I need to stop posting places of caloric intake! Ha. But the Black Olive is a recent contributor to my constant overindulgence! This Mediterranean inspired Italian menu is delightful. 21.11.09 Ricordavo di avere già scritto del saltarello, di Farfa (vedere sotto) e di Caldarola, ma ci saranno anche una certa Serrapetrona, Montelupone, la riserva naturale della cosiddetta Abbadia di Fiastra e Loro Piceno. Ma di cosa sto parlando? Della provincia di Macerata e del Lazio, protagoniste della nuova puntata di Sereno variabile stasera, sabato ventuno novembre, su Raidue intorno alle cinque e mezza.

Avrei, in aggiunta, qualche domanda per voi, cari marchigiani, come, ad esempio, «Cos’è la vernaccia?»,  cosa siano i pistacoppi e come sono i percorsi sotterranei di Montelupone o il fantasma del castello di Caldarola. Inoltre, ci sono cavalli in tutta Italia, dal sanfratellano a quello di Fiastra…

Infine, il sito dell’abbazia di Farfa ed un riferimento alla raccolta delle olive ed alla produzione dell’olio, senza dimenticara che una collaboratrice del programma, Monica Rubele, sarà in provincia di Benevento. Da Farfa anche un agriturismo, la cosiddetta Valle del sapere e la lavorazione dei tessuti al telaio.

05.11.09 Mondello Mondello. La spiaggia dei palermitani una delle protagoniste di una puntata e di un servizio – che forse non è il massimo – di Sì viaggiare di Raidue. Fra gli altri temi la raccolta delle olive in Umbria; la riserva naturale di Farfa, nel Lazio; la Sila, il Cai ed il lupo; il Kenya con la cosiddetta Valle del diavolo ed il tartufo di Acqualagna (nelle Marche?).

Il programma di viaggi torna anche questa settimana sabato sette novembre dopo l’una e un quarto di notte con la redazione costituita da un certo Carlo Pilieci e dalla conduttrice Silvia Vaccarezza. E poi… forse ve lo scrivo dopo. Sappiate anche che potete votare la vostra meta turistica preferita più sotto (e per questo blog) e che su Mondello c’è anche  qualcos’altro più in là.

Qualche idea sui prezzi degli agriturismi, dei bed and breakfast e dei residence al Centronord? So che in un b&b della provincia di Piacenza si pagano da cinquanta a settanta euro. Un residence, sempre nella stessa provincia, costa da trecento euro a settimana per i bilocali (angolo cottura e servizi, da due a quattro letti) a quattrocentocinquanta a settimana per i trilocali (angolo cottura, doppi servizi e da due a sei letti).

16.11.08 Finisce oggi – 16 novembre 2008 – dopo le 15 l’Agri&Tour di Arezzo, un salone dell’agriturismo a cui partecipa anche la Regione siciliana. Alle 10 un incontro di confronto sulle realtà di Enna ed Arezzo ed un workshop su rete internet e settore. Successivamente si parlerà alle 11 di asini e mezz’ora dopo di competitività per continuare quindi – quasi in conclusione – nel pomeriggio. Il salone si tiene nel locale Centro affari e convegni della città aretina.

Non so, peraltro, molto sulle varietà di olive Canino («cultivar Caninese»), Pendolino, Moraiolo e Frantoio e quale olio utilizzare con verdure, minestre, pinzimonio, bruschette, piatti di pesce e verdure e carni alla griglia. Da specialisti, peraltro, il «percolamento da Sinolea».

The Olive Mill In Ossaia, Tuscany

This week we have been Harvesting Olives at Casa degli Ulivi, a beautiful Farmhouse On The Tuscany Umbria border. This morning we took our first batch of olives to the mill in the village of Ossaia, just over the border into Tuscany and below the town of Cortona. With 96kg of olives we didn’t have enough to process our own batch so we won’t end up with oil from our own olives, however, since this is perfect olive growing territory, our oil should be high quality.

This was my first visit to an oil mill in action but the process was quite simple; we unloaded the olives into a large crate and a trolley moved them onto a weighing platform.

As we were getting oil from the general mix we were given a receipt and told to come back in a couple of days to collect it.

The olives are crushed with giant hammers and the resulting oil and water mix is centrifuged to separate the two liquids. The remaining paste is taken off and treated with a solvent to extract any remaining oil, this is the cheaper oil called simply “olive oil” rather than “virgin” or “extra virgin”, our oil will be high quality extra virgin.

Virgin and extra virgin olive oil are the only oils to be mechanically extracted, “virgin” has an acidity of greater than 1% whereas “extra virgin” is less than 1%. The best extra virgin oils have an acidity of 0.01%, oils from small scale producers in Tuscany and Umbria have some of the lowest acidity in the world.

Over the next few days we hope to harvest a bigger batch of olives and actually get our own olive oil!

FDR’s Martini

This seemed like an appropriate cocktail after my Martin Sheen/West Wing analogy of the other day, except with a real President this time. I confess, prior to looking up how FDR and Teddy were related, I had no idea that Eleanor and Franklin were already both Roosevelts prior to marrying (they were, apparently, fifth cousins).  Teddy was actually Eleanor’s uncle.  I have absolutely no idea what that makes him to FDR.  Makes me think of the dialogue between Dark Helmet and Lone Starr in “Spaceballs”:

Lone Starr:  What does that make us?
Dark Helmet:  Absolutely nothing!  Which is what you are about to become.

In The Martini Book, there is a quote above this recipe, which reads:  “FDR was a serious martini drinker [I like the guy already] and carried a martini ‘kit’ with him whever he traveled.  During the Teheran conference, he insisted on mixing one of his specialties for Joseph Stalin.  Stalin found it ‘cold on the stomach,’ but liked it.  FDR’s martini was most likely the first ‘Dirty Martini’.”

Definitely like the guy.  Although his Dirty Martini is kind of wussy as far as dirty martinis go.  2 parts gin, 1 part vermouth, 1 teaspoon olive brine, lemon twist, and a cocktail olive.  But as I’ve noted earlier, more vermouth to gin is okay with me when it’s gin.  When it’s vodka, not so much.  Me, I prefer a vodka dirty martini and I like it very dirty, as you’ve probably figured out by now, and very dry.  But I’m not FDR, and we’re talking a good … yikes, what, 70-80 years ago?  Oh dear.  Anyway, this was educational for me, reading up on FDR and his infidelities (ditto with Eleanor and hers, some of them with the same gender, but not until after he committed his).  I had no idea.  Alas, my high school history education ended somewhere between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.  Why?  Because I was taking Chemistry II, which met at the same time that the “gifted” history class met, so I ended up in the so-called bonehead history class for my senior year.  After the first quarter/semester (whichever it was – we’re going back waaaaay too far for me to remember which), my history teacher realized that everyone in the class was going out of their way to copy off my paper/tests and that I was throwing the curve way off.  So he gave me a “research” assignment to find all of the CIF championship victories for my high school dating back to something like 1898 when the school was established, which I did, to the best of my ability, given the fact that there was no internet in that day and age (1980).  That encompassed the 2nd half of my senior year and thus took the place of learning about anything beyond the early 1800’s.  I’m not sure why I know about WWI and WWII and various other things, I must have learned that in junior high on a more peripheral level and remembered it.  But I never got to learn about Teddy or FDR or Eleanor.  Or martinis.  Not that martinis would have been appropriate subject matter back in my high school day.  Now?  No idea.  But you gotta like FDR for the fact that he carried around the fixings with him.

As for the namesake drink itself – I give it a “DNS” rating.  Which stands for “Does Not Suck”.  Not quite a 4 stars but definitely a 3.75 stars.  As I mentioned before, I think I like the higher proportions of vermouth when gin is invovled but not vodka.  The lemon twist (rubbed around the rim of a chilled cocktail glass before serving, then discarded) and the olive are a nice touch.  I liked this one more than I expected I would and give FDR credit, assuming credit is due, for coming up with a good one.

Since I will be working long hours Monday and Tuesday to nip a project in the bud (read: needy clients and preventing work from permeating my Thanksgiving break), Steve so kindly obliged to taking his bequeathed daughter-dog home with him to simplify my life for the next few days. After he returned home from the Chicagopolis drive, we chatted on Skype for a bit. For the first time in Olive’s life I was on the other end of the weird talking light-box. If you have a dog, I am confident you can fully understand her body language.

25 % coco
20 % karité (dont 5 % à la trace)
15 % cacao
30 % olive
10 % ricin

A la trace :
Fragrance Lolita Lempicka
Ultramarine rose
6 g de sucre (pour voir si ça fait des grosses bulles)
5 % du poids du karité
Paillettes
Colorant alimentaire violet pour le marbrage (qui donne du rose/rouge d’ailleurs )

Soude à recalculer.

J’ai fait un batch de 1 kg de gras.

I am very happy with the way this is looking.  There are no shoulder seams.  You knit down from the back.It nice to do something different.  The yarn is a lovely combination of cotton, wool and nylon.  It feels soft and is easy to knit.

 Olive helped.Cora is doing her exercises.  She likes to drag herself across the rug.
