Two silly song videos. The first is a bunch of comedians, who look like they are just having fun, singing in the studio. The second is Jason Siegel making a guest appearance at a Swell Season (the guy and girl from Once) concert. I like that everyone is enjoying themselves and not taking it too seriously.

Tonight The Swell Season starts kicks off their US tour with a performance in Seattle. The Swell Season are Glen Hansard (from the Irish band, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist), both are known for their performance in Once, the 2007 music film from Ireland. The two were a couple and now they’re not but they’re still making beautiful music together.

Falling Slowly is one of those tunes you’ll hum for hours after you’ve heard it, mainly because of the repetitive melody, but also because it’s one of those “I could’ve written that” type of tunes. Want to learn it? Scroll down a bit on this page – Mario Ajero has a podcast lesson for you.

There are few more satisfying things in life than discovering two separate (and disparate) awesome things can combine together to form a single, even more awesome thing.

For every peanut butter and bubblegum letdown, there is a Jason Segal and Swell Season moment of clarity.

The freakishly tall Judd Apatow running mate is no stranger to music, having played a drummer in beloved television series Freaks and Geeks before penning a vampire musical in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. With puppets!

Segal recently hopped on stage with the once Once couple and sang a song that really cuts through a lot of the bullshit in today’s society. Who knew being honest could be so sweet? This song was in fact so incredible the crowd began singing along to the chorus. Did I mention the chorus was Segal’s phone number?

Perhaps Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard could learn a little about song writing from their non-special effects altered friend.

And no, I haven’t called 315-329-6673 yet, but please come back to report your results if you do.

 На мой взгляд в альбоме по большей части преобладает матал, нежели симфония. Не скажу, что это плохо. Пока слушаешь в “ Once” отрывки с “Бум-Бум, Бах-Бах”(думаю Вы меня поняли), а затем переход на спокойную симфонию – получается, что “переживаешь” моменты музыки. Я снял два балла за то, что есть песни, где переход с метала на симфонию не столь удачен или его просто нет.

 Сама музыка в “ Once” достаточно разнообразная. Здесь есть множество музыкальных инструментов, что радует слух. Были пару моментов, когда я слушал и пытался угадать, а что же дальше будет?

 Песни в “ Once” мне понравились. Слова поставленные в рифму и голоса поющих сделали свое дело.

 Общее впечатление от альбома “ Once” хорошее. Не могу сказать, что вернусь специально к нему и прослушаю еще раз, как я это делал с Omega Lithium – “Dreams In Formaline“. Но все же не жалею потраченного времени и если песни из “ Once” случайно попадутся, переключать их не стану.

Here’s how this happened… The band was at a restaurant in Los Angeles; drinking tea, when they were offered a bottle of wine by two celebrities. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. Now The Swell Season has been enjoying watching their “Freaks & Geeks” DVDs while on tour, so this was a nice coincidence. They became good acquaintances, so The Swell Season asked Jason Segel to be a surprise guest and sing a song.

The Swell Season is a musical duo formed by Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová who got together in the excellent 2007 film, Once.

There are two main views when it comes to the eternal security debate. The first view would be that of the eternal security view, which claims that once a Christian is saved, they are saved forever and there is nothing they can do to fall out of grace. On the other side of the spectrum there is the conditional security view, which claims that a Christian needs to continue to persist in God and move forward in their faith. In other words, the conditional view is more works oriented and biased towards Christians, while the eternal view is more of a simple faith ordeal. It is in my opinion that the conditional security view is the most logical and can be supported very well Biblically.

I think one of the most helpful passages that supports this position is found in Matthew 7:22-23. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’”

Here we have people who are operating in the gifts of the Spirit, which obviously implies that these individuals do in fact have the Spirit, which implies that they are in fact Christians. Despite this fact, we also see that they were not persisting in their faith, but rather that they were “practicing lawlessness” and living in sin. For this reason we see that these very verses correlate entirely to the conditional view. The New Bible Commentary states this point quite well when it says, “Acceptance depends not on profession, nor even on apparently Christian activity, but on whether Jesus knew them. Note the extraordinary authority he assumes as judge; to enter the kingdom of heaven depends on his acknowledgment and consists in being with him.”

The conditional view is also supported by the famous story in Matthew 25:31-46. In these verses, God separates the sheep from the goats by placing people in groups based off of how much they did to help others. Notice that He did not place people in groups based off if they were saved Christians or not, but instead He placed them into groups based off works. Those who did not do such works (the goats) were placed into eternal punishment while those who did (the sheep) were brought into eternal life.

Many simply take this verse to mean that the Christians are the sheep and the goats are everyone else, but they fail to see what is really said here. Now I would not say that this means that those who are not Christians will go to Heaven if they did good things for others, because when one combines these verses with other verses we see that belief in Jesus is necessary for salvation as well. One commentary points out “The basis for entrance was faith, evidenced by works of kindness (25:35–39). No unbelievers (“goats”) would be permitted to enter.”

Outside of these Biblical reasons, I would say that logic is a big part of this argument. I feel that those who take the eternal security view have a wonderful hope and a beautiful story, but an illogical and irrational idea of what Christianity is. It is a watered down view of Christianity and it is part of the reason it becomes so easy for many to say say “Lord, Lord,” while practicing lawlessness. It is not that the eternal security debate is wrong in all aspects, because our Lord is full of more grace and love than we can fathom, but when we live like a pagan, we die like a pagan. To what degree of paganism we can live under is up to God as He is the judge. But when we love a person, we should expect ourselves to show it and we should not even have to ask “how pagan can I be and still get by?” We do not fall into a marriage and simply leave it at that, but we work for the other person’s love. Yet so many times people will apply this to anything except Christianity while they try to figure out how sinful they can be without going to far.

One author made a clothing analogy to salvation and grace. “God provides us with the clothes of Christ’s righteousness. We are saved as we put on Christ. And we grow in Christ the same way we receive Christ, by putting on what is provided for us.” To make a play off of this analogy, I would like to point out that the problem with many Christians is that they wear clothes other than the ones Christ gave them. Satan also has his own clothing store that is quite accessible. The more his lawlessness clothes us, the more we look like a goat and after awhile we eventually look nothing like a Christian.

The biggest objection some would have for the conditional argument would be that it cheapens God’s grace and love for us. I believe, however, that God’s grace and love are the same for us regardless of the conditional view. He still loves us dearly and wants to offer us all the grace He can give, but the mistake is not found in God, but rather in ourselves. It is not God who practices lawlessness or does not reach out to others, but it is we who do so. I would imagine He would want to offer as much grace as possible, but when we live a life like those outside of grace, we become one removed from grace. It has nothing to do with cheapening the attributes of God, but with ourselves cheapening our own attributes. The mistake is in us.

ATHENS, Nov 19, 2009 (AFP) – Few believed that when Greece hired German coach Otto Rehhagel eight years ago to take them to the Euro 2004 competition that the team could return with the trophy.

And few had faith in the 71-year-old coach turning a 0-0 result at home Saturday with Ukraine in the World Cup 2010 qualification playoff match into a victory and sending the Greeks to only their second berth in a World Cup (they also qualified in 1994) on Wednesday in cold Donetsk.

Yet “King Otto” as he is called here returned in the early hours of Thursday with his team in triumph.

He quietly left the airport without making any comments but stopped to sign some autographs to the few fans who came to see the team return.

Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over favored Ukraine was Rehhagel’s 100th match as coach of the Greek squad and was celebrated with a surprise birthday cake from his players onboard the charter plane bringing them back to Athens.

“He is a man with few words. He is very happy for making it to the World Cup and was very touched by the surprise from the team,” said Greek Football Federation (EPO) president Sophocles Pilavios upon arriving with the players from Ukraine.

Rehhagel had been heavily criticized in the Greek press for keeping too many of his players from the successful Euro 2004 team and for inviting other players who were not getting playing time with their clubs.

And when the Greeks failed to qualify directly to the 2010 World Cup in what was considered an “easy” group” the critics were harsher.

“This team knows how to give answers when it receives criticism. On numerous occasions we have shown that in difficult times we have managed well,” said Greek striker Angelos Charisteas.

He said he has lived great moments on the team, including winning Euro 2004, but that “this moment is the most significant in my career.”

Charisteas continued: “As we played against Ukraine there was no way they would score a goal. I believe we showed the character that we know. We defended well without giving up a goal, we scored one goal and won the match.”

Midfielder Kostas Katsouranis said that the criticism was beneficial to the team.

“Let there be criticism, but its best to think before talking. We had reached the point where they would kill us if we did not qualify,” Katsouranis said.

He added that on the pitch Wednesday “we did exactly what we planned after the match in Athens, to score and to keep them from scoring. With some slight improvements, we are capable of something good in South Africa.”

Midfielder Giorgos Karagounis said many people underestimated the team.

“We had heavy criticism which did us some good. But at the end we showed character. It was a big win and we dedicate it to all the Greeks,” Karagounis said.

He added: “We never said we play super football, but we have accomplished a lot.”

Autumn in the middle Atlantic — in the month of November, especially — it’s one of the most sensuous times of the year to live in this area. The leaves have shed their monochromatic green sheen, revealing their true colors in a palette that always captures my attention when it begins to appear, everything from the pale gold of the ginkgo trees, to the bright red and rouge on the maples, to the copper, rust, and deep russet of the oaks and sycamores. I never tire of gazing at such grandstanders.

By now, too, the humidity has relaxed its grip on the atmosphere, allowing the revitalizing breezes to circulate freely again, while still maintaining moisture enough in the air to draw out the pungent aromas of damp, loamy soil, moldering leaves, and other earthy confections. And the days and nights are still pleasant and inviting — no longer too hot and not yet too cold — so we leave the windows open whenever and for as long as we can, to take it all in.

Autumn also is a time when nostalgia is in full bloom. Maybe it has to do with the realization that the days are growing shorter, the nights longer, and the end (literally and figuratively speaking) is slouching toward us, along the horizon. Or maybe it’s because, no matter how well you cover your eyes and ears, you can’t blot out the announcements about “the most wonderful time of the year” (oh, good grief!) that have begun arriving, like flocks of riotous, trumpeting migratory birds. For whatever reason, there’s something about the fall that makes me think of (and even pine for) other times, and other places.

What’s the right medicament, then, for my predicament of natural wonder and neurotic wistfulness? A soundtrack, of course; specifically, a mixtape comprised of new tunes that I’ve picked up and listened to over the past 30 days or more. These are songs that in one way or another make me think of days gone by, old haunts, or cherished friendships, whether recent or reaching deep into the past. They’re songs that are perfect for a moment of quiet contemplation — call it “leaf-peeping pop music” — or that should be turned up while riding around with the top down, while you’re still able.

“Roslyn,” Bon Iver & St. Vincent, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Ominous, dreamy, and foreboding — what better way to describe a song accompanying a movie about lovestruck teen vampires. And yet this wispy, waltzy little number, penned by two artists with pen names, is hardly dark or ghoulish. In fact, in the way Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Annie Clark (St. Vincent) meld their disparate talents into a singular, lilting, stripped-down ballad awash in lush, layered harmonies and muddy bass lines, this song could easily serve as music for a glittering, foggy fall morning.

“Blood,” The Middle East, The Recordings of The Middle East (EP). It’s hard to pinpoint an antecedent for this plucky little song by these Aussie newcomers. It begins in a folky, fey “Sounds of Silence” way — fluttery guitar picking, echoey, falsetto vocals, brushed snare. But then it gathers sound and momentum, adding more singers and instruments (an Autoharp, a xylophone, some percussion), building toward an Arcade Firey crescendo, only to pull its punches at the last second, dissolving back to near-silent sounds, the way Sufjan Stevens expertly does. Not sure what I mean? Hear it with your own eyes here.

“Too Young to Burn,” Sonny & The Sunsets, Tomorrow is Alright. What if The Rolling Stones hadn’t recorded Beggars Banquet and instead had collaborated on a record with The Supremes? It might have sounded a lot like this song, where a groovy, Motown-like backbeat supports bluesy, bare-bones guitar licks, peppered with lots of “Baby Love” handclaps, subtle girly doo-wops, and more. Beggars can’t be choosers, I know, but we can be dreamers.

“Raindrops (Matsuri),” Grand Hallway, Promenade. The opening moments of this song remind me of The Carpenters records my parents used to play, on rainy days, no doubt. It’s comforting to hear those familiar soft, male-female harmonies and jaunty piano chord-play again. But the tempo here soon quickens, and the instrumentation and melody structure take on a world-pop sophistication (think early Poi Dog Pondering) that Karen and Richard never would have attempted (or were allowed to achieve), a tribute to the collective power of this group, which includes members of several Seattle bands. Grand, indeed.

“Home,” Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Up From Below. Do you like homespun, folk-inspired, group-singing songs? If so, here’s a dew-ragful, at its liveliest, most affecting, and twee. Oozing bumpkin sentimentality, from the aw-shucks subject to the group’s “Hee-Haw” sensibility and sappy banter — you can almost hear the dopey Johnny-and-June dueters smiling at each other — it’s nonetheless infectious and comfy. In fact, each time I’ve played this playful ditty, churned out by a group of 10-plus musicians, it’s no less welcoming than the first. Y’all come back now!

“Feeling the Pull,” The Swell Season, Strict Joy. As a follow-up to their hugely successful soundtrack to (and starring roles in) the movie “Once,” Glen Hansard (The Frames) and Marketa Irglova are once again pouring out draughts of their swell, up-tempo, Irish-folk-inspired melodies. There’s no film to accompany the couple this time, but you don’t need visuals to see how his hard-strumming, rousing heartache is so effectively and affectionately soothed by her plaintive piano fingering and whispery harmonies. I’d bet that, given enough seasons, these two could make every break-up song sound like feel-good music.

“Heartbeat Radio,” Sondre Lerche. Heartbeat Radio. I’d guess this young Norwegian phenom listened to a lot of Barry Manilow and George Harrison records growing up. I have no way of proving my theory, but those ’70s stalwarts are the two main musical strains I hear flowing in and around this song — call it “Can’t Smile Without and Got My Mind Set on You.” Other influences peek out, too, from Elvis Costello to ELO, making this clever diatribe against the banality of FM radio even more heartfelt.

“When Did the Lights Go Out,” Pixie Carnation, Fresh Poems (EP). From the get-go, with its pounding drums and ringing guitar chords, this song gets in line with the great tradition of American roots-rock anthems that filled the airways in the 1980s. Except of course the band’s Scandinavian, which likely explains why, though a Tom Petty wannabe, it’s got better harmonies. There’s also just enough postpunk edginess (the kind perfected by the group name-checked in their moniker) to make it interesting and keep your head nodding along, in agreement.

“Last Dance,” The Raveonettes, In & Out of Control. Their name alone — Rave-on-ettes — should be a tip-off that this band (a duo, really) is a throwback to another era. But it’s their unique mix of ’60s girl-group charm and shoe-gazer values that makes them standouts to me. Take this incredibly catchy single as example: with its droning, spaced-out grooves and sunny chorus, it’s the happiest-sounding “choose-your-drug-habit-or-me” kiss-off songs I’ve ever heard.

“Cloudbusting,” Wild Nothing, Capture Tracks. I was a big fan of Kate Bush in college and have wondered lately where she’s gone, especially now, a time when her fantastically lyrical, dream-like songs would be in demand. This cut, the second single from her 1985 album Hounds of Love, and lovingly covered here in hazy, synth-pop layers by a young Virgina-based singer-songwriter, was one of my faves. Compare the new version with the original on this video, directed by Python trouper Terry Gilliam.

“Ashamed of the Story I Told,” The National, Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy. Does it matter whether you know who Mulcahy is or that this cover version of a song he recorded with his band Polaris can be found on a tribute album created as a fundraiser following a family tragedy? Does it affect your enjoyment of this haunting song, rendered here a little lovelier and less dirge-like than the original (hear that one here)? Not in the least. I’ve also heard and like Michael Stipe’s contribution, “Everything’s Coming Undone,” which reveals why Around the Sun may have sounded a bit like a solo project rather than REM’s 13th studio album.

“So Slowly,” Early Day Miners, The Treatment. Who are these guys? I don’t know or care, really. One thing I’m certain: despite (or maybe because of) the fact that their song offers an odd admixture of goofy ’70s glam and ’90s noisiness, I can’t stop playing it. It’s as if ABBA reunited to cover The Jesus and Mary Chain, or (more likely) the other way round, then added some Nuclear Daydream-era Joseph Arthur fuzzy-groovies and asked the ghost of Jimi Hendrix to light up the guitar-rowdy outro, and Shazam! Disco meets distortion. (That would require treatment for sure.)

“Good Ol’ Boredom,” Built to Spill, There Is No Enemy. It’s a rare band these days that puts the guitar out front. Too often that instrument, which until fairly recently had worked its way up from rhythm section to bandleader, now gets buried in the overall mix of melody and melodrama. Think about fogies like Mark Knopfler or Bonnie Raitt and you’ll get my meaning. But that’s never been an issue for these guys, who always deliver distinct, memorable guitar lines that — in the case of this wailer — make me think of high-wire acts like The Eagles at their soaring best.

“Mind Eraser, No Chaser,” Them Crooked Vultures, Mind Eraser, No Chaser. Remember when “rock and roll” meant loud music your parents told you to turn down, not soft songs you have to turn up to hear? For examples of the latter, look no farther than the opening tracks on this playlist (guilty). For the former, feast your eyes on these old buzzards — Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). Their rock-god reputations precede them, for sure, but it’s nice to know they can still make old-fashioned, balls-to-the-walls, heavy-metal music that will make your ears bleed. Straight up!

So, there you have it, 15 new songs for the season of the senses. I encourage you (nay, implore you) to share these with your friends and family members — as a sign of thanksgiving, perhaps. It’s what the Indians did, remember?

Madrid acogió el 14 y 15 de noviembre el “Campeonato de Natación por Edades” para ciegos y deficientes visuales en el que participaron cincuenta deportistas.

Organizado por la Federación Española de Deportes para Ciegos (FEDC) con el objetivo de que los nadadores puedan conseguir la marca mínima para participar en los campeonatos nacionales absolutos, el 14 y 15 de noviembre se ha disputado en Madrid el “Campeonato de Natación por Edades”.

En él participaron 50 deportistas ciegos y deficientes visuales, divididos en las categorías de Alevín, Infantil, Juvenil, Absoluto y Totales. Además, como es lógico, cada una de ellas, se subdivide en Femenino y Masculino, diferenciados también por “ciegos totales” y “deficientes visuales”.

Este deporte es uno de los que tradicionalmente más éxitos ha dado a nuestro país en tanto en los distintos Juegos Paralímpicos como en los Campeonatos nacionales e internacionales. I came across a verse today that I didn’t think of when I first wrote the blog arguing “Once Saved, Always Saved”. It comes from II Peter 2:20-22, and it reads..

“For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.”

As stated in the last blog on this subject, Jesus has provided us the way to be saved through grace and love. However, we still have instructions to follow. We are expected to live a faithful life.

Mi nombre es Mariano, soy director de cine de animacion, pero por esas cosas de la vida, por el momento ( o sea………casi años) cajero en una importante cadena de jugueterias. Trabajo en el Once rodeado de Judios, Turcos, Armeños. Bolitas , Perucas, Paraguas, Ricachones , Villeros, Punguistas, Oportunistas, Vendedores, y Mecheras (las minas que afanan en las grandes cadenas de negocios) estoy saturado de no poder hacer lo que quiero, en cualquier momento asesino al proximo que se cerque al mostrador y me pida un fucking descuento!!!!….Alguien me puede explicar porque carajo la gente que va al Once pide descuentos???. Para tener en cuenta…. La semana pasada una señora se acerca al mostrador y me dice:…ME VAS A HACER DESCUENTO, NO? PORQUE ME ATENDI SOLA. la mire le sonrei… y le dije: USTED VA AL SUPERMERCADO? LA ATIENDE ALGUIEN?………NO! NO LA ATIENDEN NI MIERDA!!! SE TIENE QUE ATENDER SOLITA…. CON EL CHANGUITO JUNTARSE SUS COSAS Y SI SE LE OCURRE INTENTAR PREGUNTAR ALGO A UN EMPLEADO, VAYA  A ENCONTRARLO!!!……CON TODO LO QUE ACABO DE ENUMERAR ALGUIEN LE HACE ALGUN DESCUENTO EN CARFUCKINGFOUR O EN EL SHITYWALMART? NO!!! NADIE! La señora me miro y no pidio mas descuento. para que no se vaya mal le regale un rompecabezas de goma eva para que juegue en el agua… Asi son mis dias con esta gente tengo que soportar hasta las ocho, horario en que rajo a mi casa a estar tranquilo con mi mujer y mi hija, que por suerte no me traen ningun problema…
