The story of the lord of the rings starts from the book – The Hobbit and is continued in the books – The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers and The Return Of The King.

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

TheOneRing.net hace notar un reportaje de inthenews.co.uk en el cual el productor Peter Jackson habla sobre el guón de las precuelas “Ha sido una experiencia interesante ya que han pasado ocho o nueve años desde que escribimos los guiones para El Señor De Los Anillos y me preocupaba que fuera extraño, difícil o incómodo regresar a escribir. Pero tan pronto como empezamos, en realidad fue facil y divertido”.

CLASH OF THE GODS: TOLKIEN’S MONSTERS airs Monday, October 5 10PM/9c on HISTORY.

If you’re a history and military buff like me, The Lord of the Rings is a story tailor made for you: two massive armies facing each other on the battlefield about to be locked in combat. Now…just substitute Patton for a wizard in flowing white robes, the Nazis for a hideous race of creatures called Orcs, and Europe for Middle-earth.

Okay, that’s a wee bit simplistic (and not actually accurate…although written in spurts between 1937 and 1952, Tolkien always said that Lord of the Rings should never be read as an allegory for World War II.)

But what is it that has caused The Lord of the Rings to have sold over 150 million copies and to be translated into almost 40 languages? For me, it’s that feeling of real history, which gives Lord of the Rings its life. JRR Tolkien was obsessive about documenting his universe with dates, family trees, maps and indexes….hell, he even threw in a creation story. If it wasn’t for the fact that the characters are elves, dwarves, hobbits and wizards you’d think you were submersed in a history textbook.

So in Clash of the Gods, the goal was to figure out where all this inspiration came from. Much of The Lord of the Rings is about good overcoming evil, and Tolkien’s devout Catholicism provides the backbone. Comparisons of Frodo’s quest to Christ are plainly seen, but I think the most interesting tidbits are the ones found in Beowulf and other Norse myths. Tolkien doesn’t really hide in lifting almost exactly scenes from classic tales. The transformation of Smeagol into the creature Gollum almost exactly mirrors a tale in the Norse Volsunga Saga; and scenes like Bilbo stealing a cup in The Hobbit are directly lifted from Beowulf.

But more than any gods or monsters from ancient myth, I think it’s the personal pain that Tolkien suffered which gives The Lord of the Rings its foothold in reality. As a soldier in World War I, Tolkien was right in the middle of the action, watching friends killed and mutilated right in front of his eyes. When Tolkien writes about the same kind of suffering for Frodo there is a ring of truth that isn’t found in any other kind of fantasy writing.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter to me that Tolkien stole stuff from tales of the past…that’s pretty what all writers do. But what he did was to make it his own and transform it into something new. A feat which many writers attempt, but few do successfully.

So I’m off to re-read The Lord of the Rings…150 million people can’t be wrong.

What Is It?

Based on the Tommy Tenney , Mark Andrew Olsen novel Hadassah, “One Night With The King”, it is an expansion of the Biblical story of  Esther. The plot is the one you know, with the addition of a political plan to stop Greece and gain vengeance for the Kings murdered father.

How Was It?

It starts off shaky, gets good then drags on it’s way to a satisfying ending. This is an accomplishment considering the screen writer (Stephan Blinn) and the director (Michael O. Sajbel) are separately responsible for some of the absolute worst Christian films ever. The feel of the movie seems a bit like someone jumped a camel from “the Ten Commandments” grabbed “Belle” away from “…the Beast” and dropped her in Middle Earth, where she was to reenact Bible stories, accompanied by a king who shares a make up artist with Captian Jack Sparrow.

LOTR fans will recognize John Rhys-Davies or Gimli, narrating as Mordecai . Furthermore, you will also spot obvious knods to Gandalf’s helpful moth, the flame lit fortress in Mordor, the forging of the Orc’s swords, Saruman’s speeches to the armies, Aragon’s dramatic entrance through the giant doors of Helms Deep, the black riders and even theOne Ring, itself, revealing it’s message by fire.

Though there is lots that we have all seen before, they are emulating some of the best film has to offer and do it with decent actors, solid photography and a very large budget. Little touches like having Haman’s symbol look surprisingly like a swastika, and the evil advisors fearing the Greeks because the will bring democracy (more the American version than the Greek) border between cute and silly but don’t detract from the story. There are a couple holes left unresolved like a “Three’s Company” style misunderstanding and Esther’s questions about Queen Vashti that are never answered. Despite these down falls, it is a very watchable movie.

Is It Good For Kids?

There are some parts that are a bit scary and dark and Queen Vashti shows some cleavage at one point. Other than that, there is some bloodless action to keep the boys interested and some “princess movie” elements for the girls.

What About Spiritual Issues?

For the most part all the Bible story is here. It’s just “more flushed out.” They incorporate elements from other parts of the Bible as well as retelling of some of the actual stories themselves. There is even the utterance of a Messianic Prophecy.

The only change I found distracting was the kings selection process for a new queen. First the other girls were all so dreadfully silly, that there was no real competition. Second he avoided having his “one night” with any other girl and then asked Esther to be his queen before their evening really started. I found this nod to the American romantic sensibilities more out of place and silly than the democracy comments.

Despite there additions and rewrites, there is nothing that changes the ultimate message of the book and it certainly lines up with the message of the Bible.

What Is Your Recommendation?

It’s a movie you may enjoy. It’s well worth watching, especially if you have friends who are interested in the film.

I always find it fun (especially with kids) to read the Bible story first, talk about what happened, and then watch the movie and compare them.

“One Night with the King” offers plenty to entertain as well as inspire thought.

Still, for my money, I much prefer the 1999 TV movie Esther (now on DVD) that, though not quite as grand, captures the beauty of the story much better while keeping a stricter focus on the original text and giving us a smoother story

Its with great excitement that I announce the release of the much anticipated Fan Film, the Hunt for Gollum.  Put together in England by a group of Tolkien fans on a $4000 Budget, The Hunt for Gollum takes the view on and imaginary journey through Middle Earth in this Short Prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring. 

Great Costumes and special effects adorn the film as we depart on a journey from the village of Bree in North-Western Middle Earth all the way East to the Far Eastern Lands of the Anduin Valley.  The film surprisingly surpassed my expectations, particularly in regards to how the direct was able to capture the imagination of Peter Jackson’s Trilogy; in fact, it gave me hope for upcoming director Guillierimo Del Toro’s adaption of The Hobbit set for release in 2012.  The ability to adapt a story, while keeping in touch with a former story’s beauty is a difficult task that every director of a sequel/prequel must encounter, and hopefully conquer.  I only hope that Jackson’s works will not become objects for imitation, but rather, lessons to be learn and expanded upon.  As I mentioned above, The Hunt for Gollum surpassed my expectations, being able to use alternate actors in place of Aragorn, Gandalf, and even Smeagol, without taking away from the story.  Of course we all will cherish the acting from the Rings Trilogy, but excellent film making can accommodate for a change in actors.

Another pointer worth mentioning is the original score, composed specifically for this film.  We often hear interlopes of familiar themes based off of Howard Shore’s Masterpiece collection, such as the Mordor Theme, and often enough, faint variations of Emiliana Torrini’s Gollum’s Song.

Runtime for the film is about 40 minutes, so I suggest you take the time to sit back and enjoy the film.  It is definitely worth your time!  The video is embedded below!

Walaupun trilogi The Lord of the Rings sudah berakhir sejak tahun 2003 dulu, masih banyak pihak merasa bahwa franchise ini bisa meraup untung (apabila dengan diumumkan bahwa prekuelnya: The Hobbits akan dibuat). Enam tahun kemudian, sebuah video game baru dengan sub-titel: Conquest dirilis oleh publisher EA. Yang membuat Conquest berbeda dengan game-game lainnya, adalah game ini memperbolehkan gamer bermain dari dua pihak; pihak kebaikan di bawah pimpinan Gandalf dan pihak kejahatan di bawah sang kegelapan Sauron itu sendiri. Memainkan pihak kebaikan akan mengikuti cerita Lord of the Rings baik novel maupun film yang sudah kita kenal (dengan beberapa tambahan skenario khusus untuk gamenya), tetapi memainkan pihak kejahatan di bawah Sauron akan memiliki jalan cerita yang sangat berbeda karena gamer bermain dengan tujuan menghancurkan – bukannya menyelamatkan – Middle Earth.

Dalam setiap mode campaign, Conquest memperbolehkan memilih empat job yang ada: Scout, Warrior, Archer, dan Mage. Keempat job ini memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda-beda. Scout misalnya jago dalam mengendap dan memiliki kecepatan lebih tinggi dibandingkan karakter lainnya. Pemakaian Warrior dan Archer juga berbeda karena Archer lebih berperan sebagai backup yang memanahi musuh dari kejauhan sementara Warrior langsung maju berhadapan dengan mereka secara frontal. Bagi mereka yang belum terbiasa, saya sarankan memakai job Warrior yang memiliki pertahanan dan stamina lebih kuat dibandingkan karakter lain. Game ini juga menawarkan opsi untuk bermain sebagai ‘hero’ di saat-saat tertentu. Siapakah Hero? Mereka adalah karakter-karakter yang sudah kalian kenal melalui trilogi LoTR. Dalam pihak kebaikan misalnya, mengijinkan anda memainkan Aragorn, Eowyn, Gimli, Legolas, Gandalf, dan banyak lagi. Sebaliknya pihak kegelapan memiliki Balrog, Nazgul, Saruman, sampai sang Sauron itu sendiri.

Campaign Solo dalam game ini tergolong cepat selesai. Masing-masing skenario kira-kira hanya memerlukan waktu lima hingga enam jam untuk selesaikan. Artinya, untuk menyelesaikan kedua skenario utama game tidak akan memakan waktu lebih dari 15 jam. Conquest tergolong mudah dimainkan Solo mengingat setiap kali kamu mati, tidak ada penalti dari gamenya. Kamu bahkan diijinkan untuk respawn (hidup kembali) dalam sekejab. Ini berarti melawan bos yang kuat sekalipun terasa mudah. Apabila kamu salah memilih job untuk melawannya, kamu bisa menjajal melawan bos yang sama dengan menggunakan job lain. Satu-satunya perkecualian adalah ketika kamu mati menggunakan Hero – karena Hero tidak bisa hidup kembali dalam campaign yang sama. Satu-satunya kekalahan yang mungkin kamu derita adalah bila kamu gagal menyelesaikan misi yang diberikan game kepadamu (biasanya mempertahankan atau merebut sebuah wilayah dari musuh).

Conquest memang bukan game yang didesign untuk kamu mainkan seorang diri. Game ini memiliki fitur online dan co-op yang bisa menampung sampai 16 orang bermain bersamaan. Kamu bakalan saling melindungi, mengepung musuh yang lebih kuat raksasa, bahu-membahu memenangkan, atau malahan saling beradu dalam campaign-campaign yang ada. Kala bermain bersama itulah baru benar-benar terasa serunya Conquest.

Final Verdict:

Gameplay: 8.0
Tiap job memiliki kemampuan yang berbeda. Mencoba menguasai tiap job yang diberikan merupakan tantangan tersendiri – tetapi itu baru awalnya. Beradu dan bekerja sama dalam campaign dan variasi multiplayer game.

Graphic / Sound: 8.5
Sebagai game LoTR yang hadir untuk konsol current-gen, grafis Conquest sangat tajam dan berhasil merender 3D dunia Middle Earth. Suaranya juga diperhatikan oleh EA yang mengontrak Hugo Weaving sebagai narator kisah.

Play Time: 9.0
Conquest tidak akan bosan-bosan kamu mainkan, dengan satu syarat: multiplayer. Setelah 15 jam pertama kamu selesaikan dengan memainkan Campaign Solo (dan menguasai karakter-karakter yang disediakan), memainkan ulang game ini di dunia online maupun co-op bersama teman-temanmu akan membuatmu enjoy memainkan Conquest selama puluhan jam ke depan.

Overall: 8.5

‘The One Ring of Power ofwel de Ene Ring is de belangrijkste van de Ringen van Macht die Tolkien beschrijft in “In de ban van de ring” en hij wordt de Ene Ring (of One Ring) genoemd omdat hij de andere Ringen kan regeren. Op de One Ring staat met Tengwarletters een tekst gegraveerd in de Zwarte Taal, de taal van Mordor:
“Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul”

The Lord of the Rings. It alludes to an integral part of the plot. The poem reads:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.[1]
Figuring out who you want to be. I really like this part of the movie. I get all happy when I hear this poem, cause it’s a pretty hopeful one. I think you don’t always start off becoming who you are meant to be, sometimes it is a journey, sometimes you really are that diamond in the ruff. Sometimes you don’t know what role a character will play, like the Gollum character towards the end.

I think the movie is neat cause you have this King masquerading around as a ranger, eluding his true destiny. While eluding his true destiny he also eludes true love. The two being tied into one. Cause of course Arwen’s father will not allow her to marry him, unless he takes up his role as king.

I like the dream scene where she gives him the evening star, and says it’s hers to give. I think in that scene would have been cool if he had given her a ring. Ofcourse even in the dream world she would probably still have needed approval from her elven father, or maybe not, cause in spirit your hearts can do and say things that you are prevented from doing in the real world.

Watching the characters transform over the course of the three movies is amazing. I think it’s one of my favorite trilogies. Not only because all of the characters are so truly worthy, but because friendships, romance, honor, loyalty, destiny, still mean something in the movie. You don’t get that a lot in the real world, and I think that so sad, because it’s truly needed, especially in our time period.

I like the scene where he finally takes up the sword and decides to fulfill what he is meant to do. Ofcouse if Arwen had gone on the ship, would the sword ever have been reforged, and would he ever have left off the ranger role, and taken up his role as king? I like to think that another way would have presented itself, but sometimes one thing set’s into play another thing.

Anyways if you have never seen this trilogy, it’s worthwhile. It’s small people overcoming amazing odds, it’s loyalty and friendship like you can only dream of. It’s romance and watching a destiny be fulfilled. It’s spiritual and mystical. It’s so many things rolled into one.

Today at 1pm eastern time, the NHL had its first ever outdoor hockey game in the US. With over 73,000 fans packed into the home of the Buffalo Bills, everyone was asking the same question: Does anybody care?

You see, here at Rangersin08, we find it hard to label any hockey game a ‘winter classic’ without having the most classy team in hockey, the New York Rangers, a part of it. So when it was all said and done, after the snow had fallen and Sidney Crosby scored the shootout winner, the fans quickly exited the stadium, and television sets were quickly turned off. Rumor has it that the nation was gripped with excitement, hoping to see an appearance of the Czech Cyborg, or the Swedish Rock Star, but were let down once again by two lackluster franchises.

Steven Johnson, long time NYR fan, took the 6+ hour trip to buffalo for the game. When asked about the outcome, he simply said “Predictable, as is any game without the Rangers. There were no winners in today’s game, only losers.”

Emily Adder, a 9 year old Pittsburgh fan, drove up from Pennsylvania with her family and her best friend, Rebbecca. The two youngsters were excited about seeing their favorite player, Sidney Crosby, take to the ice in the winter weather. When asked about how it was to watch a hockey game in the cold, Emily said “Well, my family is from Pittsburgh, so naturally, its usually this cold every winter in our house when we listen to the game on the radio, I just hope Sidney can take it, he’s so delicate…” When our corespondent asked Emily about if she thought Henrik Lundqvist should have been involved in tonights game, she added “Even tho he plays for the rangers, me and Becca always take turns fantasizing about what it would be like to be saved by Lundqvist…” Alas, there was no saves in Buffalo by Henry on this day.

The nation will look forward to tomorrow night, as the NYR will take its 3 game ‘we’re the lord of the rings’ winning streak to western Canada, where they will defeat the Calgary ‘we should be called the calgary ice’ Flames starting at 9pm eastern time.

Il trailer de La bussola d’oro, film tratto dall’omonimo primo libro della trilogia Queste Oscure Materie di Philip Pullman, parte mettendo in evidenza il legame tra l’opera di Pullman e quella di Tolkien. Legame che, a parer mio, è limitato all’essere entrambe trilogie e al fatto che i film da esse tratti sono stati tutti prodotti dalla medesima casa produttrice, la New Line Cinema. Qualunque altro paragone è assolutamente fuori luogo.
Tuttavia è interessante il modo in cui il marketing della New Line ha scelto di evidenziare questo presunto legame: si vede l’Unico Anello di Sauron cadere e trasformarsi nella Bussola d’Oro. Certo, sono entrambi oggetti dorati, di forma circolare e veri simboli delle due trilogie, quindi l’associazione risulta intuitiva. E’ stato però forse dimenticato che l’Unico Anello racchiude il potere di Sauron ed è stato creato per estendere il suo dominio sugli altri anelli e su tutta la Terra di Mezzo. L’Anello, che non deve certo essere utilizzato (vedi Gollum) e che i veri saggi rifiutano (Aragorn, Elrond, Galadriel e Gandalf), finisce nelle mani del piccolo Frodo Baggins, la cui missione diventa quella di distruggerlo, ponendo così fine al dominio di Sauron e scacciando il Male dalla Terra di Mezzo.
Opposto è il destino della Bussola d’Oro nelle mani di Lyra. Anch’essa offre potere e conoscenza al suo custode, ma al contrario viene utilizzata attivamente per combattere. Si sceglie quindi la strada indicata da Boromir e suo padre Denethor, che può portare sì alla vittoria, ma una vittoria in cui tutti sono più tristi di prima.
Quella che probabilmente rimane un’innocente scelta di marketing, rende però esplicita la profonda differenza tra l’opera del cattolico Tolkien e quella dell’anti-cristiano Pullman, che, partendo dall’assai poco velato attacco alla Chiesa, rappresentata come l’antagonista Magisterium, raggiunge il suo culmine nell’uccisione di Dio, nella forma ridicola dell’Autorità, da parte dei protagonisti e la fondazione di un nuovo ordine, la Repubblica dei Cieli, che sostituisca l’ormai vetusto Regno dei Cieli.

Cos’è OpenID 2.0: un metodo di identificazione online decentralizzato che richiede di dimostrare il possesso di uno specifico URL per essere identificato. Tale possesso deve essere confermato sia dal sito che accetta l’autenticazione sia dall’host OpenID.
L’URL in questione può provenire da tutti quei provider che supportano la specifica di OpenID. Tra questi MyOpenID, Sxipper, PIP di VeriSign, ma anche WordPress. E io ho provato a utilizzare l’URL di questo blog per provare ad autenticarmi in ma.gnolia.

Come funziona:
1. inserisci l’OpenID URL nell’apposita casella di testo

2. verrai reindirizzato direttamente al provider che fornisce l’URL (nel mio caso WordPress) e qui ti verrà chiesto se vuoi che la tua identità, accertata da OpenID, venga comunicata al sito a cui vuoi accedere. Il provider mostra anche le informazioni sul profilo utente richieste dalla form di registrazione, che possono essere già inviate per una precompilazione

Molto semplice, in apparenza.

Il primo impatto di fronte a una notizia del genere è stato: finalmente! Non serve più ricordarsi username e password per tutti i siti a cui si accede quotidianamente, basta compilare le form di registrazione, ecc.
I principali benefici dall’introduzione di un sistema come OpenID sono: la gestione dell’identità (diventa facile gestire tutti i propri account attraverso un’unica coppia username-password), la sicurezza (con un’unica password si possono finalmente applicare le best practice di gestione delle parole chiave: lunghezza, durata, ecc.), la decentralizzazione (i dati degli utenti non sono memorizzati in un unico luogo o gestiti da un unico ente o una società).

Tutto questo è molto bello, ma ci sono anche dei “contro”…leggete qui. Ho anche copiato il titolo del post perché è davvero spettacolare!

Potrebbe davvero OpenID diventare l’”Unico Anello”? Con quali conseguenze?
