Studies show that adults who experience chronic pain and chronic back pain may be at increased risk

Studies show that adults who experience chronic pain and chronic back pain may be at increased risk for falls which is a serious, oftentimes deadly problem for people of older age. Dismally, chronic pain and chronic back pain is a usual companion of people of older age.

From the Journal of the American Medical Association, a group of researchers reported on a new trial that followed more than 700 patients over the age 70 who were living in Boston. The patients, who had medical examination before they started in the clinical study, kept a record with dates and any pain they experienced and how it affected their daily lifestyle.

In general the new study last for around 18 months. After a year and a half, the team of researchers noticed that individuals who said they felt pain in two or more joints in one month were 50% more likely to fall in the following month than patients who did not report joint pain. Certainly, back pain was not associated with all injuries from falls. Basically, the added risk for patients with multiple joint pain persisted after the group of researchers collected data for various components such as a existing medical history of injury due to falls, use of drugs, any conditions, or any balance concerns.

Research studies show that the study’s findings mean chronic pain and chronic back pain should not be just dismissed all the time. Clearly, based on the study’s results that chronic pain and chronic back pain should be taken more seriously, especially in patients of older age.

Keep in mind that it may not be merely simple aches or pains; it might actually be a condition that places a adult at greater risk for falls, which may lead to hospitalization and presumably further injury. Moreover, if we can control chronic pain and chronic back pain, will individuals have fewer falls? Undoubtedly, if a individual has chronic pain and chronic back pain, they should discuss it health care professional to make sure the pain is controlled adequately and appropriately.

For this reason and many others, the president of the American Geriatrics Society said that the study should remind individuals that chronic pain and chronic back pain is normally an under-recognized and under-treated problem.

Thus, this study aids us to understand that pain in a patient’s daily lifestyle affects more than only them being hurt. Ultimately, the most important message is we should not ignore chronic pain and chronic back pain in older people.

Cheap gaming is something we all want, and with the current economy many people cant afford to buy all the new release’s.

So starting soon we will be running the Gaming For Less series where we will be looking at older xbox 360 games that can now be picked up for pennies.

Many people forget the pre-owned market due to complaints of second hand games not working, however these are actually very rare,it’s simply because the people that buy second hand games dont announce it every time they get a good disc.

Not only can you get newer releases for less money but you can pick up the older games for incredibly cheap prices.

Games such as Oblivion,Crackdown and Gears of War can be picked up for under £10 each.

Never forget the advantage of trading in your own games as well, this can get you alot of money off of you games, allowing you to get even more bargains for your money.

It’s not just older games that can be gotten for less, for example Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts can be picked up for around £15 and provides hours upon hours of entertainment (we will be running a review of this game soon) and yet it was just released in early 2009.

Mirrors Edge is also another game that can be picked up for pennies, and provides a good change from the standard shooters.

So what older games could I recommend?

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Crackdown

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

Gears of War

Far Cry 2

Mass Effect

Mirrors Edge

Battlefield: Bad Company

are just a few that you could pick up for incredibly low price’s.

So you’ve decided to enlist leadership-level older adult volunteers to extend your organization’s se

So you’ve decided to enlist leadership-level older adult volunteers to extend your organization’s services. Congratulations!

Now, a quick question: Is your organization ready for this?

Integrating volunteers into staff roles can be a challenge, so the National Council on Aging brought to its sold-out Webinar series a session called “Changing Organizational Culture: Getting Your Nonprofit Ready for Professional and Leadership Volunteers.”

In it, Phil McCallion of the Center for Excellence in Aging Services, School of Social Welfare, SUNY at Albany and Gajtana Simonovski, of the Community Service Society, Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, New York, New York, shared their experiences in integrating the two. Here’s what they had to say.

First, Simonovski debunked the myths of what staff think about high-skill volunteers.

Myth: They will take staff jobs.
Reality: Most are not looking for another job. But they can free staff to do more strategic planning.

Myth: It takes more time than it’s worth to manage and train them.
Reality: Sometimes training takes more time in the beginning, said Simonovski, “but really there’s a big payout at the end, more than you put in.”

Myth: They agency hop, not staying long in one position, and won’t commit to regular hours.
Reality: They want flexibility and variety in their assignments, but are willing to make a commitment.

Myth: They will criticize staff.
Reality: They want to share their expertise and knowledge and enable nonprofits to involve skilled professionals in their planning process. “Rather than be afraid of their expertise, welcome it,” she said.

Phil McCallion thinks of leadership-level volunteers as consultants. He suggested that to get buy-in, be explicit that you are not replacing staff. Instead, convey that they bring experience and can help staff. Simonovski said they held a meeting for staff in the beginning to alleviate fears, and made the business case as to why volunteers would help staff do their jobs. McCallion also recommended doing and sharing a cost-benefits analysis. “If we start to see what the benefit is, absolutely we’ll see more buy-in.”

Taking care of basic logistics is important, too, such as giving them office space, a desk, phone, mailbox, even business cards. Asking volunteers to share desks and computers concurrently rarely works, said McCallion. For the Center for Excellence in Aging Services project, the office space usually reserved for volunteers and interns was reorganized to meet these volunteers’ specific needs. Creating the sense that volunteers had their own space and equipment was an important part of engaging people and making them feel committed, he said. And it signaled to everyone that the volunteers are making an important contribution.

Treating volunteers as staff in other ways is helpful as well, said Simonovski. For example, involve them in regular program planning meetings so that they become part of the team. Share project evaluation reporting with them so that they can see how the program is doing, and how they are doing. Offer professional development training. Correspond regularly through e-mail and phone calls and speak frankly with them, encouraging them to come up with solutions to project challenges.

The key, said McCallion, is building a sense of team, a sense of communication, and a sense that everyone’s opinion is valued.

This shift in thinking changes the traditional relationship between volunteers and staff. Whereas previously the roles were of boss and staff, now it’s a lateral or parallel approach that provides equality, said Simonovski. Instead of supervision, it’s about support. “In many cases, these volunteers have more experience than we do,” she said. As a result, staff members try not to squelch the volunteers’ creativity and experience.

And a leadership-level volunteer is less likely to hold a single position indefinitely. Short-term assignments and flexible long-term assignments are the new way. This change away from a single track makes sense, because “most of our organizations would never permit that for staff,” said McCallion. Volunteers feel invisible within organizations when playing that one role. A parallel approach is a big departure from tradition, and one that volunteers welcome, he said.

These factors feed into culture change, McCallion said.

An organization has to be open to fully involving volunteers to change its culture, he said. In fact, an openness to change is one of the most critical elements of a successful project with leadership volunteers. How else can you achieve change? Commit to using those volunteers to improve the organization. Prepare staff for culture change, ensure that management is open to feedback, and keep communication open.

How might you know when that transformation has taken place? Said McCallion, when there is no difference in terms of how people are seen in the hall.

What about in your organization? How have you brought together volunteers and staff? And how do you know when culture change has happened?

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the availability of $27 million dollars nationwide to older individuals with chronic conditions. The money, made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will work to help these individuals improve their health and reduce their use of costly medical care. Thus far, the Recovery Act has provided up to $650 million dollars to HHS for the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative launched earlier this fall to promote evidence-based prevention strategies in communities and states across the country.

The HHS press release notes that, “Research has shown that prevention programs can improve the quality of life for older individuals, including frail seniors with multiple chronic conditions, and also reduce health care costs. The Recovery Act funds will put the results of HHS’ research investments into practice at more than 1,200 community-based sites across the country — reaching tens of thousands of older Americans and their families.”

“Too many seniors do not receive the recommended preventive and primary care they need,” said Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Howard K. Koh. “This program will strengthen the health care that our seniors need and deserve by coordinating and integrating care in the community.”

The story is here: http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/12/woman_98_charge.html

It is a story of a harsh way to die, especially when your a healthy 100 year old woman. What’s eve more spaced out about this story is her killer was 98 years old. She apparently got annoyed with her 100 year old roommate for “taking over the room” they shared in a Massachusets nursing home. So, the 98 year old woman decided to end her roommate’s life the way they do it on tv in a hospital: hold a pillow down on the victim’s face until they stop moving.

She was indicted today, though the prosecutor doesn’t really see this case going all the way to or through a trial.

I am sitting in the middle between both sides of this coin. Why try her? She’s 98 and in a nursing home! Are you going to be taking away her freedoms? The nursing home has already done that. Once you’re in a nursing home, you’re their property.

On the other hand…

Why let her go? Why not show that, even though she was indicted for second-degree murder, she should just be set free because she’salmost the age of Moses. She developed the mens rea to commit the crime. Doesn’t that count

All in all, however, I can see why this would be gently swept under the rug and we never hear about it again, except maybe when the 98 year old woman dies and she’s remembered for killing her roommate on a late night talk show. Talk about going out with a bang…

Two years ago I made the decision to venture to the Motherland, and before I left I had to have a series of medical check-ups and vaccinations to ensure that I was disease free(it was my personal decision to ensure my health before traveling, it was not required for my trip) before traveling and also to protect me from catching germs from an unfamiliar environment. So when I went to the doctor she asked me 21 questions as to why I was traveling alone to Africa. I wanted to tell her it was none of her dang business but I refrained and dismissed her questions as concern considering she was my doctor and we had history together. Next I went to the local traveler’s health bureau to get a series of vaccinations for everything from tetanus to yellow fever(required by the CDC). While I was there the nurse made time for a question and answer counseling session where I asked her numerous questions about West Africa. When her turn came to question me she kept stressing that I should not engage in any sexual acts with the natives and I assured her that I was not going there for sex numerous times during our chat but nevertheless she continued to stress the “no sex” factor, and I left the office confused and a bit offended that she kept stressing me over the sex issue. However, a week ago I was surfing the net and I found an article on Kenyan Sex Tours. The article featured two women from England, Amanda who is in her 50’s and Agatha who is 64. These women voyaged to Africa in hopes of rekindling their non-existent sex lives. Amanda and Agatha stayed in Africa on holiday for about 1 month sexing up young black studs in their 20’s and treating them to fleeting moments of the “good life.” In exchange for sex they gave the studs clothes, shoes, money and stays in expensive hotels. Now to me this stinks of male prostitution and exploitation. This is a serious problem because in a nation where the AIDS/ HIV rate has a prevalence of 7% these pleasure seekers often times shun the use of condoms and most of these young men boast of sleeping with 100 women or more. This is sad and ignorant! An even sadder thing is that many of these young men see having sex with foreign women as a ticket to salvation.Another dark side to this is that the precedence for this behavior was set by wealthy men who travel to Africa to have sex with young girls and boys ranging in ages from 12-18 in exchange for money. Alot of these men try to “catch them while they are young” and submit these children to horrendous sex acts. Even more outraging is that these men go there and set up “orphanages” for these children only as a smoke screen for their perverted behavior. This is so sad and now when I see people going to Africa to start schools I can’t help but wonder what their intentions are.But as for Amanda and Agatha I can’t help but ask myself, “Is this what the feminist movement was all about?” “Is this why women wanted equal rights, so that we could engage in the same perverted activities as some of our male counterparts?”
Peace Y’all

With this being said…..I’m gonna make my 40’s the decade to remember. Whatever happens, happens. At the end of my life…..I wanna go out with a bang…..not a whimper!

When you get older sometimes you forget your age! That’s a good thing if you want to remain young at heart!

I was driving down one of the highways the other day and finally noticed the speed limit! Was surprised to see that it said only 55mph. Most of the freeways around here is 75 mph.

What really hit me was that when I got to thinking about the speed, I also thought by gum that’s how old I am. Kind of like they say”Old as Dirt”. I don’t consider myself old, but guess you wake up one day and there it is.

I was thinking of those letters today, you know in the letter world, mph…mph
that stands for My Poor Hair. Yes, at my young age my hair alot of mornings looks like Phyllis Dillars hair. You can only say you get what you get. I’ll be Mrs. Santa Claus or Ms.Santa Claus come 21 more days but who’s counting! I will probably wake up and everyone of those hairs on my head will have arrived in the exact parking space they should be!
