I’ve been super busy with freelance work and academic deadlines in the last few weeks, so apologies for the lack of updates. Here’s a bumper one to sate your appetite.

I recently interviewed long-term electro/ techno producer Florian Senfter, aka Zombie Nation, for Ibiza Voice. We chatted about his new album, collaborating with Tiga as ZZT and why he likes Munich. Read it here.

Another big album release this autumn has been Miguel Campbell’s debut LP on Hot Creations. In fact, it’s the first album anyone has put out on Hot Creations. I had a little chat with the Leeds-based producer and DJ back in October, about how disco has been held down in in the ‘north’ until recently and his role in liberating it. Read it here.

I’ve got a few label profiles coming up on Ibiza Voice. One that has just been published is my feature on German deep-house label Lucidflow. I spoke to label owners Nadja Lind and Helmut Ebritsch about the imprint’s origins and future. Read it here.

Ibiza Voice have also published a number of my reviews recently. See below for a brief run through of what’s gone live:

Franklin De Costa – Belongings (Vitalik)

Oliver Lieb – Collider (Diametral)

Maribou State – Scarlet Groove (Southern Fried Records)

On a typical British afternoon when the weather couldn’t decide if it wanted to be sunny and warm, or wet and miserable, Knockturnal and I went to SW4 on Clapham Common to make the most of the sold out saturday and interview dance music legend John Digweed. Mr Digweed was one of the headliners on the main stage, so we had some time to kill but after trudging through yet more mud and seeing far to many grown men wearing nappies, it was refreshing to finally catch up with Mr Digweed who took time out of his busy schedule to chat to us about his label bedrock, playing mammoth 13 hour sets and to reminisce about his early days of playing acid house parties.

WANARB : Afternoon John, thanks for having us.

John Digweed : Pleasure

WB: We thought we would kick off the interview with a question about how you got into DJing, we checked your biography and it said that you started DJing at 15 but Wikipedia said aged 4, could you clear that up for us?

JD : (Laughs) Well there’s this thing called Hacking.

WB : Ha, yeah well that’s why we checked the Biography.

JD : Yeah it’s all bollocks, there’s some classic stuff that been hacked on there, I was known as Kevin Digweed for a while…

WB : Yeah we couldn’t quite believe Wikipedia’s claims, I doubt you could even reach a set of decks at that age, so just to confirm. Wikipedia is Nonsense. You’re far to busy to be bothering with Wikipedia anyway, what’s been the highlight of the year so far?

JD : I’ve done a lot this summer, but one of the highlights so far has been a show I played the Mayan Theatre last month in the heat of L.A. The show was on a Wednesday night which is a tough night anywhere in the world but it was completely sold out, it was mental! It’s something i have been doing for the last 10-11 years so it feels like a family homecoming every time I play there. There was also the usual summer stuff like Carl Cox’s night at Space and this excellent festival in hungary called Balaton Sound.

WB : We’re still only two thirds of the way through the year and you’re not showing any sign’s of slowing down, is the last half of the year going to be busy as the first half for you?

JD : Oh most definitely, but thankfully I’m not as busy as some of the guys. But if you’re doing something that you love then you don’t notice how busy you are. I was talking to Richie Hawtin in Ibiza recently and he’s got 19 gigs in one month.

WB : Really? Jesus, i hope they’re all close by.

JD : Nope, they’re spread all over Europe, it would be nice if you could do all your gigs at your local.

WB : He’s (Richie Hawtin) is trying to squeeze in a world tour, have you ever done as many gigs as that in one go?

JD : It’s one of those things really, as i said before if you’re enjoying it then it doesn’t matter but i have done 37 gigs in 6 weeks for the Delta Heavy Tour with Sasha and Jimmy Van M. It’s only when you stop that you realise how tired you actually are and start to slow down.

WB : Have you got any plans to stop?

JD : No and the reason why is that there are so many new markets in the world for Dance Music, it used to be that in Winter you would just head to Australia but now you have places like Brazil, Argentina, actually most of South America and parts of Asia so the Summer never really seems to stop, therefore you don’t ever have to stop.

WB : Well the summer is definitely coming to an end in the UK, what little we had of it, SW4 is not a bad way to finish with its alternating sun and rain, do you miss the big clubs over the summer or do you prefer the festivals?

JD : I like doing both, the big festival crowds are huge fun and its amazing to play in front of so many people which you wouldn’t be able to do in a club but then I do enjoy the intimacy of 500 capacity clubs. It all depends on your mindset really and you wouldn’t find me playing a festival set in a club so the two are very different.

WB : So you tailor each set to the event or do you turn up on the day and gauge the crowd?

JD : The last few days I’ve been going through my music for this set thinking this is too underground or this track isn’t right. You have to be careful with your style of music because there are people in the crowd who love your music and are there to see you but there are also the people who have turned up for something completely different. They might even be waiting for the next act so you don’t want to alienate those people, I’m not trying to please everyone but I still want to play a good set.

WB : Talking of playing good sets, you’ve DJ’ed for some marathon sessions before, 10 hours + in some cases. We heard one horror story about Carl Cox who played for 8 hours with diarrhea, anything that bad?

JD : (Laughs) Sometimes they are the best sets, I’ve played for 13 hours before at Cavo Paradiso in Mykonos.

WB : (Astonished) 13 hours? I don’t think I’ve done a day job for that long! That sounds incredibly brutal, do you do that often?

JD : Well it wasnt supposed to be that long but the party just kept on going, there wasn’t any licensing laws out there and no one wanted to leave, so we just kept on going. I knew I was playing a long set that evening but didn’t predict that it would go on for so long, it’s not like I was going to play all my best records in the first hour.

WB : But what about toilet breaks? Piss into a bottle, spare DJ perhaps?

JD : Well I have some really long records or make sure there is a toilet close by.

WB : Very crafty, we’ve seen a lot of production coming out of your label, Bedrock this year, has this been one of your best years?

JD : Bedrock is having one of its best years ever, I released Structures 2 in July after the success of the first structures compilation and we put out two albums from Guy J and Marco Bailey. There’s also singles from Oliver Lieb and Robert Babbage. We sit on that nice area between Techno and House, I think people are starting to realise that the record label is putting out some really solid stuff.

WB : We saw that Alan Fitzpatrick also recently released on Bedrock?

JD : Well Alan released reflections with Bedrock a while back, he wanted to follow that up and release something else on the label. When he sent over Moon Palace I was really impressed. Its good, because Alan is well-known for his hard style of techno especially when he’s releasing under Drumcode but with this single he made it more punchy, bouncy Techno.

WB : It’s not the usual head down, chin-stroking techno. He’s appealing a bit more to the masses but not to the point where it sounds over commercialised.

JD : Yea exactly, I played this track second to last and it went down really well with the crowd. I dont think you want all your tunes to be head down, chin-stroking records, I find that the best way to test drive the new records from the label is at big festivals like this, the crowd will usually have a broad range of musical taste so if the record goes down well all across the crowd then you know you’ve got a winner.

WB : Do you get involved with the production of any of the music on the label?

JD : I’m not in the studio but I get sent all the new production and I will listen back to all of it. I might make a few suggestions, then send it back but the majority of finished production that I get is of very high quality and well polished, so there’s never many times that I have to send it back.

WB : We wanted to ask you about how you got started in the business, we recently co-promoted an Acid house night with Raindance Jenkins Lane. Raindance was instrumental in building the scene we have now and you were part of that. What do you remember about that era?

JD : Ah, Jenkins Lane and Raindance. It was an amazing period, at the time I was involved with a company called Storm. I remember when I was doing those parties with Storm and going to the Raindance parties, I was thinking at the time this is going to end soon. The kids are going to get bored with this. But it never happened, it just kept getting bigger and bigger.

I remember going to one Jenkins Lane party and seeing the Prodigy just after they released ‘Charlie’, I thought this is mind-blowing. Then a year later there was a massive Storm party at the Brighton Centre and Adamski was there, then Seal comes on stage and sung ‘Killer’ which went on to be No 1 a few weeks later. It was an incredible period of Dance music.

Those times were so different, people back then went to raves as they did not want to conform to the with the standard club goers, they were looking for something different, something more exciting. Now it’s the other way round, people go to the raves to fit in with everyone else, raving in a carpark or warehouse is the norm. Back then it was a rebellion against the club scene, now IT IS the club scene. In those days people would travel to dance in a circus tent just off the A13 or the M25.

WB : You’re making us very depressed about not being old enough to enjoy that era, was the music of that scene a major factor in the development of your sound?

JD : I was DJing in ’87 with Carl Cox and I remember going to Heaven to see Frankie Knuckles for the first time when he came to London, the gig was incredible and I became really excited about the Chicago House sound. Then there was the Sun Rise parties and the Raindance parties, they all had a profound effect on me. If you told me back then that I would still be DJing around the world in 20 years time, I wouldn’t think it was possible but it just goes to show that this scene has amazing legs and keeps evolving with new producers and sounds. I don’t think I will ever get bored with this.

WB : This sounds like a perfect sum up to an interview, John, thank you for your time.

JD : No problem, Thank you.

Bank Holiday Sunday was a special one this year in Nation, the home of Cream in Liverpool England. This day marked the second reunion party at one of the most recognized clubs in the world (the first took place on February of this year). From 1992 to 2002, Cream hosted some of the best DJs in the world, such as Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, and Paul van Dyk amongst others. They celebrated their longevity with this big party, which featured vocalist Jan Johnston, Seb Fontaine, Samuel Lamont, and German EDM legend Oliver Lieb. I have chosen to upload Oliver’s set from the night as a throwback because he played stricly old school tunes. All of them were either produced or remixed by Oliver himself, and the tracklist contains a lot of work from many of his popular aliases (LSG, Mindspace, Paragliders, S.O.L.). The theme of this mix is throwback trance, the original form of hypnotic music that actually fits the definition of trance. Tracks such as Dreamstate, Lithium 1, and Hope are all deep and spellbinding. I love getting lost in these classic tunes; it’s something that rarely happens with today’s style of trance. Check out a recent interview with Oliver at the bottom of the post, and there is also a link to Sam Lamont’s closing set from the night if you are interested.

Oliver Lieb interview with Skiddle:

Ahead of his much anticipated classics set at the Cream Reunion we caught up with German legend and electronic pioneer Oliver Lieb for a chat about his career, his equipment, the UK scene and what the future holds.

You’ve written some of the most genre defining records of all time. Did you think at the time that they would become as big as they have?

No – nothing was planned. I just produced music and was happy to release the amount of output I had. It was great to see it work but whether it was really, really big or just doing quite well wasn’t particularly important to me.

You’ve probably become most popular under your LSG moniker, but which of your own productions are you most proud of?

Hmm… everything stands for a time period or maybe a situation, feeling or whatever was going on then so it’s hard to say. There is stuff that I prefer and still could listen to and there are other tracks where it’s hard for me to understand why I did things like that.

The albums always had a kind of bigger concept behind them than an EP or maxi, so in a way they mean more to me. Also I’m proud of the LSG project as it developed over the years and also the split up between the Black album sound and then the Into Deep album.

Did you decide to become a DJ in order for your productions to be heard or had it interested you before you started producing?

In 87/88 I started with electronic music. Before, I played bass since I was 14 so music to me was more something “with” and “in front” of other people. When the role of the DJ changed from a kind of jukebox to more an individual person that had a choice of sound and music I found that interesting, but my main focus still was producing. There was the choice in the 90s to be DJ or live-act and with my background I decided that live-act was more interesting. Many years later I thought again about the DJing to replace the live act for a lot of reasons and have done that for some years now.

What equipment are you using to play live these days, and what were you using back then?

Back then when I was a live act I started with a hardware sequencer, sampler and a juno 106, a mixer and fx unit and a small midi keyboard to play some samples live.

As a DJ I started with vinyl of course, then tried final scratch for a short time before switching to traktor which I still use. I am thinking about a cool way to do a live-act again in the near future without just having a laptop.

What elements of a track are most important to you and how long do you usually spend producing a record, from start to finish?

An outstanding track always has a mix of strong elements… the bass and drum groove is very important but the main “catchy” or melodic element combined with the arrangement and the overall sound quality is important to me too.

The initial idea is just a few hours, then getting everything fine-tuned and checking out effects and arrangement might take 2-4 days depending on the track.

What was your favourite bit of kit in the 90s and do you still use it today?

Oh there’s quite a few, it’s the Kyma System that I still use every now and then and get deeply in there programming some weird effects. Also some of my effect units like the Dsp4000 and the Lexicon 480l as well as the Nordlead 2, 3, Nordmodular.

You’re renowned for your love of hardware synths. Have you found a place for VSTs in the studio yet or do you still prefer the older kit?

Depending on what I do… most of the time is the original since they are here, but there are some great fx plug-ins – more to get new or special sounds rather than emulating old ones.

You run your own mastering and vinyl cutting studio, so it’s probably safe to say you are a big fan of vinyl – how do you feel about the latest advances in laptop DJ technology?

I started my own mastering company http://www.lhaudio.com and bought some high-end compressors and eqs. I am a big sound fan so just mastering wasn’t enough, since I wanted to bring the mastered sound as close as possible on vinyl without relying on other people.

For me it’s really important to release on vinyl. Everybody takes a vinyl release more serious than just a digital release. Or maybe you could create a website for a digital release but who does that for a maxi or EP?
The advances of laptop DJing to me is that you can take a lot of records with your hand luggage and so you are 100% sure it gets with you when you fly somewhere. It sounds stupid but I’ve had that too often in the past.

Another problem to me is sound. A lot of DJs think that it’s completely ok to play mp3 192kb files and I can only say that the club audience should get the “best” sound – not only by a great sound system that the club might have installed – but also by playing wav files, the full on sound! On a good club sound system there is a massive difference even from a wav to a 320kb file. Sadly these days where everybody listens to mp3s on an ipod or a small pc-speaker setup, sound doesn’t seem to be that important anymore.

Your new label Maschine has a very different sound to the trance you pioneered during the 90s. Do you feel this is a natural progression of what you were writing back then or have you consciously changed direction in response to the way the trance scene developed?

In the 90s as well as now I did “electronic music”… there was no “trance” when I started. I also did all kind of music like harder, techno, house etc. I just felt like no borders… So the label is the direction I felt like taking in 2005.

I did have a break in 2008 to 2010 from producing and was only releasing other people’s music. I had to focus on the new mastering and cutting company I started and the building of the studio, moving the studio and so many other things that I wanted to do in that time.

Since late 2010 I am producing again and also now I will continue with my way of doing all kinds of stuff here and there. I never cared about the scene too much to have it taken control over what I do or not.

How do you feel about the dance music industry constantly recycling older records? Is it an opportunity to give them longevity or is it just demonstrating a lack of creativity?

To me the problem is not somebody using an old sample, it’s more the people that pretty much redo the whole song and put their name in the credits without permission or even asking.

Without original music there is no progress. No progress means that people don’t buy or really care about this formerly “innovative” style of music. These days with so many releases it’s even hard for DJs to keep updated and to find the good amongst the bad. Before people would latch on to progress and changes in the music and kept following the acts or the scene in general. Today, those that come across this music often will leave it after a while as they don’t understand the little progresses.

In a career that’s spanned over 20 years the industry has changed immeasurably. Where do you see it going next?

Hmmm, it’s hard to say as this current period is very important and will influence whether the scene will continue to deteriorate or maybe become a bit more stable and healthy.

You’ve played at Cream, Creamfields and a host of UK clubs. How did the scene back then rate to that in Germany and the rest of Europe?

I have always loved the UK club scene. The people were always more open minded than I ever expected and went out to party not to stand around looking bored. From about 10 years ago I played more techno and harder stuff since to me the “trance” sound was starting to become a bit boring without developing. The music where something was happening was techno to me and the UK crowds I played to were very open to it including the Creamfields gig.

What can we expect from you at the Cream Reunion on the 29th May?

At the moment I plan to play vinyl and bring a lot of my records and remixes from between 94 and 2004 with me. Then we will see what is going to happen, some tracks are in there for sure, others I will decide during the set. I think the main focus this time will be on my productions and remixes with a few other people’s records in there. This is a different night and I’m really looking forward to it!

Summer is fast approaching so I have uploaded this classic compilation mixed by DJ Tiesto. This album was released over 11 years ago and it still finds its way into my playlist today. Despite Tijs’ recent denunciation for trance music, it’s pretty hard to ignore the impact he has bestowed on the trance movement. This was Tiesto’s first US release, and it contains many popular songs from early on in the last decade. There’s a couple of female vocal tracks which compliment the summer theme of this album, including the voices of Kirsty Hawkshaw in Dreaming and Sarah McLachlan in Silence. What I really enjoy most about this album is the number of well respected producers you can find in here. The mix features work from Armin van Buuren, BT, Oliver Lieb, and Nick Muir in the form of Cabala. This album was also the first time I was exposed to Major League’s Wonder, which is still today one of my favorite collaborations of all time. Overall this CD has a bit more of a commercial feel to it when compared to the Magik series, but it still has plenty of goodies that keep you groovin from start to finish.

Yesterday’s J00F post got me in the mood for some classic goa-inspired trance, so I looked back in time for a good album to remedy my craving. What I have known for a while is that there are few labels greater than Platipus that can provide such musical entertainment, so I have uploaded one of their nice releases from back in the day. Well, at least Platipus was able to provide this type of music towards the first half of its existence, but that’s a whole new discussion. Every so often this label would release something like a best-of-series which contained a handful of their better songs. The third volume came out in 1997, and this collection of tracks has proved to be timeless. Starting off with the very popular combination of BT, Taylor, and Jan Johnston in the tune Calling Your Name (anyone remember this in the movie American Pie?), this album takes you on a magical journey with some of the best trance producers in history. Guys like Oliver Lieb, BT, Simon Berry, Claudio Guissani, and all of their aliases should be recognizable to you. Platipus jump started the careers of Union Jack and Art of Trance, so it is important to understand where these guys came from. Check out what this British crew was doing before the turn of the century, but keep in mind that this is just a sample of the greatness that was once Platipus.

Lieb is known to have more than a dozen aliases with over 200 productions and remixes in various electronic genres. Superstition Records have described Oliver Lieb’s studio as one of the most exciting equipment collections of the entire techno scene. It contains dozens of synthesisers, many of them rare or unusual. He prefers analogue equipment, valuing especially oscillators capable of producing extraordinarily deep bass frequencies. His music typically consists of atypical sound tapestries and melodies intervowen. Using his moniker L.S.G. he released the mixed album “Into deep” in 2000 on Hooj choons. This release and this volume, the second, are in my humble opinion a timeless masterpiece of the dowtempo/chill genre. Compositionally, every element fits altogether as nothing feels superfluous. The deep subterrenaian bowels of crunchy trip-hop loops soars through bright angelic pads and voices. This album is definitely worth listening to, if anything for the dreamy layers of sound & mystical Spanish quotes overlaid with some real heart throbbing moments of bass & pads. You will be wishing yourself by a beach whilst on that packed train on a wet Monday morning with this on…P.S. : Thanks to my friend Ramyt Ramit from Hawaï who gave me this mix

Most have there peaks, there moments and easily go stale. Chloe Harris‘ B-Sides radio show featured on Proton Radio has consistently delivered and has been a big influence for me over the years and no show highlights this more than her latest two hour ambient journey.

From the atmospheric ‘Electro Rain’, to the melodic beatless mix of Chymera’s ‘Umbrella’, the mix flutters throughout a spectrum of sleep inducing sounds that’ll have the ambient trainspotter going giddy with excitement.

A címe híven tükrözi célját : INTO DEEP

Saját feltöltés!

A team of Secret Special Soldiers go exploring an old abandoned goldmine. They are all wearing standard issue paintball uniforms, which come with black short-sleeved t-shirts, elbow pads, and teensy-tiny helmets. Yes, they are well prepared against bloodthirsty monsters from an alternate dimension.

The team comes to a dead-end, and one of them shouts, “Dead-end! Let’s investigate!”

If you like dead-ends, this movie is chock full of ‘em! Actor Christian Slater is in this, and he loves dead-ends! Whether it’s his relationships, his job, or even his quest to save the world. One thing never leads to another!

What to expect with this movie Alone in the Dark:

1) An ancient puzzle of gold, the pieces of which are scattered throughout the globe . . . and nobody bothers putting it together—ever!

2) A golden box, lost at sea for thousands of years. What’s inside? No clue! A guy who pulls it up onto his boat keeps reminding us, “This thing is solid gold!” Two scenes later: “Even the handles are solid gold!” And then, after opening it, just about everyone on his ship dies a bloody death. From what? No clue!

3) A couple of suspenseful scenes with Christian Slater, alone with his girlfriend, hunted by something lurking in the dark. Creatures materialize out of thin air and become the special effects highlight of the movie.

4) A depressing finale. It’s like turning over pebbles in a dead-end cave only to have it collapse on your head, leaving you with one massive logic-defying headache.

End of dead-end.

(However, check the official movie website to be REALLY creeped out … apparently Alone in the Dark is still in theaters!)
