I was never really a fan of the band One Republic, I feel like they try too hard to be a cross between The Fray and Coldplay with a little bit of R&B thrown in on the side.  They have some cool beats on their self titled first album, but it never fully peeked my interest.

A month or so ago I came across the band Stars of Track and Field.  While I think that they are somewhat of a ripoff of One Republic, they are little more easy on my ears.  The piano, guitar and electronic beats come together nicely to make up some great music.  The song “End of all time” is by far my favorite on the album, it was even featured in an episode of Grays Anatomy recently.  Check them out and let me know what you think!

07.12.08 – Does music redeem? Have you seen the French film Les Choristes (The Chorus)? The website of the British newspaper The Guardian defined it “a postwar boarding school drama”. “Set in an authoritarian reform school in 1949, – the Guardian adds – the film focuses on the attempts of a dissident master to subvert the draconian regime by teaching the boys to sing, and shows the redemptive power of music on the boys”. I wondered what “draconian” means and then I looked up the word in my English dictionary and found these meanings – “of or relating to Draco or his code of laws” and “harsh”. Instead, Draco is described as “7th century B.C., Athenian statesman, whose code of laws (621) prescribed death for most offences”.
Film for families? Moreover, there are other opinions in that article. “It is a family feelgood movie – the journalist Amelia Gentleman writes – with a saccharine gloss which has chimed with a new French nostalgia for the postwar era. Due for release in Britain in January, it is being promoted as an export to rival the international success of Amélie in 2002″.
Well, that is what this quality newspaper writes, but first of all I would ask you whether it is really a family feelgood movie. Maybe it is partially, at least according to me, but I do not think it is that way a lot. After all and as an add to this opinion of mine, I do not think it has a saccharine gloss and the reference to Amélie is really very fascinating with hindsight because both movies are two very nice French films (but why ever is there no reference to Chocolat?).
Fashionable singing? Eventually I read about a particular in the article I did not know – that is “Les Choristes is a remake of the 1945 French hit La Cage aux Rossignols (The Cage of Nightingales)” – and, moreover, we can read an opinion of the director Christophe Barratier about the plot too. “This isn’t – he says – a particularly fashionable subject”. I do not know what are your opinions about it, but personally I think that he may be right. Maybe he really is or more probably he is not… Who knows but you…

Joy in the Week of November 16

(Still can’t get back to the weekly post… will keep trying though!)

1. December magazines – I subscribe to lots of magazines, and I love getting the fat, juicy December issues. They are packed with inspiration for presents, entertaining, and food. Some of the best so far La Cucina Italiana, Canadian Living, Canadian House & Home, and LouLou.

2. Battle Studies by John Mayer – The latest from Mayer returns to some of his older form – less blues, more melodic songwriting. A good CD for relaxing or having on at work.

3. Waking Up by One Republic – For the most part, this is a good CD with dreamy Coldplay-esque songs. I think they’ve realized that the public likes this type of song from them versus the hard driving stuff.

4. The Venus Fixers  by Illaria Dagnini Brey – After reading its review in The Toronto Star, I picked up this novel about Allied officers who were responsible for sensitizing the troops to the cultural monuments in Italy. These men were responsible for identifying these monuments for bombing avoidance, training advancing ground troops to respect the monuments and artifacts, and rallying communities to repair any damage. Fascinating read! A good companion documentary is “The Rape of Europa”, which was aired again on TVO this week (trailer is on YouTube) – the missing artwork, the monuments devastation caused by the war across Europe is brought vividly to life in this documentary.

5. Try Sleeping with A Broken Heart by Alicia Keys – After her dreadful first single release, this new one is much much better. There was a less than enthusiastic performance of it on “Dancing With The Stars” this past week (I was flipping channels only and chanced upon it – really!), but the actual download is good.

6. Starbucks’ Christmas Blend – Hurray, it’s back! For the last 3 years, I’ve been hooked on this coffee blend. I stock up on the Decaf variety, which takes me to about March.

7. Top Chef Las Vegas on the Food Network – This Vegas version is the 5th or 6th in the Top Chef series – think of it as the American Idol of food. I look forward to seeing how these chefs will approach the various tests, and the judges’ comments. I get  an education when I watch and now think of “balanced flavours” whenever I taste my own food or eat out. 

8. Joseph Gordon-Levitt recreating “Make ‘Em Laugh” on SNL – The infamous Donald O’Connor number from “Singing in the Rain” was redone by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the opening monologe of “Saturday Night Live” on the 22nd. Why he thought to do this? Maybe his party trick is flipping off walls? A really strong effort and very funny! Kudos to you! You can see if for a limited time likely here.  The whole show was pretty funny and there are extra sketches showing at the link – check out the “Say Anything” spoof.

9. H1N1 Clinic Staff – I headed to my local regional centre for the H1N1 innoculation, and I was very impressed with the organization. It reminded me of the usual efficient organization of an election. But every person I encountered, from the police directing car traffic to the staff inside directing human traffic to the nurse who stuck me was smiling, helpful and personable. Well done!

I simply love Leona Lewis’ voice and her past hit singles Bleeding Love, Better in Time and Footprints in the Sand had me captivated on those long bus trips to and from school. For those of you who like her songs and haven’t heard from her latest album which was released only earlier this week, here’s a snippet of all 14 songs! Her albums are really getting better and better – more reflective of her soulful voice and definitely, she puts a lot of passion into her songs. I have quite a couple of favourites!

13. Lost Then Found feat. OneRepublic and 14. Stone Hearts & Hand Grenades

So, last night, in the midst of all the pain and no medication to take (or lack thereof, I didn’t want it to cloud my abilities), I finished a track for my new album. This track is in the same vein as One Republic’s “Apologize”. Instrumental only, ladies and gentlemen. Every artist loves the work they do, every song they make.  But there are some songs which just have that feel, that vibe, where you just know that this is something hot. That’s the way I feel about this song I just made.

I have great respect for artists such as One Republic, and guys like Ronald Jenkees, who, I should mention, is exactly the same as me. We do the same stuff. We work with computers. We are self taught musicians.

Last post, I surmised about loving to do an instrumental collaboration with Ryan Tedder of One Republic, Ronald Jenkees, or even Timbaland for that matter, who I must say has had a great effect on One Republic’s musical style, and music in general. I want to take instrumentals to a new level, and I think working with these great artists will afford me the ability to do that.

I’m going to try and reach out to them and see what they have to say.

Hey y’ulz. Hey do y’all remember Windows? Yes, Windows. That program on the “computers” that we all used to use (v diff 2 the OS we use on our lappies today). One of Windows’s greatest features was being able to open one thing while opening another at the same time.

Passend zum neuen Til Schweiger Film “Zwei Ohrkücken” haben die Jungs von One Republic wieder eine Single auf den Markt geworfen. Damals zum Vorgänger “Kein Ohrhase” hatten sie ja mit “Apologize” einen riesen Erfolg und hoffen wohl jetzt mit ihrer neuen Single “Secrets” gepushed durch den Film daran anschließen zu können. Wer sich jetzt schon mal für die U-Bahn abhärten will, kann sich den Song hier anhören, denn spätestens im Öffentlichen Nahverkehr wird der Song aus den Handys von unzähligen Kids einem früher oder später auf die Nerven gehen.

Übrigens gibt´s die ersten 5 Minuten von  Zweiohrkücken mit den alten Bekannten Nora Tschirner und Matthias Schweighöfer und natürlich Til Schweiger  hier zu sehen!

When was the last time you went to a rock concert? We hadn’t been in “too long to mention” and the experience certainly has changed.

We set out last might to see One Republic, Rob Thomas and Carolina Liar, at the beautiful landmark Beacon Theatre in New York City.

The show opened with a fairly new group called Carolina Liar. We had never heard of them before, but we did recognize “Show Me What I’m Looking For”, their current single.

The room was about 1/3 full at that point, but those of us that were there enjoyed their energetic performance.

We were struck by a group of  “50 somethings” swaying and dancing in front of the stage.  “Aww, how cute”, we remarked, ” They must be the band’s mothers!” It turned out they were not such an anomaly after all.

Soon after, One Republic came on, and truly rocked the house. The venue started to fill up, and by the time Rob Thomas stepped on the stage, the place was packed. What was shocking was the profile of those that were there.

Across the aisle, was a cute spectacle clad grey haired couple, on a big night out without the grandkids.

Gaggles of 40-ish woman wearing “mom jeans” and sipping Cosmos were on their feet, flabby arms in the air, swaying to the music. A well behaved but responsive crowd, singing along to the LITE FM hits.

As the show neared the end, a full 4 hours after it began, people were scampering for the door. Rushing home to relieve the babysitter, or just past their bedtimes?

We all enjoyed the show, (thanks, Walter!) and can’t wait to see another one. Apparently, we fit right in, although my jeans are way cooler, and my arms are much more toned!

I loved about half of OneRepublic’s first album (“Apologize” was played to death but “Mercy”, “Stop and Stare”, and “Say (All I Need)” are still killer), so I was interested to hear what they’d pull out on their soph disc. It’s better than the first. They ditched a lot of the U2-esque delayed guitars and focused mostly on the hip-hop beats and melodic pop chorus’  with almost-rapped verses (and yes – some orchestral strings are still there). You can’t help but nod your head to most of the CD.
