and as a result comes off as truly erotic and not the silly wish fulfilment fantasies of countless Hollywood films. Unfortunately, it turns out that his love is a bit of a femme fatale who uses him for her own ends. From this point in, I felt the film became overlong, dwelling too much on its grantedly beautiful frames, but not advancing the plot in any surprising ways, or at all. I won’t spoil the film, so I’ll limit myself to saying that for me, at least, the film didn’t reach its potential. I saw where the film was heading and it didn’t make any meaningful detours from that direction. As a result, a short trip felt far too long. What made this second half of the film worth staying, was the stellar work of Ok-vin Kim, an actress I’d never heard of before. She really made the character of Tae-joo a full bodied creature, upping the menacing aspects of her arc in the film. I’ll recommend the film with caution, as it is very well made and looks fantastic, with some really breath taking scenes. Just be aware that the recommendation is not unconditional.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird also stars Kang-ho Song. In this film he plays almost an amalgamation of the two characters he has played in the films of my favourite Korean director, Joon-ho Bong. I assume anyone with an interest in Korean films has seen Memories of Murder, in which Song plays a policemen with a temper and some intellectual shortcomings. I personally found this even better than David Fincher’s Zodiac, being a very similar story. Song also played in the environmental monster film The Host, which was a bit of a hit internationally as well. Here he played a well meaning buffoon, possibly short of some marbles.

As The Good, the Bad, the Weird gives Song the chance to essay a character who seemingly has two personalities, he can really let loose with his two most typical screen personas. Song, of course, is the weird one of the title.

The film is directed by Ji-woon Kim, who among others has made the solid A Tale of Two Sisters and A Bittersweet Life. Kim is a very visually oriented director, often presenting tableaus which are easier to admire than really like, but in The Good, the Bad, the Weird, he uses his considerable talents to give us the purest entertainment this side of Indiana Jones (disregarding the fourth near-abomination). The title of the film makes the countless nods to Sergio Leone quite clear, but more than a Spaghetti Eastern, I felt this was an adventure film, an action film like they don’t make em anymore.

The plot is all a bit of nonsense, with a treasure map serving as a MacGuffin for countless inventive chases and spectacular fight scenes, not with kung-Fu, but guns, cannons and everything that can be fired from a steel tube. In between the action scenes, we get to know the characters just enough to care about them. There is also a sub-plot regarding how Korea has been stolen by the Japanese, and as a result the three protagonists are men with no country, all now making a life lived in the eternal present in a soon to be mythic Manchuria. This gives them the chance to reinvent themselves, something Song’s character has done most successfully, gladly accepting the role as a happy-go-lucky small time thief and adventurer. Again, I can’t say more, as it would spoil a plot point towards the end.

The plot, however is not the important thing here. The unbridled entertainment on display is all that counts. I laughed out loud many times during the film and too often during the action scenes, I found myself sitting with my mouth open for a longer time than is considered proper in polite society. The only thing that was a let down was the ending, which I felt was too abrupt and disappointing in its stock situation. I felt that it was unnecessary to emulate Leone to such a degree at this point. That particular scene can probably never be bettered anyway, so it was a bit of a suicide attempt for Kim to try to get away with it. Be sure, by the way, to watch some minutes into the credits, as some resolution can be found there. Heartily recommended, but not for those who feel that all art should be slow moving, reflective and involve the deeper meaning of life, come hell or high water.

10)Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan(2006)

9)The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford(2007)

8)Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring(2003)

7)Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

5)HERO (2002)/V for Vendetta(2006)

“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people” -V

4) Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence(2004)

3)The Diving Bell and the Butterfly(2007)

2)The Fountain((2006)

1)Oldboy(2003)

“Even though I’m no more than a monster – don’t I, too, have the right to live?”

Poor neglected blog.

That’s ok, not much of relevance has happened since Hugh Jackman stood for all of us who hate people who don’t turn off their mobile phones in a theatre. Thanks once more Wolverine.

Now for the real, and random, updates…

jordanmendenhall.com, a former home of this blog and my main site, has been updated. Now in a much bleaker grey tone. Hefty thanks to CSS-tricks for the inspiration and code.

PHP – currently trying to tackle this programming language; reading through the excellent manual and trying to learn through experience with WordPress and SimplePie. I would have some SimplePie sites done by now but it is being frakin’ annoying and not working how I’d like. More to learn I guess.

Restarted my search for work. If it doesn’t pan out by January, will more than likely be heading to Thailand to work for an NGO, finances be damned.

The best days are those in which new books arrive in the mail. Today I received The Infrastructural City, Fell Vol 1: Feral City, and To The Holy Shrines. Will probably be the first and last purchases for the year as my stack(s) are already overwhelming.

I don’t think the beef in my Mongolian beef from the local Chinese place actually comes from Mongolia.

Still posting at WhyWeWorry. My posts are here.

Thinking of doing my first NaNoWriMo. Ok, not as cool as running a marathon but I guess it’s a marathon of a different sort. Might be a bit of a spur to be disciplined for once.

Was in a car accident my first day off from my laymen home nursing duties putting my squarely back at home and car-less for the past three weeks. Fingers crossed, it will be back tomorrow. Just another sign that my time back home in Redneckville should be coming to an end.

Movies: Watched Fires On The Plain last night. A single Japanese soldier crawls across the shattered landscape of the Philippines in WWII witnessing gore, disease, and cannibalism. Excellent, to say the least. Carlito’s Way and Oldboy are the only other ones that stick out for me this month. Carlito’s Way of probably being the last great dePalma and Oldboy surprisingly fresh with a sick surprising ending. Also watched The Painted Veil, which was pretty decent, not great.

Craig Ferguson remains the King of Late Night, despite all the attention lavished on the others. Conan is struggling a bit in his time slot and I enjoyed Jimmy Fallon even more than Conan until I was turned onto Craig Ferguson. Conan is starting to get into Letterman mode where he has one monologue joke for the week and rolls with it. Ferguson has no ’standard’ monologue, or format for that matter. He has, I guess, what you call a cold opening, a break, then goes to a monologue, then to a sit-down, then to the interviews. He doesn’t keep them on a strict PR play-by-play that you can tell is rote (Conan is getting especially bad at this) and will let the interview meander wherever it leads. He also has authors, which I’ve never seen on a real late night show before. Letterman and Leno I could really care less about, especially Leno. The commercials for his man on the street stuff before his show premiered seemed at best condescending and mostly insulting.

The LA Cycling Map got a redesign. <del datetime="2009-10-22T21:04:34+00:00">The map is loading properly but Google has been acting weird the past two days so who knows. Will take a closer look after doing some more cover letters. </del> A cover letter done and problem figured out. Should work fine now.

Update: Found some great techdork and theory pieces at this area of the Adobe site called the Think Tank. Check it out.

That’s about it. Hopefully good news to come, either about work or life or getting away, soon.

1era entrega: “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002)
