The Bluest Eye opens tomorrow today at USC. All flaws aside, including a screen that constantly projected unnecessary graphics I’m sure you’d easily find in your PC’s Default Pictures folder of landscapes and pink flowers and shit, the show featured some amazingly talented individuals that made me laugh, cry, and curse every time I’ve ever acted in ignorance. Basically it provoked thought, pity, and laughter, and was only a bore for a few short moments in the second act. And there’s a prolonged slow motion fight sequence you cannot miss.

Έχοντας επιβιώσει το κύμα αρρώστειας που έπεσε τώρα τελευτάια στο σχολείο και γενικά στην πόλη, έπεσα θύμα της απο το ίδιο το περιβάλλον μου, και πιο συγκεκριμένα, τον πατέρα μου! Τι σκατά!;

Το θέμα είναι ότι δεν την παλέυω έτσι! Να κάθομαι σε μια καρέκλα να βαριέμαι ή να προσπαθώ να κοιμηθώ! ΔΕΝ ΓΙΝΕΤΑΙ! Προτιμώ να πηγαίνω σχολείο και αγγλικά απ’το να μην κάνω απολύτως τίποτα!

While covering an editorial assignment last week, I had very little time to photograph Master Sommelier Gerard Basset at his hotel.  We needed a simple but classy looking portrait to feature in Lloyds magazine.

So,  because of the limited amount of time and the lack of a studio I had to improvise.  Easy right?

I brought along a piece of A1 black card, which I had my assistant to hold, placed behind a chair where Gerard was to sit. Right behind the chair I placed a strobe with a red gel pointing up at the card behind Gerard’s head. As for the main light, I had a strobe firing through a shoot through umbrella positioned 45 degrees off to the right. This all took less than one minute to set up.

Now who said you need  a 20×20ft backdrop and half a day?

One of the things I love so much about it is that, as wondeful as it sounds with a full band and two sweetly distorted electric guitars, it translates beautifully as an acoustic song. I’m working on a version of the latter and having a lot of fun with it.

I don’t really have a choice as to whether or not I will see this movie. I am bound to see it by my loyalty to all that is Rock & Roll, and I can’t frickin’ wait!

Last week I purchased the motorola droid. Overall all have been very happy with the phone. I also antcipate that I will begin posting on the go. As my blog posts will hopefully become more frequent and probably be more about my daily life….

Anyway we’ll see what happens and if I like my keyboard enough to post from it.

It always bugs me when federal holidays are not holidays for all.

Because I’m a state employee, I had the day off, I received no mail because the postal service had the day off, I could park for free downtown because the meter police had the day off, but all the stores were open because a lot of people did not have the day off.

It’s so ingrained in our culture that there are often big sales on holidays.

God forbid we should be on holiday and not be able to shop. That would be downright un-American!

“Eating healthy has been one of the big casualties of this economic downturn,” says Harry Balzer, chief industry analyst at NPD Group and author of the research firm’s annual “Eating Patterns in America” report. “Last year, consumers cut back on eating ‘better-for-you’ and organic foods.”

In an online survey this summer of 1,200 people about food affordability, conducted by food-industry research firm Technomic, 70% of respondents said healthier foods are increasingly difficult to afford.

“Value is what counts to consumers right now,” says Bob Goldin, executive vice president at Technomic. “And, unfortunately, in the minds of many consumers, a lot of these lower-priced options are just not as healthy, but they’re still buying them.”

Consumers are turning to more affordable grab-and-go alternatives such as chips, cookies, candy, snack wraps and mini-burgers in between meals — and often in lieu of a formal meal — according to a number of industry studies, including one by NPD Group.

Market-research firm Mintel sees double-digit sales gains in the U.S. this year for salty snacks, popcorn and cheese snacks. Potato-chip sales are on a path to increase 22% this year, compared with all of 2007, according to Mintel. Tortilla-chip sales are up 18%.

And as the struggling restaurant industry can attest, more consumers are eating at home. But that doesn’t mean they are making things from scratch. More people are microwaving frozen pizza or bringing home fast food, according to NPD Group.

“Approximately 20% of all meals prepared in our homes from 1990 to 2007 involved the use of a microwave,” says Mr. Balzer. But in 2008, microwave usage rose to 30%. NPD Group, which has been following the microwaving habits of American consumers for nearly two decades, attributes that gain to the troubled economy.

Not surprising, then, are the rising rates of obesity and diabetes. The obesity rate climbed more than one percentage point to 26.4% in September from a year earlier, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a measure of U.S. health compiled by the Gallup research firm and wellness-program provider Healthways.

Maclaren USA Recalls to Repair Strollers Following Fingertip Amputations

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Maclaren Strollers

Units: About one million

Distributor: Maclaren USA, Inc., of South Norwalk, Conn.

Hazard: The stroller’s hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States.

Description: This recall involves all Maclaren single and double umbrella strollers. The word “Maclaren” is printed on the stroller. The affected models included Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveller.

Sold at: Babies“R”Us, Target and other juvenile product and mass merchandise retailers nationwide from 1999 through November 2009 for between $100 and $360.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled strollers and contact Maclaren USA to receive a free repair kit.
