Impecable.

Monivuotinen pikku kiinalaiseni tuli kolmeksi.

The older I get, the more I appreciate Thanksgiving. Maybe it’s because it is uniquely American. Yes, I know Canada has a Thanksgiving Day, too, but what comes to mind when you think of Thanksgiving? That’s right. Pilgrims. And not Pilgrims with that signature lilt in the voice, ending sentences in “Eh?” But what I also enjoy is this holiday’s Christian roots, and the irony of lefties enjoying the holiday without serious consideration to what this holiday is really about. A time of reflection and giving thanks to God for the extraordinary providence he has bestowed upon us.What’s that you say? Only a rube would express thanks to God? Only a superstitious idiot would do such a thing? Yeah. Those Founding Fathers were real idiots, weren’t they? Case in point? Noted foolish Christianist and tyrant, George Washington:

<

A Proclamation

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;– for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;– for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;– and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;– to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wife, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.
(signed) G. Washington

Why, the unmitigated gall! A sitting U.S. President having the nerve to invoke God in his official capacity as President! Didn’t he know that The Constitution contains a “wall of separation between church and state”? Actually, no. He didn’t, because the Constitution contains no such thing. And the private letter of Thomas Jefferson’s from which this false doctrine was later transplanted into the Constitution by the Court in the twentieth century wasn’t yet written. Jefferson, that noted author of this fabled Constitutional premise , was not even in the country at the time the Constitution was written, as he was serving as the nation’s Minister to France.

This is a time of year for reflection and giving thanks. I’m thankful for my family, both the one I was born with, and the one I chose.

I’m thankful for the Providence God has bestowed in my life, and the Providence that he has bestowed on our nation.

I’m thankful for second chances, and the fact that we can still abandon the insanity that a reckless minority and our elected officials are inexplicably wedded to, and determined to force us into.

And yes, I will be taking some time over this Holiday on my knees and in audience with the very same Creator that the Father of our country sought in times of adversity and times of plenty. Why don’t you join me?

Eu ascult jazz. Funky.Metale grele. Blues. Oldies. Multa chitara. Bass (uuh, so sexy)!

One of the things I enjoy most about digging into music history is the way the process sometimes leads me into unexplored territory. The latest example occurred while I was putting together a recent piece about pop star Mel Carter and ran across another singer, a mysterious lady who’d also had a best-selling record of Mel’s big hit, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” but a dozen years earlier.

At that time the singer was known as Karen Chandler, but she had performed earlier in her career as Eve Young, and was actually born Eva Nadauld. Although her birth date is unknown, she was a native of Idaho who attended Brigham Young University, which might have helped her pick her first stage name. In any case, by the time she made her first documented professional appearance — singing with Benny Goodman’s band on a 1946 radio show — Miss Nadauld was calling herself Eve Young.

Over the next several years Eve Young continued to make a name for herself, first by making more appearances with Goodman and later by working her way into early TV, gaining spots on variety shows like Musical Merry-Go-Round. She also managed to land a recording contract, which led to several successful records, among them “For You, for Me, for Evermore,” and “Cuanto la Gusta.” At some point along the way she’d also married arranger Jack Pleis, although the date is uncertain.

By 1950, Eve Young’s recording contract had expired and she was beginning to cool off a little, but she still continued to show up in key spots from time to time. One of her best was a spotlighted turn on TV’s Martin and Lewis Colgate Comedy Hour. (You can see her in the video below if you wait out Jerry’s long introduction).

In 1952 Eve Young decided to completely reinvent herself. She lightened her hair, changed her name to Karen Chandler, and managed to land a new recording contract. Her debut recording for Coral Records, “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me,” rose up the charts into the Top Ten and became her biggest seller. It was followed by other solid successes like “Goodbye Charlie, Goodbye,” and “Why?”, but overall her record sales began to slip.

Trying something a little different, in 1956 she teamed up with country singer Jimmy Wakely on “Tonight You Belong to Me,” and the record did well but things pretty much wound down after that. Although she did attempt a brief comeback a few years later, by the late 1960s her career was over and she had disappeared from view.

A streaming algorithm for the classic Dyck language

Claire Mathieu, previously Claire Kenyon, is an expert in the design and analysis of algorithms, which should be no surprise since she worked as a graduate student with two of the world’s best—Philippe Flajolet and Jeffrey Vitter. Claire has done and continues to do some very pretty work on all aspects of algorithms.

Today I plan to talk about a recent paper of Frédéric Magniez, Claire Mathieu, and Ashwin Nayak on streaming algorithms, and how it relates to work that was in vogue years ago.

I recall one day at Princeton when Bob Sedgewick and I had, what we thought, was a great idea. At the time we were working on a front end to TeX, which we called “notech.”

Notech was a preprocessor to TeX that extended some of the ideas that Don Knuth put into TeX: except we carried them to the extreme. Let me explain. Before TeX there were other languages that were typesetting languages. One was called Troff, and was developed at Bell Labs as part of the UNIX project. Troff was not bad—for example, many textbooks were written with it—but it had serious limitations. My first typeset paper was done with it, but Troff’s limits helped drive Knuth to invent TeX.

One of the features of Troff that I hated was that paragraphs were separated from each other by not a blank line as in TeX, but by the symbols .PP. This made the raw text very hard to read, in my opinion. In Troff this is how I would have written this paragraph:

.PP
One of the limits of Troff that I hated was that paragraphs were separated from each other by not a blank line as in TeX, but by the symbols
.ft I
.PP.
.ft R
This made the raw text very hard to read, in my opinion. In Troff this is how I would have written this paragraph:

I will stop here—the danger of recursion scares me.

I loved that TeX used the obvious rule that a blank line meant a new paragraph—what else could it mean? Bob and I worked out a series of similar rules each of the form:

if you typed something in a “reasonable way,” notech would try, via its rules, to guess what you meant, and typeset the material appropriately.

Notech was a pretty good guesser, and for years I used it as my own front-end to TeX. A notech file was mostly plain text—thus the name—except for math formulas. We could never figure out anything that was better than what Knuth invented for math formulas. Although we did use matching and as math delimiters, we left math basically alone. Here is a small part of a paper I wrote in notech:

A key lemma for the lower bound is the following:

Main Lemma: There exists a family of bounded degree directed acyclic graphs {G_n} on {n} vertices and an {\epsilon > 0} so that {G_n} has no {\epsilon n}-segregator with cardinality less than {\epsilon n}.

You might ask, what does this have to do with Claire? She is French and is of course fluent in both English and French. One day at a Princeton tea, Bob and I asked Claire a question: are there two words in French that have the same letters, but have different accents? If there were none, or if such words were rare, then we could program notech to automatically add accents to French words. This seemed to us to be a cool possibility, since accents were a pain to do in notech or TeX.

Her initial response was favorable. She said that she could not, immediately, think of any French words with the same letters, that had different accents. Bob and I were excited, and we explained to her that this would allow us to write a program that would supply the missing accents, since they were redundant.

Redundant did not go over well. Claire walked off and after a few minutes returned with a long list of words that changed with different accents. Our plan was ruined, and she had defended the French language. It would have been a great feature, in my opinion, if accents could be automatically added to a word. I still struggle to get them right—especially on names. Oh well.

Let’s turn to discuss her neat paper on streaming and Dyck Languages, and leave accents behind.

Streaming for Dyck Languages

Frédéric Magniez, Claire Mathieu, and Ashwin Nayak have written a pretty paper titled Recognizing well-parenthesized expressions in the streaming model.

The language is the language of all properly nested parenthesis expressions over two different types of paired parenthesis.

The parentheses ( and ) must be paired, and the parentheses [ and ] must be paired. Thus,

is in the language and

is not. More precisely, the empty string is in the Dyck language; and if is in the language, then so is and . Yes, there is a language , which has three types of paired parenthesis, and has four, and so on. A simple insight is that is already the “general case” for the streaming problem.

They prove:

Theorem: There is a one-pass randomized streaming algorithm for with space and time . If the stream belongs to then the algorithm accepts it with probability ; otherwise it rejects it with probability at least where is a constant.

They also prove a lower bound that almost matches their algorithm’s space bound. I really like their result. First, it uses a non-trivial method to manage a potentially large stack, which, I believe, could be used in other streaming algorithms. Second, their result is related to an old language theory result that I will discuss in the next section. I like the connection between the current hot topic of streaming and an old topic.

Here is a short overview of how they prove their theorem. As usual please look at their paper for the full proof.

It may help to explain the naïve—note the accent—algorithm for determining whether or not a string is in . The algorithm uses a pushdown, which is initially empty. I will abuse the definitions a bit and call the pushdown a stack: recall a stack, in language theory, allows more operations that just push and pop.

The algorithm processes each input symbol in turn; thus, there are four cases based on the current input symbol:

The input is (. In this case just push the symbol onto the stack.

The input is [. In this case also just push the symbol onto the stack.

The input is ). In this case check that the top most symbol is a matching (. If it is not, then reject; otherwise, pop off the top of the stack.

The input is ]. In this case check that the top most symbol is a matching [. If it is not, then reject; otherwise, pop off the top of the stack.

When there is no more input, the algorithm accepts if and only if the stack is empty. It is not hard to see that this algorithm works correctly with only one pass over the input. Note, the string

<img src='http://l.wordpress.com/latex.php?latex=%5Cdisplaystyle+%5B%5C%2C%28%5C%2C%5D%5C%2C%29%26%2338%3Bfg%3D000000&bg=ffffff&fg=000000&s=0' alt='\displaystyle [\,(\,]\,)&fg=000000′ title=’\displaystyle [\,(\,]\,)&fg=000000′ class=’latex’ />

will be rejected because at the third input symbol the stack will be

and the input is . Since the top does not pair off with the input, rule (4) forces the algorithm to reject.

Their clever insight is that it is possible to simulate the stack with much less space, than used by the naïve algorithm. Note, the stack can get as large as order in size for a string that is in the Dyck language: just have an input that starts with many ( and [ symbols.

The key idea is that the contents of the stack can be hashed, and in this manner the space requirements can be reduced from order to almost . The hashing is not completely straightforward---they need to carefully look at the types of motions of the stack. They must analyze how the stack can move up and down during the operation of the naïve algorithm. See their paper for the details.

The Connection to Language Theory

The Dyck language, named for Walther von Dyck, is fundamental to classic language theory. It is a special type of context-free language, called linear, but it is ``universal'' in a sense made precise by the beautiful Chomsky-Schützenberger Theorem:

The theorem is, of course, due to Noam Chomsky and Marcel-Paul Schützenberger.

This connection raises some interesting questions between their new streaming result and classic language theory. Can they use their method, for example, to give a streaming bound on all context-free languages?

I will end this discussion by pointing out that I have already discussed a close relative to the Dyck language. Consider the free group on letters. Given a word from the free group, some words, like would trivially equal . Let us call the language defined by such words . is like except that parentheses can cancel in either order: for example,

is now allowed. Sometimes the language is called, for obvious reasons, the two-sided Dyck language.

Zeke Zalcstein and I showed years ago that the following is true:

Theorem: There is an one-pass randomized streaming algorithm for the language with space and time . If the stream belongs to the free group then the algorithm accepts it with probability ; otherwise it rejects it with probability at least where is a constant.

Well not exactly. As Frédéric Magniez, Claire Mathieu, and Ashwin Nayak generously point out, we proved a theorem that is equivalent to this, but we proved our theorem before there was a even a streaming model. I discussed our result and its strange history here.

Open Problems

Is their upper bound tight? More fun might be to try and see what is the streaming complexity of other languages. In particular, what happens for all context-free languages? What about linear ones?

Why is the Dyck language so much harder in the streaming model than the free group, the two-sided Dyck language?

Also their stack idea is quite ingenious---can similar ideas be used in other algorithms?

[Some minor updates.]

The most powerful feelings show themselves just for a few moments and they still leave a trace on us

The most powerful feelings show themselves just for a few moments and they still leave a trace on us. We do not share these powerful emotions with anyone else, not even with our friends and family. They are secrets deeply carved in the depths of our souls and minds. When they come out, we cannot predict. They are brought by a momentary thought, a flashing image of the past or the present, a phrase, a word, a gesture, a look in someone’s eyes. They feed on our souls and they creep around our minds, making us do hideous or wonderful things. We cannot escape from them when they appear, and we do not want to.

They do not define us, they are alien from our personality, they cannot be identified by someone else as a part of us. We love them, because they are different from who and what we are, they are something which was born within us, but which lies a few thousand light years away from us. We love it because it brings something new to us, or because we simply do not fully understand why is it that we feel in such a manner. We also love it because of such intensity there is no other feeling. In that very instant we feel something of incredible power, something that poisons our mind, it strikes it into an abyss of thought and possibilities and mars it horribly and irreparably. We are hypnotized by it, we transcend into another world of feeling, we succumb to our deepest wishes and we feel the embrace of freedom. We are aware of the consequences brought by acting based on such an emotion; but we do not listen to reason. The sheer power of the feeling overwhelms us. After they disappear and we think about it, we cannot believe what has transpired, what was born, what has crept out of our subconscious thoughts.

Sometimes they haunt us for a very long time by leaving their mark on us. Thus, we come back again and again to them, to try and understand why we felt that way when we did. We will never comprehend it, simply because all there is to understand about them lies in the very moment when we feel them. And in that moment, nothing else matters but that very emotion, that single drop that poisons the mind.

We look upon the things that happen in our lives, trying to discern what’s what and to comprehend as much as we can. When our minds are exposed to something that we cannot understand or something that is different from our own sense of perception, a feeling of jealousy appears. We are jealous of the fact that there is something that we cannot comprehend, or simply because it is not shaped as we would shape it. So we try to reach it, to grasp it and to model it in our own image. If we cannot, we destroy it, or we cast it out of our lives.

But what drives this jealousy that invades our little minds? Is it our nature to aspire to something greater than ourselves, to transcend into the point of our origin and to complete the circle that is our existence, thus reaching a point of absolute happiness by understanding it? Or is it the desire to complete ourselves, to transcend to that same point but not take part of it, but to observe it and then become it? Do we become one with God? Do we stab him in the back and take his place?

Whatever the path we take, we like to believe that we become closer to this point by becoming judges and painters of our worlds. We impersonate the divine role poorly, as when we recreate and remodel our lives, we cause pain and destruction in our path, to the ones that are part of our lives and to ourselves. We are blinded by the bright lights we cast, thus we do not see the black abyss that stretches underneath us. This is our paradoxical existence. We ascend to something greater, and at the same time we act as if we were already there.

Recently, I was invited to take part in a radio programme, shortly to be broadcast, concerned with everyday life. In fact, a week’s diary of events.
I do keep a diary of sorts. Just things quickly jotted down to help me remember what we have done and when, plus unusual happenings and important events — that sort of thing. This ‘diary’ is similar but also includes my thoughts and feelings — putting flesh to otherwise boring details?
The word count was quite restricting but good as it cut down on waffle and made me concentrate my mind on the essentials. A good exercise all round.
At the end of the week, I had before me a brief look at my life as I live it now. One of the things that will be evident to some people is that I am greatly blessed. Although others may think I have a rather boring life because I am not, and never have been, part of a ‘jet set’. I enjoy the simple things of life. One of those things is having my hubby read to me each day. A pleasure that unites us by sharing together in ‘other worlds’ where mystery and intrigue prevail. Normally we sit within a bay window, close to the garden, so we can have the benefit of the beauty around us. Even the early morning sky, with its mixture of blues, greys and brilliant early morning golden sun, has a wonderful magic — enough sometimes to produce a tear of sheer joy. Such simple things…
But if that was all I had to write about it would seem a dull account. I was also completing my new book, but more than that, we had a medical emergency that interrupted our lives for five days. When we might have been watching Casualty on the TV on the Saturday night, we were sitting in Furness General’s A&E.

For those interested in my new edition of When Phones Were Immobile and Lived in Red Boxes – four more chapters and five more pictures — taking the reader to 1980, it is at the printers and will be on sale in two weeks time. The new edition includes our move up to the Furness area — a step backwards in time?

Although there were many exceptions, the majority of the groups that specialized in the type of close-harmony singing known as doo-wop fell into two categories. The earliest was the R&B-inspired music that mostly came out of the black urban environment, but close on its heels was the sound of the Italian-American groups, mostly originating in the big Eastern cities. Randy and the Rainbows was just such a group, and their hit “Denise” is still one of the most familiar songs from the era.

Randy and the Rainbows was a quintet that originated in the Queens section of New York, and was formed by two sets of brothers joined by another singing pal. By the early Sixties brothers Frank and Dominick “Randy” Safuto had already bounced around the New York music scene for a while, as had Mike and Sal Zero. When the four got together and added Ken Arcipowski to the mix, they began to call themselves Randy and the Rainbows, and it wasn’t long before they were able to make it into a recording studio.

In 1963 they recorded a song written by Neil Levenson, one that was inspired by a friend of his (who actually spelled her name Denice) and that would later become “Denis,” a minor hit for Blondie. But as “Denise,” performed by Randy and the Rainbows, the song would have its biggest success, becoming a Top Ten hit.

Although the group would continue to record after their big hit, and would sell some records with the similar-sounding “Why Do Kids Grow Up” (video below), Randy and The Rainbows would never reach the level of their one big song. But through the years the band has come together a number of times and in various configurations, and its members have had some success on the Oldies circuit. Additionally, both Randy Safuto and Mike Zero maintain websites dedicated to their group and its glory days.
