I’ve had a bit of a delay come up with finance issues. Not a show stopper, I just wanted to get things a bit more organized first to give myself a little more flexibility and get exactly what tools I want. I should be able to start ordering and bringing the vision into reality this Tuesday if all goes well.   Considering that music is essentially a ” hobby” with me, I don’t have any “delusions of grandeur” when it comes to making money. I just focus on the music and “give ‘er”. I use to get caught up in the process, but these days it’s all about the end results.

Some thoughts …

It took me a long time to learn the importance of things like “air”. A lot of the time what you don’t say can be as important (or more important) than what you do say. Implied naked can be more effective and powerful than full naked. And sometimes the beat is still  there even if you can’t hear it (or if the radio is off!)

Etre « moyen » est un concept : ni trop bon, ni trop mauvais, ni trop riche, ni trop pauvre, ni trop beau, ni trop moche. Les “moyens” sont cette catégorie de personnes transparentes : pas de gratulations, pas de bourses,  pas de copines mannequins… On se rappelle rarement du prénom du moyen car on ne le remarque pas.

1H30 de one man show retraçant des anecdotes sur le français moyen : le foot, le bistrot, le romantisme. Cette descrption peut laissé croire que ce spectacle est « beauf ». Non ! Godin met en avant notre côté insconscient ou inavoué beauf.

Entre humour et interaction avec le public, Stephane Godin est remarquable, dynamique et drôle.

Pendant cette heure et demie, Stephane prend à partie chaque femme de la salle. Sans embarras. Sans doute grâce au côté convivial de la salle : pas plus de 80 personnes.

C’est pas cher, (10 euros sur Billetreduc.com ), c’est original, et c’est tout sauf moyen.

Pour apprécier encore plus le moment, allez y avec votre amoureux(se) ! Vous vous regarderez et vous direz : « tu entends, il a raison » !

For years I have wanted to get Sound Diver running on my laptop and working with my PODs. Tonight I finally did it. There was a few challenges getting there but I got though them OK (many hours later).

I already made a new patch that sounds like Steve Hackett stop by for a cup tea. I used the “Insane” amp module and with little upper midrange focusing using  fixed Wah, Low pass filter. It’s a guitar sound that really sings. I can’t wait to let loose on the Bas POD and see what I can get out of that.

There are some pretty wicked and organic sounds that you can get out of the PODs, problem is you really need a computer to get in there and tweak around.

L’humour est léger, fin et subtil, l’attaque d’autant plus percutante.

Except for for some new knobs and a few other twittery little bits of silliness I’ve almost got everything on the guitar side ready to go. I’ve high string my 6 string acoustic and checked the setup status of all my guitars. I’ve got a new D/A digital audio interface that I can use to dump a few tunes off of my DAT to computer for re-mastering (that’s for retro CD project called “Before They Called It Ambient” as well as use in the new studio setup.

I’ve been learning how to use Sony Vega so I can do my own video editing and production (when the time comes).

I’ve got all my audio mastering software installed and working and ready to go.

I will be ordering the rest of the stuff I will need for my new studio next week.

I have no music written (on purpose) for the new CD project. I’m going into the creation of this CD with just a few concepts and high level ideas what I want it to be about.

I’ve arrange financing for the purchasing some extra software from Eastwest Sounds (super happy, mad scientist laughing in background sounds inserted here).

What I believe I will end up with (after the smoke settles down) is a total unified and uncompromised CD that is unique and timeless (… well at least I hope so anyway).

The idea is to write the music in the moment and not go in with a predetermined projection. Kind of letting the CD write itself based on the main concept resources, technologies and mindset at hand. Sort of an aesthetic “MacGyver“ guerrilla approach.

I’ve tried this before and kind of fell short of success due to a lack of equipment, time musical experience. But that was over thirty-five  years ago and things are very different now (much better all round).

Since I don’t have to pay $150 a hour for studio time I have a lot of creative freedom and zero pressure from anything (other than myself). I am free to do whatever the heck I want. Yes the door is wide open to finally kick some real cosmic ass and worry if it’s too complicated or no one will understand it (spoken in a sarcastic Homer Simpson voice) . Cuz this time I HONESTLY DON’T CARE.

I’ve decided I’m not going to do this CD project (whatever it’s going to be called) for money for any other reason other than my own creative enjoyment. I don’t really care what anyone thinks about the results. However I know the results are going to be good.

So …

I paid my $5 bucks and I got my new sneakers now get out of my way, it’s my turn to drive damn the spaceship!

The magician and his wand

Bless my holy angel! Was i really watching this!? I jus CAN NOT BELIEVE!! I felt like I was blessed 175 times today! Its an innings of a life time and something which u can very proudly say to ur kids n grand children that “I was alive when that happened and I watched it live!!”
And for this first time in my life i shud say n am guilty to accept that today something was more important for me than India winning. I was madly hoping that he wud cross 194 n reach whr any ODI player has never been, the magic 200. However it was dreadful that it could not be a fairy tale ending and had to end that way..
Most of us have read about One man show, single man army n all those stuff where an individual brilliance overshadows anything n everything that happened that day. This was that day and Sachin was the man. The Man of the match award for a man from the losing side stands as a little testimony.
Am damn excited and emotions are running high. Penning them all down is a pretty tough ask. I wud have written a blog for every shot he played today, that wud have been lot easier. It had his class written all over, again n again.

I guess am sounding a little lunatic. So, I wud better take a break here n go back to enjoying one of the finest moments in the history of Indian cricket.

The answer was pretty obvious when he was asked post-match as what keeps motivating him all these years. “I care about playing for India, it’s a passion and I have been absoloutely honoured to play for India so long” This is why we love u!

I cant imagine hw things wud b, once this guy retires!! I just cant digest that it might happen some day.. Sachin, Do u really need to retire!? U jus keep playing till eternity. Hope the God gives him a long life and in someway an ability to play till his very very end for the simplest of reason that the law of aging just doesn’t apply for this man.

When we ask “should I do” this or that, we’re enabling the habit of pretending to take action.

I have a friend who works at a local television station news program. I have a show to promote. Obviously, asking how to get on the show is something I should do.

Except, I had to think about it. Think through all the implications. I haven’t done a TV interview in a while. I don’t want my friend to think I’m taking advantage of our relationship. Blah blah blah…

I asked him. I’ll be on the 7 am morning newscast the Friday of opening weekend.

Opportunity is. It isn’t everywhere. It isn’t magic. No amount of positive thinking can bring more to us. It just is.

If I choose to seek out the opportunities that fill my environment, I’ll see them. If I choose to begin from the assumption that there aren’t many opportunities, and worse, that most of them are too risky, I’ll fail to pick up on the opportunities that surround me.

That’s the secret of positive thinking. If I seek I find. If I don’t seek, I can’t hope to find.

How about you? Trust yourself and your community. Act. Now. We’re waiting on you to bring something special to the table.

John, the main character of Born Again Yesterday, has a video blog. In this edition, he gets a little concerned about the End Times.

Michael Birch may be my new favorite person.

Anyone who knows me knows I have a special fondness for Hamlet (it’s not my favorite – that coveted position belongs to Richard III, at least this year, but I do adore it all the same). Anyone who knows me knows I also want to be in Hamlet very badly – though I really only want to play one character (Horatio)…not all of them.

However, playing all of them is exactly what Michael Birch is doing. In this 90-minute version of Shakespeare’s revered tragedy, Birch tackles all the main characters and even has a swordfight with himself. That’s insanely cool.

I loath one man shows, with a passion. It’s like seeing someone you do not wish to see walking along the street and you quickly duck across to the other side of the road just to avoid them. I go to great lengths to avoid having much contact with a show or performance that lacks two people. The reason behind this is that a single person, a ‘one-man show’ just has the huge ability to fall onto its head. There is a defined make or break moment in each one man performance I’ve ever seen. That moment of, “Can this person actually keep me entertained for the whole running time… yes? No.”

With this in mind, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Raul at the Barbican Centre by the notorious James Thiérrée. For those that don’t know who this man is, (and don’t worry, I equally did not know until recently), he happens to be grandson of Charlie Chaplin, and the son of Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée. If anything, there was a lot to live up to in this performance, and I have to say, it was certainly one to catch my imagination.

A one-man show in the Barbican Theatre, that great expanse of a stage, it seemed all too surreal, or quite possibly the start of something I might regret watching. However, upon taking my seat, it became clear that this wasn’t just your average show.

James Thierree in Roaul

Huge white sheets, suspended from the flies, hung, drapped over piping, an odd assortment of shapes and sizes poking out in all directions from the stage that dominated every inch of the immense stage that is the Barbican Theatre. James Thiérrée suddenly appears running through the audience, climbing across seats before making his way up to the expanse of white sheets before him. With momentous music, and a sweeping of his arms, the sheets suddenly retract in a beautiful manner revealing a lead pipe structure. It is at this moment that I let out my first of many “wow”’s.

Raoul is an odd performance piece, part comedy, part mime, a mixture of trickery of the eye and spectacular visual effects. Raoul is a symphony for the eyes. An oxymoron if you please. It is both spectacular in form as it is precise in concentrated details. Leading the eye to both be marveled in sheer size of visionary images and squint equally at small magical movements.

Admittedly the piece takes a while to get into, not because it is hard to watch, or tiresome. It is more understanding the way that Thiérrée moves around the space, the silent dialogue and clowning elements, it is essentially understanding the language he is using. With Raoul you have to drop all sense of intelligence, and allow yourself to be immersed inside a world of true imagination.

Thiérrée performs with strength and comic ability, but equally there is a thorough form of training and skill that he has with his body. Watching him send ripples around his body is quite fascinating, if a little odd to conceive.

Thiérrée creates a strange, mysterious world to which the spectator has to loose all senses and thought and enjoy a spectacle of epic proportions.

Breath taking stage design

There are moments within Raoul where I was left wondering “How are they doing that?”, especially with the stage design, which is at times breathtaking.

The house made from large piping during the course of the 75 minute performance slowly gets dismantled in explosive creative ways. Towards the start of the piece the front of this structure just falls apart, the large piping narrowly missing those seating in the front row (many a gasp of horror during this moment).

There is another breath taking moment where the back wall of piping seems to explode outwards as it magically gets lifted upwards away from the stage looking like a star that has descended to earth.

The music equally plays a huge part within this performance, it shapes emotions and atmospheres, it booms across the Barbican Theatre, and tinkles in all corners. It is clear that Thiérrée’s piece isn’t just about himself, it is a much larger version of a world he is creating. The sounds that echo through the theatre combined with the stage trickery and imagination makes your head pound with chaotic excitement.

The show even features a large elephant, a strange fish that swims across the stage and a large puppet bird. The various materials and devices used is endless, and brilliantly done.

James Thiérrée

A one-man show by James Thiérrée is not exactly what I expected, that is for sure. Thiérrée is talented, and rightly so, given his upbringing around circuses and learning the tricks of the trade from his family. He is a spectacle himself, who manages to so easily switch between the clowning elements to the sheer physical ability of his body. He appears to have no limits. Throwing himself across the stage, onto piping, and even at one point flies across the stage and out into the audience.

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed myself in this performance, it did take me a while to get actively engaged in this. It’s bizarre. Certainly is not for everyone. Yet equally it is challenging and works wonders for the eyes. But Thiérrée still has a way to go before I will gladly give him a standing ovation such as the one that occurred on the night I saw Raoul, but that is a pet hate of mine.

Raoul is spectacular, but how far does it go to keep us engaged?

Lundi soir, 19 octobre, se pressait le tout Canal+ à une représentation privée tres particulière : une pièce de Guillaume Gallienne, sociétaire à la Comédie Française et… chroniqueur au Grand Journal de Canal + avec “Les Bonus de Guillaume” :

Un de ses chefs-d’œuvre :

Gallienne est-il aussi bon sur scène qu’à la télé (et au cinéma remember l’adorable aristo fin de race qu’il jouait dans Jet Set, en 1999…) ?

La réponse est sans conteste “oui”. Outre vos journalistes préférés de GQ, il fallait voir Denisot, Ardisson, Beigbeder, Toussaint, etc.. toute la crème des animateurs applaudir à tout rompre leur collègue et néanmoins ami à la fin du spectacle.

“Les Garçons et Guillaume, à table !” dont les représentation commencent aujourd’hui (21 octobre) à Boulogne c’est l’histoire d’un mec qui pense que tout le monde – et surtout sa mère – veut qu’il se comporte comme une fille et se construit donc sur ce diktat supposé – tu seras pédé, mon fils. Sur ce pitch, Gallienne invente un concept révolutionnaire : le coming out hétéro. Quoi ? Comment ? En racontant pendant une heure et demie, et de façon méchamment hilarante, comment il a finalement trouvé sa voie/voix dans l’hétérosexualité, Gallienne creuse une nouvelle manière d’appréhender la confusion des genres, et par extension la masculinité. Qu’est-ce qu’être un homme aujourd’hui quand la virilité old school n’est plus tolérée socialement, sexuellement, et quand trente ans d’activisme gay ont fini par alléger le « douloureux problème » ? Illustration implacable de l’efficacité de la thérapie par le rire, finement écrit et brillamment interprété (merci la Comédie Française), servi par un dispositif scénique simple mais funky, (en particulier quand le jeune Guillaume se prend de passion pour la belle-mère de Sissi impératrice…), le one man show de Gallienne est ce qu’il convenu d’appeler une heureuse surprise.

Although the are a few musicians at my day gig, their mindsets are totally unlike my own. I don’t mean to say I’m any better than they are. But I don’t consider myself to be a “regular” musician either  (I’m more of a Aesthetic Conceptual Facilitator). Although I’ve never heard any of them play their guitars, I would imagine some of them are most likely better guitar players than I.

I have no interest in “jamming” or even playing other people’s music. There is some deep motivation driving me to write and record original music. It’s a motivation that I haven’t seen in anyone else since I worked with my first band “Paralandra“   back in the mid-Seventies in my home town in Nova Scotia. Now that was a bunch of motivated people.  We all had the same vision and worked together as a unified group. We all went into dept up to our armpits in order to bring the project to into existence. Many times after band  a practice session we would pack up our stuff and come out and find 6 or more musicians standing around who were listening to us play earlier. What can I say, we were pretty good. Paralandra is still the aesthetic model that I work from today. In fact one of my earlier tunes  I wrote I named “I Paralandra” for just that reason. I am carrying on that musical tradition (for whatever its worth, it seems to work for me).

Lately the thing I’ve been thinking about most is much fun it’s going be when I get my new music studio. Being a one-man-band is one thing but being a one-man-orchestra-and-choir is really going to kick some cosmic memitudes. Don’t worry “memitudes” is not a real word, it’s Paralandrian for a unit of measurement of higher positive emotional and inspirational content, (i.e. Boy that guitar solo really had a high coefficient of cosmic memitudes!)

I still haven’t nailed down the concept that I will be working from for the next CD. I’m sort of waiting to see what I will be able to do with what I will have to work with. A lot of my past projects have been partially manifested by the sound qualities and ranges of what I had to work with. Ergo I can play bass like a maniac when I’m using a Rickenbacker 4001 as apposed to a ersatz Fender Precision or Ibanez something or other. For some people it works the other way around, they love Fenders and hate Rickenbackers. Ultimately it’s whatever it takes to get the job done. I can remember the first big Prog. Rock concert I ever went to, I expected that all the players would have perfect form and technical skills on each of  their individual musical instruments. That wasn’t the case but with the cosmic sounding stuff that came out of those speakers, who cares! I know I didn’t.

Well it’s been a little crazy the last 6 0r 7 months but things are  getting better and I am stating to see the light of day.

Getting on in years makes it a little more challenging to invest the energy into 2 and a half careers at once but I’m sort of pulling it off. However, the one thing I’ve been ignoring is my work on the web. I’m slowly changing that for the better. Exhibit A this entry.

I’m almost ready to assemble my new studio in the very near future. I have almost have decided what I’m doing for gear  and I have just a little more research left to do to finish it off.  Plus I have to wait a little bit in order to position myself financially but I’m so close I can almost smell those processors on the Mac Pro burning away!

I would of had the studio in place now it wasn’t for the new guitar and a few other surprises that came up. In any case we’re getting close and I’m already to rock.

Just figured I’d make this because I’m watching a bunch of Nevershoutnever! vids on Youtube. I think I have an addiction…

Hier ein Gameplay Video eines MMO’s welches komplett von einer Person entwickelt wurde. Man kann Städte verteidigen und auf Abenteuerreise gehen…was immer das heißen mag. Aber ich finde die Einzelleistung extrem beachtlich. Es gibt sogar einen Tag-, Nachtwechsel. Die Alpha kann man schon runterladen. Server sind auf 200 Leute begrenzt.

This morning I am sitting in a law office covering phones for a friend of mine.  His office seriously needs a makeover—the computers are ten years old, in fact he’s still using WordPerfect!  The chair I am sitting in could collapse at any moment.  The desk should be sitting in a heap of trash down by the curb.  The phones work.  And I suppose that’s all I need to worry about.  I think I just hung up on someone… oops!

About a year ago I began writing a book.  You might call it my memoirs or an autobiography.  I have a long way to go but bit by bit, story by story, chapter by chapter, I will finish it. I am writing it because I must write it.  I don’t know if that makes any sense to you.  It’s a need I have—like some people need to have kids—some need to have a big house or an expensive car—I need to write this book.

This past weekend I performed a one-man-show, “Meth for Dummies”.  I am very pleased with how it went.  On Sunday I sat down with Harry Waters, the director, and we discussed future iterations of the show.  To my surprise he remembered me mentioning the book I am writing and we talked about an exciting possibility–making a portion of my book into a show.  More to come… more exciting details to come….

As for writing, it’s one of the few things I know I can always do–anywhere, anytime.  All it requires is a pen and a piece of paper or a keyboard, an open mind and something to say.

One of these days I will need an editor.  But for now, I’ll keep writing so she has something to do when the time comes.

D’origine asiatique, Bun-Hay en a écumé des critiques. Résultat ? Sans équivoque, il se moque de ces gens qui l’ont montré du doigt trop longtemps.

Toi, lui, moi… nous autres qui ne voyons pas plus loin que notre bras. Mais Bun-Hay ne s’arrête pas là. Rebeu, renoi… tous sont visés. Ben faut pas oublier, ils font aussi partie de la société. C’est vrai que Bun surfe un peu sur les clichés. Voleurs, menteurs, c’est un peu ça le statut d’un immigré (humour toujours).

Mais attention, faut pas déconner ! C’est pour de rire, je te vois venir. Ici bas on ne mange pas de ce pain là. Racistes et autres activistes passez votre chemin, vous ne rirez point (c’est certain). Mais moi j’ai ri sans chichi. Et j’attends patiemment son prochain stand up “on the rock”.
