This contest footage is amazing and apparently newly released from the BBC. Look at Buster Halterman and Darren Menditto (1:20 run!)killing it. I think this is some real important footage…Examine the year 1991! Let’s face facts vert skating at this point was in the decline that late 80’s wave that saw people like Groholski all over the mags is over. A lot of folks headed off for college since there was no real industry to earn a living from. Forgetting about that just look at the skating, you can see the trick modernisation that would come in the next year or two creeping in and the influences of people like Groholski and their emphasis on less crowd pleasing lip tricks creeping in (Bod Boyle frontside ollie to grind over the channel for instance, tough trick little point recognition I suppose, Look at Hawks run’s) Not a lot of kick turning on the invisible vert as Groholski would put it. Great stuff here it would not be soon after that a handful of skaters would start adding some mind blowing tricks to all this and the modernisation would be complete. It is great to see Team Steam’s contribution to this transition, re-vert skating, lip tricks galore…and shades of whats to come. You can write about this footage all day I guess…

Enjoy watching all this, I know I did.

PS : Dave Leroux! and look at Miller just travelling on the ramp…crazy.

You can see the results at the end of the last video…and check out the princely sums they were killing their bodies to obtain. Well done gentlemen, well done!

Thanks to Pete Furnee and his eagle eye!

Friday night saw a lot more pros out at the skatepark practicing for Saturday’s Rock The Cradle For Johnny Romano.

Since I had to work, I missed a lot of the action that happened that day, but was glad I caught the evening sessions which included Dave Duncan, Jimmy “The Greek” Marcus, Craig Johnson and Omar Hassan!

Dear Members and Supporters of Students for Palestine, Our chapter at Monash would like to make peop

Dear Members and Supporters of Students for Palestine, Our chapter at Monash would like to make people aware of a situation that has arisen on our campus and ask for your support.

The issue is that the Monash members of the National Organisation of Labor Students, who control the Student Association are again frustrating and sabotaging our campaign.

Students for Palestine has been intending on standing candidates in the Student Association Elections this year.

This fits with one of our aims as a group to win the support of the Student Association to our cause. One way we can do this is by electing pro-Palestine candidates to the student council and other positions.

It is also an important time of year where students are thinking about the political issues of the day and our campaign wishes to engage in this process to put forth a pro-Palestine position.

Running candidates on the campaign ticket will enhance the profile of our campaign and also enable us to show the level of support there is among students for a pro Palestine campaign. Further, we wish to build the rally for September 25 during this week.

However, Julian Campbell and Mark Baker of the Labor Students have registered the ticket name ’students for palestine’ and ‘free omar’ and have refused to grant control of it to the campaign.

This is a vicious and cynical manoevre designed to prevent the campaign running candidates, putting out material and deciding its own preferences.

Julian Campbell is the MSA president and voted against condemning the bombing of Gaza in January and moved a motion to dock Omar Hassan’s pay for his involvement in the Students for Palestine Campaign.

These people are not supporters of Palestine or our campaign. THey have no right to own the ticket. They have done nothing but obstruct the progress of our campaign.

This is a total insult to the hard work of the many many activists that have built up the campaign over the last year.

That they wish to garner votes for themselves by trading off the success of our campaign or deny us the ability to pursue our aims in the campaign is outrageous manipulation.

We will be appealing this to the election officer on the grounds that Students for Palestine is an existing organisation and does not consent to the use of its name by Julian Campbell or Mark Baker, or anyone else not endorsed by the campaign.

To support us, please pass motions that recognise that Julian Campbell and Mark Baker are not endorsed by the Students for Palestine.

The only people recognised are those democratically elected by the campaign groupo at Monash – which are Omar Hassan, Colleen Bolger and Phillipa Briglia. For more information, please contact Colleen Bolger on 0449 678 621.

FONTE Una Mano per AIL. Un percorso di solidarietà lungo 6 anni 28/05/09 > 28/05/09 – Milan

FONTE

Una Mano per AIL.
Un percorso di solidarietà lungo 6 anni
28/05/09 > 28/05/09 – Milano
11/06/09 > 11/06/09 – Roma

NUSA will write to Monash Students’ Association to express our strong condemnation of the suspension of Omar Hassan’s pay and urging them to reverse their decision.

Regardless of the views of individual Council members, student organisations should protect the rights of students to campaign on what is important to them, including in solidarity with Palestine, even if they are in a minority.

If MSA believes that Omar Hassan has breached the constitution, they should either take that to a relevant judicial tribunal or move to change their constitution.

NUSA finds MSA’s actions extraordinary in the context of a threat of disciplinary action by the Vice-Chancellor and a campaign to repeal VSU, and is greatly concerned that such action could encourage self-censorship. Student representatives should be congratulated for speaking out on issues which do not directly affect them.

UWSSA –

It has come to the attention of the UWS Student Association that Monash University Chancellor, Dr Alan Finkel, contacted the President of the Monash Student Association to argue that a campaign being run by an elected student representative, Omar Hassan, is “unconstitutional”.

UWSSA takes the following positions in relation to this matter:

UWWSA is disgusted by recent revelations that the Chancellor of Monash University, Dr Alan Finkel, feels that he has the right to silence elected student representatives.

UWSSA supports Omar Hassan’s right, as an elected office bearer, to run campaigns in a way he sees fit.

UWSSA firmly believes that student unions must have the freedom to run whatever campaigns they determine are relevant to their members. University administrations cannot and should not intrude into student
union matters.

UWSSA urges Monash University Chancellor, Dr Alan Finkel to retract any threats or statements made in relation to this issue.

UWSSA calls on the National Labor Students to take issue with this clear cut case of political censorship.

UWSSA believes that any Student Union official who colludes with a University administration to undermine other elected officials is a scab and should be condemned as such.

(the following is a press release issued today. While not endorsed by S4P as such, Vic S4P endorsed a similar press release yesterday which can been seen here)

Anger is developing amongst Monash University students following unprecedented moves by senior members of the university administration to pressure an elected student union official about his campaign activities.

Monash Chancellor, Dr Alan Finkel, contacted the President of the Monash Student Association to argue that a campaign being run by an elected student representative is “unconstitutional”.

“It is disgraceful that the Chancellor of Monash University feels that he has the right to silence elected student representatives” said Omar Hassan, Education Officer at the Monash Student Association.

“Student unions must have the freedom to run whatever campaigns we determine are relevant to our members. The University cannot and should not intrude into student union matters.” Mr Hassan went on to say.

“In Australian history, students have been central to challenging homophobia, sexism, war and apartheid, even when these struggles were unpopular or controversial. This is why the Liberal government introduced Voluntary Student Unionism. They wished to gag students’ voice.”

“This incident highlights the need to campaign against VSU until independent political representation for students is fully guaranteed.”

Mr Hassan has been actively involved in a campaign of solidarity for the people of Palestine.

This campaign, which began during Israel’s recent military assault on Gaza, has been gathering momentum.

“It is hard to believe that this unprecedented intervention by the University is not an attempt to silence growing student opposition to Israel?s violence towards the Palestinians” Mr Hassan said.

It has come to light that senior bureaucrats at Monash University are attempting to silence an activ

It has come to light that senior bureaucrats at Monash University are attempting to silence an activist in the student union from campaigning in Students for Palestine.

The university has been approached by a number of Zionist students, staff and private backers complaining about the upcoming Palestine Solidarity Week, and the involvement of a student union OB in the campaign. They have then approached the student union with a legal case stating that such a political campaign is unconstitutional, and therefore beyond the scope of the student union. The union is currently deliberating whether or not to punish me for running this campaign, potentially enforcing the university’s desire to censor a student representative.

The first thing to say is that this is precisely the sort of situation that the VSU legislation was designed to produce. The Monash student union is completely reliant on the University for funding, and as such we are in a difficult position when it comes to ensuring our political independence. As expressed by the NUS state president Mark Baker, the ALP’s blatant refusal to ensure funding for independent political representation represents their desire to continue gagging student unions. This has meant that the student union is actually deliberating whether or not to bow to the pressure placed on it by the University, and thereby punish an activist for running a political campaign.

What’s happening at Monash at the moment harkens back to what happened last year at Murdoch University, where the student union was told it could not run campaigns that offended the Vice Chancellor’s sensibilities – and let’s be clear, these were not controversial political campaigns. The trend here is that under VSU universities feel more confident to dictate to student unions what is and isn’t acceptable. This should be opposed on principle! Student unions must remain totally politically independent from universities; we must reserve our right to campaign on anything we want.

The issue is being discussed at Monash Student Council on tuesday morning at 10:30am in the short courses centre, and I urge activists at Monash to come along and fight to defend the independent political voice of student unions.

Students for Palestine statement on Monash education officer

Hi all,

Here is the statement from the cross-campus Students for Palestine on Monash Uni and Students Association’s despicable actions over Omar’s help with the Palestine solidarity campaign.

Katie Wood
Tivoli Campus Coordinator, RMIT Student Union
———————————–

Monash University, in collusion with the Monash Student Association has threatened to discipline the education officer, Omar Hassan, for his participation in the Palestine solidarity campaign.

The Victorian Students for Palestine is disgusted by this blatant act of political censorship. We believe that it is imperative for all people who are concerned by the deadly, racist and humiliating policies of Israel towards the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, to join us in the solidarity campaign. This is only more important following recent revelations of systemic racism in the Israeli military.

We fully support Omar in his work for the campaign and call on all student unions to demonstrate their support also. The Monash Student Association has a long history of support for political campaigns, including those against the Vietnam War and apartheid in South Africa to name just two. We call on the Monash Student Association to affirm this proud history by refusing to take action against Omar.

Further, we strongly condemn Monash University for this biased interference in student affairs.

O presidente sudanês, Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir
