Did you know McDonalds was going to become, or Microsoft was going to become, or QVC was going to become the household names they did? How could you have known they were destined to be staples of the American economy? Everyone has hind sight but few have foresight. If only I had a way or someone to direct me on how to identify a unique growth business poised to dominate a mass market.

Apple keeps not saying anything but leeks keep bubbling to the surface regarding a possible tablet PC in the next year. Now there’s word that there might be an option for an OLED screen along with the less expensive LED versions. As I’ve said before, while pushing e-literature with one hand while slapping the very unversatile e-readers with the others, I like the idea of being able to download/purchuse digital books but I don’t see a reason why it can’t be done with a fully functional computer. Leave it to Apple to fill the void.

Considering that the majority of the praise for Amazon’s Kindle device has been for its screen and how closely it resembles the look of actual paper, I have to think that has played into Apple’s apparent courting of an OLED version of its much rumored tablet PC. Personally, a reported cost of $2,200 turns me off entirely but I have a feeling that I wouldn’t exactly be Apple’s target audience for such a product. But a nice multi-functional tablet PC for $500? I’m in. Even if I don’t download the latest STephen King novel to it, I’d be happy with something that I could use either as a notepad or (hopefully) hook a keyboard up to and use as a regular computer. I’m very much of the word processor/internet box computer buyer segment of society – video/photo/music editing has never been a hobby of mine – so a lack of processor power isn’t a big deal to me. Also wouldn’t mind the ability to hook the tablet up to my television or a regular computer monitor if the screen proves to be too small to use as a monitor in and of itself.

Also of note from the article, Conde Nast is said to be preparing a host of magazines under its publishing umbrella for download to tablet PCs. for those who don’t want to follow the link, among Conde Nast’s publications are Vanity Fair, Wired, Vogue, GQ, W and The New Yorker.

The mythical device (subscription required) has been delayed from early 2010 to the second half of next year, and there will an OLED model. Seriously.

According to anonymous sources inside that the electronics supply chain, Apple (s aapl) changed the launch from March—as opposed to January—to “switch some components” and to add a model with a 9.7″ OLED screen. The OLED model will be manufactured with a display from LG Electronics, as part of a $500 million dollar contract with Apple. That model would be in addition to an LCD tablet with a 10.6″ display.

If making two tablets with different size screens seems a curious decision, the price of the OLED tablet is extreme. According to DigiTimes, a 9.7″ OLED display would cost about $500, and display price is typically a third of total cost, so $1,500 would be the price to manufacture the tablet. Even accounting for cost reductions by next year, the retail price could be as high as $2,000.

That’s probably about right (the price, not the rumor). The Sony XEL-1 TV has an 11″ OLED screen and retails for $2,500, but can be found for as “little” as $1,800. However, even with a subsidy from a wireless provider, there is no way Apple is going to recreate the Cube failure in two-dimensions by selling a tablet in the range of $2,000. Look for an LCD tablet for around $800 early next year.

Forget LCDs. The future is now, with OLED technology making cel phones, computer monitors, and television screens paper thin. OLED, or Organic LED is just on the horizon and will be available soon to tech savvy consumers looking for the next big thing!

OLEDs display deep black levels, draw less power, and can be much thinner and lighter than an typical LCD display. In addition, at 1,000,000:1 (yes a million to one), OLED displays have a much higher contrast ratio than traditional “dumb old fashioned” LCD monitors.

Initially the prices will be high but as with everything technological, prices will fall as consumer demand increases. Look for OLED technology to hit shelves in full force in 2010-2011. I just love this crap!

It’s official: New TVs sold in California will be more energy efficient in coming years. The hotly debated state energy efficiency standards for televisions — the first of their kind in the nation — have just been approved by the California Energy Commission (hat tip our friends at sister site NewTeeVee). The standards say that new TVs sold in 2011 (58 inches and smaller) need to reduce energy consumption by an average of 33 percent by 2011 and 49 percent by 2013.

Many TV makers have opposed the rules, while the state’s utilities support it. Groups like the Consumer Electronics Association say that the efficiency standards will result in higher prices of TVs in California, closings of stores that sell TVs in California (because those customers will go online or out of state to buy TVs), and unhappy customers who won’t be able to find certain popular TV models in California because they won’t be economic to produce there. The CEA says that the industry has been getting more energy efficient on its own and doesn’t need regulation, which will lead to “decreased industry competition and less innovation.”

But as Amy Westervelt pointed out over on Solve Climate earlier this week, the ruling could lead to a boost in sales in the state for manufacturers that specialize in energy-efficient screens, using LCDs backlit with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and next generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED). Consumer electronics giants from Sony to LG to Samsung are working on OLED TVs and the technology is supposed to be more widely deployed by 2012 — just in time to meet Cali’s new green TV rule.

Thinking maybe you can’t live another day without finally breaking down and purchasing a penscanner? We can sympathize. There are plenty on the market, but the newly hatched DocuPen X Series is mildly more interesting than most out there. They’ve managed to cram 64MB of memory, Bluetooth, a tiny OLED screen and a lithium ion battery all in that tiny package, and if you’re the sunflower seed-eating, alien-hunting type, you probably want one of these for scanning your files at up to 600 dots per inch. DocuPen’s teensy X Series scanners start at $370.

Lately, I’ve really wanted to check out the Zune HD. It is a beautifully designed portable media player with a webkit-based Internet browser. It’s OLED display is said to be gorgeous, and this sucker packs an Nvidia Tegra chip which means silky smooth HD video playback without any lag. The size looks almost perfect, being just slightly slimmer than the iPod touch.

The user interface is very artsy and greatly improved compared to previous Zunes. Critics have praised the Zune HD as an evolution of the device which is finally coming into into its own. Finally a device that is on par with Apple’s iPod touch, and could give it a run for its money if it gains enough traction. The Zune HD needs apps and it needs them fast if it wants to rumble with the iPod touch.

I’ve hit several Best Buys and have not been able to even see the device in person. Haven’t had time to check out J and R or some other places. The more great things I hear about it, the more I want to hold it in my hands.

Here is another reason to pick the Zune HD up. It is one hell of a scratch proof gadget. Check out how it fairs under a pen, knife, key, and other sharp objects.
