Dear One Mic,
Part of the story behind ‘One Mic’ by Nas is one of the original techniques of hip hop. The idea that armed with nothing but that one mic, the lyrics in his head and the talent God had blessed him with a masterpiece could be created. A legacy left behind far outweighing anything that would come to precede it, and as he bleeds his explanation into the mic it’s easy to feel, hear and sense the passion behind a craft dying to a new breed of technology but refusing to be eliminated in the hearts of a talented few. Although Nas’ original song was designed to be a passionate portrayal of the standard process of the music industry, Chris Robinson pitched an idea to Nas for his video that would change not only the immediate images that arise when thinking of the song but also compare it to a serious underlying issue in Africa, the 1976 uprising in Soweto.

Nas explained the meaning of the song ” ‘One Mic’ is how I’ve been feeling,” he said. ” ‘One Mic’ has been on my mind for a long time. I knew that people weren’t being for real and truthful from the heart with the music that was coming out. ‘One Mic’ represents my every emotion, everything that’s in my mind.”

This being said I’ve been thinking lately about the figurative meaning of ‘One Mic’ and how it translates into life as “One Mike’. That’s all I need, that one person to stand beside me, that I can believe in as fervently as they believe in me. When I meet him he may not necessarily have everything in place for what he’s going to be in his future. However that doesn’t alter my acceptance of my One Mike in his purest form, in the original designed he was intended by his Maker to be. Even as I begin to watch One Mike transform into a warped version of what I once knew to be true I can not help but hold onto the truth I believe in and continue to see him for what he once was. For when I look at One Mike I see not only what is standing before me in the present but I am able to feel what will lead our way into the future. Change, deception, disappointment and discouragement doesn’t stop me from continuing to stand by him and pour my soul into him even as One Mike takes a form directly in front of my eyes that I never imagined possible. His purity becoming rancid as he defeats my expectations, brings me to my knees with the pain of humiliation and forces the One Mike I once knew to become nothing but a memory dying out, even as I struggle to stroke the embers through my constant tales of what once was.

Oggi vorrei riproporre una battle secondo me “storica” nel senso che 3 big così non si erano mai visti assieme e scontrarsi tra loro. Si ho detto 3 perchè il quarto meglio che non lo nominiamo, figura magra ed errori incredibili…

In particolare vorrei mettere in mostra il grande Clementino che purtroppo da un pò di tempo non si fa più vedere. Ricordate il suo primo album Napolimanicomio? Grande vero? Speriamo che ne esca un prossimo o almeno nuovi pezzi magari con qualche buon feat.

Prima di vedere i video qualche cenno biografico di ognuno:

Clementino: Maccaro Clementino, in arte semplicemente Clementino, nato nel 1982 incomincia a fare rap nel 1996 seppur molto giovane entra a far parte del clan “TREMA CREW” di Napoli e succesivamente con i “TCK” di Napoli, dopo anni di esercizio e con la maggiore esperienza acquisita partecipa a numerose sfide di freestyle nazionali dove si afferma come il più “titolato” MC degli ultimi due anni.

Rayden: La sua carriera incomincia nel 1999, con varie collaborazioni in diversi progetti, ma la svolta arriva nel 2005 quando, con Ensi e Raige, fonda i One Mic. È proprio con questo gruppo che esce il primo disco di Rayden, Sotto la cintura, prodotto da La Suite Records. Nel 2007 è anche uscito C.A.L.M.A., il suo primo disco solista, che vanta collaborazioni con i One Mic e artisti della scena underground italiana; nel disco fa la prima apparizione sulla scena musicale Little Flow, fratello di Ensi e Raige, che partecipa all’album nel brano La Uannamaica a soli 12 anni.

Ira: Ira fa parte degli AudioRitratti è un duo rivoluzionario formato da due mc’s Ira e Aedo, entrambi cresciuti nel solido underground catanese dei primi anni 90 (quando il rap non era musica di strada ma musica in strada), hanno modo di confrontarsi e crescere con numerose esperienze (il triumvhirato, elekctromc’s) che li portano a staccarsi e a maturare uno stile unico. Nel 2004 esce il primo demo “AudioRitratti” dove le liriche dei due mc’s isolani, trasudanti di protesta, vengono supportate dalle strumentali di un promettente beatmaker locale conosciuto come EnzoJehnzoo. L’incontro da alla luce un buon prodotto che porta il gruppo in tour in tutta la sicilia acquisendo molti consensi positivi in buona parte del territorio nazionale e in alcune riviste del settore. Successivamente, dopo una serie di esperienze all’interno delle più importanti competizioni italiane di freestyle (Tecniche Perfette, 2TheBeat), il gruppo decide di dar vita ad una vera e propria crew conosciuta col nome di Catania Faya, con l’intento di riunire sotto questo nome tutti i migliori esponenti locali delle altre discipline dell’hip hop (Nero Inferno,Noema,Diskarex,Panzone,61 Crew,Crazy4Breaking,Enzo..); Il 2006 vede alla luce il primo prodotto della crew: il mixtape “Rock On CiTy vol.1″, mixato da dj Secco Jones (Combomastas), che comprende inediti dell’intera crew e di alcuni maggiori esponenti della scena italiana (Mistaman, OneMic, Jesto, Hyst, MadBuddy).

Qui Gel fa un magrissima figura, prima bestemmia poi quella rima sul povero bimbo ucciso…ma Ira lo risponde a tono con una rima a dir poco incredibile e perfetta: sei cosi cretino ke ora sul palco fai la figura piu triste di quei ******** che hanno ammazzato quel bambino,originale,catania faya,ci puo stare,quando va totalemente rime valide,secondo turno,clementino,ira,rayden!

Qui Ira e Rayden ceracno di prendersela con Clementino per buttarlo fuori, ma la classe non è acqua e passano Ira e Clementino…

Final round:

Clementino vince il round e quindi la sfida, obbiettivamente forse Ira meritava di più ma è stata una lotta fra titani del rap.

I’ve been thinking a lot about two things recently: the place of the novel and the place of criticsm. This well-written article approaches both by looking at uber-critic James Woods’ new book How Fiction Works. With a title like that, you can guess a lot about its tone and the sort of reverence it has for the novel, but the article does a good job at gleaning some interesting stuff.

Spacing Montreal ask why you always see shoes on power lines. Their answer is charmingly ambiguous and the same as mine: they have no idea.

And finally, NY Mag have a great write-up on Nas’ upcoming album. I’m not super-familiar with Nas but I do know that years on, “One Mic” still sends shivers up my spine.

Ask most people about their top 5 emcees and you’re pretty likely to hear Nasty’s name with a lot of those cats putting him at the top of the list.  From Live at the BBQ to Ilmatic to the Escobar period to besting Hova in battle of the elite to making us think critically about what Hip Hop means to us and whether it’s alive or dead Nas has challenged us with his music from the beginning to the present.  So as we’re on the verge of another highly controversial album from god’s son we at HNL Hip Hop bring to you a short Nas retrospective for this week’s Throwback Sunday.
