If you’re into this sound make sure to check out Machinedrum, .. also The Host (aka Boxcutter) and Kuedo have some similar 160 bpm sounds but more along the lines of Minimal Juke but have similar sounds and styles to the early Intelligent Drum and Bass days. Those guys all have releases on Planet Mu … actually you should be checking out every release that label puts out … QUALITY!

Another dude making the Footwork / Jungle sound is Bristol’s ActRaiser … I chatted with him recently and he’s been working hard putting together some studio mixes along with remixes of some Jungle rarities in the Footwork style.

Big Mister Doom are Leeds-based Ian Scott and Joe Wretham. In 2010 Big Mister Doom self-released their self-titled EP; a dense and articulate exploration of electronic music. Since then they’ve been remixing work of artists like Eskimo Twins, Muskoaka, Pierce Warnecke, OptiMace and Paper Tiger, working on live performances and preparing new material for 2012. They released their wonderful EP ‘Tinderbox‘ on Fremdtunes in February!

Take Reso‘s Jungle reworking of ‘Ulysses’ from Om Unit‘s ‘Aeolian’ EP (out next month). The original is a fast-paced 2-step number, but when Reso gets his hands on it he takes us back to the days when IDM, jungle and breakcore all intermarried, bearing beautiful children all with his own unique stamp on it.

If you like your breaks fast and noisy, check this remix out (although, you’ll only find it on the digital version). While it’s markedly different from the rest of the EP, it only emphasises the darkness of this space-age bass exploration.

So check it out, Bleep’s Sonar fest is starting this week and they’ve decided to showcase some of the artists performing at the festival. Bleep has put together a “FREE”4 track EP made up of exclusive tracks, with DOPE beat-maestros on it with the likes of Amon Tobin, Thundercat, Lapalux, Om unit and Nightwave.

New video out last week from leftfield drum & bass stalwart, Fracture, via D-Bridge’s Exit Recordings, featuring vocalist Dawn Day Night.  The tune is pretty weird, seeing Fracture experiment with very different drum syncopation and juke-like vocal sampling – and the video is even weirder (and highly entertaining).

The story has it that Fracture and Dawn Day Night teamed up after they met outside a members only voodoo bar in an unknown location that smelled of cowfoot. Fracture was denied access as he was dressed too normally but waited outside to catch a glimpse of the patrons when they left.
All is explained in the Get Busy video, introducing Dawn Day Night in all his grotesque glory . . .

I got to know Fracture & Neptune buying their “drumfunk” records throughout the 2000′s, including favorites such as “Bless Me” from Bassbin Records, all of which have been collected on to a compilation called Retrospect: A Decade Of Fracture & Neptune released on their newly founded Astrophonica label.

They are also wading into unfamiliar territory with their new label, including a new vinyl 10-inch VIP series of jungle meets juke material, including the first release – Fracture’s VIP mix of “The Limit” – as well as forthcoming tuneage from Om Unit/Phillip D Kick & Machinedrum to follow.

Dropped this on the show a few weeks ago. The 7″ is out now on All City.

One of many but with a very distinctive sound, Om Unit has already captured the minds of beat fanatics with his work to date. Style-wise you could say “post-genre” or just “Electronic Beats?”… Genres are like borders, rapidly becoming obselete when we see the world today as having an ever increasing merging of styles and influences. put simply, its electronic music.

We are hyped for this next one by Om Unit. Releases on his Cosmic Bridge label have been consistently banging, if you haven’t checked those out. Not heard Tamara Blessa before either, niceness. The Aeolian EP, featuring artwork by the homie Kutmah, is out on Civil Music in July.

Sa-Ra and Om Unit, Los Angeles to London connection

On July 2, London based producer Ean Kraytah, a former member of vaulted grime/folk music collective Various, will release a new EP on Om Unit’s record label, Cosmic Bridge Records. It seems Ean and Om Unit share an appreciation for the common threads among juke, jungle, and drum and bass, as apparent on the new EP; Ean serves up ace examples of dark sonic artillery with characteristics of all said styles. Kraytah takes the listener on a pensive voyage into the night in search of the source of darkness through foreboding bass, frenetic percussion, and vast halls of sound. “Darknet EP” gets down to the business of euphoric catharsis by leaning forward into sunless realms. Very highly recommended.

On May 14th, Jim Coles, also known as Om Unit, is set to treat the world to more of his glowing productions on “Om Unit Edits #1,” a 10″ vinyl-only affair. The enigmatic Coles has donned multiple personas and been a part of several collaborations; he is one half of  Dream Continuum (his jungle and ghetto house collaboration with Machinedrum), has collaborated with dubstep kingpin Kromestar for releases on the Cosmic Bridge label which Coles founded, and has released a free, digital-only series of bootleg juke and footwork-infused edits of jungle anthems under the pseudonym Philip D Kick.

Expect cinematic string samples, acoustic guitar, mellow disco rhythms, jazzy piano, and what sounds like Barrington Levy’s vocals over a snug beat replete with sultry saxophone melodies. Don’t sleep on the forthcoming “Om Unit Edits #1,” another of Coles’ counterpart to his more frenetic productions.

Although some of the tunes here are of a darker nature, life is about to get a little bit brighter: “Illum Sphere Remixed,” will drop on May 7, 2012, on Manchester-based label Fat City. Many of you know Illum Sphere for his much talked about 2009 debut, “Incoming EP,” as well as two critically acclaimed follow-up EPs, “Long Live the Plan” and “The Plan is Dead,” all three of which are considerably diverse installations in the chronicles of dubstep and experimental beats. This time around, there is no new brand new, original material coming directly from the Mancunian producer, but rather bona fide gems in the form of remixes from some familiar faces.

Kidkanevil serves up a deadly, rough ragga jungle edit of “Agent White.” The original can be downloaded for free here. Glitch-hop pioneer, Dabrye whips up cool, confident beats and glittering synth melodies on his remix of “An Old Escape.” Ikonika gives Illum Sphere’s “Chasing the Midnight Moth” her idiosyncratic treatment of soulful, funky four:four house rhythms. One of the EP’s highlights is the remix from man-of-the-moment, Om Unit, who lifts Illum Sphere’s “Never Lie Twice” up to a higher plane by adding earnest melodies, spacious percussion, massive bass weight, spiralling synths and samples of a sincere dialogue on the topic of spiritual principles. Taken in the context of Om Unit’s own catalog of quality productions and his recently minted Cosmic Bridge record label, you get the feeling this guy is about making music that is more than just a passing trend. Finally, Scumbag of Crimekillz presents a glitchy take on “One for Dimlite,” setting hihats and acoustic guitar on rapidfire and adding a substantially more heavyweight hip hop rhythm, as opposed to the original’s smoother, jazzier feel, while maintaining the pitch-shifted vocals. Ey fam, bredren, sisters, and cuzzies.  I hope all is well, that Jah’s been elevating your soul through some beautiful music this week. I’m feeling the vibez on a couple tunes I wanted to bring to your attention today.  Tunes that while they may not be the newest in the bunch, there’s a good chance they were overlooked by many of you, and some are even FREE!!!  So without much more to say, open your ears wide, while the tunes providea sense of balance as we share a state of mind.

First up is big dogg Kavsrave, a man who mashes a sense of funk into his tunes over purple-infused synths and basslines.  Coming from Croydon, Kavsrave found his niche on Numbers Records after recommendations from the likes of Joy Orbison.  In his tunes you’ll find a heavy R&B influence, which complements a well developed bassline so nicely in my opinion.  His first release ‘Pclart/Tightly Closed’ was extra large, and recently he released a FREE tune titled ‘No More’ (Slow Jams).  The tune has an amazing vibe to it, kick bass that makes the trunk of your car slump, with high-end rhythms that provide a memorable appeal.  Maximum respect to Kavsrave!

Seriously feeling the vibes of this next release.  Original badman Kromestar comes at us with a couple dance floor skankers, one deep, the other bouncy.  Set to release on April 16 on Om Unit‘s Cosmic Bridge, marking the labels third release, Kromestar brings the pressure with Parallel Sounds VIP’s. The first tune on the release titled ‘Outer Limit VIP’ is a straight banger, maximum sound system riddim with that patented Kromestar low-end.  The second tune, ‘Don’t Make Sense VIP’, is definitely the dancier of the two.  Packing some big booty bass, this one has a bouncy kick with a wobbling synth that’s sure to put you in a jolly state of mind.

We’ll send you out on a nice chilled vibe.  The tune comes as a remix done by Peaman, an artist we highlighted last week.  The tune titled ‘Steepless’, has a beautiful female vocal throughout and piano rhythm that seriously reminds me of D1, something along the lines of Chocolate Orange.  It was given out free last week, and seems to have hit the download limit but hopefully he’ll open it up again.
