Tracklist: Happy – I Got You – Can’t Breathe – Brave – Outta My Head – My Hands – Love Letter – Broken – Naked – Stop Crying Your Heart Out – Don’t Let Me Down – Alive – Lost Then Found” (with OneRepublic) Bonus Track: Fly Here Now – You Don’t Care – Let It Rain

I’m totally obsessed with this song~ I’ve been listening to this song on repeat lately, because it is just awesome. I know, I know.. I just posted a OneRepublic song like a couple of weeks ago, but this is what this segment is about… songs that I’m totally obsessed with this week! However, I have been straying away from that theme for the past 6 or 7 weeks, hehe. Anyways, I love this song. And I love the music video! But unfortuntately I can’t embed it here, because I’m afraid it will be disabled later, so I’ll just have to settle with just the song.
Ahhh~ Ryan’s voice is just love <33

OneRepublic's 'Waking Up' released Nov. 17.

I wasn’t sure about OneRepublic when I heard the song ‘Apologize.’ Everyone was talking about it/singing it and the video reminded me of something The Fray would do. But I’ll admit– Eventually, I couldn’t stop singing it either.

It was just the other day that I heard ‘All The Right Places’ on the radio–and I knew who it was from the first couple of beats. This time though, I wasn’t hesitant about it, this was a great song. So, I picked up their new CD ‘Waking Up,’ and after a couple of listens I’m here to report that I am officially a fan.

I laughed at the first track, with acapella voices previewing the first few tracks–it seemed like a strange, but different opening track. This CD then led into the song ‘All The Right Places,’ which is something that reminds me of the song Apologize, but with less of an R&B feel. From there you’re listening to the second single of this album–the song ‘Secrets,’ which I love, and frankly, is one of my favorite songs of the year. From there, ‘Everybody Loves Me’ takes on a different sound (awesome chorus, too) and is a song about having pride for what you’ve been given. ’Missing Persons 1 & 2′ takes on a another completely different sound and has a certain sound of playfullness that the other songs seem to be lacking.

The song ‘Good Life’ is a typical upbeat song about dealing with what you’ve been given–and to stop complaining about it. Back with an R&B rock sound, it’s catchy, and awesome at that. It reminds me of something that would be in a movie preview or a romantic comedy about the time two people realize they’re made for each other. The song ‘All The Time,’ follows, and for the first time on ‘Waking Up,’ OneRepublic slows things down. Not only that, but it’s definitely a song that everyone can relate to–it’s about being in a completely different place in your life than someone you love/care about–but running back to them because it’s the only thing that’s familiar. The songs ‘Fear’ and ‘Waking Up’ follow this and seem to open the same way, but also take on a slower beat that seems to get brought back up within the first minute mark.

‘Waking Up’ closes with the songs ‘Marchin’ On’ and ‘Lullably,’ and honestly, I’m disappointed by how it ended. I feel like the opening songs to an album and the closing songs should be ones to remember, and I don’t want to remember them. The song ‘Lullably’ really is something that I’d fall asleep to, or keep on as background music. Once ‘Waking Up’ slowed down, it didn’t start back up and instead remained steady with filler songs and slow background music.

I think this CD has a good overall message and is something that’s been playing in a my car since the day I bought it. (Always a good sign.) I wish it had more songs like ‘Secrets’ and ‘All The Right Moves.’ Alas, it’s one of the better CD’s I’ve bought this year. (Which also says something..)

Highlights: Secrets, All This Time, Everybody Loves Me, Good Life

5/5

Having firmly routed a UK flag pole in the charts of almost every major country around the world with her record breaking single Bleeding Love, Leona Lewis finally embarks on the voyage which will almost certainly set the tone for the rest of her career. Fluke successes come and go and small discoveries are often soon forgotten. This chart conqueror, though, seems determined to make more of a lasting claim on the continents she won over two years ago with her debut album Spirit. New release Echo sees the continuation of a number of working collaborations with some welcome additions and a definite growth and maturity in musical sound.

The sought after Ryan Tedder is back to provide two album highlights; both lead single Happy and the OneRepublic duet Lost Then Found. Both tracks demonstrate a depth of emotion that was perhaps a little lacking in Lewis’ debut and although the pop sparkle of Bleeding Love is traded for a more gritty, philosophical tone, the transaction is a fruitful one. Max Martin, the father of modern pop music, also returns with Outta My Head which could well just blow a few minds. Although Lewis has dabbled with a little bit of pop before, the phrase up-beat has been a bit of a no go zone. Well no longer! Outta My Head sees Lewis easily competing with the ‘GaGa-Bootylicious’ of today and must surely be a future single. Though Ne-Yo’s presence is sorely diminished, Justin Timberlake more than fills the gap with Don’t Let Me Down, focussing on a more authentically urban sound.

Leona Lewis cynics, who continuously criticise her preference for ballads, will be blasted out of the water by Broken and My Hands. These two songs mark, perhaps, only the second time that Lewis’ extraordinary vocal abilities have been matched by an equally incredible lyrical content. The voice soars, the lyrics dig deep and the production values draw the two extremities together beautifully. Whilst some will continue to call her dull and predictable, those who really listen will hear an artistry that is genuinely unmatched by any other female singer in the genre right now.

Do we really want Leona Lewis to start singing club friendly tracks when it is the ballads that set her apart from everyone else? Isn’t that the reason that we voted for Alexandra Burke last year?

I need another story
Something to get off my chest
My life gets kinda boring
Need something that I can confess
‘Til all my sleeves are stained red

From all the truth that I’ve said
Come by it honestly I swear
Thought you saw wink, no
I’ve been on the brink, so

Tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

My God, amazing how we got this far
It’s like we’re chasing all those stars
Who’s driving shiny big black cars
And everyday I see the news
All the problems that we could solve

And when a situation rises
Just write it into an album
Singing straight, too cold
I don’t really like my flow, no, so

Tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

Oh, got no reason, got not shame
Got no family I can blame
Just don’t let me disappear
I’ma tell you everything

So tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

So tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away

This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away
All my secrets away, all my secrets away

I am still here. Things around here seem to have spiraled out of control, and I am trying to get a hold of things again. The list of things I am juggling at one time just continually seems to grow. About the time I think I have them all going, everything fine, all the sudden here comes something else. I wrote my sister an email earlier today (during a brief break at work) and I don’t think I can come up with a better comparison, so here is what I told her::

I won’t even begin to list the things I am drowning in right now. Lets just say my grand idea to take 19 hours and work 20 a week is catching up with me… okay… let’s be honest, it has run me over like a mack truck.

I must say, it is still appropriate. However, I am not going to excuse all of you wonderful people from the massive list of things to be done- here it goes…

Draft on King Arthur (3-4 pages)

Capstone Paper (15-20 pages)

African Politics Paper (15-20 pages)

British History Paper (15-20 pages)

African Culture Movie & paper

Capstone Movie & paper

Middle East Movie & paper

Presentation of Seneca Falls Convention

Biography Reading (532 pages)

Lamotte Reading (272 pages)

Language Lab work

Language exam

And the goal is to have all of it done by Thanksgiving… I know, I am dreaming. Because I work as well- 20 hours a week. It will never get done, but it is nice to try. Right?

I have lost my mind haven’t I?

Please take this plethora of information and understand that I won’t be around much over the next week… it will be similar to the past few weeks… and I will spare you the list of things that got accomplished during that time.

A small nugget of information for all of you music lovers out there- go buy the new ‘OneRepublic’ CD. You need it. Trust Me.

Hoping your life is simpler than mine,

All day I’ve been listening to the three new albums I got yesterday: Kris Allen’s self-titled debut record, OneRepublic’s Waking Up, and John Mayer’s Battle Studies. I don’t ever write album reviews (didn’t even write one for BB D, haha) but I am just loving having so much great new music to listen to, all in the same day that I just have to talk about them all, lol.

EEEE, I am pleasantly surprised at how this album turned out. It’s quite different from his pre-idol music: edgier, harder. Not that his pre-idol album was bad, I just wasn’t too crazy about it. But this one, I am kind of really loving it. It kind of reminds me of The Fray, The Script, and a bit of John Mayer, and some early OneRepublic (meaning the Dreaming Out Loud days, not their new album) in some songs. Which is good, because those are some of my favorite artists. But that doesn’t mean the record sounds like a copy, it still sounds very much like Kris. Um, Heartless took a bit of time before I warmed up to it, because I really loved the Idol version and even now I still prefer that over the album version. But it’s grown on me after that initial WUT moment, haha.

Favorite tracks: I Need to Know is a GORGEOUS piano track, I love it so much. Next favorite is The Truth.

This is really different from their first album. FAR edgier, louder, bolder. Honestly when I first heard the lead single off this album, it took some getting used to, but now I really love their new sound. Love the loud drums, and the string ensemble! And there are some really… ~out there effects and things that make me go WUT, but in a good way. I was like, “HEY ONEREPUBLIC, THESE THINGS YOU DID ON YOUR RECORD ARE KIND OF RIDIC, BUT I LOVE IT.” Some of the songs are still reminiscent of their old sound though, except kind of different too, hmm.

Favorite tracks: LOVELOVELOVE All This Time. I am loving Lullaby, Fear and Good Life too. And Waking Up. And I still really love All the Right Moves. Eff, I love the whole thing. Really.

Love the theme he’s got going on. Battle Studies talaga eh, what with songs entitled Heartbreak Warfare, War of My Life and Assassin. A lot of people have been saying this is his best album yet. (LOL after some poking around, apparently a lot of people think it sucks too. Rofl. Whatever, I still like it.) I can’t form a definitive opinion on this because I didn’t use to listen to him extensively until a few months ago, but it is a really good album. Such beautiful songs, OH MY HEART. I think this one is my favorite out of the three albums I’m listening to (but apparently only barely, because I almost doubted this decision when I was listing my favorite OneRepublic tracks and realized that I loved so many).

Favorite tracks: coincidentally, two of the battle-related titles I mentioned are my favorites: Heartbreak Warfare and Assassin. And All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye. I also like Friends, Lovers or Nothing even though I don’t necessarily agree with what it’s saying, hahaha. And um, I kind of love ALL OF IT, really.

In conclusion, YAY NEW MUSIC BRB LISTENING OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Am on my second run through (on all of them), haha.

However, I have a soft spot for OneRepublic. I love their music, it’s catchy while still being neutral enough to play loudly in my room without getting the stink-eye for the other inhabitants of my household. Their new album Wake Up is definitely worth not only checking out but buying, specifically Good Life.

So apparently Tuesdays make for good album-releasing days. Not sure why, but nonetheless, heaps of new music hit my Zune marketplace today and it’s pretty exciting.

Firstly, John Mayer [finally] put out Battle Studies, which was sort of a long-time coming since his last studio-recorded album (Continuum). My roommate, Marc, and I were both pretty disappointed when we gave it a listen this afternoon. It’s definitely got a softer tone to it, and compared to his past work, is almost a little mushy. Both being big-time Mayer fans, we were hoping for that bluesy/soul feel that he’d been perfecting (especially on his live album, Where The Light Is). I did, however, enjoy his cover of Crossroads on the new CD, along with the closing track, Friends, Lovers, or Nothing. The single Who Says is also pretty solid, but that’s old news. Overall, a bit of a disappointment, but I bet he’ll still kick ass on his winter tour, which Marc and I might try to catch in March over spring break.

OneRepublic, Norah Jones, and Kris Allen also released new albums today. Wale, Say Anything, and Carrie Underwood also released new albums in the past few weeks, so it’s been a challenge to get through it all. I’ve yet to entirely finish any of these, but I really like the superfluous feel of the OneRepublic album from track to track — very solid music. Kris Allen is pretty poppy, but still pretty enjoyable. Norah Jones seems more edited than normal, I dunno if this tops her earlier stuff. Say Anything seems pretty angry/whiny, which they can do very well — the talking bits might be overdone, but it’s also very catchy. I’ve yet to try the Wale or Carrie, but I have high hopes.

Looking back at all these artists, it makes me realize how wide my taste in music is — its hard to be picky with so much good content out there! Let me know what you think about all the new discs.

Ryan Tedder Sets Sights On Nashville, Hollywood

From Billboard, written by Gary Graff

He’s a hit-writing machine for his own band (OneRepublic) and for a slew of other pop artists, including Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love,” “Happy”), Beyonce (“Halo”) and Jordin Sparks (“Battlefield”). He’s also moving into the country realm with an upcoming Rascal Flatts collaboration.

Now Ryan Tedder tells Billboard.com that he’s set his sights on conquering another territory –

films.

“I love movies. I’ve always loved movies,” Tedder, who’s currently on the road with OneRepublic, opening for Rob Thomas to promote the band’s sophomore album, “Waking Up,” which comes out Nov. 17. “I used to want to be an actor, but that’s never gonna happen, so I might shift into writing moves at some point. I’ve had a couple screenplay ideas I’ve been toiling over for the last two or three years. I’ve already pitched one of them to a buddy of mine who’s a producer, and he thinks I could get it made.”

The Timbaland protege says moving into movie making represents “another challenge” that fits his “goal-oriented” personality. He also acknowledges that such an endeavor may lead him to “slow down the songwriting,” something he says may be in the offing anyway.

“I might reach a point with music when I’m kind of like, ‘OK, I’ve done what I set out to do and I don’t know if I’m gonna beat where I’m at,’ “ explains Tedder, who’s written recently for Adam Lambert and Natasha Bedingfield and plans to work with Katy Perry in 2010. “It was just pure luck that the first two hits I wrote broke every freakin’ record. I’ve always been the kind of person who…half the fun is getting there and I just move on to something else rather than being like, ‘OK, I want to play king of the hill and see how long I can stay up here.’ I don’t want to turn into friggin’ Madonna or whatever, where you’re constantly fighting to maintain some kind of pole position. It’s that eternal pressure to maintain it that drives people mad and starts killing people.”

Tedder, who trained in songwriting in Nashville, says that writing for country artists is “refreshing” but still thinks he’s “gonna start slowing down…in the next couple of years.” But he’s still wholly engaged in OneRepublic, whose new album he feels has “a lot more energy to it, a little more fun and a little more attitude” than 2007’s gold-certified “Dreaming Out Loud.”

“We didn’t want to chase ‘Apologize’ or chase ‘Stop and Stare,’ ” Tedder explains. “We wanted to do something fresh and different, forge ahead and create a new sound that was specific to OneRepublic. Our songs are bigger than we are up to this point, and we became keenly aware of that while touring. So this album aims to remedy that and really create an identity for who this band is.”

In addition to touring with Thomas and into 2010, OneRepublic will celebrate the release of “Waking Up” with a Nov. 17 appearance on NBC’s “Biggest Loser.”

Been reading Chicken Soup for the Soul Newsletter, I read the story behind the one of the greatest hits, OneRepublic’s “Apologize.” If you love that bittersweet song, like me, check this out:

Apologize

Ryan Tedder

I won a record deal in a singer-songwriter competition on MTV when I was 20 and went from being a college student to a professional in two months. It turned into a bunch of nothing but hype. I was broke, frustrated and generally disgusted with the music industry, so I went back home to Oklahoma.

For the next three years, I started searching for the type of music that was the best fit for me. I tried everything from hip hop to pop, rock, R&B, everything, and I kept going back to British rock. I started working a little — I did a record with Timbaland and a few others.

I wanted to start a band and I had a name — Republic. So I moved to Colorado Springs, where I had gone to high school and a lot of my old band mates still lived, and formed One Republic. I stayed with my dad. He had just gotten a grand piano and I sat down to work at it. “Apologize” just kind of popped up. I was 23 at the time. I was writing about relationships, like almost every songwriter does. It’s instinctive. I had no luck in relationships from the time I was in middle school through college. Every relationship blew up in my face. I had no girlfriend for more than four or five months. I had become the definitive lonely heart.

My family couldn’t figure me out. I could always get girls, I just couldn’t keep them. I attracted the flavor of the month (or week) but I wore my heart on my sleeve, a set-up for disaster. I became totally disenchanted with women and wrote “Apologize” as the ultimate kiss-off song. It was the last song I was going to dedicate to relationships and it summarizes all of the relationships I had.

I was always the nice guy and treated girls really well. They’d break up with me and go off with some badass. Then I’d get a call six months later and the girl would tell me she realized how well I treated her and that she was sorry and wanted to get back together. I got tired of hearing “I’m sorry” and realized I value myself more than that.

When I finished the song, I was so convinced that it was a hit that I said I would get a new job if I was wrong. One Republic was signed to Columbia at the time but they dropped us despite hearing this song. Of course, it was the same week they dropped the Jonas Brothers and Katy Perry.

All the labels passed on us, but I still believed in the song. It sat on the shelf for five years until Interscope Records heard it and got it. Ironically, Interscope was the first label I did a showcase for when I moved to Los Angeles and I told friends that it was the label I wanted to be at. The rest is definitely history. It was very vindicating. The song was not only #1 in countries all over the world, it made history by getting the most airplay ever for a song in one week and it sold over 10 million singles.

I’ve cornered the market on breakup songs, so I’m trying to write more positive songs now. They come more naturally now that I’m happily married.

“All we’ve ever wanted is to look good naked / so someone could take it” Bringt mich zum schmunzeln und macht den Song irgendwie sympatisch.

Platz 3 OneRepublic – Secrets Meiner Meinung nach völlig belangloser Standard-Pop. Ich muss sowas nicht haben. (Aber die Streicher sind super)

Platz 4 David Guetta ft.

Sehr treffend.

I loved about half of OneRepublic’s first album (“Apologize” was played to death but “Mercy”, “Stop and Stare”, and “Say (All I Need)” are still killer), so I was interested to hear what they’d pull out on their soph disc. It’s better than the first. They ditched a lot of the U2-esque delayed guitars and focused mostly on the hip-hop beats and melodic pop chorus’ with almost-rapped verses (and yes – some orchestral strings are still there). You can’t help but nod your head to most of the CD.

Standout Tracks:
2 (“All the Right Moves”)
3 (“Secrets”)
9 (“Waking Up”)
10 (“Marchin’ On”)
11 (“Lullaby”).

Skip:
5 (“Missing Persons 1 & 2″)

Kid Ears Alerts:
6 (“Good Life”) > b-word & s-word.

Bottom Line:
Buy the whole album! Amazon Download Link
