Pros: Menu options and food quality
Cons: Long wait

This busy breakfast spot with two locations (South Loop and River North) is the ideal place to enjoy the most important meal of the day. Believe me, I wish I could every morning! This is no IHOP or Waffle House although the prices are similar even while the quality is light years above either of those places. To call the menu extensive would be an understatement and I mean that in the best way possible. Any type of breakfast/ brunch meal you can think of is available from the classic to some of their own unique and creative selections.
To begin with I recommend trying the Fresh Squeezed Strawberry-Orange Juice or just a plain old cup of their tasty Joe. For those of us who occasionally enjoy a Mimosa or Bloody Mary with our weekend brunch, there are unfortunately no adult beverages available.
Take your time perusing their menu before deciding which delectable item to try as there are some very unique meals available (for example Green Eggs and Ham). There are many healthy options such as multi-grain waffles/ pancakes with fresh fruit and drizzled with honey instead of maple syrup. And what breakfast joint would be complete without at least a few greasy items? Whether you’re a health nut or a meat and potatoes kind of person you can’t go wrong either way.
Aside from an amazing meal the one other guarantee that comes with eating at Yolk is the long wait for a table. Expect a 30-45 minute wait but please heed me when I say not to let that minor detail deter you. The food is well worth waiting for and once you dine here I can guarantee you will want to start every day with a fresh, inspired breakfast at Yolk.

Honey Trees

In Poland’s Spala forest a small team of enthusiasts aim to attract bees to the area, by practicing an ancient form of beekeeping.

The Team of Polish beekeepers cut a hole in a tree and place honeycomb in there much like the one to the left. Any wild honeybees will then be attached to that area and hopefully will make a new home there. This way of beekeeping has been “out of style” since the 19th century.

The team was taught how to harvest honey from trees by Russians from Bashkortostan, where the practice is still going strong. They have 20 new honey tree nests around their area in hopes of attracting even more.

By the way, for those of you who might use the excuse of no space for backyard beekeeping as your defense for not doing so, well no more! Omlet, a British company, has made a hive for small garden and urban beekeepers alike. Just before you start keeping bees in a city, make sure you check your local laws and by-laws about if you can even have an apiary. You don’t want to end up like the Brooklyn beekeeper that has been busted for backyard beekeeping.

from: nytimes.com

“Johannes Paul and his future business partners were brainstorming about what to do with their degrees in industrial design when one of their mothers offered a suggestion: Could they build a better chicken coop?

“It was one of those funny moments,” Mr. Paul said. “Either we could have said, ‘That’s ridiculous. We’re not at one of the best design colleges in the world to design houses for chickens,”’ he said.

“Instead, we all agreed it was a great idea.”

Soon after Mr. Paul’s graduation from the Royal College of Art in London, the partners founded a company called Omlet, which is based in Oxfordshire, England. They dubbed their creation the Eglu.

As the name suggests, the device has the look of an igloo. Made of plastic, it is robust enough to protect against urban predators like foxes, dogs and raccoons. The design also makes it easy to retrieve newly laid eggs, even if users have never kept chickens before.”

Your choice or ingredients, e.g. cheese, ham, sausage, dried peppers, onion flakes, herbs, pepper and salt

Note: Eggs can go bad quickly, so only use eggs on the beginning of your trip.

At home: crack eggs into quart size freezer zip lock bag. Add all other ingredients. Mix well and seal.

In camp: bring half a pot of water to boil. When it boils turn it down to a simmer. Set the sealed bag inside the pot and let it simmer in the water, flipping over carefully every once in awhile. You will want to take the bag out of the water periodically and carefully squish the contents so that uncooked egg inside gets to the outside. After a few minutes the eggs should be cooked and you are ready to eat!
Makes 1 serving

Hey All - I hope you are all having a superb weekend so far. It is going by pretty quickly - but

Hey All -

I hope you are all having a superb weekend so far. It is going by pretty quickly - but that is a sign of an enjoyable weekend, I guess.

Yesterday my friend Katherine came down to Rhode Island and she, mom and I went to see Julie & Julia. I had been waiting for this movie to come out for about a year. I loved the fact that there is a movie about a food blogger and Julia Child – one of my favorite chefs. I really enjoyed reading the book by Julie Powell and I had been looking forward to the movie for such a long time, it did not disappoint. One day I am going to own Mastering the Art of French Cooking, I promise! One of my friends told me not to go to the movie hungry – and I would pass that advice along to anyone who is going to see the film We snacked on popcorn during the movie – and we got through all of the wonderful looking food because we knew we had a fun dinner to come home to.

In honor of Julia, Katherine and I thought that we would make omelets for dinner – perhaps one of Julia’s favorite meals, and definitely one of her specialties. I definitely had a Julia moment in the kitchen – and our omelets turned into scrambled eggs with scallions and green peppers – but guess what? They were still delicious. As Ms. Child used to say, “no excuses.”

I think that one of the reasons our eggs turned out tasting so fantastic was that I did actually use butter in our omelet pan instead of cooking spray, Earth balance or some other substitute. Nothing compares to just cooking in butter Here is what the eggs ended up looking like:

The eggs tasted so good! But I must say I will definitely be trying omelets again this week – I must master the skill now that I’ve watched an entire episode of Julia Child’s cooking show on omelets.

Before we sat down to “omelets” we had a first course of gazpacho which was out of this world! It was almost spice, and full of flavor. I love anything where you can actually see pieces of garlic floating around. I just love this chilled soup! It was wonderful and it is the perfect dish in the summer, with a couple of pieces of French bread on the side.

Gazpacho is actually pretty simple to make – but we were lucky enough to find some at the Farmer’s Market this morning, so I saved a lot of time in the kitchen – lucky me!

Because I was making the eggs, I did not have a lot of time to enjoy the first course… first I sautéed our vegetables that were going to be the “filling” in the omelet, scallions and green peppers and they were cooked in a little bit of butter I removed the scallions and peppers and cooked the eggs, adding a the veggies and 1/4 cup of sharp cheddar cheese when the eggs were about half cooked. The scramble turned out to be great – but I still have to work on my omelet technique. That will be something I do this week, hopefully!

In an interesting turn of events, I decided to add the rest of my gespacho to my eggs – what a great combination (although really ugly – thus no photo was taken).

I had bought a raspberry “bar” from Seven Starts for dessert – but because we did not have dinner until about 10 o’clock we definitely did not need anything after the eggs. It was a “sort of” French meal on many levels – including the time that we sat down to dinner.

Breakfast:

This morning I decided to make pancakes. I put dark chocolate pieces into the batter for each individual pancake – about four or five chips for each cake. Once they were cooked I topped the pancakes with a touch of Earth Balance, fresh blueberries from the farmer’s market and about two tablespoons of syrup. It was a great breakfast!

OK – I’m off to enjoy Sunday. I’ll see you all tonight after I finish dinner..!

Keeping hens in our back gardens is growing in popularity. In Britain, as many as 500,000 homes now

Keeping hens in our back gardens is growing in popularity. In Britain, as many as 500,000 homes now keep chickens. Think how much you spend on eggs a year? Keeping a chicken costs just 3p a day.

There’s no laws preventing you from keeping hens, provided they are looked after properly. There’s no requirement to register them, as long as, you keep the numbers under 50. Keeping 2 to 4 chickens will be plenty and they live for around 4-5 years.

Can you provide 365 days a year care and have someone look after them when you are on holiday? Under The Animal Welfare Act 2006 it is against the law to be cruel to an animal, so you must take their welfare seriously – a suitable place to live, an appropriate diet and to be free of pain, suffering, disease and injury. Visit Defra for more advice. Feeding catering waste to any food producing animal or bird has been illegal since 2001. The Foot and Mouth outbreak eight years ago was as a result of feeding waste stock to livestock.

One hen can lay 250 eggs a year, depending on the breed and diet; keep quiet (it’s the cockerels who are the noisy ones and they aren’t required for hens to lay eggs, only if you want chicks) and provide lots of entertainment. In return, they don’t ask for much – some shelter and an outdoor space fenced off to keep them safe from foxes and cats. The more time you spend with them, the tamer they become. They love to find slugs, insects, seeds etc and some feed. Commercially produced poultry feed is available from online stockists, from pet shops, wholesalers and agricultural merchants. It is important to have a regular routine of keeping the shelter and area clean (with the eglu, this takes about 30 minutes once a week). Don’t leave food and water out as this attracts rats and mice.

Most of the time hens will eat neat, dry, organic pellets that come in sacks and for treats they will eat fruit, tinned sweetcorn, vegetables, pasta or grain scraps.

<img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2063" title="Egg Cosy.
I’ve fallen in love with Omlet’s website and their funky, bright, colourful hen homes called Eglus. Omlet’s website is full of advice and answers all the questions you may have. The eglu comes delivered and is installed with a demonstration and complete with two chickens. You are shown how to clip the chicken wings (painless) and how to hold your chicken. The eglu also comes complete with an all weather shade, food and water containers, omlet feed and 10 free egg boxes. The hens are child-friendly and will start laying one egg a day within a few weeks of you owning them.

Well, I set my alarm for 11am (went to bed at 3) and actually got UP around 11.15 – kinda proud.

VERY groggy. Ate a peach, read my Bible n then logged on to Team BeachBody (Im DanDann, naturally).

The asylum is wondrous. Who knew there were so many others in el manicomio.

RIGHT, so Im gonna go knock out the second half of the fit test…. Here goes

*************

So WOW. I Didn’t Die!! That’s Wonderful. It felt a lil easier today – tho granted, I only did HALF of the test – and the mildly easier one at that, but I dont feel like wandering the halls and passing out in my shower, so that’s Great.

Numbers for today were:

8-9 Globe Jumps (lost count)
16 Suicide Jumps
23-24 Pushup Jacks (maybe even 25)
8 Low Plank Obliques

Not too bad I s’pose – Though I assume they’d probably have been a titch lower had I done them AFTER teh other 4 tests… but hey. Gotta do what I gotta do.

BATHE!

(haha! So there’s a stream of sweat pouring down my bleeding cross tattoo – Im pretty sure it was supposed to be blood and Water, not sweat. Oh well.)

BATHE!

***************

Biggest problem – I dont know where to begin with monitoring calories. And as a vegetarian, most proteins have carbs in em.

According to the custom meal plan thingi, I’ve already had 813 calories today. Does this sound right to you?

1 Nectarine – 67cal
1 Omlet (3 egg w/ veggies) – 323cal
1c hashbrowns – 340cal ??? really??
2tsp mustard – 8 cal (homemade stone ground tho… is it the same?)
12oz Gatorade (I think? maybe less. Drank half yesterday) – 75cal (holy crap)

Really??? Is this right?

Im not totally convinced – probably cause I was semi making pieces up… like if a two egg veggie omlet is 260cal, then that 3rd egg must bring it up to 323?? And I THINK it may have been a cup of hashbrowns – for all I know it was a half cup – I dont know. Maybe 12oz gatorade??

Well… we’ll see.

I guess its not really that big of a deal – ACTually, it looks like I’m going to be UNDER for the day. If I eat EVERYTHING I’VE GOT I’ll only be at 2176 and I’m supposed to be at 2300. Go figure.

And then I’ll be out of food. What am I gonna do tomorrow??

I need some digestive enzymes too. There’s a whole bottle sitting on my shelf – in Cincinnati…. Doesnt help me here.

Im also starting to run low on fundage. I bought a smoothie from Starbucks today… I’d rather not have anything from them, but it’s closer in my time constraints at work. It was straberry (some puddley lookin stuff), a Real banana, protein and fiber powder. But it was like $5. The salad I got for dinner was $10. Maybe I shoulda got that soup, but I didn’t know I was going to be 124 under – but the soup would be 300calories or something…. What else…. OH, some of the stuff I eat are local products. Local yogurt, local nut n seed bar, etc. I have NO idea how many calories etc is in each thing. And there’s no place to manually input numbers.

And I had to build my cobb salad from scratch, so I may be under still. The program HAS a cobb salad, but no place to edit, and remove the bacon and chicken. So, so much for that.

But I’m doin my best. We’ll see what comes of it.

***************

Right… so I totally couldnt eat all of that. I managed everything on my plan but the yogurt. Barely made the salad and the kasha bar. Maybe… there’s a better way to get my calories???? Like a higher-calorie smoothie??

I dunno.

I am going to share my number 1 favourite fat loss lunch recipe that fits perfectly into a healthy eating regime.

The quantity sprecified is what I make for myself. It’s fine for men, women should reduce the quantity of everything by around 1/4.

Ingredients;

3 Medium Eggs
75g Chicken
1/2 tomato

1/2 Small Onion
Salt
Pepper

It’s really that simple. I’m not going to write a recipe of you to cook the omelet, I’m no chef!

It’s a perfect high protein, low fat, low carb lunch.

Some of you may have noticed, Mr Fantastic and I were not the best of friends. What you may not have known is that we had an understanding. You see, underneath it all, we loved each other. We mocked each others faults. I couldn’t count how many times I ran to the cube crying after she made a comment about my foot feathers but in my heart of hearts I knew she didn’t mean it.

A week ago something terrible happened. I turned around for just a moment and when I looked back Mr Fantastic was on the floor. I couldn’t say what had happened but it was clear she had passed. Oscar and Dave reacted badly and pecked the body until they were covered in blood. Their reaction to the grief sickened me so I pecked back.

Over the next few days we were at war until the big chicken stepped in. She stopped them from pecking and laid Mr Fantastic to rest under a spectacular new tree. Rest in peace my dear friend, you will be sorely missed.

I tested out a new cake recipe yesterday, as the title says, it was yoghurt cake. The recipe is ori

I tested out a new cake recipe yesterday, as the title says, it was yoghurt cake. The recipe is originally from the Nigella Lawson site here, but I came across it on the Omlet Forum here.

It was really easy to make as you use the yoghurt carton for measuring all the other ingredients. I used a strawberry flavour yoghurt, and even though other people had said you couldn’t taste the flavour once it was made, I could definitely still smell and taste the strawberry.

I did have a bit of a problem in the baking though, it was really brown but the inside was still runny, in the end I had to cover it with tin foil and leave it for another 10 minutes, which worked. If I make it again I think I’ll cover it from the start then take the foil off for the last 10 minutes or so to brown up.

It did taste really nice, I took it to my mum and dad’s in the afternoon and everyone enjoyed it. Think I’ll experiment with different flavour yoghurt, mum and I think it’d be nice made with a nutty one. As hubby didn’t get a slice yesterday, I left it all at mum’s, he’ll just have to have a virtual slice from the piccie above, a lot less fattening as he says he wants to lose 2 stone.

I hate it when other chickens stare at me. I always wait at the back of the line at the water pipe and I’m never first out of the cube in the morning. So why does the big chicken have to keep telling everyone about us?

First this stupid twitter business and now she’s written a whole article about us for Poultry Keeper. Seriously, what is she thinking?!

The fluffy one walked past me this morning and I could tell she thought we had changed.

Now everyone is going to know about my foot feathers and will start judging me for my size. Tell me when this is all over – until then, I’m staying in the coup.

Well, I can finally say my dreams have come true! The giant chicken with no feathers has moved us into a chicken palace!

It all started this morning when I could hear the big ones clomping around and making a racket in the land filled with plants. They were moving strange green squares around and seemed to be building some kind of hut.

Eventually come afternoon, chickens started disappearing! First Stewy, then Bruno and even Pingu seemed to have vanished. When the big chicken with no feathers came and carried me away all the pieces of straw started to fall in place – we were moving!

Bruno has obviously claimed the credit, boasting that her endless bingo games have finally paid off, but I think the big chickens with no feathers must just like us a lot.

Anyway, gotta go, I’m aiming for first dibs on the nest box!

So, here’s the latest update from the coup. Rumour has it we might be moving. The big moving ball of fluff that doesn’t seem to like us says the big chickens are building us a palace! Hensington Palace! Who would have thought it?

The fluffy one

The news has certainly ruffled a few feathers! Pingu and Stewy have been fighting over who gets dibs on the new nest box and Bruno keeps moaning about her foot feathers getting dirty. All the drama confused Mr Fantastic so much she walked straight into a wall!

In other news, the magical tube that the water comes from stopped working for a whole hour yesterday. Fajhita totally freaked out and kicked Bruno, then Bruno flapped around screaming and complaining which upset Captain Jack Sparrow.
