This allows for a lot of interspersed stories with characters not even shown or barely seen in those movies. This gives undeniable credence to the planned live action series because the groundwork is purely coming into play. “Menace Revealed” in Omnibus form shows the different perceptions of what “villain” can mean from a certain point of view.

Star Wars Omnibus: Menace Revealed The aspect of this collection is to permeate that which we can see which borders “A New Hope” and “Empire” and the breathe of the second two prequels. The first story “Starcrash” involves a Padewan who is not quite up to snuff yet. He ends up on a “Hitchhiker” drudge-ridden world where a princess is about to have a really bad marriage of convenience. He helps her get out of it but he is not big enough to fill his shoes. “Hearts Of Fire” follows a young Jedi who passes in a remembrance of her former master. “The Hunt For Aurra Sing” follows a character seen in “Clone Wars” who has a mean streak. Here we get to see her teacher and a primarily conflicted Padewan deal with a property deal gone bad. The Padewan loses control and almost kills her. He realizes his folly but almost relinquishes control of his emotions. “Jedi Quest” follows a younger Obi Wan and Anakin before we see them in “Clones”. Anakin, on a outlying planet with Obi Wan, sees a vision of Darth Maul who foretells his fall to the Dark Side. After this unnerving perception and the creation of his first lightsaber, the Padewan and his master are sent on a mission to take down a murdering smuggler Kradyn who ultimately works for the Hutts. Anakin is captured by a mercenary (who is also a undercover Jedi). Obi Wan is able to traverse back into the hold with disguise as the young Anakin leads a rebellion. After Obi Wan rescues some of the pslaves, Anakin faces off with Kradyn and kills him in cold blood boding well for his later betrayal. The image of rage in the rain perfectly balances Anakin’s defeat on the volcano planet some time later.

“Jango Fett” shows some of the background of the infamous bounty hunter. He is recruited for a signficant artifact retrieval to an employer he doesn’t know but for which he is paid double. The object turns out to be guarded by a Force Creature. The female bounty hunter (Zam Wessell) that helped him in “Clones” pulls a Belloq. It turns out that the anonymous buyer is a Dark Lord. Jango returns home and spends some quality time with Boba who always wonders why his father has to leave. “Zam Wessell” seems to have a thing for Jango Fettt even if she is a shape shifter (which we saw when she died in “Attack Of The Clones”). That much is certain. But she also seems to have a conscience against her better judgment. She gets Jango in the hay which is also one of her intents. Zam wants to get back the piece Jango stole. A lanky Jedi with mind control powers is on the case as well down in the bowels of Coruscant City, like something out of “The 5th Element” The final battle shows Fett helping with the aspect of good unlike later in “Clones” when Zam dies.

“Bounty Hunter: Aurra Sing” has the evil woman tracking down a Jedi turned bad. The angle of self reflexiveness works here showing both the craft of the writing but also the ability to come back to the good side of the Force. “Poison Moon” follows Anakin and Obi Wan where the young Padewan gets caught in the grips of a dark side element and is again spared. Maybe they see something in him. Briefing and the print is a bit smaller here which dictates something else. “Starfighter – Crossroads” is the most comprehensive of the stories in this volume in the progression of a stand alone because the lead Rym, like a buff version of the captain of the ghost boat in “Pirates Of The Carribean”, has a great essence to him like an “Indiana Jones Of The Sea” without morals. He seems to have more dexterity than the Jedi but does not do more damage than he needs to. In that way, he is like an amphibian version of Han Solo. “Full Of Surprises” takes a similar approach to “Clones” in terms of an asteroid altercation with Jango Fett but this time it is before an aspect with Boba. Jango narrowly escapes because this time Obi Wan has the upper hand. “Most Deadly Weapon” takes place right between the end of the Dooku/Yoda battle on Genonosis. The Count believes that Skywalker is a power to be reckoned with and will mention it to Lord Sidious when he returns. It is like a little easter egg that is added to the proceedings.“Practice Makes Perfect” shows the element of Anakin taking part in the trials to become a full Jedi. He masters his tests easily but Master Windu is wary of his overconfidence. “Machines Of War” examines the Clones confidence compared to the Jedi way. Yoda admits that they are powerful and wonders if it might cause them problems down the road which is self fulfilling.

“Star Wars Omnibus: Menace Revealed” helps clarify a lot of the relationships we have grown to criticize over the prequel trilogy. It works especially in the element of Jango Fett and Zam Wessell whom we see in “Attack Of The Clones” in allowing them to have a full arc which could not be seen on screen. By comparison, the volume also offers a greater psychological view into Anakin’s psyche in showing that his mind was unraveling from the beginning if these elements are to be taken as canon. As a result, this collection is riveting at times in its use of essential story points.

Stamane, nel corso della trasmissione televisiva Omnibus, il giornalista Alessandro Gilioli  dell’Espresso avrebbe dato del pagliaccio al Presidente del Consiglio  Silvio Berlusconi. Il governatore del veneto, ancora per poco, Giancarlo Galan, ha commentato la cosa dicendo “Di sicuro ci sono giudici sia a Roma che a Milano, ma per il momento mi limito a segnalare il fatto a qualche valente avvocato». In una nota poi l’intrepido governatore ha affermato: “Dispiace che ciò sia accaduto nello spazio di una trasmissione televisiva tra le più interessanti e corrette, ma che in un caso del genere non si è dimostrata in grado di distinguersi da un Gilioli qualunque».

Premesso che Gilioli ha detto che all’estero pensano che Berlusconi sia un pagliaccio, che è cosa ben diversa, personalmente mi dichiaro soddisfatto e contento perché un giornalista va per televisione  e dice qualcosa che nessuno ha più il coraggio di dire.

 Galan potrebbe suggerire ai magistrati che si interessano del caso Cosentino di smettere di indagare su quel poveretto ed aprire un’inchiesta su Gilioli, sicuramente pagato da una potenza straniera per diffamare il nostro beneamato Presidente del Consiglio. ……….Ma per piacere!

Qualcuno pensa, oggi, in questa Italia, che la maleducazione sia aumentata, e la cerca e la critica nella massa mentre gli sfugge se la vede in tv, come se la tv fosse un mezzo che racconta una finzione e non la realtà. Oltre la maleducazione che è una forma di espressione dell’individuo c’è il contenuto. Il contenuto che questi ragazzi contestano con maleducazione e disobbedienza è condannabile. La scuola Gandhi secondo il Tar va riaperta e l’amministrazione Moratti dovrebbe far appello al Consiglio di Stato se non vuole riaprirla, permettendo nel frattempo ai ragazzi di frequentare le lezioni serali.

La nota decisamente umoristica è che la Moratti in questo video in cui si applica a recitare Lincoln Portrai di Copland sta vivendo una sorta di esperimento ioneschiano inconsapevole, un teatro dell’assurdo in cui lei con una pronuncia sillabizzante e neniosa interpreta Abraham Lincoln

Il Discorso di Gettysburg (Gettysburg Address in lingua inglese) è il breve, ma memorabile discorso pronunciato da Abramo Lincoln il 19 novembre 1863 alla cerimonia di inaugurazione del cimitero militare di Gettysburg (oggi il Gettysburg National Cemetery), dopo soli 4 mesi dall’epica e sanguinosa Battaglia di Gettysburg. Il pensiero di Lincoln è rivolto allo sforzo della nazione nella guerra civile, ma con l’ideale che a Gettysburg nessun soldato, dell’Unione o della Confederazione, del nord o del sud, era morto invano. Esso rappresenta una pietra miliare, un indirizzo appunto, nella costruzione della futura nazione americana

Una parziale ma onesta dimostrazione che definisce la lontananza di azioni individuali e fatti pubblici: la Moratti se ne frega delle contestazioni ma recita algidamente delle parole e dei valori a cui in realtà non dà nessun peso e che la rappresentano come un’adoratrice di apparenza in luogo pubblico.

Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10) has come out now, and I’m still getting 70 hits a week on my original article concerning PulseAudio.  The situation has changed radically, and so that people will get correct information concerning it, I felt it necessary to revise my previous findings.

PulseAudio can no longer be killed off in favor of Alsa.  Karmic Koala has so tied up and dumbed down the situation that killing off PulseAudio will kill off ALL sound.  Not only that, but there is no way to cause the system sounds (window open/close, button press, etc) to work right.  An additional factor is that you are apt to have a heart attack when changing from one user to another due to the HIGH volume level of the alert sound for the new login screen.  The only way I’ve found to fix this is to kill off ALL system sounds.

I will say this in favor of PulseAudio, the sound has improved some.  Only some.  It’s now recognizing my sound card to a certain degree.  It even acknowledges that it is capable of 5.1 sound.  Now for the down side.  What it pumps out is still, overall monaural sound.  In addition, to get it to even recognize the abilities of my sound card I ended up going to 2 or 3 places, including downloading and installing the PulseAudio Device chooser.  And it’s still relying on Alsa to provide the information.  In other words, PulseAudio is simply another layer on top of what’s already there, and making use of what’s already there, without adding significant benefit for being there.

In short, though the situation has improved somewhat, it’s still not good – not acceptable.  This leaves me in a dilemma.  Do I accept this dumbed down, Windows-ized version of a release that is supposed to “just work” (and I can’t tell you what it “just works” like in a family friendly blog), or do I start looking for alternatives?  Were I to seek another distribution, then I wouldn’t be honest with myself or others by continuing to advocate Ubuntu.  And there is my dilemma.  I’m a member of the Arizona LoCo, an Ubuntu community member, and editor of the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter, an editor of  the Fridge, an administrator for 3 news lists (primarily to kill off spam as requested by the software operating the lists), as well as member of and sometime contributor to a number of other projects.  If I stop using Ubuntu because of problems, and stop advocating Ubuntu because of it, then in all honesty I would feel that I should withdraw from all of them.  That’s something I’d rather not do, as it would leave people – friends – somewhat in the lurch.

One of the things that Linux is supposed to be about is choice:  the ability to choose what one wants to do and what one wants to use.  PulseAudio may be good for combining sound input for output over a network, but I don’t do that.  I don’t feel compelled to subject others to the type and style of music that I happen to enjoy.  I don’t feel that it’s my place to make music listening choices for other people as my particular whim takes me.  Even within an individual family, people have differing musical interests.  Why should I subject them to mine, all over the apartment, simply because I want to listen to something but am not at my computer.  No, that kind of thinking makes no sense.  They have the right to choose for themselves, too.

Yet the developers and MOTUs (Masters of the Universe) have determined that I MUST have this additional layer, whether I want or need it, or not.  And that it will be dumbed down to the point of being unable to be configured to MY needs and wants.  Worse still is the fact that it’s applied without my choice, and removes my ability to choose whether or not to use it.  This is unacceptable.

Now, before a bunch of developers and MOTUs decide to flame me (as has been done before when I voiced my opinion), I will make something plain that they should understand.  THIS IS MY CHOICE TO MAKE!  I put up with the abuse before.  But not again.  I will not accept abusive comments to this blog – they will be moderated out.  If you cannot accept that it is my choice to make – if you are so dictatorial that you insist the my choice is invalid – then you have failed to read and understand  what I have said, and failed to comprehend my feelings.  Therefore, telling me that I’m wrong and PulseAudio is the best thing since sliced bread, or any other such drivel, will be removed from the comments to this blog.  If you have a valid work-around to the problem, then create a patch and pass it up to the repositories.  I’ve tried too many work-arounds that didn’t work to be bothered with trying any more.  Nor will I listen to any more “oh, it’ll get better”.  You’ve had at least 3 releases to make it better, with no significant improvement, and (in fact) some regression.

So, here is the choice I’m faced with.  Either PulseAudio will improve to the point where I can make my own choices (including being able to choose whether or not to apply it), or I will have to look for another distribution.  If I end up choosing to go with another distribution, then I will (due to my own conscience) feel compelled to remove myself from the Ubuntu community in all aspects.

I have no problem with making such a choice.  I will feel no angst over choosing another distribution.  I will feel some sense of loss over leaving friends that I have made over the course of my involvement with Ubuntu.  But, at 64 years of age, I’ve had to leave friends and even family before.  I’ve learned how to deal with that.  I will feel that I’m letting some of them down, due to the type of involvement I have with various aspects of the Ubuntu community.  But that isn’t enough to affect the basic choice: will I be dictated to in my choices, or will I have the freedom to make my own decisions?

So, I offer you the developers and MOTUs of Ubuntu and those involved with PulseAudio an opportunity.  Clean this mess up and restore that freedom.  Don’t talk about it.  Actions speak louder than words.  Just do it.  I’ll wait for a little while (not forever) to see what develops.  But there is a deadline.  If this continues into the next release (Ubuntu 10.04), then I will find somewhere else to go.  I won’t blame you.  I’ll just leave.  You will have made your choices, and I will make mine.

Probezeitverkürzung in München

Als Fahranfänger in Bayern könnt ihr die Probezeit mit der freiwilligen „Fortbildung zur Probezeitverkürzung“ um ein volles Jahr verkürzen. Es ist egal, ob ihr die reguläre zweijährige Probezeit habt oder wegen Felverhaltens am Steuer vier Jahre schwitzen müsst.

Der Aufbaukurs umfasst drei 90-Minütige Gruppensitzungen, eine Übungs- und Beobachtungsfahrt im Straßenverkehr mit dem Fahrleiter und weiteren Teilnehmern und 4 Stunden praktische Sicherheitsübungen auf einem Sicherheitstrainingsplatz.

Mit dem Aufbauseminar, das 6 Monate nach Abschluss der Führerscheinprüfung der Klasse B angetreten werden kann, soll die Fahrpraxis vertieft und vor allem auf ungewöhnliche Situationen im Straßenverkehr aufmerksam gemacht werden.

Era chiaro e prevedibile (…  tanto va la gatta al lardo che…  ); questa legislazione, che pur sembrava nata sotto i migliori auspici, ha manifestato quasi subito i sintomi dei mali che ne avrebbero causato l’inevitabile avvelenamento : odio ed interessi personali al di sopra di tutto e di tutti. E purtroppo per noi cittadini diventa sempre più difficile capire questa politica  decadente, perché orfana della sua credibilità deceduta con tangentopoli e mai più risorta. Sì, i nostri politici assomigliano ormai, nel sostegno dei propri ruoli, a  guitti interpreti di un teatro ancor più decadente… Un anno fa, agli albori di questo blog, mentre già la battaglia infuriava fuori e dentro il parlamento, decisi di scrivere un post che vi ripropongo ora tale e quale, tristemente tale e quale,come se il tempo si fosse fermato e nulla migliorato, anzi!

Appropriations experts interviewed by The Hill are predicting the Senate will repackage the remaining appropriations bills into one omnibus appropriations to meet the Dec. 18th Continuing Resolution appropriations deadline.  Only 5 out of the 12 appropriations bills are completely finished and signed by the President although three other appropriations – Commerce/Justice/Science, Transportation/HUD, and Defense – have passed the Senate and are awaiting conference.  Four remaining Appropriations Bills need to be debated in the Senate with the Military/Veterans Appropriations currently enjoying Senate floor time right now.  This is only a prediction by Appropriations watchers, but given the time constraints as well as the time needed to debate health care reform and other pressing matters, I wholeheartedly endorse an FY 2010 omnibus appropriations bill.  Omnibus Assemble!

After reading On the Incarnation by St. Athanasius,  I was struck by how much I don’t know.  It seems that this is frequently the case since I started taking Omnibus.  Athanasius was a great man of the faith and was able to explain difficult theological truths in a simple way, unlike books written about his works.

On the Incarnation was an eye-opener in many ways.  I had never heard of the divine dilemma before.  That God couldn’t not just demand repentance for our rebellion, nor could He just totally wipe man out.  Either way it would have been a slight on His justice or His mercy and He would no longer be God, Ruler of all.  Then we see that the Son of God recognized the divine dilemma and was born into a humble birth to recreate man whom He had already created.  Not only that but He still had control over all He created even as He was born.  Jesus caused the star to announce His birth as it was occurring.

In Christ’s death and resurrection we see that He triumphs over death and that all who follow Him are no longer afraid of death.  In the account’s of the martyrs written by Eusebius in The Church History, it is clearly shown that all those who had faith in Christ Jesus went to their death, no matter how horrible, willingly and they stood fast in the Truth they believed in.  This Truth has not changed and believers today who are being persecuted still show the same tenacity in the face of death.  Hosea spoke of Christ’s power over death long before Jesus was even born.  “I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death.  O Death, I will be your plagues!  O Grave, I will be your destruction! Pity is hidden from My eyes.”  Praise God that Jesus took my penalty and took it on Himself and freed me from death and raised me to life.

Throughout this book I have been continuously reminded of the divine dilemma, with which man created during his plunge into Sin, and the perfect solution to this given problem, the incarnation, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This amazes me every time I think about how God gives mercy while being just at the same time. The vast love of God for His creation makes me realize how undeserving I am of every breath I inhale and every word I speak, even those spoken with evil intentions.

This book is perfect for anyone who is struggling with the idea that has been thrust upon them that God must not exist since evil exists. The argument created surrounding this idea is that Since God is all-good and all-powerful, He would want and be able to destroy evil. Yet evil still exists, therefore, God does not exist. This may seem like a valid argument, yet it is not sound. The premise, that If God is all good, He must, then, want to destroy evil, is faulty. The premise assumes that God MUST destroy evil now if He is really all good. This, in part, is true. God will rid the world of evil EVENTUALLY. This may be today, tomorrow, or in a thousand years. He does not, however, HAVE to destroy it at this moment. In His Justice, He may allow evil to continue in order to convict sinners of their fallen state, or punish evildoers, or even release some of His chosen from this fallen world.

Those who say that God cannot exist since evil exists fail to realize that evil is like darkness; it is merely existence without light, or God. They, then, fail to see that If God did not exist, good could not exist and, therefore, evil could not exist. It is a self-refuting statement.

Also, if God didn’t exist, evil would be all-encompassing and there would be absolutely no good. Yet this is obviously not true, for, we see good everyday.

The argument of God’s existence is a very grim outlook, yet has sadly overtaken most of culture, hence, Atheism has grown to immense proportions, leading to the current state of man and the judgements now being poured out upon him as we see in the world today, the judgements that are the carrying out of the sins man chose, apartness from God; therefore choosing evil.

Who would think that a book written by a man in the 300s would affect anything today? Yet is has. On the Incarnation by Athanasius is a little book that discussing the major importance of Christ’s literal Incarnation on this earth. Having read it for the second time, I found that I better understood what Athanasius meant by the “Divine Dilemma” and how Christ solved it. This time around, I got a better picture of Christ as the Creator and Savior of the world.

Athanasius also includes many arguments for the validity of Christ’s Incarnation and gives our modern world a new perspective on history in relation to why Christ came. Athanasius seemed to understand that all of history flows together seamlessly, so that Christ was born at exactly the right moment in time. Even though I know some history, I do not yet know the flow of history, so I often struggle to link historical events with the reason for them. Reading someone not far removed from those days is refreshing.

I could also sense the humility with which Athanasius wrote. This man, who grew up under harsh Roman occupation and even faced numerous threats of martyrdom, had every reason to say, “Listen to me, I’m holy.” But he didn’t. Instead, he provided logical arguments for his defense of the Trinity, and many of those arguments are still being used. Because of his humility, God has lifted him high and made his writing a go-to book for all things Nativity.

I would recommend On the Incarnation to anyone who wants to be awed at God’s perfect timing and plan. If you want a Scriptural defense of Christ’s Lordship, this is the place to go. This is one of those books that is easy to understand, but whose implications will leave you pondering. Each time I’ve read this book, I have been amazed anew at God’s love. The next time I pick it up, I am sure I will glean even more.

Motorrad-Führerschein bei Theorie + Praxis in 80803 München-Schwabing und 81675 München-Haidhausen

Wer möchte nicht auf einem heißen Feuerstuhl auf große Motorradtour gehen und als cooler Biker die Freiheit auf zwei Rädern genießen?

Eine Zweiradausbildung bei der richtigen Fahrschule führt einen schnell und sicher zum Motorradführerschein. So kann man bald mit dem Mofa, Moped oder großen Motorrad auf Achse gehen. Der gesetzlich vorgeschriebene Mindestumfang der Führerscheinausbildung umfasst sechzehn Theoriestunden zu je 90 Minuten und zwölf praktische Fahrstunden zu je 45 Minuten auf Bundes- oder Landstraßen, auf der Autobahn und bei Dämmerung. Die Voraussetzung für die Zulassung zur praktischen Fahrprüfung ist das Bestehen der Theorieprüfung. Außerdem sind für die Anmeldung bei der Behörde ein Sehtest und das Besuchen eines Erste-Hilfe-Kurses erforderlich.

Das eigentliche Ziel all dieser gesetzlichen Vorschriften ist es, dass alle Verkehrsteilnehmer durch kompetentes und verantwortungsvolles Verhalten zur Sicherheit im Straßenverkehr beitragen. The following presentation was made in Ubuntu Open Week, Monday, November 2, 2009, at 17:00 UTC.  The classroom session is closed, now, but I’m still willing to answer what questions I can, here:

My name is Craig Eddy – known as Tyche in IRC and in the Ubuntu community – and I am an editor for the UWN.  And in the past few weeks people have asked me various questions about the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter.

Some of them have been of the nature of, “I told you about it in channel, why can’t you put it in the UWN?”

Others have been, “can I contribute to the UWN?”  And there have been others.

I’d like to address some of the questions by explaining the fondation of the Newsletter, and how it gets put together.  Along the way I’ll be describing some of what actually goes on in the process.

As I go through this presentation questions may arise.  Please, open a text editor (not a word processor) and type your questions in there.  Preceed your question with the word QUESTION to gain a moderator’s attention.  At the end of the presentations, you can then copy them into #ubuntu-classroom-chat, and I’ll do my best to answer them.

This presentation will be repeated on my blog, http://tycheent.wordpress.com/, which is also attached to the Planet Ubuntu.  So if I couldn’t get to your answer in channel feel free to comment there and I’ll try to answer it.

The UWN is, and has been from the beginning, a way of letting the community know what’s going on.  Sometimes within the community as a whole.  Sometimes as noting what’s being said about Ubuntu from the outside.

The first issue of the UWN came out in June of 2006, and a basic structure to the Newsletter.  General Community News, a section called “Ubuntu” that gave release information, and an In The Press section.

But, along with that structure were the beginnings of how to go about putting the Newsletter together.  And thus was born journalism in an on-line Newsletter.

Structure is important.  And between Issue #1 and Issue #166 the structure has changed (hopefully for the better) many times.

Each change in the structure involved “executive decisions”, and discussion with others about whether they were worthwhile and how to go about adding them.

Now, we have the General Community News, that has incorporated the Ubuntu section.  The Ubuntu Stats, that give figures on Bugs, Translations and, recently added, Ubuntu Brainstorm Top 5 for the week.

We also have LoCo News, that celebrates upcoming and just past events.  Also Launchpad News that tells of changes to our all important Launchpad server and sites.

We have the Ubuntu Forms News that adds information on Tutorials and other ongoing information.  We have The Planet that lets people know what other things of interest are happening with individuals.

In The Press is still there, but the format has changed over time to provide a summary or “teaser” to the article to which it is linked.

In The Blogosphere outlines what other individual’s opinions of Ubuntu are.  And In Other News covers information that doesn’t fit the preceeding two categories.

We also have a Meeting Summaries section that outlines what has happened in groups in the past month.  Information taken from that submitted by the various Teams and Councils.

And then, there’s the two that are the most tedious to do:  Upcoming Meetings and Events, and Updates and Security.  The first gives the information on meetings in the #ubuntu-meetings channel on irc.freenode.net.  The second lists all the posted updates – both those that are security updates and those that are applied to individual releases.

Also recently added is the Glossary of Terms where some of thos nasty little acronyms that the average person might not know are defined.

Also added to the structure of the UWN are the Credits, so you know who to blame for what’s in any particular issue.  Hee hee.

Structure is all very well.  But just like having a bunch of boards organized into a house doesn’t make it a lived-in home, so this structure needs something else to actually BE the UWN.

It’s traditionally been the job of the newest recruit to visit the many links for the Security and Updates section and do the dull, tedious work of gathering that information.  And when a Beta is released, that can be a daunting task.  As an example, when Karmic Koala Beta was released there were 244 updates between the release date and the date of the UWN.

Fortunately, that task, that used to be done manually, has now been automated with a script (actually a series of scripts, one for each sub-section of the Security and Updates section.

Likewise, the Upcoming Meetings section, originally gathered from a calendar within the Fridge, was much more difficult to deal with than its more recent Google calendar, both in gathering information and in posting it.

With the original calendar, the “repeating events” had to be manually posted to the Fridge.  With the Google calendar, those repeating events are taken care of with one posting.  Also, there are shortcuts that can be put in so that half the information can just be copied and pasted from the calendar to the UWN.

Other sections, like the Forums News and the Brainstorm Stats are entered directly by specialized contributors (and we, who constitute the core group in the UWN REALLY appreciate their efforts and help).

One of our editors, and our Chief Editor, have RSS feeds from various sources from which the links for In The Press, In The Blogosphere and In Other News are gathered.  Likewise, General Community News, LoCo News, Launchpad News, and The Planet are gathered from links within the Ubuntu community.

And now the killer piece of information that causes the chaos of creating the UWN.  ALL of that is left as long as possible to make the information we put in the UWN as up-to-date as possible.

When one has three to six people all trying to edit one page at the same time things get interesting.  In channel, one can see people saying things like, “Well, when SOMEONE finally lets me in, I’ll dump my section in.  Hee hee”

Good natured teasing, like that, helps us keep sane.  Some elements can be put in early, like the Forums (I’ve yet to tangle with Isabelle Duchatelle as she does her part), and the Security and Updates (Liraz Siri, partly due to the difference in time zones, always manages to get his section in before the chaos starts).

But that still leaves a bunch of sections to go in, all at the same time.  The way we manage to do it is to compose our sections in text files (with all the wiki formatting) so that all we have to do is cut and paste to actually dump it in the page.

A template was developed, to keep everyone on the “same page” for formatting.  That way, we can reduce the number of camelcases (wiki hot links, like LoCo) that we have to go and change in the actual wiki page.

But that still leaves us with situations where 2 or 3 people are trying to edit the page at the same time (thank goodness for locks).  And, on top of that, we’re correcting eachother’s spelling and grammer, and making decisions on whether or not to dump a particular link.

If we were trying to edit directly into the page, rather than the cut-and-paste method we use, the chaos would be worse.  As it is, the chatter in channel can get “interesting”.  And all this while trying to beat a deadline to get the issue out.

In addition, the chaos of the channel serves another two purposes.  The humor we insert helps to relieve the tensions of trying to beat the deadline.  And the somewhat social aspect of the channel allows us to interact, perhaps to change a style or correct a formatting “on-the-fly”.

But even more important, it allows us to proof-read eachother’s work to make the issue as good as we can get it.  Mistakes DO get through, but we honestly try to keep them to a minimum.

So, for 2 or 3 hours on a Sunday, the editors and contributors go through organized chaos to put something out that will inform and entertain you readers.

Contributions are essential to the UWN.  Without them the issues would be bland rehashing of information that’s already available to the community.

New contributions – those outside our normal sources for information – need to follow the same structure that is set up for all the rest of the summaries.  There has to be a link that we can point to, so that readers can find out more information or even check to see if we actually summarized it properly.

This reliance on hard links to put in each issue is important to us, as it keeps us honest.  You may notice that we don’t editorialize in the UWN.  We’re trying very hard to NOT offer our opinion, but just state the facts as we find them.  This is the essence of journalism as it pertains to the UWN, and the one place where YOU can help us.

If you have information that you want to share with the community, GREAT!  But . . . we need it to be YOUR information, not our “opinion” of what you may have said in channel or in an email.  We need that hard link to point to.  This seems to be the hardest thing for me to get people to understand about the UWN.

Also, it helps if the information you supply, on a blog link or where ever, gives us enough information so that we CAN summarize it in an intelligent fashion.  Remember, we can’t know all the information YOU know about a subject.  If you like, you can run your ideas by me, and I’ll happily help you build something that will be interesting and informative, from which we can draw our summary.

Is it a new program?  What does it do?  How does it differ from other, similar programs?

Is it an event?  Where will it be held?  What is the focus of the event?  What is the target audience?  Who is helping out with the event?  What, if any, companies or organizations are involved?

One other point:  there is a difference between named contributors (people named in the Credits section) and editors of the UWN.  It’s not a prestige thing, believe it or not.  It’s based on ability.  New “named” contributors are given a specific task to complete.  They may also do some proofing, but primarily they are set to complete one particular task at a time.

As they grow into working on the UWN, those tasks change to more complex tasks until they are able to handle anything that the UWN may throw at them.  At that point, they become editors.  Editors are the “clean-up hitters”, the ones fill in for others that happen to be unavailable in any particular week.

They also have more say in the editing of the UWN, based on their experience, and their viewpoint is valuable.  We encourage people to work their way through the tasks, so they CAN help out.  The more eyes and hands we have, the better the UWN runs, and the more fun with it we can have.

Despite all that I’ve just told you, the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter isn’t OUR newsletter.  It’s YOUR’S.  The information that makes up the bulk of the newsletter comes from  you.  Every entry in the Upcoming Meetings and Events is something that YOU have added to the Fridge calendar.  All the Meeting Summaries, all the Security and Updates, and much more, come from YOU.

Our purpose is to document them in a way that reaches beyond the range of your particular circles of influence.  Our purpose is to celebrate the advances you make, the achievements you accomplish, and yes even the setbacks you experience.  And for that we need your help.

There are procedures you can follow . . . oh, nothing difficult . . . that will make it easier for us and better for you.  Little things, like providing a link for the agenda of your meetings to the Fridge calendar, or making sure that security updates and release updates are documented where they need to be.

Another way you can help is to make sure you write up whatever events, new programs, or etcetera in a blog article or some format that we can link to.  This way, what’s reported is what YOU want known, and not some vague opinion.  We who edit the UWN have had to scramble on a few occasions to get such links, and people haven’t understood why.  The “why” is simple.  It keeps US honest in our reporting, and presents the facts that YOU want reported.

Casual, “one-off” contributions are always welcome.  You can let us know in the #ubuntu-news channel or in an email to the list – ubuntu-news-team@lists.ubuntu.com.  Be sure to include a link to where the information actually is, so we can add it to the UWN.  By the way, feedback about the UWN can also be addressed through the same means.  We like constructive criticism (and, of course, we ALWAYS like to hear compliments.  Hee hee).

Right now, we have a pretty good balance of people helping put the UWN together.  However, there are times when we do need more help.  If you are interested in being listed as a contributor (one that does the nuts and bolts, tedious and hectic, work of putting the UWN together, contact us in the #ubuntu-news channel.  We’ll gladly talk to you about it.

Now that I’ve blathered on for what seems like forever, here’s your chance to ask questions that I may not have covered in the presentation.

[QUESTION]: on what basis do you decide ubuntu news/blogs is relevant ?

Mostly, we look to see if it’s Ubuntu related, and provides INFORMATION.  Information may be positive or negative, as long as it’s not just “selling” or FUD.

[QUESTION]: Does the newsletter have a mailing list or is it just RSS feed?

While I answered this in the channel, I’ve since stumbled on further information.  The newsletter is posted to the ubuntu-news mailing list as well as being up on the wiki at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Current?action=show

[QUESTION]: how about translations into other languages?

We’re always looking for people or groups to translate the newsletter.  We have some who do and/or take information from the newsletter to add to their own.  But the core group doesn’t have any translators in it.

[QUESTION]: Have you considered asking people to write a piece for you to link to? If you want to know about a certain issue I’m sure some people would knock up a reasonable piece for you.

We’ve had people come to us and say “hey, how about . . .” then worked with them to develop a web page we could link to, so we could add their article to the UWN.  There have also been times when we’ve requested information from people.  But, I repeat, we rely on hard links – something someone else has  written up, not our opinion.

[QUESTION]: i would like to know how non-english versions of UWN are made and how to contribute. thanks.

Non-English versions are done by the translators.  Some of them simply take portions of the UWN and add them to their own newsletter, and you’d have to ask them how to contribute to those.  Others translate the whole thing (a daunting task, from my opinion), in which case the contribution would have to be in the UWN, itself.

[QUESTION] applications will need to be added in order to to use the scripts?  where are they found? and how much technical experience does one need?

I’m not sure I understand the question about adding applications in order to use the scripts.  If you mean the ones we use for Security and Updates, it’s BeautifulSoup – a python module – and is in the repos.  BeautifulSoup is a module that is needed to use the Security and Updates scripts.  Since I didn’t create the python scripts we use, I can’t really tell you what it does.  The scripts were created by a previous Chief Editor (Thanks, boredandblogging).  I’m just a user.

One thing I’ll mention about the socialization aspects of the UWN.  It helps to keep us on the same page with changes, and to be able to interact with eachother – offering suggestions and making corrections.  It’s as much an important part of the UWN as the links we go to for information.

Back a bit, the question was raised about asking other people for information.  Actually, we have had some interviews, but dropped out of it, since others were doing a much better job of it than we could, and they graciously provided hard links for us to go to.  The only time that I know of when we did something special on our own was with Issue 100, when we ran interviews by Skype with Mark Shuttleworth and previous contributors/editors of the UWN.  I not only took part in that, but ended up transcribing both interviews, so we’d have as much hard information available as possible.  THAT was DEFINITELY a chaos weekend.  Hee hee

At that point, due to net-splits and/or lag and/or ISP problems I suggested that the session be terminated.  Since there was only 10 minutes left, it was agreed and a break was taken before the next session.  I want to thank all the people that attended as well as those that helped (thanks, Amber and Jorge) and those that asked questions.
